Dear Friends:

Thank you for your commitment to The Hesselbein Institute—what we accomplished together in 2013 impacted emerging, existing, and veteran leaders around the globe. We broadened support for values-based leadership, sharing our message with partners in the public, private and social sectors.

These are turbulent times for our country, countries around the world, yet I remain optimistic because what I hear from the young leaders I encounter.

I recall a package full of handwritten thank you notes from students participating in the Military Child Education Coalition Hesselbein Leadership Program. “Words cannot begin to describe the gratitude I feel for the incredible influence you have had on myself and my peers,” wrote one young student. Or take, for example, the written commitments from the Hesselbein Global Academy Class of 2013. “I commit to start an open dialogue about suicide awareness and prevention,” one Academy student wrote. Another committed to “take action when I get

back to my community in Southern Africa by registering my non profit social enterprise and start mobilizing relevant people, networks and resources.”

It is not just our young leaders who are interested in serving—one Hesselbein Academy mentor committed “to continue to pro bono coach the Hesselbein Fellows and recruit other coaches to support this work.” After one leadership luncheon we held in New York city, a guest responded immediately afterward, “The luncheon was wonderful and it provided such an interesting multiple generational conversation with different levels of leaders. Thank you for the opportunity.”

Through our unique combination of management theory, partnerships, civic engagement, diverse viewpoints and focus on mission, innovation, diversity and results, we can achieve our goals. May we share with you, our 2013 story?

Dear Friends,

“Proud to be an America.” These five words describe my experience in Washington, D.C., November 20, 2013. The President and First Lady hosted a dinner at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Presidential Medal of Freedom as established by President Kennedy. As a 1998 recipient of this Medal, I was one of the dinner guests.

We entered the Smithsonian right behind Aretha Franklin and just before civil rights, immigrant workers and women’s advocate Delores Huerta, and Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell, who let me know that “height is overrated.” (He is very tall, I struggle to make five feet.)

The atmosphere was similar to a beautiful family reunion. Past Medal of Freedom recipients mingled with newly honored awardees. Each guest stood between President and Mrs. Obama and Former President Bill and Hillary Clinton for a photograph. Arturo Sandoval sang jazz with a military orchestra.

Frequently, I quote the great Duke Ellington, who often described a remarkable artist or an extraordinary work “beyond category”; so it was my great pleasure to learn that the National Museum of American History has in its collection the Medal of Freedom awarded to Duke Ellington. The medal is said to hold many layers of meanings for Ellington, whose father worked as a butler and occasionally “buttled” at the White House. According to one article, for Ellington to be recognized so highly in a place where his father once had to enter through the back door is a poignant reminder of where our country has been and where it continues to progress.

I am indebted to my traveling companion and Institute board member Charlie O’Connor, who escorted me to the dinner. There was beautiful openness and a sense of family that night that will carry me into the New Year.

To Serve Is To Live,

A SPECIAL REMEMBRANCE FROM FRANCES
