City of Joseph | JoSeph | josephoregon.orgNamed for the Nez Perce chief, the City of Joseph calls itself “the town with artitude”— that’s how important art has become to its culture and economy. Joseph is now home to a number of artists, inspired by the natural beauty of the Wallowa Mountains, the Eagle Cap Wilderness, and Hells Canyon. Their work is sold in local galleries, and each year the city hosts several art-related events, including the Wallowa Valley Festival of Arts in June.
Incorporated in 1887, Joseph originally had an economy based in agriculture, mainly grain and livestock. But after a railroad line was completed in 1908, timber became an important industry as well. When that industry declined in the 1980s, three bronze foundries opened, and some of those artists created the life-size bronze sculptures that now line the main street through town.

High Country Arts | eaGLe poinT | highcountryarts.comDon Burda’s business began as a hobby based on an interest in archaeology and wildlife. More than 30 years ago, he began carving deer antlers and selling his work at art fairs. With the help and encouragement of friends, relatives, and customers, High Country Arts grew. Today, in addition to its showroom and website, the company markets its products around the world through catalog companies, retail stores, and other websites.
Antlered animals—deer, caribou, elk, reindeer, etc.—shed their antlers every spring and grow another set by late summer. Antler gathering has been a tradition among many families for generations, said Burda, and antlers are a truly renewable resource.

Southern Oregon University | aShLand | sou.eduDesignated as the Oregon University System Center for Excellence in the Fine and Performing Arts, Southern Oregon University’s (SOU) focus on the arts began early in its history. In 1935, Angus Bowmer, SOU drama instructor, produced Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice for Ashland’s Fourth of July celebration, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival was born.
Each spring, SOU hosts the Southern Oregon Arts and Research conference, showcasing the talents of SOU poets, playwrights, painters, sculptors, and actors. Art majors at the university enjoy studio space for painting, drawing, film, video, performance art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and costume design.

Imago Theatre | porTLand | imagotheatre.comFor more than 30 years, the characters of Imago Theatre have been enchanting and entertaining both children and adults around the world. Founded in 1979 by Carol Triffle and Jerry Mouawad, the theater is known for innovative works that push the boundaries of form, design, and story. The theater has received a number of honors and awards, and Imago signature works, FROGZ and ZooZoo, have appeared three times on Broadway in New York City.
Defying classification, the company populates the stage with characters and beings such as comedic amphibians, acrobatic larvae, circus boulders, and metamorphosing humans. Imago has a broad repertoire—everything from the recently produced The Black Lizard, a popular Japanese play filled with music, dance, and magic, to the internationally popular ZooZoo, a family show featuring penguins, anteaters, cats, and other creatures.

Portland Taiko | porTLand | portlandtaiko.orgRhythm, melody, and movement are the foundation of taiko drumming, an art form with roots in Japanese tradition. Portland Taiko, founded in 1994, combines choreography with traditional and contemporary compositions for award-winning performances.
Taiko, the Japanese word for drum, has been used in religious ceremonies, community festivals, and theater. North American taiko was born in the late 1960s during the civil rights movement, when it became a powerful voice for Asian-Americans, especially during the struggle for redress of the Japanese-American internment.

Freed Gallery | LincoLn ciTy | freedgallery.comWhen you approach the Freed Gallery in Lincoln City, the first thing you notice is a garden of flower-like sculptures twirling in the wind—kinetic art created by Lyman Whitaker. Inside the gallery you’ll see art in a variety of media—paintings, photography, glass, pottery, textiles, jewelry, and more—by local, national, and international artists.
Founded 16 years ago by Lee Freed, the Freed Gallery is dedicated to strengthening the local art community. The gallery started “Let There Be Arts,” which fosters art in local schools through after-school art programs, concerts, artists-in-residency, murals in the schools, and art-focused field trips.

Lan Su Garden | porTLand | lansugarden.orgBuilt in the style of the gardens of Suzhou, China, Lan Su Garden began in 1985 as little more than a dream. By 1999, the dream was becoming a reality. More than 60 workers from China constructed the garden’s buildings and pathways, authentic plants were collected and planted, and the garden opened in 2000.
This living work of art changes with the seasons and offers a quiet place to relax in the heart of Portland. More than a garden, it has become a center of Chinese culture as well, offering art exhibits, classes, and concerts throughout the year, all focusing on different aspects of Chinese culture and history.

Portland Art Museum | porTLand | pam.orgFounded in 1892, Portland Art Museum is the oldest art museum in the Pacific Northwest. Originally housed in the public library, the museum acquired its own location in 1905 and moved to its current location in 1932. With a collection of approximately 50,000 objects, it is considered one of the leading cultural institutions in the region. In August 2012, Portland Art Museum celebrated the art of painting outdoors, en plein air, as the French say, with the region’s leading plein air artists.
Like their late 19th- and early 20th-century counterparts, contemporary plein air artists work on location to capture the atmosphere of the moment, including ever-changing colors, light, and shadows. This weekend-long event brought together dozens of artists to create new works and exhibit them in the museum’s front yard, Portland’s South Park Blocks.

Cascades Theatrical Company | bend | cascadestheatrical.orgSince 1978, Cascades Theatrical Company has been bringing theater to Bend. In addition to several main-stage productions each year, the company hosts the Summer Conservatory for the Bend Theatre for Young People, as well as short-run performances by other local and out-of-town artists. And, by sharing its costumes, props, and sets with area groups and schools, the company expresses the “community” in community theater.
Volunteers are the heart of Cascades Theatrical Company, from selecting the plays—like “Social Security” by Andrew Bergman in these photos—to acting, directing, making costumes, and building the sets. In addition to its regular season, Cascades Theatrical Company presents a NightVisions Series, which showcases local performing artists, readings by local playwrights, and dinner theater at other venues.

Hive-FX | porTLand | hive-fx.comThe oldest known cave paintings, which archeologists date back about 40,000 years, used pigment and rock to convey a visual message. Today’s artists are more likely to use a touch-screen computer and infrared stylus to make visual magic. Housed in a hip, open studio space in Portland’s industrial south waterfront, Hive-FX, founded by Jim Clark and Gretchen Miller, represents the “new” art—the kind that can bend the laws of reality to suit any purpose.
Hive-FX’s passionate artists create and produce animation, visual effects, CGI (computer-generated imagery), motion graphics, photography, and live-action sequences for commercials, films, TV shows, and print campaigns. Whether they are dreaming up fantastical creatures for NBC’s Grimm TV show (filmed in Portland) or animating talking whales, they are known for their attention to detail and quick turnaround.

Ponderosa Forge and Ironworks | SiSTerS | ponderosaforge.comBlacksmithing is an old art, one included in the ancient mythologies of many cultures. Hand-forged iron begins with fire and sparks, and it requires a hand strong enough to beat hot metal into shapes as rugged or as delicate as the artist—the blacksmith—desires. The tools used in blacksmithing are heavy, solid tools: hammers, anvils, chisels, and the forge, where metal is heated to red, then orange-yellow.
In a process as beautiful as the finished product, Ponderosa Forge and Ironworks’ blacksmith artisans have been working hot metal since 1988, creating fireplace sets, door and cabinet hardware, wine racks, and other hand-forged ironwork for homes and lodges all over the U.S.

Bountiful Farms | Woodburn | bountifulfarms.comMore than 30 years ago, Jay and Julia Nelson began Bountiful Farms, which is still owned and operated by the Nelson family. Jay Nelson ran an orthodontics practice in Salem, but the love of farming that began in his childhood never left him. At first, Jay and Julia grew hazelnuts on their farm; later they shifted to growing nursery stock.
Today, Bountiful Farms comprises more than 500 acres of nursery stock and the third generation of the family is working in the business. Not just any nursery, the Nelsons specialize in plants that have been sculpted and trained to become stars, hearts, bears, deer, horses, and any number of other artistic shapes and designs.

Ron Tonkin Family of Dealerships | porTLand | tonkin.comIn 2010, the Portland Art Museum held a summer-long exhibit of collector cars—“Allure of the Automobile”—which probably convinced any skeptics that an automobile truly can be a work of art. Of course, many others need no convincing. One of those is local car dealer Ron Tonkin, who helped sponsor the museum’s exhibit.
Tonkin, who began selling Chevrolets in 1960, has a love for all cars, but puts Ferraris at the top of his list, with more than 20 in a personal collection that also includes a Rolls-Royce and even a Chevy or two. Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo, North America’s oldest Ferrari dealership, is the only place in Oregon where you can buy a new Ferrari or Maserati. Since Ron’s semi-retirement, his sons, Brad and Ed, operate the business. They share his passion for art on wheels.

dear SaiF policyholder:
From portland to the far corners of the state, oregon’s art organizations
are important to its economy. according to The Oregonian (June 9, 2012),
arts groups added more than $250 million to the portland-area economy
in 2010 and supported more than 8,000 jobs. but that’s just one region;
the arts are important all across the state—from ashland to Joseph.
in our 2013 calendar, we focus on a broad spectrum of artists who call
oregon home. We hope you enjoy learning more about them. Thank you
for your business this year, and please have a safe and creative new year.
