Butler County HistorySome of Butler County’s earliest recorded history began when first president George Washington passed through the area in 1753. He narrowly escaped death, being shot at by an Indian less than fifteen paces from him.

Created in 1800, Butler County was named for General Richard Butler, a lawyer and well-regarded colonial officer in the American Revolution. As an Indian commissioner, he helped achieve treaties by which Pennsylvania secured much of its western territory. In the greatest victory ever achieved by Natives against U.S. forces, General Arthur St. Clair’s troops were overwhelmed on November 4, 1791, leaving Butler among the casualties. Although the battle was in western Ohio, our town of Butler was named after General Richard Butler and was established as the county seat in 1803.

In 1802, the town of Zelienople was founded by Baron Dettmar Basse and named for his daughter Zelie. The neighboring town of Harmony was founded in 1804 as the first home of the Harmony Society by George Rapp and his German followers. In 1814, when the Harmonists fled Butler County, Abraham Ziegler purchased their property, organizing the Harmony Mennonites in 1816. The stone church that still stands today was built in 1825.

Slippery Rock’s Old Stone House was built in 1822 at the crossroads of the old Venango Trail and Butler to Mercer Pike as a haven for lumbermen, drovers and travelers. The Marquis de Lafayette may have stopped there in 1825. The original inn and tavern was reconstructed 50 years ago and now serves as a museum.

Saxonburg, in the southeastern part of the county, was founded in 1832 by John Roebling. Roebling also invented steel wire rope and designed the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge was then built by his son, Washington Roebling, born in Saxonburg in 1837.

In 1859, William “Uncle Billy” Smith (buried near Saxonburg) drilled the world’s first successful oil well with tools made in his own blacksmith shop. The well was drilled near Titusville for Colonel Edwin Drake and was 69 ½ feet deep. The oil boom continued south into Butler County.

Butler County made some epic transportation history in the early 1900s, including the birth of the Jeep.

George Edward “Rube” Waddell, named to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946, was raised in Prospect. Rube was one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history and known for having a colorful and eccentric personality.

Today, Butler County’s many historical societies and museums strive to preserve this impressive history. Check out these sites on page 45 or by requesting our Experience History Brochure.

Someone once said, “You can’t

buy happiness, but you can buy

ice cream. That’s kind of the same

thing.” They couldn’t be more

right. Three tasty new ice cream

establishments opened in 2012,

Debbie Lee’s Delight in

Renfrew, Katie’s Korner in

Harmony and N2osh Ice Cream and Sweets (N2 represents their

unique nitrogen freezing technique)

in downtown Butler. Equally good as

ice cream are baked goods!

Tin Man Sweets, new to Evans

City, has some of the best cupakes in

the Pittsburgh region! All four offer

something a little different, so you’ll

have to visit them all to discover their

differences!

Another thing that’s hard for some to live without is coffee.

And nothing’s better than a quaint locally-owned coffee

shop. Mars Brew House (in Mars) and Wunderbar

(German for wonderful) in Harmony are both wonderful new

additions to the county’s coffee scene.

* * * * *If you’re trying out the ice cream,

you should probably eat a “real”

meal, too. Luckily, there are

several new eateries, adding even

more dining options! There’s

nothing fishy about Jackson Fish Co. in Harmony – fresh

seafood arrives daily!

* * * *If you’re in downtown Butler,

Mimosa’s on Main is a great

new choice for breakfast or lunch.

And yes, you can have a mimosa

with your meal!

* * *If you love Springfield Grille

and the Log Cabin Inn, rejoice!

Rachel’s Roadhouse,

owned by the same restaurant

group, is now open in Butler at the

intersection of Routes 8 and 422,

right by the Butler Fairfield Inn.

* *Just south of Butler, you’ll find

honest, homemade cooking at

Reichhold’s Café, open for

breakfast and lunch.

* Coffee!

While we certainly cherish our treasures of ‘yore, there’s nothing quite like the crisp,

freshness of new things. Quite a few new businesses have popped up in the county throughout the last year. Even

if you’ve visited before or lived here your whole life, there are still some

nifty and new sites to check out!

No trip is complete without shopping. The Center of Harmony is a place for individuals and businesses that promote wellness, natural health, eco/social consciousness and community development. Three new shops worth checking out are: Eye Kandy, a clothing and accessories boutique; Pearlette, a shop for handmade jewelry, fine arts and metal work; and Harmony Wine Cellars. The Center of Harmony also welcomed Darn Yarn Needles & Thread, not a new business, but a new location! A one-stop shop for fiber arts supplies. Last but not least, The Center has a great space for hosting weddings and special events—a former opera house!

A new rustic, yet elegant, event venue opened in Butler County last year – the White Barn in Prospect. The building can be used year-round for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and business meetings for groups of up to 250. The site’s 200 rolling acres will soothe your mind and add a spectacular backdrop to your event photos.

By Ashley Lukan

Turn your eyes to the sky August 10-17, 2013 to witness unprecedented fireworks displays,

the likes of which haven’t been seen on the east coast since the early 90s. Pyrotechnics Guild

International (PGI), the world’s largest fireworks club, has chosen Cooper’s Lake Campground

in Slippery Rock to host their annual fireworks convention. Prepare yourself for BOOMS and

BLASTS lighting up the sky in Butler County as PGI celebrates everything fireworks (from safety

practices to building and artistry), then wows you with four nights of incredible public displays.

PGI’s annual fireworks convention has a different theme and location each year. In 2012 it was held in LaPorte, Indiana and titled “Fire in the Sky.” I had the pleasure of attending the convention to welcome PGI members to Butler County for the 2013 convention. My first night there left me speechless.

There aren’t words to describe what I saw there that night, sitting in

Chainsaw Carving

Invitational What’s the buzz in Butler County?

The top chainsaw carving artists from around the U.S. will converge on the Butler Farm Show Grounds

May 10-12 to show off their talents for the Butler County Chainsaw

Carving Invitational... a cut above.

Two of the invited carvers are local to this area. One

of the local carvers, Ken Tynan, was even featured on

the Discovery Channel’s reality series “Saw Dogs.”

Carve out some time to stop by and see Tynan’s and

others’ creations at this inaugural event. You won’t

regret it! From the tiny to the tremendous, these

truly unique pieces of art come in all shapes and

sizes. The best part? Artists will be transforming

blocks of wood into spectacular carvings right before

your eyes using just a chainsaw! This family-friendly

event will also feature other crafters and a variety of

food vendors. Spectators will have a chance to do

more than just admire these daring artists’ creations.

At the event’s close, an auction featuring these one-

of-a-kind masterpieces will be held. Don’t miss your

opportunity to take one home!

BOOM

Page 15: 2013 Butler County PA Tourism Visitors Guide

a Blast

the front row of the grandstands at the LaPorte, Indiana Fairgrounds. It was beyond spectacular. First you’d hear a few low booms and see the faint trails of sparks shooting, some twirling into the sky. Then came the blasts, gigantic displays of color and sparkle spanning as far as the eye can see. Around the same time, the magnificent ground displays lit up right in front of me, just like magic. These weren’t your average fireworks. They were better than that. And the best part – they are coming to Butler County.

During my time with PGI for their week-long convention, I was constantly amazed by the fireworks I saw. Some were bright; so bright

they lit up the whole grounds like it was daytime. Some were loud. In fact, the first time you hear a “Dr. X” bomb go off during the convention in Butler, you’ll know what I mean by loud. They were artistic, massive and choreographed to music (dubbed “pyro-musicals”- a favorite style of this group). One thing they all had in common though: each was fantastically unique and unlike any fireworks I had ever seen. Ever.

There is one thing I am absolutely sure of. You will be blown away by these displays. Make plans to attend at least one of the four public displays occurring at Butler County’s PGI Convention on August 11, 13, 14 and 16 at Cooper’s Lake Campground. Although I have to warn you, once you see one PGI show, you’ll be back for more. Every seat in the house will be the best seat in the house for the most amazing fireworks displays Butler County and all of western Pennsylvania have ever seen.

Revving Up for Summer with New Location and Date

The Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival is revving things up for the third year in a row, celebrating Butler as the birthplace of the Jeep. The Festival will be even more family-friendly, being held Father’s Day weekend, June 14-16. Not only is the date new, but the venue,

too. Coopers Lake Campground offers Jeep owners longer and more challenging trails, room for future Festival growth and a full-service campground permitting dogs.

The main activities of the Festival (Jeep Playground, trail rides, Show ‘n Shine, vendors and more) will now be featured over three full days. The popular Jeep Invasion street party will still be held Friday evening (the 14th) in Downtown Butler.

Last year, nearly 1,500 Jeeps from 24 states attended the event, which has quickly grown to be the second largest Jeep event in the United States. Festival Director, Patti Jo Lambert, says “The Festival celebrates our Jeep heritage

and brings thousands of Jeep enthusiasts to Butler County each summer.” With the new date over Father’s Day weekend, why not start a new Father’s Day tradition with your family by paying tribute to the Bantam jeep, the father of all Jeeps?

The Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival showcases elements that appeal to all Jeep enthusiasts. Jeep history buffs

will enjoy stepping back in time as they wander through the World War II military encampment hosted by the First Frontier Mechanized Calvary. More than 20 military Jeeps are featured in the display, and the group’s members love sharing their Jeep experiences and reliving the days when the Jeep was the star of the war. The story of how the Jeep was born is told in the history exhibit that features an original BRC-40. The exhibit includes little known facts about how Butler’s American Bantam Car Company built the world’s original Jeep.

Jeep owners who enjoy getting a little dirty won’t want to miss the Jeep Playground. Rocks, dirt, mud and more are designed to create a fun, off-road experience for Jeeps. On-site trails with varying levels of difficulty also give enthusiasts a chance to ride off-road and have fun at the same time.

Other events include Show ‘n Shine, Jeep Team Challenge, Mystery Road Rally, vendors with great Jeep merchandise, history speakers, How-To Clinics, flea market and children’s activities.

For more information about the Festival, check out www.bantamjeepfestival.com.

Curious & CunningSeneca – Old Point Alpaca ParkWith such a cute exterior, it is easy to overlook Seneca’s playful,

“trickster” mentality. Seneca routinely escapes his pedicures by lying down and tightly tucking his feet underneath himself. After his own escape, he runs around playing interference on the rest of the herd’s pedicures. Seneca is very intelligent and has plenty of friends around Old Point Alpaca Park in Chicora, including dogs, cats, guinea hens, other alpacas and, of course, visitors!

Frolicking & FriendlySilver Liberty – Four Points AlpacasBorn on the Fourth of July, Silver Liberty lives up to her name. She is gray in color, and her fleece has some very unique characteristics that will earn her recognition once she is old enough to compete. Silver Liberty takes after her champion mother in traits and personality: she is very gentle and lovable. At dusk, you will find Silver Liberty running and jumping around the field with her friends. Silver Liberty enjoys getting tons of hugs and kisses, especially from visitors to her farm, Four Points Alpacas in Butler!

Playful & ProudAndean Gold – Sunset Hills Farm AlpacasWondering how Andean Gold got his name? This princely alpaca is no stranger to gold, having won over 20 of the utmost awards throughout his show career. Judges and visitors alike can’t get enough of his wonderful traits, especially his fleece. On his off days, the friendly and playful Andean Gold can be found frolicking with the rest of his 150 alpaca friends at Sunset Hills Farm in Butler. Going GreenYou’ll always find something green in Butler County, no matter what season you visit! From the greenery in our parks and across our rolling Western Pennsylvania landscape to golf courses and a sustainable way of life, there’s no shortage of “green”! Check out some of the ways Butler County has gone green!

Cranberry Highlands Golf Course keeps their greens perfectly manicured through green practices. The golf course became the first municipal golf course in Western Pennsylvania to “mow green” in 2012. They purchased two Jacobsen Hybrid Eclipse 322 Triplex mowers and several walking Hybrid Eclipse 122F mowers to help them do this.

There are more than just natural green sites nestled in the rolling countryside of Butler County. You’ll find several sustainable meeting venues, like The Regional Learning Alliance at Cranberry Woods which is a LEED Silver-NC certified facility. Green design concepts were also used in the construction of Butler Health System’s Patient Tower.

More than just the grass is green at Old Point Alpaca Park. They’ve made improvements to their solar energy system, added in a Savonius wind generator and increased the watering rain volume. The folks at Old Point Alpaca Park strive to reduce their carbon footprint and employ environmentally-safe practices. One way they accomplish this is through the resident guinea hens that reduce parasites such as ticks and mosquitos.

The Center of Harmony became Butler County’s first eLoop electronic recycling center in 2012. The best thing is that the service is free! eLoop completely recycles, refurbishes or permanently destroys every last part of old electronics so the environment can stay healthy.

Looking to satiate your appetite at a totally sustainable restaurant? Look no further than North Country Brewing Company in Slippery Rock. You’ll find all the green fixins’ here, including a worm bin for composting and biodegradable to-go containers. Even the building is green; the structure is original to the historic 1805 building. Much of the old building has been recycled into the restaurant, like the old tin ceiling that is now the backsplash of the bar.

One man’s trash is another man’s art exhibit? That is the case at the annual “Green Show” hosted by The Associated Artists of Butler County (AABC). You’ll find sculptures made of found objects

and recycled materials that are fun for everyone. This free show features art representing environmentalism or anything predominantly green!

Aside from being one of the school colors, green is earning Slippery Rock University some recognition as one of the nation’s 286 most Green Colleges, according to the Princeton Review. SRU earned this recognition by showing an above average commitment to sustainability thanks to the implementations incorporated into the University’s new Robert M. Smith Student Center. The University has also earned silver STARS status from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

Have you had your CSA today? Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs provide subscribers with a weekly or monthly basket of locally-grown and mostly organic produce, eggs, meat, milk or other farm products. Where can you find it in Butler County? Harvest View Farm and Harvest Valley Farms both offer CSAs!

Though already a naturally green place, Jennings Environmental Education Center has developed some sustainable solutions to problems with abandoned coal mine drainage. Molded after wetlands, which are natural filtering systems, the passive systems in place at Jennings will keep the park’s greenery healthy for years to come.

Love your Mother! Please recycle this publication or

pass it along to a friend!

Want a taste of the county? A visit to Burgh’ers in Harmony or Restaurant

ECHO in Cranberry Township will get you up close and personal with tasty local and organic products. Burgh’ers sources their beef from nearby Armstrong Farms.

Some of Restaurant ECHO’s produce and herbs are so locally sourced

they come from the restaurant’s own backyard!

Moraine State ParkThe Awesome

Must be weird when one summer, there’s a huge lake

that wasn’t there last year. But that’s how Lake Arthur

came to be. While everyone was at Woodstock, the 3,225-acre lake was filling. Then in

1970, Moraine State Park was dedicated and 1,566,000 people

visited. Since then, visitation has remained strong, with Moraine being the third most-attended

state park in Pennsylvania, now receiving more than two million

visitors annually.

Natural HistorySo let’s start at the beginning… thousands of years ago, at least four continental glaciers reached their greatest extent just north of present-day Moraine State Park. In fact, the last glacier made its way to the area 20,000 years ago; the others came even earlier than that. These huge ice sheets, sometimes over a mile thick, transported stones and soil, totally reshaping the land. When the glaciers retreated, they left behind the accumulated debris, which is called a moraine… sound familiar?

Evidence of this still exists today in the Jacksville Esker (locally known as the Miller

Esker). An esker forms when meltwater drains into a glacier through fractures and flows through ice tunnels at the base of the glacier. Sand and gravel deposited along the tunnel floor remain as a long ridge when the ice melts. Esker sediment is deposited in a channel confined within the ice, rather than in a channel eroded into the ground.

The Jacksville Esker is six miles long and has a marked portion open to the public. For directions and more natural history, take the park’s “Trail of Geology” self-guided tour. Another drive-it-yourself tour that will take you by the esker is our Butler County Barn Trail. The Miller

Farm has a barn in front of the esker (thus the portion nicknamed “Miller Esker”).

Human HistoryAfter its prehistoric past comes a period of human history. American Indians found the land excellent for hunting. In the 1800s, farmers cleared the forests and drained the swamps. Sand and gravel deposited by the glaciers were mined and sold. Limestone and clay were mined to make ceramics. Local clay was also used to make bricks.

The discovery of bituminous coal ushered in a boom time for the region. Seven coal beds were deep-mined, and later the land was strip-mined. In the late 1800s,

Page 23: 2013 Butler County PA Tourism Visitors Guide

866-856-8444 / www.VisitButlerCounty.com / 2013 Official Visitors Guide 23

wells were drilled to extract oil and gas. When the wells dried up, they were abandoned and left unsealed. Much of the park area lost its topsoil, and many streams were polluted with abandoned mine drainage. Yuck!

Thank goodness for Frank W. Preston. In 1926, Dr. Preston moved to Meridian from England. As an amateur geologist and naturalist, he noticed that the hills had a unique shape and attributed it to the glacial periods. He studied the land for decades.

You can do a ton of outdoor activities (see chart on page 25).

Why is

Mor

aine

State Park such a big deal?

The annual Regatta at Lake Arthur is an excellent time to explore the park, with water,

air and land activities over two days.

With the support of friends, Preston formed the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to purchase land to recreate the glacial landscape and preserve open space. Four-hundred twenty-two gas and oil wells were plugged, deep mines were sealed, graded strip mines were back-filled, the soil was fertilized, and thousands of

trees, shrubs, grasses and clovers were planted. Muddy Creek was dammed to create Lake Arthur.

Rumor has it that there are farms and even a town under Lake Arthur. Although that is not totally true, the town of Isle,

originally located near the present-day church and Route 528 Bridge, was displaced by the creation of the lake. Some of the houses were torn down, but others were relocated outside the park’s boundaries and are still used today.

Today, a portion of the oil history is preserved at Muddy Creek Oil Field. Well #19 retains most of its original equipment, including a 100-year-old Bessemer gas engine. On select Saturdays, the area is open to the public for demonstrations. A schedule is available at www.3mjc.org.

Other Awesome AttributesMoraine State Park is 16,725 acres, with 1,750 square feet of beach, 71 miles of trails and 42 miles of shoreline. What can you do with all of that space? Hike 38 miles. Ride your horse for 20 miles. Bike seven miles. Mountain bike for six miles. Snowmobile for 26 miles. Have a picnic at one of the park’s 705 picnic tables. Keep your boat on the lake with 542 marina slips and 395 mooring spaces. Again, see the chart on page 25 for a list of all of the possible outdoor activities.

Even more fun facts…• A grass amphitheater on the North Shore can hold 40,000 people. • Visitor spending contributes to nearly 500 jobs. (Yay!)• George Washington, first U.S. president, passed through the area in

1753 on a dangerous mission which preceded the French and Indian War. (See our Washington’s Trail brochure for details.)

• America’s longest National Scenic Trail, the North Country Trail, runs through the park.

• Fishing equipment and disc golf discs can be checked out with a valid ID if not in use for educational programming.

• Free environmental education programs are offered year-round.

Big Catch at Moraine

Think the possibility

of making a record-

breaking catch in

Moraine State Park’s

Lake Arthur seems

fishy? Think again!

Butler native Bob

Schuller shocked the

community when he

reeled in a 52-inch

Muskie during an

evening fishing trip in

March of last year. The

fish was even bigger

than his 2 ½ -year-

old daughter! For

being so large, the fish

hardly fought being

reeled in. As an avid

outdoorsman, Schuller

had caught fish in

the 40-inch range in

the lake before, but

this catch was a big

surprise. He was just

happy he was able to

get it in into the boat!

With over 3,000 acres

of fishing, anything is

possible in Lake Arthur.

When will you make

your big catch?

Three Wise Men: Jennings, Preston and GoddardA love of the region brought them together, and today their legacies live on through several local parks. Frank W. Preston, Maurice K. Goddard and Otto Emery Jennings worked hand in hand to preserve McConnells Mill State Park, Maurice K. Goddard State Park in Crawford County, Jennings Environmental Education Center and of course, Moraine State Park.

As a trained researcher, Frank W. Preston enjoyed walking and mapping the land near his home in Butler County. During a trip to Muddy Creek Valley, he discovered an area of land ravaged by mining. This prompted him to create the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Through his efforts, and those of others like him, he was able to save the land known today as Moraine State Park. In addition, Preston’s home and land have recently been given to Butler Township to create another park for the county. Preston Park is in Meridian and has a prairie, pond and trails.

Another local man, Dr. Otto Emery Jennings, avidly explored Western Pennsylvania in the early 1900s. A botanist with similar interests as Preston, it is no wonder that Jennings joined the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to protect the natural treasures he discovered. The prairie, now a part of present-day Jennings Environmental Education Center, was discovered in 1905 and obtained by the conservancy in 1951.

The third man, Goddard, became a key player to these efforts in the 1950s after becoming the secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters. As secretary, Goddard dreamed of establishing a state park within 25 miles of every resident in Pennsylvania. Though he never achieved that goal, he increased the number of state parks by 45. His devotion to forestry led him to improve the state department to better maintain and protect the natural resources he cherished.

Today, visitors from all over the country come to Western Pennsylvania to observe the natural treasures these three men loved so much. While in Butler County, be sure to stop by for a walk in these beautiful parks.

Friendly FishingLooking for fish-friendly fishing? The new one-acre

Graham Park fishing lake in Cranberry Township offers

just that! Fishing in the lake is catch-and-release

only, so both you and the fish can enjoy going home

at the end of the day. Directly adjacent to the new

Scout Centennial Plaza, Graham Park fishing lake was

originally constructed to handle storm water runoff

from the park, but has since gotten a fun, family-

friendly makeover! Enjoy fishing for the lake’s bass and

bluegill year ‘round – no fishing license required!

The land was

once distraught

from mining and is

now gorgeous.

Why

is M

orai

ne State Park such a big deal?

Underwater RailroadWhat is now peaceful and green was once the site of gas well drilling and clamorous trains as the extracted oil and gas was transported out on the Western Allegheny Railroad. Moraine’s shallow oil and gas wells did not last, and soon after they dried up, the railroad was abandoned as well. Remnants of Moraine’s little known industrial past can still be seen today. The old railroad grade can be seen west of the Moraine State Park Dam and in the Muddy Creek finger of Lake Arthur.

70-year-old Man Hikes 4,600 MilesWhere were you March 22nd-October 16th, 2009? Bet you weren’t hiking that entire time, unless your name is Samuel Gardner, “Nimblewill Nomad.” In 2009, at the age of 70, Samuel hiked the entire North Country Trail. This trail is America’s longest National Scenic Trail, stretching through seven states, from North Dakota to New York. Imagine hiking for seven months straight. Now imagine doing that at age 70. That’s no easy feat!

We’re lucky to have the North Country Trail pass through Butler County. The sections maintained by the Butler Chapter pass through Moraine State Park, providing access to 15 miles of trail along Lake Arthur and past Davis Hollow and connecting to Jennings Environmental Education Center and the Old Stone House. To the North and East, the trail passes through State Gamelands 95, providing access to 13 miles of trail rich in wildlife.

Samuel passed through Butler County on July 31, 2009, day 132 of his trek. Two Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau staff members were lucky enough to have lunch with him. He did four interviews that day – two newspaper and two radio, one of which was a live half-hour on WISR. The live interview took place at North Country Brewing Company in Slippery Rock, with lunch on owner Bob McCafferty.

The North Country Trail is a wonderful asset to have in our backyard, and it’s great to have such support of the trail, and hikers so daring as Samuel Gardner. Hike a few miles on the trail when you visit. It’s clearly marked with blue blazes. Who knows, maybe you’ll be the next through hiker?

One More Awesome Asset:

Moraine Preservation Fund

If you’re at the park and happen to want some ice cream, Moraine Preservation Fund (MPF) has got your back. Their Owlet Gift Shop has a unique collection of nature gifts and collectibles. Drop by for a souvenir or a Marburger Dairy drink. You can also say hi to the three barn owls and red-tailed hawk that reside at the shop.

Perhaps MPF’s most exciting contribution to the park is the Nautical Nature, a 45-foot pontoon boat. Narrated tours, brunch cruises, dinner cruises and fall foliage cruises are offered late-May through October. Enjoy the gorgeous scenery of the park while learning about some of the fund’s great volunteer projects like osprey reintroduction and Project Batitat.

Will you be one of the million+

visitors to explore Moraine State

Park this year? We sure hope so! No

matter the season, you’ll be sure to

find fun and breathtaking scenery.

Each October, the Buffalo Creek Half Marathon is held along the trail. This 13.1 mile event attracts a thousand runners of all ages and benefits trail maintenance and improvements. Cash prizes are given.

Through the years, the thunder of trains and the hum of trolley cars have been replaced by the quiet crunching of crushed

limestone. The Butler-Freeport Trail offers a scenic biking and walking path from Butler to Freeport in the southeastern corner of the county. The 21-mile trail is now completed with solid improved surface from Freeport to Butler for the first time since

its inception in 1992. The City of Butler has access on Herman Road/Zeigler Avenue. Further construction is planned for

this year to bring the trail into Father Marinaro Park.

This project includes a bridge over a creek,

thus putting trail riders into the city without navigating a busy roadway.
