As Chairman of the Activity Professionals Council, it is my pleasure to personally invite you to attend the 2013 Activity Professionals Conference in Columbus, Ohio. This year’s Conference promises to provide the very best in activity professional education coupled with a few unique program features that give attendees the opportunity to truly network and share best practices. In this time of reduced budgets and increased regulations, it is even more important to attend educational programs such as this Conference to gain new ides on how to do more with less.We wish to invite all activity professionals to sign up for this Conference at the Association member rate - a great savings on quality education. Even though many activity professionals may have attended a conference scheduled in October, I encourage you to break from this habit and attend the Activity Professionals Conference. The Conference relies on the Association’s reputation for providing the highest quality in educational programming, and offers new and fresh speakers that will challenge and inform both the novice and seasoned activity professional.I am confident that once you have a taste of the educational and professional benefits of the Activity Professional’s Conference, you will request this program as the “don’t miss” session for years to come. We hope to see you in February!

1. Completing the MDS 3.0, the CAAs and Developing Resident-Specific Care Plans for Activities

Sarah Kneisler, RMT/NHAActivity Directors will be given the tools to accurately code MDS sections C,

D, E and F, complete the related CAAs and develop person-centered care plans.

2. Complementary Therapies: Focus on Massage Cindy Holland, A.I.D. Training

We all instinctively rub an elbow or a knee when we bump into a table or doorframe. We “massage” the area to make it feel better. Caregivers report that after a massage, individuals are easier to position, handle and dress and display positive changes in mood and disposition, more alertness and increased muscle tone. Massage has been shown to reduce insomnia, rheumatism, diabetes, migraines, gallstones, edema, dermatitis, curvature of the spine, back pain and stress. It releases muscle tension, increases muscle mass and bone growth, relieves chronic joint and muscle pain and increases range of motion. It increases circulation by increasing the heart rate without raising blood pressure. It affects respiration by increasing the oxygen absorption by the tissue. It has been credited with improving appetite and digestion by aiding with peristalsis. It increases the elimination of water from the body and relieves constipation. Massage also provides opportunities for our inborn need for human touch. It boosts energy levels as well as mental awareness.

4. Complementary Therapies: Focus on ReflexologyCindy Holland, A.I.D. Training

Reflexology uses the body’s own healing forces by stimulating nerve endings in the feet or hands thus affecting corresponding points throughout the body. For example, to stimulate the sinuses, you would apply pressure to the toes or the ends of the fingers. Reflexology is not a foot massage, nor a medical treatment, and it is less invasive than a full body massage. And, since the feet are on the end of the body, some people are more comfortable having someone work on their feet than their back or shoulders. Reflexology is a whole person approach for dealing with a variety of ailments. Research is now investigating the effects of reflexology for individuals with cancer, chronic pain, constipation, hypertension, gout, diabetes, arthritis, and anxiety.

6. Complementary Therapies: Focus on Color Therapy

Cindy Holland, A.I.D. Training The use of color has many benefits. For example, warm colors, such as red,

yellow and orange appear closer or make a room feel smaller. Conversely, cold colors, such as blue, green or violet seem further away and make a room feel larger. Colored tape can be used to outline important areas such as the edge of steps or around doors. Contrasting colors calls attention to an area while camouflaging can be accomplished by painting the door and the wall the same color. Such camouflaging when used successfully can keep wanders from leaving. Contrasting colors is important because they enable people with declining vision to see where the wall ends and the floor begins. Problems with spatial perceptions may cause many older adults to view dark throw rugs as holes causing confusion as they may try to step over or avoid them. Other color concerns to consider include avoiding distracting patterns that are too busy, as well as monochromatic color schemes in which floor, furniture and walls are all the same color. Colors also have an impact on moods and emotions and can be used to stimulate or calm the body. Red is a stimulating, energizing color that promotes alertness, so this is a good color to use in centers of activity. Orange promotes happiness and can increase the pulse rate without raising blood pressure. Orange and yellow are good for kitchen and dining areas as they enhance sociability and stimulate the appetite. Yellow also increases mental alertness and concentration, and provides energy for the muscles. Green has a calming effect that is soothing to the nervous system. Blue is also a relaxing, restful color that reduces insomnia. Blues and greens are great to use in bedrooms. Violet is known to be a healing color. On the color wheel, the following colors directly opposite each other are known as complementary colors that balance one another: red and green, orange and blue, and yellow and violet.

General SessionThe Value of a SmileDr. Kay Potetz

Since the early 90s we’ve heard a great deal about Emotional Intelligence (E.I.) and its influence on our lives. Prior to that time self-awareness, self discipline, and our ability to handle emotions in the face of frustration were not examined in depth.

During the past two years studies have emerged that illuminate the original E.I. findings. We now have a deeper understanding of our personal world, specifically “what happens when we interact?”

Our reactions to others, and theirs to us, have a tremendous biological impact. Hormones that regulate everything from our hearts to our immune systems are produced when we connect face to face or voice to voice with someone else.

We are indeed wired to connect with others. This recent discovery reveals that our relationships have a subtle, yet powerful, lifelong impact on us. How we connect with others has unimagined significance, and the Value of a Smile assumes a radical new importance.
