Regional Forums

They help build the CEMS spirit of community and give us the chance to visit another CEMS schools, meet the locals and learn about a specific topic, while obtaining skill seminar credits!

Let’s take a look into three of the most recent regional forums.

The Nordic Forum is the largest annual CEMS event in the Nordic countries. Its purpose is to

facilitate cooperation among the Nordic CEMS schools. This year it was hosted by Aalto

University School of Business in Helsinki where 75 students from schools across Europe took

part in the event. The program included workshops, interviews and naturally networking with

both students and companies. CEMSies got the chance to participate in workshops with

Corporate Partners like Maersk, Google, L’Oreal and social partners like Fairtrade. The social

activities gave students a taste of Finnish student life and the long summer nights with a Sitsi

party and a final gala right on the sea.

Nordic Forum - Helsinki

Business went social in the 2014 edition of Marenostrum, the regional CEMS event of ESADE, Universitá Bocconi and Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE). The conference brought together students from 16 nationalities and 11 CEMS schools to explore the “Social Dimensions in the Business World: Social Skills, Social Media and Social Responsibility”.

Executive Team

Dear reader, A very warm welcome to the first issue of the CEMS Student Board Newsletter of 2014, which provides you with an insight into the current work of the Student Board (SB). The Spring Student Board Meeting marked an inaugural event, where the Student Board invited the CEMS Club Presidents to join for a simultaneous meeting.

The meeting provided a platform for the groups to both discuss common issues that clubs

faced locally and share best practices with each other. We were glad to also set up workshops

on the topics Improved Corporate Partners’ Virtual Engagement and Social Media Marketing.

This particular newsletter issue is therefore aimed at giving you a brief update of the recent

achievements and the upcoming projects of the five different teams in the Student Board (SB)

that were initiated in the meeting in April 2014, which was kindly hosted by the University

College Dublin.

The Alumni Relations team managed to finalize the project on the Student-Alumni-Mentor-

Programme (SAMP) Best Practices, which can now be applied by the CEMS Club Presidents in

all schools of the CEMS alliance. Furthermore, the team is closely working with the CEMS

Alumni Association (CAA) for the “Alumnus of the Year ’14” selection.

The CEMS Club Support (CCS) team organized the simultaneous CEMS Club Conference, while further improving the successfully-implemented Student Ambassador Programme for non-European Schools. Apart from that one of the crucial tasks of the CCS Team is the continuous retention of knowledge for all CEMS Clubs and updating the CEMS Club Toolkit, while providing support for Corporate Partner Relations guidelines and Regional Events. The Global Sustainability team redefined its long-term strategy and focused on the continuation of the New Generation Consulting project and commencement of the CEMS Forest project. The Marketing and Communications team held a workshop on the Social Media presence of the Student Board and the CEMS Online Store and shot video material and interviews for future promotion purposes. Furthermore, the team met with Symonne Torpy, the Marketing Intern at the Head Office to discuss the integrated Social Media Marketing presence of CEMS. The MIM team finished the work on the CP Recruiting Benchmark, while continuing its work on the qualitative RGL Seminar Evaluation including a focus group on the latter issue and kicked off the substantial CP Virtual Engagement project.

Finally, we are proud to announce that the Student Board is engaging in establishing a CEMS App as well. The five teams managed to set their goals and accomplish their achievements respectively. Please find an executive summary of the teams’ progress and find detailed descriptions of each team in the following few pages.

Best regards, Rimli Das Gupta – President

CEMS Alumni of the Quarter The elections for the first quarter were held in March and we are just working on launching the second quarter elections at the beginning of June. This campaign is aimed at the whole CEMS community and provides an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the success of our Alumni. Each quarter we select three Alumni out of a pool of nominees. Via an online voting (published on Facebook and Twitter), CEMS students and Alumni can vote for their favourite Alumni of the quarter. An interview with the winner is published afterwards on CEMS.org. Check out the interview of last quarter’s winner Christian Cirino on CEMS.org

SAMP best practice The Student Alumni Mentoring Program (SAMP) is a great platform for current CEMS students to get in touch with Alumni and benefit from their experience and knowledge. At the same time, it is an opportunity for Alumni to stay close to CEMS, to “the next generation” and to current trends at universities. Currently, the program is run successfully at some of the CEMS member school whereas it is not offered at others. Therefore, we compiled a best practice guideline which will help CEMS Clubs and local Alumni chapters who do not have much experience with the SAMP program to implement it successfully. This best practice guide was partially presented to the CEMS Club Presidents during the CEMS Club Conference in Dublin and will soon also be made available to the local chapters of the Alumni Association.

Alumni Relations

The Dublin meeting was an important milestone for the Alumni Relations Team: we have been working together on a virtual basis since the meeting in Barcelona in December 2013, where the team was founded, but finally had the chance to discuss and develop our current projects in person. With a number of new and innovative initiatives on our activity plan, we are excited for the upcoming months and are looking forward to further enhance the engagement and visibility of Alumni within the CEMS community while cooperating closely with the CEMS Alumni Association (CAA).

Business Project Brochure for Corporate Partners A lot of CEMS Alumni are working at corporate partners but are not actively engaged in promoting the CEMS brand among their companies. A brochure about the CEMS business project will serve as a point of information for Alumni as well as potential new corporate partners. We are compiling detailed information about the requirements, dates and logistics of the CEMS Business Projects in order to make access to information easier and increase engagement of corporate partners and Alumni in terms of the business project. All this is done in close cooperation with the CEMS Alumni Association and the CEMS Head Office.

Improving the Value Proposition of the CAA and enhancing Visibility and Engagement Next to the above mentioned projects, we are also working on a number of other initiatives to promote Alumni relations among the CEMS network. This includes for example data crawling on LinkedIn or improving best practice guidelines for the local CEMS Clubs in terms of Alumni related act iv i t ies. Furthermore, we are currently starting a project to make information about the CAA more accessible and visible for students by providing information about the CAA to every students at the start of their studies. Students, past and present, is what CEMS is all about. We dedicate our time towards improving the interactions of current and former students of CEMS.

If you have any suggestions or would like to know more about our projects, we are looking

forward to hearing from you!

During the Dublin meeting, the MIM Affairs Team completed the FT Ranking analysis, a project in which an unfavorable development concerning the ranking of the CEMS MIM was analyzed and a course of action for improvement was drafted. Furthermore, MIM A f f a i r s h a n d e d i n t h e C o r p o r a t e Benchmarking Report, which describes and evaluates 22 different activities CEMS Corporate Partners can implement to attract CEMS students.

MIM Affairs used the opportunity to drive the evaluation of the Responsible Global Leadership Seminar, thereby reaching an increase in response rate of 75% during the SB meeting. Moreover, it was possible to conduct a focus group session for this evaluation project and a preliminary report was delivered for the Academic Director meeting end of April in St. Petersburg, where it was presented by the Student Board President.

In addition, MIM Affairs outlined the current projects dealing with Virtual Engagement of Corporate Partners and Students such as the ‘Job Market’, potential connections to social media platforms like LinkedIn and the web presence of CEMS. In another project, MIM Affairs will analyze the Schools Quality Ranking (SQR). The SQR is a comparative ranking of schools within the CEMS Alliance based on various different parameters such as quality of courses, administration, housing etc.

The third important new project is the development of a CEMS App (in a cross-team collaboration) for mobile devices, including feasibility of implementation and financing. For all of these projects, MIM Affairs and the respective project leaders are confident to deliver results during both the Istanbul meetings and the Annual Events in Brussels.

If you have any suggestions or would like to know more about our projects, we are looking forward to hearing from you!

Global Sustainability

From the left: Ines Jesus, Emir Çetinel, Omar Itani, Philip Kettelhodt and Sergi Capdevila

The Student Board meeting in Dublin has been a great opportunity for the Global Sustainability Team to gather opinions about our role within the Student Board and consequently to clearly define and reinforce our purpose and objectives as an active team in the board. However, there is still a lot of work to do from our side to increase our impact on the CEMS community. Therefore, several objectives were set to ensure the success and sustainability of the existing projects. Together, the team also wants to implement some new projects aligned with the CEMS values and objectives related to sustainability.   In light of these purposes, the team will continue working from now onwards in the following existing projects:

New Generation Consulting (NGC) NGC (www.ngccems.org) has become a project managed by the Global Sustainability Team this semester, and currently has three highly qualified and skilled teams of CEMS Students working with social enterprises. Moreover, the high demand of students for projects has shown the importance of taking this project to a next level, making it crucial for the development of an increasingly structured and professional organization that supports more partnerships with social enterprises, more applicants and more on-going projects per semester.

Global Sustainability Day (GSD) Last November, 5 CEMS Schools participated in the first Global Sustainability Day. The vision of the GSD is to create a day dedicated to sustainability and social responsible initiatives across all CEMS Schools. Since the first edition was very successful at Ivey, CBS, WU, RSM and LSM, we aim to foster this project and scale it to all CEMS Schools! To do so, the collaboration with the CEMS Clubs will be critical in implementing the concept locally allowing for a freedom in the vision and content at each school.

“The high demand of students for projects has shown the importance of taking this project (NGC) to a next level”

CEMStainability Booklet The Global Sustainability Team will continue publishing the Booklet in order to share the activities done by the CEMS Clubs and the Student Board related to environmental, social and economical sustainability.

We believe it can be a very useful tool for us to share the best practices and to integrate our vision in the CEMS community. The next edition will come to live in June 2014!

CEMS Forest We want to analyse the feasibility and sustainability of planting a CEMS Forest in a developing region in Africa. The purpose is to, not only create a positive environmental impact, but also an economic profit for the local community and to ensure that CEMS is an active player in reducing its environmental impact. This can be achieved by planting fruit trees that can be harvested and thus, generate an income for the community. This is the idea our team will study for the following months together with the contribution of CEMS Clubs and Head Office. We will keep you updated with the progress and more details about this project.

CEMS Carbon Footprint We will analyse the possibility to recover a project related to the reduction of the carbon footprint created by CEMS, which was already done in the past by the Student Board. But most importantly, we want to ensure its sustainability. This includes working on it together with the CEMS Head Office to truly integrate the measurement of our carbon footprint in our global organization.

But we will also work on possible future projects considered by the team:

If you have any questions or want to hear more about any of our ongoing and future projects, as well as propose ideas and projects of your own related to sustainability and

global issues to be implemented globally in the CEMS Alliance, do not hesitate in contacting us through [email protected]

Marketing & Communications

The Dublin meeting was of great importance for the M&C team, especially because we were able to have a joint workshop with the CEMS Club presidents, thus receiving important feedback on the different projects. Also, the team was particularly interested in transmitting the significance of the support from the Student Board representatives and the CEMS Club presidents to increase the reach of the M&C initiatives.   We focused on social media and the online store during the workshop. These two topics are what the team is working on currently; therefore a clearer view and the planned activities on each of these will be described in the following:

Social Media We have several channels that need to be managed in coordination with the HO, in order to balance the quality and quantity of information the community receives. We want to keep all CEMSies posted about all the events around the globe, but that could produce an overload of information. Consequently, the team will be working closely with the Marketing Department of the HO to align the communication and increase the efficacy of the posts.

We discussed the current use of Twitter and the intended future use of this media, a topic that was left for further revision and alignment with the HO. Twitter is an important tool for the Alliance in terms of communication and image, and it is critical that we are present, creating content and engaging the community to participate. We also allocated some time during the meeting to produce video content with the help of HO. These videos are currently being on the post editing phase and the final result will be released in the coming months.

Merchandise The M&C Team will focus on promoting the CEMS products, not only through the online store, but also by coordinating points of sale in different regional events, as well as continuing the sales on the Career Forum. However, the goal is to have most of the sales done through the webpage, for which the team is preparing a promotional activity plan to boost the awareness of the store and all the great products that we have.

The topics discussed in the workshop were quite relevant and we got good inputs from the participants. However, time was not enough to discuss the content and reach of the print material, which is an important topic for the M&C Team. Currently the newsletters have quite stable processes, and we can announce that the CEMS Magazine topic for the fall edition is Sustainability. Contributions were received until May 30th, and we hope many of you had something to share with the CEMS community about this topic.

The Dublin meeting was a very important one for the CEMS Club Support Team, since we also held the CEMS Club Conference, which was a great platform to raise and discuss common challenges with the CC presidents. During the two days many significant issues were brought up regarding knowledge transfer, managing alumni and corporate relations and best practices. Following up on the CCC, our team will manage the cooperation between the Student Board, Head Office and the CEMS Clubs in order to find the best possibly solutions for our challenges.

Global Ambassador Program We are launching the Global Ambassador (GA) Program for the upcoming semester as well. The aim of GA is to help building new local communities in those member schools outside of Europe where the CEMS Clubs are still in an early stage. Everyone who is coming from a more experienced CEMS Club and is about to go on exchange to one of the mentioned universities is able to apply to be a global

ambassador. It is our team’s responsibility to select the ambassadors and to help and monitor their activity in the next semester. In Dublin the question of whether to expand the program for European countries was brought up. CCS team decided to run the GA for the next semester the same way, though if the need of expanding will remain relevant in the future, we will take actions to help solve this issue.

Corporate Partner Relations in the CEMS Clubs In Dublin we realized that there is a significant need to clarify the principles the CEMS Clubs should follow when collaborating with CEMS corporate partners. At the moment our team is working on a set of corporate partner guidelines, which in the future will provide the CEMS Clubs with basic rules and tips in establishing and managing their relations with corporate partners. Besides the Head Office and the CCS team members some presidents who were willing to participate are also involved in developing the guidelines. The official proposed version of this document is expected to be finished before the meeting of the Corporate Relations Managers in June.

CEMS Club Awards and Best Practices As in the previous years, the Student Board and the CEMS Head Office will be rewarding the three best CEMS Clubs of the Spring Term. The final scores will be based on the evaluations of the students, however the Best Practice Award will be taken into account as bonus points in the competition. In Dublin we decided to increase the number of categories, thus we received many best practices connected to Big Events, Social Awareness, Socialising, Corporate Relations, Alumni Relations and Best Adapted/Recycled events. CEMS Club Conferences in the future After a very fruitful CCC at Dublin we are trying to figure out how the conference should be organized in the future. We have to take into consideration all the positive impact of such a networking and knowledge sharing event and the related costs of organizing it on a regular basis. We are searching for a solution which enables us to continue the personal collaboration with CC presidents and is also sustainable on the long run.

Clubs should follow when collaborating with CEMS

corporate partners.”

Interview Maria Teresa Montiglio: First SB from Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI), Chile

Maria Teresa, or Tere as she prefers to be called, is the first Student Board Representative from UAI in Chile. UAI is the newest academic partner to the CEMS alliance, and we wanted to know what Tere thinks about CEMS!

Was there anything unique or surprising you've discovered since joining CEMS? Even though I knew the globality of the program and all the nationalities of the students, the mix of cultures continues to impress me. I had a few conversations with current CEMSies and I realized that there are a lot of people that enter through a country that is not their home nationality, and after that they go abroad during their exchange term; that makes me believe that without the CEMS support network it wouldn´t be possible.

Regarding me, I was happily surprised when my fellow CEMSies trusted me to be their Representative. I am excited to work with the Student Board and I cannot wait to start the CEMS journey. The combination of a global program but at the same time living local in each of the 29 countries is an incomparable experience. Moreover, it is quite surprising that for being the first cohort of UAI students, and to be a relatively unknown program for Chile, that all the younger generations are filled with anxiety to know more about CEMS and to be part of it already.

Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez - Chile

CEMS STUDENT BOARD – DUBLIN NEWSLETTER

17

Why do you think it was important  for your university, your peers and your  professors to become a part of the alliance? It is important to Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez as a whole to become part of this alliance because it confirms we have been on the right path. UAI is now celebrating its 60th anniversary, since it was created as a Business School, the only one in Chile. UAI has always been a pioneer and now becoming part of CEMS is a big privilege. We are the second country in Latin America to Join this alliance, and it gives the necessary support to reinforce UAI´s international vision. Professors will be able to meet up new challenges and experience cultural diversity in their classroom, my peers will have the amazing opportunity to build a network with people that share their same interests and to see different realities with their own eyes.

What are the main things you think CEMS offers in comparison with a other Masters programs, as you work towards your future career?  For me, CEMS offers diversity and it does it globally. It’s the most international and diverse offered program in the world, with a curricula of excellence. It´s a high standard program that prepares and provides us the tools to be ready for the globalized reality that challenges us on an everyday basis; languages, countries and business problems. Having an alliance of not only academic members, but corporate partners as well makes it complete and unique. On the other hand, the practice-oriented program combination of studying and working, and having the opportunity to do so in a stretch relationship with the Corporate Partners is something that only a CEMSie could do.
