The Chemainus Valley Historical Society is on the threshold of a wonderful new era with the expan-
sion of the Chemainus Valley Museum. We have been working hard to develop our plans for the
future look of our museum and have now joined forces with the Chemainus Visitor Centre. Our organization has just developed the new plans, which will give the museum an additional 3,749 square feet, divided into three floors.
We will also be building the new Visitor Centre, which will have just over 900 square feet on each of its new two floors.
Everyone is excited about this new development and feels this match will be wonderful for these two organizations.
With the help of the North Cowichan Municipality’s fund-ing of $150,000, the Visitor Centre will be finished by the spring of 2014 and will hopefully be starting the new sum-mer season in its new building.
In the last five years, the Chemainus Valley Museum has received hundreds of wonderful tins spanning over the last two centuries and many other beautiful antiques into its Artefacts section and now has run short on storage area. We have also had many donations of photographs and his-torical books, leaving our Archival area straining at its seams.
With no more room to display these wonderful items, the museum needs greatly to expand its boundaries to bring these items out into displays for everyone to view. The organization does not wish to turn any historical item away and hopes that the public will support the new growth of the museum
We are open to any and all comers, school groups and tours — our philosophy is that if you enjoy the museum, please support it by donation.
Starting at Easter, we will be open seven days a week, and we hope to see you soon.
The Chemainus Valley Historical Society is holding a sod turning ceremony on April 5 to put into motion the building of the new addition to the museum and the Chemainus Visitor Centre. The goal is to have the building finished on the exterior by the summer of 2014. The inside of the museum will be revitalized and joined with the new expan-sion, and the plan is to be reopened by the 25th anniversary of the museum in 2016.
The Chemainus Valley Historical Society has been working on the new layout of the museum and hopes to impress everyone with new and better displays. At this time, every-one is working hard to raise the funds needed to com-plete this job and hopes that the general public can see its way in contributing the funds necessary to finish the job. Donations towards this expansion can be made in person at the museum or by mail to:

World-famous muralsArt is all around us, and nowhere
is that more obvious than in Chemainus.
Chemainus has become wor ld-renowned for its gorgeous outdoor murals, which celebrate local history, people, faces and works of ar t. The first murals appeared on Chemainus’ buildings in the early 1980s when it was decided that a revitalization project was needed to bring people to town. The first suggestions of painting flowers on building walls turned into painting the history of the town on the walls. There are now 44 murals and 10 sculptures around town, and Chemainus has built
a world-class reputation around its art. The collection of murals in Chemainus features two Emily Carr pieces created from a new series.
The latest addition is one of the most unique — a 3D mural at The Silver Mine on Chemainus Road. The mural is titled Unknown Miner, and it was cre-ated by Terry Chapman of Ladysmith.
The mural, unveiled last June, is based on a photograph from the BC Archives and features a coal miner pushing an ore car t out at the Lenora Mines. What’s most unique about this par-ticular mural is that it has been sculpted into a 3D piece, with sound piped out
from the store. It is the only mural in town that has a soundtrack.
Many of Chemainus’ murals were inspired by photographs, and they are very accurate portrayals of time gone by. Visit the Chemainus Visitor Centre and ask to see the book Water Over the Wheel to see the photos that gave the artists their ideas. If you’re lucky, you might catch artists touching up the murals as you walk around town.
***You can purchase a souvenir mural
map at the Chemainus Visitor Centre. For more information about the
murals, visit www.muraltown.com.

Treat yourself to some ice cream from the new Little Bear Ice Cream Shop in the scenic Secret Garden or grab some coffee, tea or a specialty drink at one of the cozy light fare spots around town.
There are numerous eateries and cafés around Chemainus that offer a delicious lunch or a scrump-tious dinner — to eat in or take out.
You really will find something for every palate in Chemainus.

For the love of bluegrassChemainus is quickly becoming
a destination for bluegrass and mountain music lovers!
Every summer, we host the two-day Chemainus Bluegrass Festival, and it is a real highlight for many people. This year, the festival, presented by the Chemainus Valley Cultural Ar ts Society, takes place July 27 and 28 at the Waterwheel Park bandshell.
Many fabulous performers have already been lined up. Vancouver band Highrise Lonesome will make its first trip to Chemainus, and we can’t wait to hear Sue Malcom (vocals, guitar, clawhammer banjo), Vic Smyth (vocals, mandolin, rhythm guitar), Don Fraser (vocals, resophonic guitar, lead guitar), Jay Buckwold (five-string banjo) and Stu MacDonald (vocals, upright bass).
The band 5 on a String will also
be visiting us from Vancouver for the first time. The band features Gordie Sadler (banjo, lead and tenor vocals), Tim Eccles (mandolin, lead and tenor vocals), Hugh Ellenwood (fiddle, lead and bass vocals), Garry Stevenson (gui-tar, lead and baritone vocals) and Dan Mornar (upright bass, lead and tenor vocals).
You’ll also see The Hub City Ramblers,
the latest offering from mandolin ace Ira Pelletier of Nanaimo.
Also joining us will be The Maple Mountain Boys from the Cowichan Valley, who won the band competition at the last Lighthouse Bluegrass Festival.
Bluegrass Fever, considered “one of Vancouver Island’s most well-liked bands,” will also take the stage during the Chemainus Bluegrass Festival.
As a special treat this year, the Chemainus Cloggers will perform on the main stage on Sunday afternoon.
The festival features a Saturday show from 11 a.m. until after 9 p.m. at Waterwheel Park. There will also be a Sunday show on the main stage in the park from 11 a.m. until after 5 p.m. and a Sunday brunch at the Legion.

Theatre with heart and soul — it’s what makes the Chemainus Theatre Festival experience so alive,
appealing and exciting. And in 2013, the Chemainus Theatre Festival will keep up this tradition with a season full of music, comedy, drama and mystery.
“We’ll burst into celebration and laughter and delve into mystery and redemption through well-told stories on our powerful and intimate stage,” says artistic director Mark DuMez. “The diverse lineup ignites with energy through the power of nostalgia and evocative memory, journeys to emotional depths as family heroes endure impossible situations, hunts for immortality through webs of intrigue, and rejoices with wild wit as clever friends help comically star-crossed lovers.”
The Chemainus Theatre Festival’s 21st season kicked off with the rockin’ musical Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story. The 2013 lineup also includes Delicious Lies (April 26-May 18), Good Timber (May 22-June 1), Singin’ In The Rain (June 14-Aug. 25), A Pretty Girl (Sept. 13-28), Dracula (Oct. 11-Nov. 9) and It’s a Wonderful Life (Nov. 22-Dec. 23).
This year, the Chemainus Theatre Festival will investigate
our life of stories together with the addition of two themed Festivals in the spring and fall, Playwright Pairings throughout the year, ongoing Kidzplay programming and educational opportunities for the Vancouver Island community.
Along with a diverse Mainstage playbill this year, the Chemainus Theatre Festival will also impact the region in other unique ways.
This spring, Chemainus’ teen theatre troupe will interview and stage stories from elders in care facilities — stories about resilience.
New for this year, the Chemainus Theatre Festival has created Playwright Pairings, where members of the theatre’s current cast will perform staged readings of established playwrights, paired with a unique food.
Add to it all the fantastic food at the Playbill Dining Room and more than 100 B.C. artisans’ charming work in the Gallery Gift Shop and see why Chemainus shines.
The Chemainus Theatre Festival is renowned for pro-ducing exceptional entertainment. Come see classic and award-winning comedies, musicals and dramas, as well as some of the finest guest artists from across North America.

Art on the streetLast year, a group of Willow Street businesses,
spearheaded by Willow Street Café owner Phil Mavis and assisted by the Chemainus Cultural Arts Society, introduced a new event that celebrates local arts and culture by bringing it onto the streets.
ArtBeat, a weekly art walk and street party on south Willow Street, was a big hit, and it's back for a second year. ArtBeat will run Friday evenings from June 28 to Aug. 30 from 5-9 p.m. and will feature local artists and an exciting lineup of music, entertainment and art demonstrations. The street is closed to traffic, and shops and eateries stay open late to join the festivities.
For information, visit www.artbeatchemainus.com.

On the calm waters of Osborne Bay just
south of Chemainus, you’ll find history, charm, fantastic recreation and breathtaking views in Crofton.
Crofton's story dates back to the 19th century.
The original townsite of Osborne Bay was home-steaded by a small number of families in the mid-1800s. The pioneers farmed land and timber claims granted by the government of the day.
At the turn of the century, Australian-born Henry Croft developed a mine at nearby Mount Sicker, and by 1902, his mine was producing significant amounts of ore. With profits growing, Croft purchased Osborne Bay to build a copper smelter and to house his workers. The town prospered until world copper prices plum-meted, and the mine closed in 1908. Logging and fishing suppor ted the town until a large pulp and paper mill was built here in 1956.
These days, this friendly community offer s quiet parks, comfortable accom-modations and a host of family activities, such as golf-ing, swimming, fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing. There’s plenty to do in Crofton.
You can vis it the Old School House Museum, a one-room school that was built in 1905 and operated until 1948. The museum fea-tures displays of pioneer and smelter-town life, as well as a section on the school.
There’s a beautiful seawalk that begins at the lower parking lot at the Crofton Small Craft Harbour and was recently expanded to end at a sandy beach.
You can explore Osborne Bay Regional Park and watch for sea lions or orcas, or hike the trails in Maple Mountain Centennial Park, Mt. Richards and Mt. Prevost.
You can clam on the beach at Osborne Bay, and the fish-ing is good at Osborne Bay Regional Park and nearby lakes such as Quamichan Lake, Somenos Lake and Fuller Lake. Saltwater fishing is great in Sansum Narrows between Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island.
Crofton has a great out-door pool. Call 250-746-POOL for swim times or lessons during the summer.
Crofton is located off the Trans-Canada Highway, on the southeast coast of Vancouver Island, about 11 ki lometres south of Chemainus. You can reach this beautiful seaside village by taking the scenic drive down Chemainus Road to Crofton Road, which turns into Chaplin Street.
Crofton is the gateway to Salt Spring Island, a popu-lar destination known for its vibrant arts and culture scene. The ferry terminal is located right in Crofton, and Salt Spring Island is only a 20-minute ferry ride away.

Discover Crofton's charm
Come play on Thetis Island! One of the smaller, less-travelled Gulf Islands, Thetis Island is just a short ferry ride from Chemainus.
A permanent population of about 350 maintains various community services on Thetis Island, including a community hall with library and tennis court, church, elementary school, and fire and emergency response service. In the fine weather seasons, the island’s population grows to between 1,000 and 2,000 people.
People are drawn to Thetis for its Mediterranean combination of mild winters and warm, dry summers, which supports the island’s unique ecosystem and provides an ideal environment for outdoor recreation.
Once on Thetis, visitors will discover crystal clear waters, wonderful views, beautiful shorelines and delightful rural scenes. There are many diverse recreational opportunities, including scuba diving, fishing, swimming, sailing, cruising, kayaking, bird watching and hiking.
The horseshoe-shaped geography of Thetis Island lends itself to relatively short out-and-back cycling trips on quiet, paved roads. After turning left from the ferry dock, the two most popular cycling routes are North Cove Road, which is five kilometres in one direction, and Pilkey Point Road, which is eight kilometres. Both are inland, and Pilkey Point Road offers some ocean views, especially from atop Moore Hill and at Pilkey Point itself.
In the summer, the Telegraph Harbour Marina hosts a Sunday morning market showcasing local arts and crafts, seasonal produce, preserves, home baking and much more.
Wandering around the island, you will find many unique artists and shopping, including pottery, stone sculptures, stone wildlife carvings, fused glass work and more. You can buy clothing and culinary sea salts, and you will also discover a coffee roaster and tea and tarot card readings.
While visiting the island, stroll the docks at Telegraph Harbour Marina, explore their general store and enjoy a meal at the licensed bistro or soda fountain at the marina. The marina’s park-like setting provides plenty of room to roam, play, picnic and beach comb, and there’s a good chance you will spot eagles, otters, heron, deer and other wildlife.
Head to the Thetis Island Marina, where you will find a pub and family restaurant. The pub at Thetis Island Marina traces its lineage back to 1940, when what had been an old chicken coop was floated down the bay and dragged up above the high water mark to become the first building.
Boat moorage is available at the Telegraph Harbour Marina and at the Thetis Island Marina. You can buy groceries and convenience items at both marinas and find a liquor outlet, post office and bank machine on the island.
If you’re staying over on Thetis, be sure to book accommodation in advance at one of the island’s many beautiful B&Bs, as space is limited and there are no campgrounds.
***You can pick up a map of Thetis Island at the Chemainus Visitor Centre across from Waterwheel Park. You can also find
