Attendance •  MSHSAA & WCA policy that all athletes and

students participating in any after school events, (ie. music concerts and theatre productions) must attend every class period in which they are enrolled that day unless excused in advance by the Principal (Administrative team). That includes game day and practices. (If you miss an hour you cannot participate).

•  Possible excused absences include doctor appointments, funerals. However, we must have a note from that doctor stating they are “okay to participate.” Communication in advance is the key.

The 10 Pillars of WCA Athletics

This is what guides our program

Page 12: 2013-2014 WCA Athletics Parent Meeting

1. Honor Jesus Christ in all things….the most important

measure of success

Success = Ability x Preparation x Effort x Will Athletes – Which of these do you have control over? How you prepare, how hard you try and how mentally tough you are ways you can Honor Jesus Christ. Coaches and parents this applies to us. Our actions need to be honoring.

Page 13: 2013-2014 WCA Athletics Parent Meeting

2. Christian Character defines who we are…God Honoring

behavior, good sportsmanship, and avoiding drugs, alcohol and

tobacco are required. Sportsmanship is a must. We need to show that there is something different about us. MSHSAA REGULATED – If there are problems with the law.

MSHSAA CREDIBLE CITIZEN •  Law Enforcement: A student who commits an act for which

charges may be or have been filed by law enforcement authorities under any municipal ordinance, misdemeanor or felony statute shall not be eligible until all proceedings with the legal system have been concluded and any penalty (i.e. jail time, fine, court costs, etc.) or special condition of probation (i.e. restitution, community service, counseling, etc.) has been satisfied. If law enforcement authorities determine that charges will not be filed, eligibility will be contingent upon local school policies. Minor moving traffic offenses shall not affect eligibility, unless they involve drugs, alcohol, accidents or injuries. After a student has completed all court appearances and penalties, and has satisfied all special conditions of probation and remains under general probation only, local school authorities shall determine eligibility.

Page 15: 2013-2014 WCA Athletics Parent Meeting

MSHSAA CREDIBLE CITIZEN • 1. A student who violates a local school policy is ineligible until completion of the prescribed school penalties. • 2. The eligibility of a student who is serving detention or in-school suspension shall be determined by local school authorities. • 3. A student shall not be considered eligible while serving an out-of-school suspension. • 4. A student who is expelled or who withdraws from school because of disciplinary measures shall not be considered eligible for 365 days from the date of expulsion or withdrawal. • 5. If a student misses class(es) without being excused by the principal, the student shall not be considered eligible on that date. Further, the student cannot be certified eligible to participate on any subsequent date until the student attends a full day of classes. • 6. Each individual school has the authority to set more restrictive citizenship standards and shall have the authority and responsibility to judge its students under those standards. • 7. Each school shall diligently and completely investigate any issue that could affect student eligibility. • 8. Student Responsibility: Each student is responsible to notify the school of any and all situations (Be upfront it makes it easier)

Athletes and Alcohol •  American Athletic Institute Speaker •  A survey was done of HS parents - 82% of parents

thought that their athlete didn’t drink, 52% of the athletes said they do.

•  Study of Olympic athletes found that their performance went down 11.4% after drinking. In HS athletes that number is about 20 – 30%.

•  1 time getting drunk is equal to 14 days of lost training. •  Areas that are affected: Hydration, Reaction Time,

Metabolism, Sleep and its ILLEGAL. •  You cannot be at your best if you are making unhealthy

choices and thus you are letting your teammates down.

Page 17: 2013-2014 WCA Athletics Parent Meeting

4. WE before ME…what is best for the team always comes first

•  1 Corinthians 12: 12 •  12 Just as a body, though one, has

many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.

•  Each part is extremely important!!!

Page 20: 2013-2014 WCA Athletics Parent Meeting

5. We will run the race to WIN….competing at the highest

level is the goal •  We play to win. Competition is a mutual

request for excellence. The other team is vital.

Page 21: 2013-2014 WCA Athletics Parent Meeting

Fan Expectations Keep in mind the following: •  Coaches – No coach intentionally makes a bad decision. Trust them. They

want to win more than anyone. They have invested the most time. Choose the right time and place to discuss things with them.

•  Players – They are not perfect. They typically know when they make a mistake. Be Positive acknowledge good plays, great hustle, and acts of integrity for both teams.

•  Referees - Must deal with controversy. They are a necessary part of the game. Their position requires a level of respect. They are someone’s family as well.

•  Opponents – Respect our opposing players and coaches for the time and effort that they have put in. They are our opponent not our enemy. We need them in order to experience true competition.

•  Keep it fun. •  Our goal should be for schools to feel welcome. •  Set the standard for everyone else to follow.

Page 22: 2013-2014 WCA Athletics Parent Meeting

6. We are in this together….Athletes, coaches

and parents are all on the same page.

The Fulfilling Ride by Greg Dale – Great Book Should a disagreement occur with a coach please follow the following order: WAIT 24 Hours. 1. If possible have the player talk to the coach sometime during the school day or before practice. 2. Parent call and set up an appointment to meet with the coach. Not right after a game or a practice. Talk on the phone or in person. E-mail is the last choice. 3. Go to your level coach first, then the head coach. 4. Call to set up a conference with the AD and the coach. 5. We can work our way up from there if necessary.

7. COMMITMENTS are paramount…showing up and

honoring your word is the norm

•  Coaches should be able to rely on you •  US athletics is different we do need and

want you here everyday. Accountability – Coaches should know that you are doing your best even when they aren’t watching
