The Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences concluded another successful

year! What an exciting time to be the dean of our university’s most active and engaged academic college. I am filled with pride and I hope you are, too, by our academic programs and community outreach efforts, as well as the many examples of success represented through the efforts of our faculty, staff and students.

We undertake our educational mission with enthusiasm and a sense of purpose because we know all too well that the students we serve today are the foundation for our collective future. When we succeed, our nation, state and local communities are served by a multitude of skilled, dedicated and resourceful leaders as our students graduate and enter the workforce.

Likewise, we seek to engage and support the greater community through intensive outreach programs as diverse as Peace Meal, Child Care Resource and Referral, the Business Solutions Center and the Center for Clean Energy Research and Education. The benefits provided through these programs, coupled with our on-going efforts to expand our primary academic mission, are providing a strong foundation for the future.

As an example of our success, I am pleased to report the following:

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS CENTER 4,490 people received training and assistance through outreach services, with 75 junior high students participating in the Effingham Junior High Entrepreneurship Club.

CENTER FOR CLEAN ENERGY RESEARCH AND EDUCATION (CENCERE) Eastern broke ground on a nearly 5,000-square-foot research center adjacent to the newly constructed Renewable Energy Center.

CHILD CARE RESOURCE AND REFERRAL Offered 105 workshops and assisted more than 350 families as they sought child care within the six-county area CCR&R serves.

SCHOOL OF BUSINESS The Country Financial College-to-Career program was awarded the 2012 Provost’s Award for Integrative Learning. The program, generously underwritten by Country Financial of Bloomington, Ill., actively encourages students to expand their professional experiences beginning with their freshman year and culminating

with graduation. Upon completion of the program, students will have developed the confidence and skills to make a successful transition to the business world -- the perfect complement to a degree from Eastern Illinois University!

SCHOOL OF FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES The School of Family and Consumer Sciences was granted reaccreditation by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) Council for Accreditation. Additionally, both the undergraduate dietetics program and the graduate dietetic internship program were granted continued accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) following a midterm review of their earlier 10-year reaccreditation.

SCHOOL OF TECHNOLOGY Eastern’s first dual-degree program involving the Master of Science in Technology and Master of Science in Sustainable Energy programs was approved. The new dual-degree program provides students opportunities to pursue both degrees with 12 credit hours of overlapping courses applied toward both degrees.

DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY SCIENCE The ROTC battalion fielded two

Ranger Challenge teams as they competed against regional schools at the Ranger Challenge Competition at Camp Marseilles, Ill. Teams competed in events such as rifle marksmanship, physical fitness, one-rope bridge building, grenade throw and land navigation, then culminated in a 12-mile road march.

FACULTY ACHIEVEMENT With pride, I am happy to report the following examples of our many talented faculty:

Drs. Crystal Duncan-Lane and Katie Shaw, FCS faculty, were chosen as senators to represent the state of Illinois at the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) conference.

Dr. Marko Grünhagen, Lumpkin Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship in the School of Business, received the 2013 Associate Editor of the Year award from the Journal of Small Business Management.

School of Technology faculty, Drs. Julie Chadd and Lance Hogan, were recipients of EIU Achievement and Contribution Awards in the teaching category. The award recognized their outstanding contributions to the university during the 2011-2012 academic year.

Dr. Michael Dobbs, assistant professor of management in the School of Business, was honored with the Best Paper Award at the 23rd annual conference of the American Society for Competitiveness in Washington, D.C., for his paper titled, “Porter’s Five Forces in Practice: Templates for Firm and Case Analysis.”

The EIU Office of Disability Services recognized FCS faculty for exemplary willingness to make accommodations and support the needs of students with disabilities. Honored faculty included Ms. Misty Baker, Ms. Deborah Reifsteck, Ms. Christina Yousaf, Dr. Axton Betz-Hamilton, Dr. Crystal Duncan-Lane and Dr. Kathleen O’Rourke.

School of Technology faculty received Redden Grants to support their research and teaching initiatives: Dr. Rendong Bai, Mr. Bruce Barnard, Dr. Jerry Cloward, Ms. Bev Cruse, Mr. Gabriel Grant, Dr. Thomas Hawkins, Dr. Lance Hogan, Mr. Aaron Melton, Dr. David Melton and Dr. Luke Steinke.

Mr. Mike Wilson, Beta Gamma Sigma chapter adviser and School of Business faculty member, was recognized as the Outstanding Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Adviser.

Dr. David Fleming, assistant professor of marketing in the School of

Business, received the best paper award in the Marketing Education Track at the 2013 Marketing Management Association Conference for his co-authoring of a paper titled, “Trends in Academic Research: A 15 Year Analysis of Published Research in Marketing Journals.”

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT And, I am especially boastful of our many talented students!

Gerontology students Jake Ozier and Rachel Hawn were honored as recipients of the Distinguished Graduate Student Award. Ozier was named the Distinguished Gerontology Student, while Hawn received the Provost’s Research Assistantship Award.

School of Business students presented posters documenting their internship experiences. The public was invited to attend an open forum in which student interns gave presentations and answered questions. Interns featuring their experiences included: Megan Babyak, marketing major, EIU Health Education Resource Center; Brittany Carlberg, marketing major, Effingham Performance Center; Sarah Easter, marketing major, Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce; Andrew Hayes, management major, TRM Management; Cori Hilton, marketing major, EIU Athletic Marketing; Brett Jopa, marketing major, EIU

Athletic Marketing; Alyssa Stockton, marketing major, EIU Athletic Marketing; Jordan Vose, marketing major, Mattoon YMCA; and DeAnn Jiles, management information systems major, Larsson Woodyard & Henson.

Business students helped a local historic site, Lincoln Log Cabin, market its gift shop. Slow sales had become a source of frustration, but these concerns presented the School of Business marketing students a golden opportunity for some hands-on experience in a real-life business environment.

ROTC cadet Matthew Bochenek was named among the top 1 percent of cadets in the nation. He was ranked 55th in the entire U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.

Josh Fourman and Laura Lucas, both graduate students in the MS in FCS program, were awarded research grants from the Graduate School for their theses.

Jennifer Cannon, MS in FCS graduate student, had her research project featured at the 2013 Graduate Showcase. Jennifer conducted research in organ donation among minorities. Dr. Lisa Moyer, associate professor, FCS, was her faculty adviser.

Business students gained vital business experience from an MBA learning exercise as part of the MBA Capstone Simulation. An example of real-world learning, the capstone course allowed students to manage investments and compete against fellow students at colleges and universities from across the U.S. and abroad.

We look forward with a renewed sense of purpose for the year ahead. Please join me in celebrating the many examples of excellence within our college!

Your continued dedication -- through service on advisory boards, attendance at alumni events, assistance in career counseling and placement of our students in internships, as well as the vital financial support you give each year for the awarding of scholarships -- is to be commended. KEVIN SEITZER ‘85 (Industrial Technology)

Currently in his fourth season as the hitting coach for the Kansas City Royals, Kevin Seitzer ‘85 finished his 12-year major league baseball career with a .295 batting average, 74 home runs and 613 RBIs in 1,439 games for the Royals, Brewers, A’s and Indians. Playing in more major league baseball games than any other EIU graduate, he was an American League All-Star

during his rookie season in 1987, and again in 1997 while playing in the World Series as a member of the Indians. He set six Kansas City rookie records and finished second in voting for the 1987 American League Rookie of the Year after playing in 161 games and leading the league in hits with 207. Seitzer is one of three Royals to record six hits in a game, and still holds the team record for career on-base percentage at .380. He has also excelled as a hitting coach, with his 2010 team finishing with the second-highest batting average in the majors. In 2011, the Royals became the first team in major league history to have three outfielders hit more than 40 doubles in a season. In partnership with a former teammate, he owns and operates a highly successful 47,000-square-foot, year-round baseball and softball training facility in Kansas City, as well.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENTS

ESTABLISHED IN 1973, THE DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD IS THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS AWARD THAT IS BESTOWED BY THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION. THIS AWARD IS PRESENTED TO INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES IN EITHER ACADEMIC OR LITERARY FIELDS, BUSINESS, PUBLIC SERVICE AND/OR SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY AND WHO, THROUGH THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND SERVICE, HAVE BROUGHT PRESTIGE TO THEIR ALMA MATER. ALUMNI NOMINATED FOR THIS AWARD MUST HAVE CELEBRATED, AT LEAST, THEIR SIXTH CLASS REUNION. IN THE CASE OF AN ALUMNA/US WHO DID NOT GRADUATE, CLASS YEAR WOULD BE DETERMINED BY THE YEAR HE OR SHE WOULD HAVE GRADUATED.

CHRISTOPHER DESMOND ‘94, ‘96 (Management, MBA)

Christopher Desmond ‘94, ‘96 is the chief sales officer for the private transfer pricing company, CETERIS, the largest independent provider of transfer pricing services in North America. After graduating with his MBA in 1996, he began his transfer pricing career at Ernst & Young and then PricewaterhouseCoopers. In 2003, he joined his former national practice leader from E&Y to help launch CETERIS. Since the initial launch, he has led the firm’s national marketing and sales efforts and developed business and communication strategies that enabled the firm to gain clients such as Nike, ADM and Goodyear. CETERIS has since expanded to 14 offices in four countries and has been named one of the 500 Fastest Growing Companies in America by Inc. magazine each of the past five years. Named a World’s Leading Transfer

Pricing Adviser by his peers in 2011, Desmond is also known for his philanthropic efforts which include volunteering as the president of the EIU Delta Chi Alumni Association for the past eight years. Also, in 2003, he and wife, Nancy, a fellow EIU graduate, established a scholarship at the university for students from single parent households.

LOUIS V. HENCKEN ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT

FIRST PRESENTED IN 1988, THE ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD IS PRESENTED TO ALUMNI WHO HAVE REPEATEDLY DISPLAYED OUTSTANDING VOLUNTARY SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY. IN 2007, THE NAME WAS CHANGED TO THE LOUIS V. HENCKEN ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD IN HONOR OF EASTERN’S OUTGOING PRESIDENT. LOU HENCKEN SERVED EASTERN IN A VARIETY OF ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS AND WAS NAMED UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT ON AUG. 1, 2001. HE RETIRED FROM THE PRESIDENCY ON JUNE 30, 2007, AND CURRENTLY SERVES ON THE FACULTY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP.

CARL MITO ‘72 (Finance)

Carl Mito ‘72, managing director-investments at Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. in Chicago, has volunteered in a variety of capacities at EIU, including as a member of both the School of Business Advisory Board and the EIU Foundation. A three-term member

of the School of Business Advisory Board, he was an early supporter of the Securities Analysis Center and later hosted events in his Chicago office to connect business graduates with the university and promote the center’s benefits to students.

He and his late wife established the Carl and Marion Mito Excellence in Finance Endowment Fund in 2003 to benefit the School of Business on an ongoing basis as part of his philanthropic commitment, which includes nearly $325,000 in gifts to support the university’s students.

A member of EIU’s Capital Campaign External Steering Committee, which provided guidance as the university significantly exceeded its goal, Mito also delivered the commencement address to EIU’s graduates in December 2011. Having joined Delta Chi fraternity as an undergraduate, he has maintained his connection with that group, and assisted with the

Propst returned to the classroom in 1991, including one year as an adjunct faculty member at her alma mater prior to assuming her current position as a teacher at Paris High School, where she has been for the past 18 years. Within two years of beginning at Paris, her enrollment in family and consumer classes had doubled, necessitating the expansion of the program to a two-teacher department. During her tenure, she has implemented a variety of programs designed to bring real life into the classroom. This includes implementation of the “Baby, Think it Over” program in parenting classes to provide an avenue for her students to gain a better understanding of the demands of parenthood. Her living environments class undertook the remodeling of a local house where students learned about room design, painting, upholstery and basic home repair tasks. Propst has worked with other teachers in her school to implement several interdisciplinary projects including textile research labs with the chemistry department. She also helped create and implement the pilot program for the Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies High School Level One Credentialing Program in early childhood education. The work she and her students have accomplished in the classroom has been featured numerous times in local newspapers

ANGELA PROPST ‘77, ’78 (Family and Consumer Sciences)

Angela Propst earned her bachelor’s degree in home economics education in 1977 and her master’s degree in home economics in 1978, both from Eastern Illinois University. After graduating, she began to obtain the invaluable life experiences of raising her children and running a household that make her the effective educator she is today. During this time, she remained active in education by serving as a substitute teacher in two districts and working as a reading tutor and regional preschool screener.

Propst served as a 4-H club leader where she assisted club members with clothing projects and served as a judge for foods and clothing projects in five different counties. She also coordinated a variety of service projects through 4-H and her church activities, utilizing her sewing skills.

In addition to his continuing support of the institution, he also sits on the board of directors for the Cancer Wellness Center and serves on the executive committee, co-chairs the fundraising committee and leads Team Marion for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition Walk as he continues as a supporter of the fight against cancer.

OUTSTANDING GRADUATE ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENTS

SINCE 1951, EASTERN HAS OFFERED ADVANCED STUDY WITH MASTER’S PROGRAMMING. SINCE THAT FIRST OFFERING, THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS HAVE EARNED GRADUATE DEGREES, AND EIU GRADUATE ALUMNI HAVE CHANGED THE WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE. IN 2005, EIU CELEBRATED MORE THAN 50 YEARS OF GRADUATE EDUCATION BY HONORING 50 GRADUATE ALUMNI AS OUTSTANDING GRADUATE ALUMNI. THAT SAME YEAR, THE GRADUATE ALUMNI ADVISORY BOARD WAS CREATED AND MET FOR THE FIRST TIME. SINCE THOSE INITIAL 50 HONOREES, THE GRADUATE ALUMNI ADVISORY BOARD, THE GRADUATE SCHOOL AND EIU’S GRADUATE PROGRAMS HAVE CONTINUED TO HONOR THE ACHIEVEMENTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR GRADUATE ALUMNI EVERY YEAR. IN SPRING 2012, THREE GRADUATES OF THE LUMPKIN COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND APPLIED SCIENCES WERE AMONG THE HONOREES.

and by local television stations showcasing the importance and diversity of FCS within the community.

Her belief in the importance of vocational education resulted in being named vocational director. As such, she represents the agriculture, auto technology, business, family and consumer sciences, health occupations, industrial technology and special vocational education departments. She has attended multiple workshops and programs designed to more successfully relate lessons learned in the classroom to life and instruct students on potential career opportunities within these fields of study.

Propst has also been an integral part of Paris High School’s school improvement initiative, High Schools That Work, by serving on several committees and acting as a representative at several state meetings and always ensuring that career and technical education at Paris High School provides rigor, relevance and relationships to the students who are enrolled. Propst has taken an active role in ensuring the future of family and consumer science education by serving as a practicum site for EIU; she’s supervised more than 10 student teachers and/or practicum students.

She was recognized as a Secondary Education Outstanding Practicum Teacher from Eastern Illinois University for three consecutive years. She has also served as the FCS representative for a CTE course titled “Inquiry to Teaching Career and Technical Education” for more than 12 semesters. She is a member of a variety of advisory, scholarship and community committees with the goal of furthering education in FCS and other vocational programs.

JOHN SIPES ‘ 00, ’03 (Sociology, MBA)

After graduating from EIU with a master’s degree in business administration in 2003, John Sipes joined the staff of First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust, a bank that was first chartered in 1865 and has since grown into a more than $1.5 billion community-focused organization that provides financial services

through a network of 38 banking centers in 25 Illinois communities. Sipes initially joined First Mid as a financial analyst and was then named vice president, asset/liability officer, in 2010. Sipes currently manages the bank’s investment securities (in excess of $500 million in 2012), cash and cash equivalents, and certificates of deposit investments. He also chairs the bank’s Asset/Liability Committee (ALCO), which is responsible for setting loan and deposit rates and managing interest rate risk. Sipes directs the corporation’s annual budgeting process (with revenue of nearly $68 million and net income in excess of $14 million in 2012), organizes the corporation’s insurance coverage and coordinates the bank’s real estate leases. As a member of the bank’s acquisition team, Sipes was most recently involved with First Mid’s acquisition of 10 branches of First Bank in 2010. That acquisition allowed First Mid to expand into six additional communities throughout central Illinois and added more than $300 million in assets to the bank.

Before enrolling in EIU’s MBA program, Sipes was a flight instructor for The Flightstar Corporation at Willard Airport in Savoy and worked at BankIllinois and First Federal Savings and Loan of Champaign-Urbana. He earned a bachelor’s degree from EIU in 2000, and is very

thankful to the professors in Eastern’s MBA program who helped him develop strong analytical and finance skills. Those skills have proven to be the foundation of his career at First-Mid. Sipes is especially appreciative of the mentoring that he received from Dr. Cheryl Noll, Mr. David Arseneau, Dr. William Minnis and Mr. Doug Zuhone. He is also thankful for the mentoring of Drs. Reed Benedict, Craig Eckert and Gary Foster throughout his undergraduate studies in the sociology program at EIU.

He and his wife, Jenny, continue to cheer on the Panthers as they reside in Charleston with their two children, Anna (age 11) and Joshua (age 8). (Anna was born during John’s first month in the MBA program!)

MARDELL WILSON ED.D. ’92 (Family and Consumer Sciences)

Mardell Wilson earned her master’s degree in home economics from

EIU in 1992. As part of her program, she completed the Pre-Professional Practice Program in Dietetics. Prior to attending Eastern Illinois University, Wilson completed a bachelor’s degree in human resources and family studies from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Following graduation from EIU, she practiced as an outpatient dietitian at BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Bloomington/Normal, Ill. After a year in practice, she accepted a position at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill., as assistant professor and program coordinator for family and consumer sciences. Shortly after beginning a career in higher education, Wilson recognized the need to continue her education and completed her doctorate at Illinois State University in curriculum and instruction (1999), with a complimentary field in family and consumer sciences. Wilson attributes her decision to pursue an educational doctorate versus a more traditional path in nutritional sciences to the emphasis and commitment to teaching that was exemplified in so many of her courses at EIU.

In 1997, Wilson joined the faculty in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Illinois State University, serving as director of the graduate dietetic internship program.

Currently, she serves as professor and associate vice president for academic fiscal management at ISU. As fiscal agent, she provides general oversight and accountability of budgets and budget priorities for general revenue, agency and foundation accounts for the Office of the Provost and the Division of Academic Affairs. She also serves as director of Summer Session where she evaluates, plans, organizes and promotes for-credit courses in the summer session. In addition, Wilson provides oversight for contract and full cost recovery courses, the Cross Endowed Chair, and the Stevenson Center and Conference Services. Prior to serving as the AVP for academic fiscal management, Wilson served as assistant provost and director of university assessment at Illinois State. Illinois State University’s Leadership Initiative was developed in 2010 under her direction.

Wilson also currently serves as the president for the Council of Administrators for Family and Consumer Sciences and has held various leadership roles in her discipline at the regional, state and national levels. She served on the capital campaign committee at Trinity Lutheran School, helping raise $2.1 million for the construction of a new school building. Throughout her career, she has given numerous presentations and has more than 20

an in-depth knowledge of all phases of the software development life cycle. Kandavalli earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Bapatla Engineering College, Nagarjuna University in India, in 2003. He earned a master’s degree in technology at EIU in 2006. He writes, “I arrived at EIU in August 2004 on the university-provided shuttle from Chicago O’Hare Airport with about eight other international students whom I just met at the airport. As a guy in his early 20s who has never been to a foreign country, I experienced what it’s like to step into a different culture, to stay with people whom you have just met, figuring out where to live, studying in a new education system, trying to find something to do in your spare time. I was a benefactor of all the support extended to me by the International Programs office, starting with the shuttle service to the day I graduated and left EIU. I know for a fact it is not the same in every university, and I am an advocate of how EIU is different and how we understand and cater to the needs of different students coming from different parts of the world.”

Kandavalli and his wife, Swarna Bangaru, were acquaintances before they both arrived at EIU to study; they were married in 2010.

Krupa Praneeth Kandavalli currently works as a senior business analyst for Merck & Co. Inc. in Hunt Valley, Md. Merck & Co. Inc. is a global research-driven pharmaceutical company working to discover, develop, manufacture and market vaccines and medicines to address unmet medical needs. In his duties with Merck, Kandavalli has gained expertise in project management and

peer-refereed publications. Lastly, she has been the recipient of several awards and honors, including Illinois Outstanding Dietetic Educator.

Wilson holds many wonderful memories of her time at EIU. At one point, she was given the opportunity to serve as the instructor for a basic nutrition class of nearly 100 students, and attributes this opportunity as a pivotal point that inspired her to consider a future career in higher education. Drs. Ruth Dow and Carol Ries served as role models and mentors. Her fondest memory is that of she and her husband, Dave ’91, being married during her first semester at EIU. As a professor herself, she has even greater respect for Dr. Dow’s tolerance of this mid-semester decision. Wilson enjoys running, biking, baking (an illustration of her love for food science), and traveling with her family. Wilson and her husband have two sons -- Jonah (12) and Elliott (8).

ABDOULAYE TRAORE ‘07, ’09 (Finance, MBA) (Burkina Faso)

Abdoulaye Traore is a native of Burkina Faso in West Africa. He came to EIU in the spring of 2003 for the Intensive English Program. Active in many student organizations, Traore served as president of both the Association of International Students and the African Student Association, and was a student senator in EIU’s student government. He earned a bachelor’s in finance in 2007 and his MBA in 2009. He received several scholarship awards while studying at EIU, including the Thomas Elliott School of Business Scholarship, the School of Business MBA Foster Rinefort Scholarship Award, and the Outstanding International Student Award.

Carl Mito ‘72, managing director-investments at Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. in Chicago, has volunteered in a variety of capacities at EIU, including as a member of both the School of Business Advisory Board and the EIU Foundation. A three-term member of the School of Business Advisory Board, he was an early supporter of the Securities Analysis Center and later hosted events in his Chicago office to connect business graduates with the university and promote the center’s benefits to students.

He and his late wife established the Carl and Marion Mito Excellence in Finance Endowment Fund in 2003 to benefit the School of Business on an ongoing basis as part of his philanthropic commitment, which includes nearly $325,000 in gifts to support the university’s students.

A member of EIU’s Capital Campaign External Steering Committee, which provided guidance as the university significantly exceeded its goal, Mito also delivered the commencement address to EIU’s graduates in December 2011. Having joined Delta Chi fraternity as an undergraduate, he has maintained his connection with that group, and assisted with the planning of its 2006 alumni reunion on campus.

In addition to his continuing support of the institution, he also sits on the board of directors for the Cancer Wellness Center and serves on the executive committee, co-chairs the fundraising committee and leads Team Marion for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition Walk as he continues as a supporter of the fight against cancer.

In 1971, after taking time away from Eastern to teach and begin raising her family, she began work as a substitute teacher in the EIU Lab School. She later worked as an office manager, first in Eastern’s Philosophy Department, then in the Management/Marketing Department. She eventually migrated to Old Main in the Department of Grants and Research, working there from 1981 until her retirement in 1993.

Giffin has served as an avid volunteer throughout the EIU campus and Charleston community for many years. Behind the scenes, she and her late husband, who was the founding dean of Eastern’s College of Business, served as a “welcome wagon” to faculty and hundreds of students who crossed their paths in the classroom, as student workers, as renters, and students in need. The couple willingly helped any student desiring an education, and adopted many as surrogate children and grandchildren.

The couple also established both the Elsie and Erson Giffin and the Jim and June Giffin scholarships through the EIU Foundation. Giffin’s current efforts center mostly on Eastern’s Peace Meal Senior Nutrition Program, the Tarble Arts Center, as an usher for the Doudna Fine Arts Center, as a member of the EIU Annuitants Association, and as a volunteer

DENNIS SPICE ’78 (General Studies)

Dennis Spice serves as president of Institutional Advisors, Ltd., a consulting firm he began in 1995. His many other accomplishments since receiving his bachelor’s degree in management from Eastern include serving as founding partner and managing member of Open Prairie Ventures I, LP, a $40 million capital fund that focused on investments in Midwest-based seed and start-up companies. He was a member of the board of directors of Infoblox, Cernium, Eagles.net, ReVas, Innovative Security Systems Inc. and Computrol.

Further, he was a managing partner of Prairie Capital Partners, which leased equipment to companies in the Midwest; a managing director

in Agrarian Capital, a private equity firm focused on agricultural industry investments; and an investor and adviser to harVestco Agricultural Properties.

As a nationally recognized expert, Spice has testified on pension and investment issues before the Department of the Treasury, the Internal Revenue Service, the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., and the Illinois General Assembly.

Prior to founding his own company, Spice was the executive director of the State Universities Retirement System of Illinois (SURS). He joined the system in 1980 and was appointed director in 1991, a position he held until 1995. Previously, he was employee benefits manager at EIU.

Over the years, Spice has given countless hours of service to EIU. He recently agreed to serve on the newly formed School of Continuing Education Bachelor in General Studies Degree Alumni Board. He has also served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors, the School of Business Advisory Board for six years, the School of Technology Advisory Board for 11 years, and on the Foundation Board of Directors for five years.

He and his wife, Linda, established the Spice Entrepreneurship Fund at EIU in 2002, supporting projects that promote the spirit of entrepreneurship for the School of Business and School of Technology.

DON GHER ’73 (Marketing)

Donald L. Gher of Bellevue, Wash., received an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from Eastern Illinois University in recognition of his dedication, his generosity, and his

service to others.

Gher graduated from Eastern in 1973 with a degree in business and a concentration in marketing. A fellow alumnus and classmate said of him, “Don exhibited the energy and drive that would propel him through his immensely successful business career. In class, he was always at the ready to help a friend, dive into a project, and eager to debate with professors, which often made class sessions memorable.”

Gher parlayed that energy and drive, along with his education, into a diverse and exciting career. Professionally, he held several positions, including head of a multi-billion dollar trust /investment department for the Marine Bank of Springfield, and portfolio manager/analyst for the Public Employees Retirement Association of Colorado and Kingsley, Jennison, McNult and Morse in San Francisco. He served as general manager, Wertheim Schroder, Tokyo, and as fund manager/analyst for Bank of America Investment Management in Seattle.

Gher retired in 2007 as managing director/chief investment officer of Coldstream Capital Management, which he co-founded in 1996. He was awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1981 and, in 2006, was one of only 20 CFAs

worldwide to be awarded the first 20-Year Certificate of Continuing Education.

Upon retirement, Gher essentially became a teacher. Having developed as an expert in his field, he now spends much time in Eastern’s School of Business, guiding students interested in an investment career and serving as a frequent guest speaker for EIU’s security analysis class. He diligently provides considerable email address contacts to the university and to the EIU Foundation with an emphasis toward investment education, performance reviews and strategies.

Gher was named as EIU’s School of Business Distinguished Alumnus in 2003 and a Distinguished Alumnus by the EIU Alumni Association in 2007. He is a former member of both the EIU Business Advisory Board and the EIU Alumni Association Board of Directors. After serving more than six years on the EIU Foundation Board, Gher retired; however, he continues to serve as a volunteer on the Foundation’s Investment Committee.

In the words of one of Gher’s friends: “Don remains one of the busiest ‘retired’ people I know. I have been amazed at his continued dedication to his church, his alma mater,

Coldstream, and a variety of other organizations in the community. When I’ve asked him why he hasn’t slowed down more, he responded that after a lifetime of work, he wanted to ‘do work for his soul.’”

It was a banner year for the Business Solutions Center (BSC) as we posted our best numbers yet; 4,490 people received training/coaching through our outreach services. Director Jeanne Dau, Office Administrator Jennifer Garren, BSC Coach Tiffany Kline, Graduate Assistant Halee Harrison, and students Sean Wiggan, Taylor Gandolfi and Nike Ogunbodede helped as we focused on four main services that fulfilled our mission of providing early entrepreneurship education and business support services to entrepreneurs and existing businesses to spur economic growth and grow our own entrepreneurs.

PRAIRIESPARK E-HUB We received a $32,688 grant from Broadband Illinois to create and promote an online digital resource center that gives entrepreneurs everything they need to develop their own business. It features a great collection of videos, games and classroom resources to bring entrepreneurship into the classroom. Another unique feature of the site is specifically created regional geographic information systems (GIS) maps of the eight counties we serve that are filled with market analysis to assist in site selection and sound business decisions.

A team of 21 staff, consultants and students from both Eastern Illinois University and Lake Land College worked on this project. Multiple videos were created by students in EIU’s Center for Academic Technology to illustrate the programs, and the Entrepreneurship: Bright Ideas Workshop was held April 11 to roll out the website (www.eiu.edu/prairiespark). Billboards, posters and radio advertisements have helped promote this wonderful resource.

ClassE - COLES COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL ENTREPRENEURSHIP CLASS The BSC was awarded the contract to teach and administer ClassE, the Coles County High School Entrepreneurship Class. The director served as the teacher and 13 students worked together to start a group business as well as their individual businesses. This class is the start of a business success network where the youth of the community have access to successful business people who will help mentor and connect them locally so they will consider starting entrepreneurial ventures in the area. This class went on 50 business tours and had another 50 speakers discuss with them all the facets of starting a new venture.

ENTREPRENEURIAL COACHING The BSC provided one-on-one free and confidential entrepreneurial coaching to 59 new and existing businesses. This coaching generated seven new business start-ups, two business expansions and assistance with the purchase of one established business. Forty-five new jobs were created and eight jobs were retained. Six loans and two grants were secured, and a total of $540,000

OTHER PUBLIC AND CONTRACTED TRAINING The BSC conducted statewide CASA training on board development and volunteer retention. A webinar was also developed and offered later in the year. Other repeat supervisory and leadership training includes the Sarah Bush Lincoln Leadership Academy with Dr. Tom Boldrey and Dr. Thomas Hawkins, Marathon Petroleum Company and EIU Capstone testing for the School of Business.

YOUTH ECLUBS, CAMP, WORKSHOPS AND IN-CLASS PROGRAMMING Seventy-five junior high students showed up to join the Effingham Junior High Entrepreneurship Club. The University of Illinois Outreach and Extension once again hosted the Clark County Youth Entrepreneurship Workshop and added an Edgar County Youth Entrepreneurship Workshop. The BSC was privileged

Not long ago, visionary leaders of Eastern Illinois University broke ground for the Renewable Energy Center. The construction of the Renewable Energy Center promised to bring many exciting opportunities to our campus and our community. In order to integrate those opportunities with our learning and research, the whole campus came together and established the Center for Clean Energy Research and Education, also known as CENCERE.

The original vision of CENCERE started with a whole-hearted, campus-wide collaboration and partnership among EIU’s Facilities Planning and Management unit, faculty of various academic disciplines, and students from across the entire campus. With the knowledge and confidence gained through this collaboration, 10 academic schools and departments within EIU worked together to develop a new graduate degree program called the

Master of Science in Sustainable Energy. As a part of this new degree program, students have the unique opportunity to conduct a job-shadowing practicum at the Renewable Energy Center and to work on other sustainability projects on campus.

CENCERE would like to express appreciation to our first major financial partner in this endeavor - the Charleston Area Charitable Foundation. Their support enabled us to acquire a laboratory scale gasifier and a gas analysis instrument. The laboratory gasifier has become the center piece of our research and learning. This impressive research tool is enabling us to experiment with various biomass resources available in Eastern’s immediate area, resources that we hope to one day utilize as alternative biomass fuels for the Renewable Energy Center. Through CENCERE’s partnership with the Charleston Area Charitable Foundation, we have

gained knowledge and confidence, and subsequently received another major grant from the National Science Foundation to enhance biomass renewable energy education at EIU and across the nation.

EIU has emerged as the leader in biomass renewable energy research and education. CENCERE is providing the leading role in forging partnerships with the community, including Charleston High School, other colleges and universities, and private companies in the region and in the state. The new CENCERE research facility will position us to involve students from high schools and community colleges, undergraduate students and graduate students in our research and learning in biomass renewable energy. Together with our partners, CENCERE is creating a better future.

EIU Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) strives to improve individual and family lives, enrich communities and support economic development through its services to a six-county area in east-central Illinois: Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Edgar, Moultrie and Shelby. CCR&R has also established partnerships to expand collaborative services and serve as a training/educational site for university and community college students. The staff in the EIU CCR&R has worked hard to sustain this work.

The referral staff assisted 357 families in their search for child care throughout the six-county service delivery area. Our Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) staff remained busy providing support to nearly 500 families who received assistance paying for child care. Our parent/provider specialist maintained

a database of 191 child care providers. Many of the local child care programs were enhanced through monetary awards distributed through the Quality Counts Grant Program in our service delivery area (Clark - three, Coles - 18, Cumberland - one, Edgar - two, Moultrie - five, and Shelby - one) and through professional development funds disbursed by CCR&R, thanks to our training coordinator.

Our agency offered 105 workshops on various early childhood topics to providers, parents and the community. Our infant toddler specialist, QRS/literacy specialist and mental health consultant, along with our training coordinator, have worked together to increase the quality of child care in the family child care homes and centers. The QRS/literacy specialist has worked in collaboration with WEIU to enhance on-site

literacy visits through the use and education of trans-media devices. In addition, our CCAP and core staff has completed several outreach activities including presentations in several EIU classrooms, presentations in area high schools, area children’s events, and other local agencies. CCR&R staff and resources were available at community outreach locations such as the Neoga Food Pantry, as well as community events. A few events attended by staff included Festival of the Young Child, Autism Resource Fair, CEFS Parent Fair and WEIU Kids Day.

The CCR&R staff is to be celebrated for their devotion to children, parents, providers and the community.

The mission of the Peace Meal Senior Nutrition Program is to provide quality meals for healthier lives. The program seeks to help senior citizens improve their nutrition, sustain their independence and enhance the quality of their lives by providing meals, fellowship and connections to other needed services. A budget of more than $2.6 million is raised from various grants and donations to provide 1,400 meals daily to more than 70 sites in 14 counties. Services include home-delivered meals, congregate meals, nutrition education, needs assessment and outreach. Sites utilize more than 1,200 volunteers each year for the provision of meals and services.

Peace Meal has been proud of the implementation of innovative programs in recent years, including soup and salad bars and restaurant programs. Healthy aging programs continue to be administered through Peace Meal, most notably Strong For Life exercise

classes featured at multiple sites. Programming in communities includes social activities such as card games, birthday and holiday celebrations, events to honor veterans and teachers, and Bingo. These events have helped draw new people to Peace Meal while still meeting the needs of our long-term clients. Daily check-in on home-delivered meal clients provides improved safety for our seniors and increased peace of mind for their caregivers. Contact with a volunteer or staff person is often the only personal contact a home-bound individual has in a day. Peace Meal staff members have remained dedicated to maintaining this type of contact in a climate that increasingly places less value on the importance of personal service. The success of this program has been found in the efforts of dedicated seniors, community members and staff!

On Sept. 30, 2013, EIU concluded its sponsorship of Peace Meal after 37

years. Peace Meal staff, seniors and volunteers extend their most heartfelt appreciation to Eastern Illinois University, the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences, and the School of Family and Consumer Sciences for support and dedication to the program since 1976. The program has enjoyed great success under the leadership of those at EIU, and all will miss the interaction with administration, faculty, staff and students.

However, there is cause for celebration as Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center became the sponsor for Peace Meal, effective Oct. 1, 2013. This new opportunity is exciting and will offer many new experiences for seniors and staff. Peace Meal will become an even greater part of the health care industry in the communities served, and we look forward to many more years of providing quality meals for healthier lives.

A FOCUS ON EXCELLENCE IN THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Join me again this year in focusing on excellence in education from the School of Business. In particular, you may be interested in our “face lifts” and the spotlights on our faculty, alumni and student learning.

BUILDING UPDATES – LUMPKIN HALL Our building underwent some changes this year. To encourage all students and faculty to live by the vision of the School of Business and to know what we are accomplishing to support that vision and mission, wood plaques were created displaying our vision statement and placed at either end of the entrance to Lumpkin Hall. Also, TV monitors with news and announcements and touch-screen building directories were installed at both entrances. To encourage more student interaction and to provide an inviting environment for students to work, the Lumpkin Hall Business Student Lounge was renovated. A flat screen video wall displaying current news feeds, current stock prices, and the performance of our two student-managed funds was installed in the Securities Analysis Center. We are grateful to our donors for their generous gifts in support of these initiatives. I invite you to return to Lumpkin Hall so that you can see the positive changes in our building.

RECOGNITIONS Excellence in the School of Business was recognized by the university in a variety of ways throughout the year. The College-to-Career program was awarded the 2012 Provost’s Award for Integrative Learning. This professional development program encourages students to consciously enhance their professional competencies as they progress through each year of college. The School of Business thanks COUNTRY Financial for its generous support of the College-to-Career Program, which was highlighted in the Spring 2013 EIU Alumni Magazine.

ALUMNI HONORS A School of Business alum was recognized by the EIU Alumni Association for his accomplishments and support of Eastern. Mr. Carl Mito (‘72) was honored with the 2012 Louis V. Hencken Alumni Service Award in recognition of his long-term and continuous service to the School of Business and the university. Another business alum, Mr. Donald Gher (’73), received an Honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from Eastern Illinois University in recognition of his dedication, his generosity and his service to others.

FACULTY HONORS In addition to recognition on campus, our faculty were recognized on a national and international level. At the AACSB International Conference and Annual Meeting, the School of Business was again recognized with a premier Beta Gamma Sigma chapter award. In addition, our chapter adviser, Mr. Mike Wilson, was recognized as the

Outstanding Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Adviser. He was selected by a committee representing all Beta Gamma Sigma chapters. Dr. Marko Grünhagen, Lumpkin Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship in the School of Business, received the 2013 Associate Editor of the Year award from the Journal of Small Business Management. Dr. Michael Dobbs, assistant professor of management, was honored with the Best Paper Award at the 23rd annual conference of the American Society for Competitiveness in Washington, D.C., for his paper titled “Porter’s Five Forces in Practice: Templates for Firm and Case Analysis.” Dr. David Fleming, assistant professor of marketing, and his co-author from the University of South Florida, received the best paper award in the Marketing Education Track at the 2013 Marketing Management Association Conference for their paper titled “Trends in Academic Research: A 15 Year Analysis of Published Research in Marketing Journals.”

STUDY ABROAD The faculty continue to take students on short-term study abroad trips, including summer trips to Maastricht, the Netherlands, with a new connection to Croatia, a summer trip to China, and a spring break trip to Panama. In addition, 10 business majors participated in extended study abroad programs in Argentina, Cyprus, Ecuador, Italy, United Kingdom and Guatemala.

INTEGRATIVE LEARNING In the School of Business, we consider integrative learning to be one of our continued strengths. Our students are provided with appropriate subject content within each course, and they are also presented with a wide range of extra-curricular and professional development opportunities that encourage them to assimilate their learning experiences within the classroom with those outside the classroom. These opportunities include attending professional conferences, participating in academic competitions, participating in study abroad trips, completing internships, and a variety of other activities. We are grateful to our donors, including the Accounting Advisory Board and the Business Advisory Board, for their generous support of these opportunities.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS The School of Business and Delta Sigma Pi paired to host our annual Etiquette Dinner. All business students and faculty are invited, and it is a very popular event. Students are able to practice their skills as they are learning how to make their way through a meal while, at the same time, building positive business relationships. This is a fun and important event for everyone! Thank you to Mr. Stan Hollen for his generous support of this event and other student professional development activities.

This year, the management faculty and students hosted the Illinois State Human Resources Games in which six Illinois universities participated. The EIU Student Chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) co-hosted the annual AITP National Collegiate Conference in St. Louis, Mo.

UNIQUE PROGRAMS The School of Business sponsors the Executive-in-Residence Program, Entrepreneurship Week and Ethics Awareness Week. New this year, as part of our Ethics Awareness Week, we recognized the newly created Bertrand P. Holley Business Ethics and Social Responsibility Booth Library Collection. The collection includes 27 books and six DVDs. The School of Business thanks the Holley family for its generous support of our ethics program.

STUDENT CONNECTIONS Our students are given the opportunity to network with alumni and other prospective employers through Accounting Day, Management Information Systems Career Connection Day, Human Resources Day, Financial Planning Day, and both the Accounting and Business Advisory Board meetings. Students also have an opportunity to develop their skills by attending conferences, including the International Business Conference, American Marketing Association annual meeting, Beta Alpha Psi

annual meeting, and the R.I.S.E. (Redefining Investment Strategy Education) Investment Forum.

This year, three MBA students completed the research option of the program, which requires an individual research project and formal presentation to the faculty. Additionally, nine graduate student papers were presented at conferences and published in the conference proceedings or in academic journals.

As we draw to the close of another very active and rewarding year for the School of Business, it is easy to see how our students have benefitted from the integrative learning experiences they are provided and are well prepared for their futures. We look forward to much continued success in the year to come.

PROGRAM ACCREDITATION This academic year, faculty members were involved with a reaccreditation and two continued accreditations, which involved the School of Family and Consumer Sciences (SFCS) and the Graduate Dietetic Internship.

Following approval of the self-study report by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) Council for Accreditation, the SFCS started the 2012 fall semester with a five-day site visit from the three-member review team. In addition to tours on campus, the review team members met and spoke to a large number of constituents and stakeholders. The outcome was positive, with the Council for Accreditation of the AAFCS granting the SFCS reaccreditation.

Additionally, the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) is the accrediting body for Dietetics. Midway through the 10-year reaccreditation, both the undergraduate and graduate dietetics programs submitted their required Program Assessment Reports, one for the undergraduate program and one for the graduate degree Dietetic Internship. The ACEND board reviewed each report separately and each of the programs was granted continued accreditation status.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT There is a demand to provide an online graduate degree for FCS high school teachers within the state who are place-bound and unable to relocate to pursue a traditional degree. Dr. Lisa Moyer, coordinator of the Master of Science in FCS, began to investigate the options. She is completing a needs assessment to assure that the program would meet the needs of its target audience and is investigating other logistics needed to start an online program. If all goes well, the online program will be ready for enrollment in 2014.

CHRISTOPHER E. TREDENNICK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Christopher E. Tredennick graduated from EIU in May 2008 with a degree in FCS/hospitality management. He was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity, Beta Gamma chapter. Chris died unexpectedly of an unknown cardiac issue on August 13, 2009. He is loved and remembered by his parents, Wendy and Ron (ex ’74 EIU alumnus), brothers Mike (’10 EIU alumnus) and Jeff (’11 WIU alumnus), and a sister, Sara (an EIU student). Chris’ love for his profession was evident in the many activities he participated in at EIU including the Club Manager’s Association of America chapter. At the time of his death, Chris was an assistant banquet and beverage manager at

the Bloomington Country Club. It is because of Chris’ passion for life and helping others that his family felt it important to establish a scholarship to commemorate the spirit of such an amazing young man. By setting up a memorial scholarship, his family ensures that his memory will live on in the program and the university that he loved. The first Christopher E. Tredennick Memorial Scholarship will be awarded in Fall 2013 during the annual SFCS Scholarships and Awards Ceremony.

THE CAFE’ Long awaited, The Cafe‘ opened for business in Klehm Hall, serving soup, specialty sandwiches and a salad bar. Food for The Café is prepared by students in the quantity foods lab and delivered to the customers’ tables. A steady flow of patrons visit The Cafe’ and enjoy the food and atmosphere. The entire process is managed by students and overseen by faculty. In a collaborative effort, student artwork is displayed in The Café,’ thus showcasing various works by EIU’s talented artists.

STUDY ABROAD The SFCS continues to support student opportunities to study abroad. With more than 13 years of taking students abroad, we have formed a strong relationship with the Apicius Culinary Institute in Florence, Italy. Several FCS students spent their spring break studying abroad in Florence. The “Food, Wine and Fashion” trip was led by FCS faculty

member Dr. Lisa Brooks. Highlights of the trip included a private tour of the Emilio Pucci mansion and museum; a day trip to the Tuscan province of Arezzo to visit the Busatti textile factory; a visit to the hilltop village of Montepulciano and a local winery; a walking tour of Renaissance Florence with an art historian to see such sights as Palazzo Vecchio, the Duomo and the Uffizi gallery; and preparing authentic Italian cuisine at the Culinary Institute of Florence. This was an experience of a lifetime for our students.

FINANCIAL LITERACY The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) and TIAA-CREF solicited proposals for CGS member institutions to participate in a best practice project to enhance financial education for graduate and undergraduate students. This project will award $40,000 to 15 institutions through a competitive process of external review. Linda Simpson, interim assistant chair and professor, served as a co-principle investigator, along with Robert Augustine, dean of the EIU Graduate School. These two leaders developed a steering committee, which comprised 17 constituents from the EIU campus and local community who provided valuable input on this project. Funding from the grant would establish the Literacy in Financial Education (LIFE) Center, a program to enhance the financial literacy skills of students enrolled at EIU. The mission of the center would

be to change students’ knowledge and behaviors related to money management by providing financial education through various tools and resources. The goal of the center is to encourage students to practice responsible financial behaviors and graduate with a lower debt level by developing strategies to reduce their discretionary spending. The center would offer presentations, webinars and peer-to-peer financial counseling and will be staffed by an executive director, a graduate assistant and student interns.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS The Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (SAFCS) started the year by participating in the Pantherpalooza to market and recruit students to the organization. Member activities included the Fall Kickoff, which was an informal gathering to allow current and prospective members to socialize, learn more about SAFCS, and register as new or returning members. Lauri DeRuiter Williams served as a guest speaker and provided an enlightening perspective on getting members motivated and how to make a difference. The members participated in the event Up Til’ Dawn, which is designed as a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Mollie Kelley, a recent FCS graduate and fundraiser for St. Jude, coordinated the event. Members adopted a family of three for the holidays and gifts were purchased and delivered to the domestic violence shelter.

Holiday cards were created and delivered to an assisted living facility (Heritage Woods) in Charleston. As a fundraiser, premixed dry ingredient cookie bags were assembled and sold for the holiday season. A donation box was set up for donations for the Illinois Coalition for Community Services and several SAFCS members brought donations to the meeting.

The Student Dietetic Association (SDA) participated in events that gave them an opportunity to enhance their dietetic knowledge while teaching others about the importance of nutrition and all while giving back to the community! Members participated in a nutrition education session for teens at Teen Reach, a local service organization. Through this event, members were able to educate teens on the importance of a healthy balanced diet. SDA members also attended the Dietetic Forum at St. Louis University were they learned about the college selection process and participated in campus-wide events, including the annual EIU Health Fair.

SDA members hosted a Zumbathon to raise money for breast cancer research. During National Nutrition Month, the SDA put together a Weight of the Nation screening for professors and students campus-wide. Members were also given the opportunity to help our graduate students in research they were completing. One research study participants assisted in was a Doggie

Bag Study. The purpose of the study was to determine if given a to-go bag before starting a meal, an individual would eat less. Although members participated in many educational events, they also found time to engage in social events in order to become acquainted with each other. Members took part in cosmic bowling night, a bake sale and put together a Thanksgiving dinner for all members. One event all SDA members were proud to be a part of was a 5K run/walk in memory of a close classmate whose life was tragically taken too soon by a drunk driver. With the help of sponsors, the event attracted 260 individuals and raised more than $3,500 in the first year of the event. Proceeds went to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD).

STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS The SFCS has many successful students who will go on and thrive in their area of practice. Here are a few student accomplishments that we are proud to showcase:

Helen Marcotte, a graduate student in FCS, was selected for an internship in New York City at Kleinfeld’s Bridal (from the TV show “Say Yes to the Dress”). Helen will complete her internship during the 2013 fall semester. She also received a Williams Travel Grant for travel to a conference where she presented.

Emily Dupuis and Casey Harms, senior dietetic students, participated in the National Conference of Undergraduate Research at the

University of Wisconsin in April. Their research, titled “Sustainability in a Foods Laboratory,” was selected via a national pool for presentation at this premier undergraduate research conference.

Jessica Ratts, a graduate student enrolled in the MS in FCS program, is completing a National Association of College and University Foodservices (NACUFS) internship at the University of Wisconsin in dining and culinary services. She was selected as one of 49 interns from a highly competitive national pool of 250 undergraduate and graduate-level students.

Meghan Leineweber, a graduate dietetic student, received a Research and Creative Activity Grant from the EIU Graduate School for nutrition education programming at Charleston High School in partnership with the Eastern Illinois Foodbank. Meghan’s travel was supported by a Williams Travel Grant. Meghan will present her research at the Society of Nutrition Education and Behavior in her hometown of Portland, Ore.

Brittany Cole Zaring, a graduate dietetic student, conducted research on the “Acceptability and Preference of an Oral Nutritional Supplement by Older Adults.” She presented her research at the AAFCS in Houston, Texas, in June, 2013.

Kayla Brandt, a graduate dietetic student, completed her thesis titled “Flavored Milk Consumption in School Systems and Its Effect on the Body.” She passed her defense with distinction.

Jamie Merritt, a graduate dietetic student, completed her thesis titled “Dietary Iron Intake and Knowledge of Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia among Female Marathon Runners.” She passed her defense with distinction.

Megan Jackson, a graduate student in the MA in Gerontology program and an FCS consumer studies alumna (BS ‘12), was elected to serve a three-year term as the National Student Representative of the Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society Executive Board.

FACULTY RECOGNITION Faculty members take pride in their work and it shows. Following are some examples of faculty recognitions: Dr. Linda Simpson, FCS professor, and Lisa Dallas, assistant to the dean for academic technology, presented at the 2013 University of Illinois Faculty Summer Institute on the use of innovative technology in research. This was the fourth year that the two presented at the institute.

Dr. Lisa Brooks and Dr. Linda Simpson presented a webinar titled

“Preparing Our Students for the Real World: Are Colleges Doing Enough?” The presenters conducted research to identify transferable skills that students acquire as a result of experiential learning via internships, EIU study abroad programs, and the Disney College program.

Several FCS faculty members were honored in the spring by the Office of Disability Services for exemplary willingness to make accommodations and support the needs of students with disabilities. FCS had the largest representation of faculty and students present. Honored faculty included Misty Baker, Deborah Reifsteck, Christina Yousaf, Dr. Axton Betz-Hamilton, Dr. Crystal Duncan-Lane and Dr. Kathleen O’Rourke. Dr. Katie Shaw and Helen Marcotte, FCS graduate student, presented a teaching workshop, “If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Them: Using Smartphones in the Retail Classroom”, at the American Collegiate Retailing Association. The conference was held in Nashville, Tenn.

Dr. Carla Honselman presented “High Impact Integrative Learning in Undergraduate Dietetics Curriculum,” a poster presentation, at The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 2012 Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo, October 2012, in Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Crystal Duncan-Lane and Dr. Katie Shaw were chosen, as senators, to represent the state of Illinois at all AAFCS conferences.

Dr. Carla Honselman received an EIU Faculty Partnership Development Grant to fund the 2013 Obesity Conference held at EIU’s Grand Ballroom. The conference involved faculty and students from FCS-dietetics, kinesiology and sports studies, and health studies.

Dr. Lisa Moyer received an Illinois Council on Family Relations (ILCFR) Faculty Mentor Award.

FACULTY LEADERSHIP Dr. Kathleen O’Rourke participated in the AAFCS Alliance meeting with approximately 30 other FCS individuals from across the country. The charge of this group of leaders is to discuss how to move the FCS Alliance to the next level. Outcomes of the summit meeting will be pivotal in determining the most effective way to compete in today’s race for relevance. Dr. O’Rourke attended the meeting in Washington, D.C., in June 2013.

Dr. Carla Honselman participated in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 2013 Public Policy Workshop in Washington, D.C., as a speaker on the topic of “Nutrition and Agriculture.” This annual gathering

serves to inform registered dietitians on current legislative issues prior to meeting with legislators.

Dr. Carla Honselman serves as an IDA State Regulatory Specialist, having served in this capacity since her appointment in 2010. Dr. Honselman monitors state legislative and regulatory issues relating to health and nutrition and is a member of the IDA Legislative Committee.

Dr. Karla Kennedy-Hagan was elected to the 2013-2014 executive board of the Council of Administrators of FCS where she serves as the treasurer-elect. In addition, she serves on two committees: the chair of the audit committee and a member of the budget committee.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS The School of Technology received the 2013 International Education Council’s Award for Excellence in Global Competitiveness and International Student Recruiting. The funds from the award will be used to increase global marketing initiatives in the school.

The Organizational and Professional Development (OPD) program added three new courses to its curriculum: OPD 3020, Principles of Organizational and Professional Development; OPD 4430, Research in Organizations; and OPD 4864, Strength-based Development. Additionally, an articulation agreement was reached with Harper College’s Business Administration AAS degree program. Finally, the OPD embarked on new marketing initiatives in an effort to spread the word about the program to prospective students.

CENTER FOR CLEAN ENERGY RESEARCH AND EDUCATION (CENCERE) GROUND BREAKING Eastern broke ground on a research facility to house the Center for Clean Energy Research and Education (CENCERE) on March 1, 2013. The new building will include space for research and teaching, including a biomass storage and processing area, a room for our laboratory-

scale gasifier, and an analytical lab. The facility will also house an “idea incubator” for use by local individuals as they develop concepts in clean energy. We hope the idea incubator will contribute to the local economy by initiating or attracting companies to develop technology in collaboration with Eastern.

FIRST DUAL-DEGREE PROGRAM PROPOSAL On Jan. 15, 2013, the Council on Graduate Studies (CGS) at EIU approved EIU’s first ever dual-degree program proposal between the Master of Science in Technology and Master of Science in Sustainable Energy programs. The dual-degree program provides students opportunities to pursue both degrees with 12 credit hours of overlapping courses applied toward both degrees.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PROGRAM On June 18, 2012, EIU’s Board of Trustees approved the Master of Science in Sustainable Energy program. Subsequent approval for the new MS in Sustainable Energy program was received from the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) on Dec. 4, 2012. The first student admitted to the program was Sunil Thapa, an international student from Nepal.

Dr. Luke J. Steinke, associate professor and OPD program coordinator, was recognized as a 2012 Epsilon Pi Tau-Paul T. Hiser Exemplary Publication Award winner.

STUDENT CELEBRATION Sixty-five international students, faculty and classmates were hosted for a free holiday meal at Lincoln Garden Restaurant in Charleston. Dr. Wafeek Wahby, professor of construction technology, arranged the feast with the owner of Lincoln Garden. Administrators and faculty from Eastern shared stories of their own holiday traditions, and everyone enjoyed the event.

SYMPOSIUM ON ANCIENT GREECE - LECTURES A Futuristic Look Through Ancient Lenses: A Symposium on Ancient Greece was presented at EIU from Oct. 3-Nov. 7, 2012. The series of lectures was sponsored by the School of Technology, Booth Library and the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences. Dr. Wafeek Wahby co-coordinated the series. The keynote presentation was given by Loanna Efthymiadou, consul general of Greece in Chicago. Dr. Thomas Hawkins, associate professor in the School of Technology, and several undergraduate and graduate students from the School of Technology presented “The Myth of Epimetheus and Prometheus: Time, Techne and the Invention of the Human.”

FACULTY RECOGNITION Dr. Julie Chadd and Dr. Lance Hogan were recipients of Achievement and Contribution Awards in the Teaching category. The award recognized their outstanding contributions to the university.

A number of School of Technology faculty received Redden Grants to support their research and teaching initiatives, including Dr. Rendong Bai, Mr. Bruce Barnard, Dr. Jerry Cloward, Ms. Bev Cruse, Mr. Gabriel Grant, Dr. Thomas Hawkins, Dr. Lance Hogan, Mr. Aaron Melton, Dr. David Melton and Dr. Luke Steinke.

STUDENT ORGANIZATION ACCOMPLISHMENTS The Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) student organization held a Pumpkin Smash and Carving Competition on Oct. 31 to raise funds to attend their national convention. In November, six students traveled to Nashville, Tenn., with their faculty advisers for the convention.

Two undergraduate students, Jason Ligotino and David Finnegan, represented the School of Technology during EIU’s Legacy Celebration. Ligotino presented his research, “Static Testing a New Knot for Industrial Access Applications,” and Finnegan presented his book, “The Apple II,” which was published in 2012.

RECOGNITION OF ALUMNI AND FRIENDS At the 2013 Spring Scholarship and Achievement ceremony, Dr. Jonathan

F. Gosse received the School of Technology’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Gosse is the editor-in-chief for American Publishers Inc. in Homewood, Ill. He received his bachelor of science degree from the School of Technology at EIU in 1974.

Dr. Gosse then received his master of science degree in education from Northern Illinois University and his doctor of education degree from Washington State University. His career has included instruction of graphic communications, administration of academic programs, and the publication of technical instructional material. He served in faculty and administrative positions at Eastern Washington University and the Rochester Institute of Technology. In 1994, he founded American Tech Publishers and assumed the position of editor-in-chief in 1999. Dr. Gosse has written several books and has conducted research on the effectiveness of instructor-based versus computer-based training methods. In Spring 2010, he presented the “Charge to the Class” during the commencement ceremony at EIU. Dr. Gosse also served six years as the chair of the School of Technology Advisory Committee.

A naming ceremony was held Oct. 12, 2012, to honor Mr. Robert DeBolt for his contribution to the School of Technology’s Future Fund. Klehm Hall 1309, which houses the Scanning Electron Microscope Laboratory, was named in his honor.

Mr. DeBolt (‘62) is a Peoria native and earned a bachelor’s in technology education from EIU. He earned a master’s degree from San Diego State University in 1969. Mr. DeBolt was on the 1960 EIU football team and was a member of the EIU men’s wrestling team from 1959–1960. His late wife, Mari Lynn, was also an EIU graduate. Mr. DeBolt taught technology education in the Chicago area before attending law school. Upon graduation, he practiced estate law in the Chicago area for many years before retiring to Apollo Beach, Fla., where he now resides. He attributes much of his success to his experience at EIU.

Also on Oct. 12, 2012, a ceremony took place to honor Mr. Mark R. Rogstad (‘79 and ‘81), who passed away in 2008. A classroom in Klehm Hall, Room 3104, was named in his honor. Mr. Rogstad graduated from Belvidere High School and earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree at EIU in technology education. He had been an instructor at the University of Montana Western in Dillon, Montana. He was a member of the Technical Education Association of Montana. Mr. Rogstad made a bequest to the EIU Foundation for the purpose of supporting the EIU School of Technology Future Fund.

SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS The Dallas and Nina Minniear Scholarship for a student majoring in career and technical education was

established this year. Dallas attended Eastern Illinois University from 1959-1962, was awarded a degree in business education, and was named to Pi Omega Pi, the national business honor society. He was selected to participate in a nationwide rating of colleges and accounting students.

CENCERE NEWLY FUNDED RESEARCH A number of research grants were garnered by School of Technology faculty, several in collaboration and coordination with other faculty at EIU. The Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, funded “Evaluate Feasibility of Sustainable and Economical Utilization of Biomass Gasification Byproducts.” The principal investigator for this project is Dr. Peter Ping Liu, and the project leader is Dr. Mori Toosi. EIU team members include Drs. Jonathan Blitz, Tom Canam, Jerry Cloward, Karen Gaines, Douglas Klarup, Peter Ping Liu and David Melton. Collaborators at ISTC are Mr. Vinod Patel and Dr. B.K. Sharma.

The ISTC also funded “Exploratory Study on Gasification of Pelletized Grassy Biomass.” The principal investigator is Dr. Peter Ping Liu, and the project manager is Dr. Jerry Cloward. EIU team members are Drs. Rendong Bai, Jonathan Blitz, Tom Canam, Jerry Cloward, Karen Gaines, Douglas Klarup, Peter Ping Liu and David Melton. Collaborators at ISTC

A New Leaf Energy sponsored “Biomass Pelletization,” whose principal investigator is Dr. Peter Ping Liu, with project leader Dr. Isaac Slaven. Other EIU team members are Drs. Jerry Cloward, Peter Ping Liu and David Melton.

The National Science Foundation sponsored “Enhancing Undergraduate Education Through Student-Led Research in Biomass Renewable Energy.” The principal investigator for this project is Dr. Peter Ping Liu, and the project evaluator is Dr. Rose Gong. EIU team members are Drs. Rendong Bai, Jerry Cloward, Peter Ping Liu, David Melton and Isaac Slaven.

STUDENT AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS During the Scholarship and Recognition in International Studies ceremony sponsored by the Office of International Students and Scholars and Study Abroad, Phani Krishna Hari (Fall 2012) and Sunny Kesireddy (Spring 2013), both technology students, received the Mrs. Pratima Niranjah Shah Scholarship. Also at the ceremony, Wei Wang, graduate technology student, was named to the “Class of 2013 Distinguished International Students.”

STUDENT RESEARCH Wei Wang and Chengdong Hu, Chinese international students at EIU, are engaged with biomass research that could change the way

energy is produced both here and abroad. Wang, a graduate student in technology, is currently working with Dr. Peter Ping Liu and Dr. Jerry Cloward to compare the energy conversion efficiency from burning different biomass. Hu, a senior applied engineering and technology student, is working on a similar research project with Dr. Cloward which tests the heat value of materials to create efficient energy pellets.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps mission is to train and commission lieutenants for the Army of tomorrow. Army ROTC is a challenging, and exciting program of instruction that focuses on leadership development, not only in theory, but in practice. ROTC students learn practical leadership through actual experience and are campus and community leaders at many different levels. Army ROTC provides students the opportunity to learn about themselves and their potential, and challenges them to achieve greater heights of personal and professional leadership.

ARMY TRAINING The cadets in the ROTC battalion conducted intense and challenging training throughout the year as they worked towards the eventual goal of earning a commission as an officer in the US Army. Training is conducted in the classroom, during weekly labs, and during other separately planned events.

On campus and in the local surrounding area, the battalion conducted training on basic military skills, such as combat water survival, land navigation, and first aid. We built upon those basic individual tasks and conducted more complex collective training such as small unit movement and tactics. Each training event was

planned, prepared, and executed by the cadets themselves as part of the overall learning experience.

Off campus, the battalion conducted numerous events using the resources of different military installations. The fall Field Training Exercise (FTX) was conducted from September 13-16, 2012, at the Illinois National Guard Training Area at Camp Marseilles, IL. The cadets spent the weekend conducting training such as land navigation, rifle marksmanship, and executing the confidence course, all while operating with limited sleep and under high stress. The conditions of the exercise helped build a strong foundation for future development and forged a sense of camaraderie and esprit de corps amongst the cadets.

The ROTC battalion fielded two Ranger Challenge teams this past year and competed against the other schools in the region at the Ranger Challenge Competition at Camp Marseilles, IL. This competition is the varsity sport of ROTC, where teams compete against the clock in events such as rifle marksmanship, physical fitness, one-rope bridge building, grenade throw, land navigation, and culminating in a 12-mile road march. The cadets performed admirably and scored first place in one of the event categories.

The fast tempo of training continued throughout the spring semester and culminated during the spring FTX from April 4-7, 2012 at Camp Atterbury, IN. The training exercise was conducted with cadets from Illinois State and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and challenged all in their tactical skills. The highlight of this year’s combined training was the addition of a 28-hour continuous tactical event under arduous field conditions. During this event, the cadets were forced to display resilience and exercise their critical thinking skills in order to successfully react to the various stimuli presented. The design and organization of the training was something new to Cadet Command, and the Commanding General, MG Jefforey Smith, was present to observe the changes first hand.

LEADERSHIP CHANGES The Department of Military Science bid a fond farewell to LTC Stephen Knotts in the summer of 2012 upon his retirement from active duty following 22 years of distinguished service. In a change of command

ceremony, LTC Knotts turned over control of the unit to LTC Eric Savickas as the new chair of the program. The department also saw a change in its Senior Military Instructor, with the departure of SFC Anthony Hoh and arrival of MSG Michael Gately.

INTEGRATIVE LEARNING AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT Selfless Service is one of the seven Army Values and it has clearly been represented in the work of the battalion for the university and local community. Throughout the year the cadets have planned and participated in events designed to provide support or share the lessons of leadership and team building. We conducted leadership and team building seminars for Boys State, Girls State, the EIU Baseball Team, the School of Technology, and the Coles County Probation Officer. The cadets also supported numerous philanthropic and volunteer organizations throughout the year. We planned a Red Cross blood drive, supported the Run for the Fallen memorial, handed out poppy flowers for Veteran’s Day,

and placed flags next to veteran’s graves for Memorial Day.

NOTABLE EVENTS April 2013 marked the 32nd time the ROTC battalion hosted its annual military ball. The ball was a celebration of the accomplishments of the battalion throughout the year while sharing good company and good food. This year we were privileged to have Coach Dino Babers, the EIU Head Football Coach, as our honored guest and speaker. Coach Baber provided an excellent message for the cadets and they thoroughly enjoyed sharing the evening with him.

The program hosted a retirement ceremony in May 2013 for COL Robert Sinkler ’83, in celebration of 30 years of active service in the US Army. The ceremony was officiated by the Commander of the US Army Corps of Engineers, LTG Thomas Bostick, and attended by numerous state and local dignitaries, including University President William Perry.

CADET EXCELLENCE This year was no exception in the ability of the battalion to produce top quality cadets. In the summer of 2012 at the US Army Leadership and Development Assessment Course (LDAC) at Fort Lewis, WA, EIU cadets exceeded the standard in many categories. Three cadets achieved an overall ‘Excellence’ rating and four cadets earned the coveted ‘Recondo’ badge. In May 2013 the battalion commissioned twelve outstanding new lieutenants who will undoubtedly make a huge impact on the Army. In that class of twelve, one was ranked in the top one percent of all cadets nationally; one in the top ten percent; and two in the top fifteen percent. The battalion freshman, sophomore, and junior classes are also filled with cadets who have earned awards for academic achievement, physical fitness excellence, and leadership accomplishment. The battalion is poised to continue generating officers ready to lead the Nation’s Soldiers.

Thank you! The Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences extends its thanks for the generous support from our alumni, friends, staff and faculty. Together, you are making a difference in the lives of the students we serve in our classrooms, as well as our friends and neighbors whom we serve through our college outreach programs within the surrounding community.

The gifts we receive come in a variety of forms, each one unique and equally important to the mission of our college. State Farm recently donated a van to support the delivery of warm meals through Peace Meal, and Mr. Robert DeBolt (’62) gave in support of our School of Technology, establishing a scholarship fund and helping to endow our School of Technology Future Fund. The estate

of Mr. Mark Rogstad (’79, ’81), who passed away in 2008, made a gift in support of the School of Technology Future Fund, and the Charleston Area Charitable Foundation gave a grant for the building of a research center under the leadership of our recently established Center for Clean Energy Research and Education. We are also thankful for the many annual gifts received from alumni, as well as the continued support of faculty and staff during our annual campus employee appeal.
