Welcome to the 2013 Illinois Water Polo All State and Hall of Fame Awards Banquet. It’s been a great season and tonight is our opportunity to honor the athletes, coaches and Hall of Fame inductees as they take their place in history as being the best of the best. Congratulations on a tremendous season to all our award winners as we prepare recognize them this evening.

This year, IHSA Water polo had another increase in size with 79 boys’ teams and 75 girls’ teams participating in the sectional and state championship tournaments. To show you how we have grown, in the first year of the statewide series, we had 59 boys’ teams and 46 girls’ teams in 2002. Now in our eleventh season, we have increased the boys’ teams by 25% and the girls’ teams by 39%!! The growth has been steady with downstate growth still to come. With new schools and new pools being built each year along with the efforts of your Illinois Water Polo and Midwest Water Polo boards, we are still tapping in to the potential our area has with nowhere to move but up. It’s a great feeling to have and true indication of the dedication and efforts that our athletes and coaches give each year.

At this time, I would like to take a moment to thank the following individuals for their efforts on Illinois Water Polo in putting all the details of this event together along with all the other things they do to keep Water Polo moving forward in Illinois. A very special thank you to Cindy and Barry Jones for compiling the Banquet Book and the Slide Presentation for our event tonight!! Special thanks to our officers, Perry Korbakis (Vice-President), Carol Macola (Secretary), Mark Menis (Treasurer). Committee representatives are, Tim Caldwell (Communications), Eddie Prystalski (Fundraising), Andy Barry, Bill Walztoni, Jeff Wimer, Pat Bauer, and Rich Norman (Hall of Fame), Garrin Kapecki (Masters and Scholarship), Noah Himmel (Player Recognition), Perry Korbakis (Referees), and Sally Stelnicki (Banquet). Our Liaisons are Heriberto “Beto” Garcia and Santiago Rosario (Chicago Park District Liaisons), Tim Daniel (USWP Liaison), Barry Jones and Rick Shapiro (College Programs). Running our leagues are Rob Lindgren (Summer League) and Eddie Prystalski (Fall & Winter Leagues).

Enjoy the event this evening and make sure to check out our web site for future events and activities with Illinois Water Polo at www.illinoiswaterpolo.net.

Rick Marsh,

Chairman, Illinois Water Polo

Hall OF FaME BIOGRAPHY

andy McwhirterIntroduced by Jeff PlackettIt is my pleasure to introduce Naperville North girls water polo coach Andy McWhirter into the Illinois Hall of Fame.

Andy’s Credentials; head girls Water polo coach Naperville North High School 1994 – Present

head boys Water polo coach Naperville North High School 1994 – 2001

head age group swim and Water polo coach White Water Aquatics 2004 – 2012

science teacher - Naperville North High School 1988 – Present

I know that much of the credit for developing water polo in the west suburban area goes to guys like Mark Menis and Tom Musch, but I feel that Andy is often over-looked for his contributions. Andy has instrumental in the success of all Naperville high school programs thru his work with the Naperville Summer Subdivision Water Polo League. I would argue with anyone that it is the top “feeder program” in the area.

As the head coach at Naperville North for 18 years, he has seen the high school programs grow from struggling clubs to well respected high school programs. The key to this success was an idea that Andy started the ball rolling on in 1997. As a manager at Cress Creek Country Club in Naperville, he and I worked together to teach a handful of kids the basics of water polo on a Monday night after the club had closed to members. When word spread to a neighboring pool where another of his athletes was the head lifeguard, they too taught the game to a few kids, scheduled a contest, and next thing we knew, we had a small, informal four team league. Tom M. coached kids at Waubonsie and thru the Naper Park District, Mark M. took on a team where his family was members, and Andy ultimately decided to coordinate a first-ever city championship tournament. We had four teams and about sixty kids; it was truly a “grass roots” effort.

Since then, under his guidance as “League Commissioner,” the league has grown to 13 pools, well over 400 kids, and now boasts a u11 coed division, u14 girls division, and u14 boys division.

As a coach, Andy has continued to work with the Naperville North girls program he founded, despite his own children playing at another school, leading the team to a state trophy a few years ago. However, while some other area schools may had had more success the last couple years, I would be the first to attest that Andy’s work has had a direct affect on my own program. Many of my best players grew up playing in the league that he helped create and continues to coordinate.

None of the Naperville area schools would be the programs they are today without the tireless efforts of Andy McWhirter. I believe that as the sport’s popularity continues to grow in the suburban area, it is an ideal time to recognize another person who was instrumental in this process.

It is without hesitation that we welcome Andy McWhirter into the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame.

Isaac MarshallIntroduced by Carlos Ceja Isaac (Ike) Marshall attended Crane and Tilden High School. He was a devout and talented swimmer and began swimming at a very young age. His nickname in high school was “FISH” as a reference to how well he maneuvered through the water. Half way through his sophomore year on the team he was promoted to Team Co-Captain.

Upon graduating high school he attended Bemidji State University in Minnesota where he participated in track.

His swim coaching career started at Foreman. He then ended up coaching at Phillips, Whitney Young (where he was the first when it opened) & Lane Tech. He was later promoted to the office of “Aquatics Coordinator” for Chicago Public Schools.

He was turned onto water polo when his daughter Kellen attended Morgan Park and played during Spring 1998 & 1999. He then organized the first Chicago Public Schools water polo tournament in 1999.

He was later approached by Rick Marsh and members of Illinois Water Polo to see if he could get some more CPS schools to participate so that the IHSA could recognize water polo as a sport. He basically told him they will have the teams.

In 2001, just before the City Relay Championships, he spoke to the CPS coaches at the coach’s meeting and told us “You will have a water polo program. I am not asking you, I am telling you. I will get you equipment, balls, goals, caps.” If you didn’t know Ike, his voice was deep, it carried very well and when he spoke to a crowd, he made it sound like his word was the law.

With a deadline approaching fast and all Rick knew was that Ike was going to handle it. He was waiting to hear back from either Ike or IHSA. It wasn’t until after the deadline that the call came in from IHSA congratulating him on getting water polo recognized. In the spring of 2002 Chicago Public Schools had entered a total of 20 teams into the IHSA Sectional Tournament. It was just enough to put water polo on the IHSA map.

After putting in a few more years to make sure everything stayed in place, he eventually retired from the Chicago Public School system. Ike passed away on January 25th, 2009 at the age of 63.

It is an honor and privilege to welcome Isaac Marshall into the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame.

STEVE bOrOwSKISteve Borowski started playing water polo at the age of 6 at Blackhawk Park in Chicago where he was coached by Ed Mitchell and Ken Wollin and played there until graduating from Weber High School in 1965.

Steve led the Blackhawk Park water polo team to the Chicago Park District 16 and Younger Championship. He also led Weber High School to the Catholic League Championship in the first year water polo was played in Illinois high schools.

Steve was named Second Team High School All-American, twice, and Second Team College All-American, twice. In those selections, he was the only player selected who was not from the State of California.

Steve attended Indiana University on a full swimming scholarship where he helped Indiana win 2 NCAA Championships, and was the butterflier on the medley relay team that set an American record. He also played water polo on a team that was undefeated in Big Ten play.

At the age of 15, he was invited to play for the Illinois Athletic Club where he was coached by Sam Greller and mentored by his idol Bill Kooistra.

At age 16, he went to the 1964 Olympic trials with Illinois Athletic Club. Steve also qualified for the swimming trials; however, they were at the same time as the water polo trials.

In 1968, his nose was broken while playing in the National AAU Championships in St. Louis, and thus missed both the swimming and water polo Olympic Trials.

In 1970, he returned to Indiana University as a graduate student and was a player/coach on a water polo team that was undefeated in 2 years of Big Ten play.

He wore cap #7 in every game he ever played.

He also contributed to water polo as a Big Ten referee.

It is a privilege to welcome Steve Borowski into the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame.steve is 3rd from left.

Hall OF FaME BIOGRAPHY

george HornIntroduce by Suzi HornJust like many of the Chicago South Side water polo players, George Horn’s journey began at a YMCA pool and a swim team coached by none other than, Dave Perry. It was from there that he followed many of his team mates and their older siblings to the Chicago Park District Water Polo program and coach Scott White. Being a Southsider, it was only natural that Brother Rice HS would be the next stop.

While at Bro. Rice he not only played water polo, but swam as well. Sophomore year he broke the Catholic League Frosh/Soph 100 butterfly record and swam the Fly leg on the Medley Relay at the 1982 IHSA State Meet. However, injuries incurred while playing water polo prevented him from finishing out the Junior and senior swim seasons. Like many others, swim season was just the way to stay in condition for Water Polo.

at brother rice:

• Played on 4 undefeated Chicago Catholic League championship teams.

• Was a member of 4 Illinois State Water Polo Championship teams and was a starting player on 3 of the title runs. During that period (1981-1984) Brother Rice only lost 1 Varsity game (in 1983 to OPRF).

• 3- time Illinois All State player, twice First Team.

• 2-time Illinois Water Polo player of the year, 1983 and 1984.

• 2 time HS All American. 1984 voted First Team HS All American

• Competed in half a dozen National AAU JO tournaments with Chicagoland polo club and coaches Jim Lock/Moose Mulcrone. As U15s the club finished in 3rd place, surprising numerous California teams along the way. First team AAU All- American U15 and U18.

• 1 of 2 USA water polo players selected to represent the sport on an AAU sponsored athlete exchange to Germany.

• Colorado Olympic Development camp selection. Competed against Puerto Rico and Mexico.

• 4 year starting Center at Loyola University. Played in 2 NCAA Championship tournaments, 4 US Indoor and Outdoor Nationals. Was on a team that finished 7th at the NCAA’s in 1984 and 1985. Started in the NCAA tournament as a freshmen and a sophomore.

• As a side note: At the 1985 NCAA Water Polo Championship Tournament, the Loyola University starting lineup featured 6 Brother Rice graduates.

after college:

• West Suburban Water Polo Club coach since 2005

• Volunteer Assistant coach at Naperville North HS since 2005. Assisted in coaching the 2007 NNHS boys’ team to an IHSA State tournament 2nd place finish. Now assisting 2013 HOF inductee Andy McWhirter in coaching the Naperville North girls team.

George met his wife Suzi (a former varsity LTHS and Chicagoland Polo Club player) through water polo. Have 4 children Geoff, Katie, Alli, and Patrick and have the pleasure of currently coaching my older children at Naperville North HS and West Suburban Water Polo Club.

It is an honor and a pleasure that we welcome George Horn into the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame.

Sarah abbott, Mother Mcauley - Sarah did not start playing water polo until she was a freshman. After playing a field position for one year, she was moved up to be the varsity goalie and has remained in that position for the last three years. It is no coincidence that her team has been in the state tournament for those three years. Since starting as a goalie, she has been named to the All-Conference and All-Sectional teams. This year, she is a member of the All-State first team. She was the most valuable player on her team last year and a team captain this year. Sarah has become one amazing and outstanding goalie in the past three years. This fall, she will playing water polo at Siena College.

Matt bresnahan, Fenwick - Matt has been playing water polo since grade school with Windy City Water Polo. He has participated locally and nationally as part of the ODP program. Matt was a four year varsity player at Fenwick and two year starter. He made All-Conference, All-Sectional, and All-State team during his senior year. Also, during his senior year, he emerged as a major scoring threat tallying 95 goals and helped carry Fenwick to its twentieth state championship. He will be heading to Bucknell to participate on their water polo team this fall.

Taylor bridgman, Naperville North - Taylor has played water polo for several years. She started playing age group with her local subdivision pool and has dedicated herself to becoming a standout varsity player for Naperville North for all four years. Taylor also plays for West Sub and has traveled to JO’s in California. Taylor is a quiet leader who leads by example in the water and was selected by her teammates as captain for the Naperville North Water Polo team this spring. Through her hard work and leadership Naperville North had one of their best seasons this year and this work was recognized by the sectional coaches as she was selected to the Neuqua Valley All-Sectional team. Taylor will play polo at Villanova this fall.

Matt Farmer, Fenwick - Matt has been playing polo since grade school with both Lyons and Windy City Water Polo. He has been very successful at the ODP camps. He has played on the international level as a member of the Youth National and Junior National teams. On these teams, Matt is the only player who is not from California. For the past four years, he has been named to the All-Conference, All-Sectional and All-State water polo teams. He has been a NISCA All American for 4 years and the Illinois Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013. Matt is a good leader and motivator for his team. He will continue to keep Illinois Water Polo on the map as he heads to UCLA.

danijela Jankovich, lincoln way Central - Danijela truly has a love for water polo and she has worked very hard to become the player she is today. She attends camps and joins club teams as close as Chicagoland but as far as California to get more water polo knowledge and experience. As part of the Youth National teams, Danijela also traveled internationally to play water polo in Hungary, New Zealand and Australia. Danijela has been a leader on her high school team for four years. She pushes her teammates to become better by words and by example. She has been our team MVP every year and this year she was voted to be a captain by her peers. She is also Illinois Player of the Year for 2013. Danijela will be representing Illinois Water Polo at Stanford this fall.
