The May Day celebration saw floats designed by various groups including school children, volunteer groups, sports clubs, fire fighters and, for the first time, the Central Australian Aboriginal Congress. Four awards were given out on the day, including Best in the Parade, which was won by Teppa Hill Pre-School. The Best other Pre-School entry was awarded to Gillen Pre-School, the Girl Guides won the Best Community entry, and the Best other entry went to Home Hardware, who generously donated their winnings straight back to the Rotary Club of Alice Springs. Bangtail Muster organiser David Mortimer said this year’s parade was the best they’d had for more than 30 years. ‘‘We’ve been working hard over the last three years to build it back up, so we were very pleased with this year’s parade,’’ he said. The origins of the parade can be traced back when cattle were the main industry of the Centre, and the stockmen would cut the ends of the tails to record how many cattle were mustered.
