Cal U returns several key members from last year’s historic 2012 season. Last year, the Vulcans won five league titles and set a combined 16 school records. The women’s program registered its best finishes at the PSAC Championships in program history. Junior Monique Sims headlines the women’s team after qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 100-meter dash. She became the first female sprinter in school history to finish the 100 meters in less than 12.00 seconds, breaking her own school record with a time of 11.85 seconds. The 2011 PSAC Freshman of the Year, Sims captured league titles during the outdoor season in the 100 meters and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay. The Pittsburgh native has garnered All-PSAC status 11 times in her career, including four times in the 200-meter dash. Senior Jordyn Reagan returns after becoming the first female track athlete in school history to win multiple relay titles in the same year. Last spring, she was the leadoff leg on the 4x100-meter relay and the anchor leg on the 4x400-meter relay. Reagan, a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree, set personal bests in the three events last season. Senior Shantae Motley, junior Bria Jay and sophomore Danae Burgwin also return after helping the relays win league titles. Motley ran on the 4x400 relay, while Jay and Burgwin were the middle legs of the 4x100 relay. In addition, Jay earned All-PSAC honors last spring after placing third in the finals of the 100 meters. Senior Sandy Estep will be a key member of the relay teams during the outdoor season. She holds a combined three school records and has qualified for the league championships six times as an individual. Senior Katurrah Hayman-Alston and junior Courtnee Whitaker are PSAC contenders in the hurdles. Hayman-Alston provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter hurdles in 2011, while Whitaker broke the school record and placed third at the league championships in the 60-meter hurdles last year.
Sophomore Sam Beckerleg figures to again challenge for All-PSAC status in both the pentathlon and heptathlon. Last winter, she earned all-league honors by finishing second in the pentathlon. In the jump events, junior Sierra Rogers returns after breaking the indoor school record in the triple jump. Senior Erin Kling paces the distance runners after being the team’s top runner in five cross country races this fall. Last year, Kling broke her own school record in the 3,000-meter run and became one of the first women’s track & field Academic All-Americans. Seniors Samantha Minich and Patriece Thompson figure to reach the league-qualifying marks in the throwing events. Minich has qualified for the league championships eight times in her career, while Thompson has scored in the shot put at the outdoor championships in each of the last two years. Thompson also set the school record in the weight throw as a sophomore. On the men’s side, junior distance runner Aaron Dinzeo returns after redshirting last spring. He provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 5,000-meter run and as a member of the distance medley relay. Dinzeo placed second in the 5,000 meters at the league championships last winter to earn All-PSAC honors. Sophomore Marty Zangus, who did not compete last season, returns as an All-PSAC contender in the hurdles. He advanced to the finals in both the 60-meter and 110-meter hurdles as a freshman. Junior Alex Eaton, whose brother was a National Champion hurdler at Syracuse, also returns after posting the second-fastest time in the PSAC last season in the 60-meter hurdles. Freshmen Andrew Adighibe and Aaron Barlow figure to have an immediate impact this season in the sprint events. The Vulcans look to again break records in 2013 while continuing to contend at the PSAC Championships and compete at the NCAA Championships.

ROGER KINGDOMDIRECTOR OF T&F/XC - HEAD COACH T&FNinth Year at Cal [email protected]
Daniel Caulfield enters his seventh season as the head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country programs and an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track & field teams. Caulfield joined Cal U after serving as the head men’s and women’s track & field and cross country coach at Clarion. A native of Ireland, he started coaching at his alma mater and NCAA Division II perennial
powerhouse Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. While serving as a coach with the Grizzlies, Adams State won four NCAA National Championships in women’s cross country (1998, 1999, 2003, 2004) and two NCAA men’s titles (1998, 2003). During his college career, he was a 10-time All-American and two-time NAIA National Champion and helped lead the Grizzlies’ cross country programs to National Championships in 1993-94.
Since coming to Cal U, Caulfield has mentored four-time All-American Christopher Clark, who holds PSAC records in both the 5K and 10K. He also has coached a pair of PSAC Champions in the 800 meters in Holly Urban and Clare McSweeney. McSweeney also earned All-America honors in the 800 meters at the 2010 NCAA National Championships. In 2011, Matt Kroetch became the fourth different runner in school history to win the PSAC title in the 10K.
DANIEL CAULFIELDHEAD XC/ASSISTANT T&F COACHSeventh Year at Cal [email protected]
Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Roger Kingdom enters his ninth year working with the cross country and track & field programs at Cal U. Kingdom, the former world and American record holder in the 110-meter hurdles, serves as the Director of the Track & Field and Cross Country programs at Cal U. Kingdom is a five-time United States Outdoor Champion (1985, 1988-90 and 1995) and two-time gold medalist at the Pan American Games (1983, 1995). He also holds a World Cup gold medal (1989) and won gold at the World University Games in 1989. He remains one of only two runners to ever win consecutive Olympic titles in the 110-meter hurdles (1984 Los Angeles, 1988 Seoul). A native of Georgia, he joined the Cal U athletic program in 2004 before being named interim head track & field coach in March of the following year. Shortly thereafter, he accepted the director position for both the cross country and track & field programs. In his time as head coach, Kingdom has mentored a handful of All-Americans as well as several Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) indoor and
outdoor champions. Under Kingdom’s supervision Cal U has had at least one All-American in each of the last six years, including four-time member Christopher Clark (5,000- and 10,000-meter run) and six-time honoree Brice Myers (60- and 110-meter hurdles). The women’s program has also had two All-Americans, with Danielle Malay receiving honors in the 400-meter hurdles in 2008 and Clare McSweeney earning recognition in the 800-meter run in 2010. One of the most decorated athletes in Cal U history, Kingdom mentored 14-time PSAC Champion and two-time All-American Brad Rager, who excelled in the 200- and 400-meter dashes. In 2006, Kingdom and the Vulcans hosted the PSAC Championships for the first time in program history, and two years later the men’s team posted its best finish in school history at the indoor league championships. Kingdom is a graduate of Pittsburgh and played football for the Panthers in the 1980s before concentrating his efforts on his track & field career. He set the world record of 12.92
seconds in the 110-meter hurdles in Zurich, Switzerland in 1989. Kingdom retired from active competition in 1998 and in 2005, Kingdom was inducted in to the USA Track & Field (USATF) Hall of Fame. Last year, Kingdom was an inaugural inductee into the USATF Georgia Hall of Fame. While an Olympic hurdler, he was a two-time state champion in the 120 hurdles, high jump and discus and twice was selected Outstanding Track & Field Athlete in Georgia.

SEASON REVIEW The women’s track & field team enjoyed virtually unparalleled success in 2012. During the winter, the women’s program posted its best finish in school history by placing fifth at the PSAC Indoor Championships. The success continued in the spring, as Cal U tied the 1982 team for the best performance in program history by finishing fourth at the PSAC Outdoor Championships. Sophomore Monique Sims broke four individual school records and claimed the league title in the 100-meter dash.
She became the first female sprinter in school history to record a time under 12 seconds and was selected to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 100 meters. At the PSAC Outdoor Championships, the Vulcans swept the women’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay titles for the first time in school history. Junior Jordyn Reagan was a member of both relay teams, becoming the first female athlete in program history to win multiple relay titles in the same year. On the men’s side, Cal U finished ninth at the indoor league championships and placed eighth during the outdoor championships. Senior Brice Myers earned All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in record-breaking time. He repeated as an All-American in the 110-meter hurdles for the third-straight year and broke the school and PSAC
record with a time of 13.71 seconds in the finals of the event. Myers, who won the league title in the 110 hurdles for the third-consecutive year, was named the PSAC Championships MVP and PSAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. Sophomore Marcus Givan earned the league title in the high jump by clearing 1.95 meters at the outdoor championships. Graduate student Laurie Hall, senior Tim Lahmers and junior Erin Kling were all selected Capital One Academic All-Americans in 2012 with Hall and Kling becoming the first female cross country/track & field Academic All-Americans in school history.
Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners.
While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-
Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II,
seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000
alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16
member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

2013 CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA TRACK & FIELD GUIDE26
The Cal U track & field teams were started in the early 1970s by longtime head coach Marty Uher with the help of Phil Coleman, who ran in the 1960 Olympics. The Vulcans competed as member of the NAIA and AIAW for nearly a decade. Bill Birch, high jump, and Dean Shaw, cross country, were two of the first athletes in school history to qualify and participate in the NAIA Championships. In the first few years after Cal U made the transition to competing at the NCAA level within the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), the program featured some of the best talent in the country. Arguably the most decorated athlete in school history, Brian Ferrari was a two-time NCAA National Champion in 1983 and 1984. As a freshman in 1981, he captured PSAC titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Ferrari repeated as the league champion in the 10,000 meters the next two seasons before winning both distance events again as a senior in 1984. His PSAC-record time in the 10,000 meters stood for 25 years until it was broken in 2009 by Cal U standout Christopher Clark. At the same time Ferrari was excelling in distance events, the women’s track & field team featured some of the top athletes in school history. The Vulcans boasted four individual PSAC champions from 1982-85. Jenise Lockhart, a three-time PSAC champion, was the 1985 NCAA National Champion in the high jump and still holds the school record in the event. Scott Harrison won the long jump in 1986 after winning the high jump and setting the school record in the previous season. In 1994, the Vulcans featured their first All-American in a decade when Don “Skip” Bakewell garnered laurels in the javelin. The PSAC began sponsoring a winter championship for indoor track & field in 2002 with the Vulcans making their first appearance at the event the following year. In 2004, Cal U hired one of the most prominent names in U.S. track & field history as an assistant coach, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Roger Kingdom. The following year, Kingdom was hired as head coach and the Vulcans enjoyed instant success. The men’s track & field team placed eighth at the PSAC Outdoor Championships, equaling its best finish since 1987. Cal U also boasted its first PSAC champion in 20-plus years with freshman Brad Rager capturing individual titles in the 200 and 400 meters at both the PSAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. In 2006, Cal U served as host of the
PSAC Outdoor Championships for the first time in the history of the program and finished eighth in the team standings. Running at A d a m s o n Stadium, Rager repeated as the PSAC Champion in the 200 and 400 meters after winning the
title in the 400 meters during the indoor season. Cal U boasted its first All-American in over a decade in 2007 with Clark earning the honors in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Rager captured his third-consecutive title in the 400 meters during the 2007 PSAC Indoor Championships. The programs made a large jump forward in 2008, as the women’s team placed eighth at both PSAC Championships and the men’s team finished a program-best fourth during the indoor season. The Vulcans won their first-ever relay during the indoor season in the 4x400, Rager repeated as champion in the 400 meters for the fourth-straight year, Clark won the title in the 5,000 meters and Holly Urban captured the win in the 800 meters to become the first women’s champion in any event since 1985. The outdoor season featured two more titles for Rager, who also ran on the winning 4x100 relay, while Danielle Malay won the 400 hurdles. Clark garnered All-America honors in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters as a senior in 2009 and was selected the PSAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning the league title in the 5,000 meters. Cal U also featured a NCAA Indoor All-American in Brice Myers, who was named the PSAC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. Myers continued to develop into one of the top hurdlers in the country in 2010, posting All-America finishes during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. He also captured PSAC titles in both the 60 and 110 hurdles. At both PSAC Championships, the women’s team finished sixth in the team standings to mark the program’s best finish in 25 years. Cal U claimed its first win in a women’s relay since 1985 when the 4x400 relay won the event at the outdoor championships. Senior Clare McSweeney, who was a member of the relay,
won the 800 meters and earned All-America honors during the spring. In 2011, Myers repeated as the PSAC Champion in both the 60 and 110 hurdles and finished second at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Senior Matt Kroetch became the fourth different runner in school history to win the 10,000 meters and newcomer Monique Sims was selected the PSAC Freshman of the Year during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Last year, the women’s program posted the best indoor finish in school history by placing fifth and tied the 1982 team for the best performance by finishing fourth in the outdoor season. In the spring, the Vulcans swept the women’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay titles for the first time in school history. Sims broke four school records and claimed the league title in the 100 meters. Myers repeated as an All-American in the 110-meter hurdles for the third-straight year and broke the PSAC record in the event. He was named the PSAC Championships MVP and PSAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning the league title in the 110 hurdles for the third-consecutive year. With the size of the track & field program continuing to grow each year, the Vulcans are set to build on their recent success at the PSAC and NCAA Championships.
