Leave the Harley at homeand the Moto Guzzi in thegarage. This show is all

about the Japanese motorcy-cle, classic ones at that.

It depends on which groupyoure talking to, theres not auniversal standard to classic, said Ken Ballinger, member ofthe Classic Japanese Motorcy-cle Club. We go with 15 yearsor older.

That means if you own a1998 or earlier model of a BigFour bike (Honda, Kawasaki,Suzuki or Yamaha), you canenter to see how it stacks upagainst others in categories

such as historic, vintage, clas-sic, future classic, enduro, small bike, mini bike,bobber/caf and custom.

The again, you may havesomething rare to share withthe folks.

    Last year there was a 1959Yamaguchi, a rare one,Ballinger said. And a 1962Tohatsu.

For Ballinger, it all startedwith a Moped when he was 12

years old (Sears 50cc Allstate). Now hes got three Honda CL77Scramblers in the garage.

Collectors have the dis-ease, he said. I have ninemotorcycles total.

In addition to the show, where all the categories exceptBest of Show will be voted on

by peoples choice, there will bea swap meet where you cantrack down hard-to-find parts, and a Bike Corral, where any-one interested in selling theirbike (Japanese or otherwise)can give it unparalleled expo-sure.

    2: Lets play some tennis

    P

laying tennis in Auburn is agood way to stay busy

throughout the summer whether its day or night.

Youve got six courts at ARDon Dry Creek; six courts atPlacer High School, said Hill-men coach Tom Isaac, the 2012

USPTA Northern CaliforniaHigh School Coach of the Year.Youve got the racquet club, but you need to be a member.Meadow Vista has courts at thepark and by Winchester ARD.

Isaac also points out thattennis is inexpensive and easi-

er than golf. And, if you cant find any-body to hit with, theres alwaysa wall, he said.

3: Time to let it roll

The bowling lanes are a wel-coming spot for just aboutanyone.

Bowling is good for any-body, said Ilah Hawley, man-ager of Foothills Bowling Cen-

Leagues, both adult andjunior, run through sum-mer and fall. Those inter-ested in taking up thecompetitive side of thesport can give the bowlingcenter a call.

    9: Knit, sew, quilt

When it comes toknitting, quiltingand sewing, obses-

    sion isnt necessarily a bad

    thing.I have a 95-year-old

customer who still takesclasses and producesjackets and purses, youname it. Ive beenobsessed with quilting for35 years, said MarylynnMatthews, owner of How-ells Sew and Vac inAuburn.

    The Auburn region is

home to legions of dedi-cated crafters who winprizes at competitionsand in the hearts of thepeople who are gifted

with their creations. There is a lot of satis-

faction in giving some-body an item you madeyourself, Matthews said.

She said her shop catersabout 60 percent towardquilters and 40 percenttoward fans of craft andgarment sewing.

There is a trend inupcycling, in buying thrift

store items and repurpos-ing them, Matthewsexplained. I see a lot ofpeople buying glitzyclothing and turning itinto dog outfits, turning

sweaters into felted hand-bags.Technology has kept

pace with crafters needs. There are still very

simple (sewing) machinesbut the electronic andcomputerized machinesmake the jobs easier, forbeginners especially. Atfirst they look more com-plicated, but in realitytheyre easier because the

tensions are all automat-ic. The machine figures itout for you.

    ~ Anne Papineau

    10: Grab the clubs

The Auburn foothillsarea has its share oftop notch golf cours-

es and the long summerhours give you more timeto get out and complete

the back nine. There are four really

good courses in the area, thats a lot compared thenumber of people thatlive in Auburn, said Geno

Ivaldi, Director of Golf atthe Darkhorse Golf Club. They are all about a 15-minute drive apart whichmakes it convenient.

The courses stay greeneven in the summertime. How do they do it? Fertil-izer and water are thesecret, Ivaldi said.

We also aerify andspike it to get air into theground so the water can

take. Otherwise, the waterjust sits on the dry sur-face.

Take advantage of theDarkhorse Golf Clubsafter 3:30 p.m. rate ($25weekdays, $28 weekends). If your kids love to golf aNike Junior Golf Campwill be offered July 15-18,for ages 8 to 17.

    19: Join a gym

Whether starting anexercise routine iseasy or hard stick-

ing to it can be the biggerchallenge. Thats wherethe benefits of joining agym can come into play.

I would say the biggestbenefits are the cama-raderie and the accounta-bility, said Bill Dietz, gen-eral manager of theAuburn Racquet and Fit-ness Club. A lot of peoplecan work out pretty muchanywhere where you canexercise, run and walkand do pushups. Most

people only stick withthat for a short time. When you join a goodquality gym, you get folksthere staff and othermembers who hold youaccountable and help tomotivate you and keepyou going beyond just acouple months.

When looking to join agym, Dietz said peopleshould make sure a club

or facility is a good fit tomatch their goals. Somegyms may have morefamily-oriented activities, fitness classes and lessfree weights while othersare focused on bodybuilding.

I recommend foreverybody to try out aclub, Dietz said. Get aguest pass, attend a class, and meet with a trainer tofind out if its a proper fit.

    20: Pole walking

    The health benefits of

walking are many. Itsa convenient, flexible,

low-impact, life-longactivity that requires littleequipment other than acomfortable pair of shoesand a set of poles.

Poles you say? Thatsright, for those that wantto burn up to 46 percentmore calories during thatconstitutional, you maywant to garb a set ofNordic walking poles.

You are involving theupper body muscles thatdont get a workout with

regular walking, said Dr.Richard Del Balso. Half ofyour muscles are abovethe waist. Add poles andyou use 90 percent of yourmuscles when you walk.

Del Balso teachesNordic pole walking class-es through the AuburnRecreation District and atFit 1 Gym in Auburn.Poles are provided, but hedoes have them for pur-

chase afterward. And thisfall, he will incorporateusing the poles whilewalking ones dog.

Using the upper bodyhelps provide resistanceby planting and pushingoff with your shouldermuscles, he said. Andthat helps develop upperbody and legs.

So if youre consideringboot camps or other andextreme workout regi-mens, remember that

walking operates within anatural range and motionof your body so youre lesslikely to feel pain or gethurt. Plus, you cant takeyour dog to CrossFit.

    23: Vintage fun

If youre into wine, youdont have to travel farto taste award-winning

    vintages.Placer County is home

to 19 boutique winerieson the Placer CountyWine Trail. Most of the

    wineries are small, family-

run operations that bringa more laid-back andunique atmosphere, asopposed to some of themore well-known areassuch as Napa Valley andthe Sonoma area.

I think theres twothings that people aregoing to experience here

    as opposed to more well

known places like Napaand Sonoma its a littlebit more of a down toearth experience. Most ofthe wineries here are fam-ily-owned, said JocelynMaddux, marketing direc-tor for Lone Buffalo Vine-yards in Auburn. Usuallythe owner is the wine-

maker. You get a chanceto speak to the winemak-er and learn about wine.

Maddux also says thatyou will find a very differ-ent array of varietals herein the foothills, asopposed to the Napa area. Here there is more of aMediterranean-style cli-mate that helps fostermore of the Italian, Span-

ish and French varietals.Youre going to be ableto taste something thatyou have never hadbefore, she said. Discov-er something new.

    Get down, get funky,

get wet. At the Amer-ican River Music Fes-

tival, the cold water andhot musical acts all addup to one pretty coolweekend.

One of the things weare known for is bringingnew music to the area, said Matt Semonsen,

Executive Director ofAmerican River Music,Inc. All of the acts on themain stage have neverplayed this festival before.David Grisman hasnt

played around here inages.Joining David Grisman

Bluegrass Experience arePaul Thorn, Sean Hayes,Hot Buttered Rum, RayWylie Hubbard, NewMonsoon and Poor MansPoison to name but a few.

Billed as a celebrationof music and movingwater, the stage is astones throw from the

south fork of the Ameri-can river.

Its really cool, theres afabulous beach, a swim-ming hole, picnic tables,he said.

Semomsen said 130volunteers pitch in to puttogether this weekend ofmusic, camping, white-

water rafting, hiking, liveart and joinshops.

Its a take off on work-shop, which is a bad artis-tic term, he said. Cre-ative art is a lot about par-ticipation, so we call themjoinshops. Our missionis to teach, inspire andenjoy music.

Enough with the airguitar already. Itstime to put down the

Guitar Hero controllerand start fiddling with thegenuine article. What

instrument to take up?Thats entirely up to you.

Have forethought as towhat you want to do,said Larry Gosch, ownerof Encore Music inAuburn. Put the instru-ment in your hand andimagine yourself playingmusic. Then, once you do,practice.

Gosch said that guitarand ukulele are the easi-est to learn, but warnsagainst getting discour-aged when things dontcome as fast as youdhoped.

Adults put too muchvalue on the learningcurve, he said. They areused to doing things rightway.

For kids, he says oncethey make the connectionbetween ears and fingersit will get easier.
