On behalf of the Vietnamese Association, Toronto Board of Directors, I would like to thank everyone who has supported the organization throughout the last year. We achieved fantastic milestones this year and could not have done it without the support of our members and community. The hard work, dedication and commitment shown by the Board Members, VAT staff and volunteers have reiterated how generous, passionate and devoted they are in providing great services, knowledge and enthusiasm. With the youngest group of Board Members formed in recent years, together we experienced many challenges and obstacles that provided us learnings to reach for higher goals and objectives in the future. There is no doubt in my mind that we will continue to change for the better to be an outlet for the community whether it be through services or events. We are excited and cannot wait for what awaits us in the upcoming year.

Established in 1972 as a fraternal organization and incorporated in 1979 as a non-profit charitable organization, VAT has the following Mission Statements:

• To provide settlement and adaptation services to immigrants and help them integrate and participate successfully in Canadian society.

• To promote mutual understanding, tolerance and racial harmony among ethno-cultural communities. • To work for the promotion and preservation of the Vietnamese heritage and culture, and for the enrichment of

• Chủ Tịch / President: Tho Pham, B.Sc., B.Tech Graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor's Degree in Sciences: Life Sciences and in 2010 with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology: Process Automation at McMaster University. Currently serving as President of the Vietnamese Association, Toronto (2012-2013), Founder/Camp Master of First Step Camp (2012) and Vice President of the Vietnamese Canadian Federation (2012-2013). Was Vice President External of the Vietnamese Association, Toronto (2011-2012), Assistant Camp Master of Len Duong Leadership Camp (2009), President of the McMaster Vietnamese Student Association (2004-2006). Current occupation: Manufacturing Engineering Technologist at Estee Lauder Cosmetics Ltd.

• Phó Chủ Tịch Nội Vụ / Vice-President Internal: Pha P. Nguyen, B.Sc. Former Settlement Counsellor at Ontario Welcome House, School social worker at Toronto District School Board. Currently Vice-President of Parkdale Intercultural Association, President of Twinkle Star Non-profit home child care. Recipient of 15-year volunteer services award in 1992, 25-yearvolunteer services award in 2002, Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism in Ontario in 2005, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Current status: Retired.

• Phó Chủ Tịch Ngoại Vụ / Vice-President External: Anthony Pham, LLB. Graduated in 2005 from Western University with a degree in Political Science, and later 2008 from the University of Windsor in Law. Anthony has been a long time volunteer with Oxfam Canada, chairing the Ontario Regional Steering Committee. Anthony is also an independent filmmaker and is the current head of the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers Toronto's screenwriter's group. Current occupation: Lawyer.

• Tổng Thư Ký / Secretary General: Khang Nguyen, B.Comm. Graduated in 2007 from Ryerson with a Bachelor of Commerce in Information Technology Management (ITM), and graduated in 2003 from Seneca College with Diploma in Business Computer Systems. Currently working at Transportaction, Leasing Services as a Business Systems Analyst. Currently serving as Board member of Vietnamese Association, Toronto. Acting Community Representative on the Asian Pacific Community Consultative Council for the Toronto Police Services. President of the United Vietnamese Student Associations, Ontario (2009-2011).Current occupation: Vehicle Maintenance Administrator/Process Analyst at TLS Fleet Management.

• Thủ Quỹ / Treasurer: Tom Tang, C.A.

A chartered accountant with a wide range of business and community work experiences. Professionally, Tom held numerous senior roles within a wide spectrum of organization, including Ernst & Young LLP, Loblaw Companies Ltd. and was recently a Senior Manager with Barrick Gold Corporation. Previous Volunteers involvement includes Board of Director and Treasurer of Ontario Museum Association, Board of Director and Volunteer Outreach for Asian Community Aids Services, Board of Director of York Community Services. Current occupation: Accountant.

• Linh Nguyen, C.A. Linh Nguyen obtained her Chartered Accountant designation in 2006 and is currently a senior manager at the Chartered Accountant firm. She is very active in community works and was Board Treasurer of the Vietnamese Association, Toronto from 2008 to 2012 when she took maternity leave. Linh Nguyen returned to VAT board in June 2013.

• Ba D. Huynh.

Mr. Ba Huynh has been volunteering for numerous community activities and a recipient of the Ontario Volunteer Service Award in 2007. Recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Presently a board member of the Vietnamese Elderly Association of Toronto. Current status: Retired.

• James Nguyen, Honours B.Sc., M.B.A. Graduated in 2000 from Schulich School of Business at York University with MBA. Professional Career: has been working at UPS Canada for last 7 years as Senior Account Manager with professional accreditations; CITT designate (certified logistics specialist) and Certified Customs Specialist (CCS). Chair of the CITT Toronto Area Council (professional logistics association). Extra-curricular Activities: Marketing Director of Kids2Kids Vision, a Canadian-based non-profit organization trying to raise awareness regarding child sex slavery in Vietnam. Former chair of the Toronto Area UPS Community Relations Committee. Volunteer experiences as mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel, serving the needy every Christmas day at Salvation Army, Mississauga Food Bank. Current occupation: Managing Director of Goals Business Solutions.

• Max Vo, B.Comm., M.B.A. A passionate volunteer with both Vietnamese and Canadian organizations in Toronto, Max helped found SOS Viet-Phi, a Canadian non-profit organization that started in 2004 to advocate for the last group of Vietnamese boat people who have been stranded in the Philippines; helped lead the lobbying efforts with the Canadian Government which resulted in a new Public Policy in 2005, allowing up to 200 stateless Vietnamese boat people to be reunited with their family in Canada. Max; Treasurer of Accommodation and Information Services (AIS) Inc. Current occupation: Asset Manager and Portfolio Manager, overseeing a $1 billion real estate portfolio at Morguard Investments in Toronto.

• Le Luong, B.A. For more than a decade, Le Luong has worked in the education industry in Administration Management, and has helped hundreds of high school students realize their full potential. Within the past few years, she has expanded her expertise to include project management, event coordination and corporate fundraising where she has successfully managed several international and national conferences for non-profit organizations and government agencies. Le has volunteered tirelessly in the community by raising funds and awareness for charities such as Sick Kids Foundation, North York Harvest Food Bank, Angel Hair for Kids in the City – Canada. She also served as an advisor for the International Charity for Ill Children of Vietnam, Marketing Chair and Facility Manager of Hoi Cho Tet 2012, and Board of Director for the Vietnamese Canadian Professional Association. Current occupation: Marketing Associate at Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.


JUNE 2013: MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL /LỄ HỘI ĐA VĂN HÓA

June 15 - VAT participated in the Mississauga Multicultural Festival to present Vietnamese culture through cultural performances. Ngày 15 tháng 6– HNV Toronto tham gia Lễ Hội Đa Văn Hóa tại Mississauga để trình bày văn hóa Viêt Nam với màn múa và nhạc cổ truyền.

AUGUST 2013 - FIRST STEP CAMP / TRẠI HÈ BƯỚC ĐẦU TIÊN

August 23/25 - VAT organized the second leadership camp for high school students to promote the development of life goals, leadership skills and long-lasting friendships. This was an initiative by Len Duong Camp alumni. Ngày 23/25 tháng 8 - HNV Toronto đã tổ chức Trại Hè Bước Đầu Tiên lần thứ nhì cho các sinh viên trung học để thúc đẩy sự phát triển của mục tiêu cuộc sống, kỹ năng lãnh đạo và tình bạn lâu dài. Chương trình này do các cựu thành viên của Trại Hè Lên Đường thành lập.

August 3 - Vietnamese Association, Toronto (VAT) and the Elderly Vietnamese Association, Toronto (EVAT) jointly organized the community summer picnic. The event consisted of Vietnamese foods, BBQ, children games, and outdoor activities for seniors such as Tai Chi, Yoga, and Qi Cong. Ngày 3 tháng 8 - HNV Toronto và Hội Cao Niên VN Toronto cùng tổ chức buổi Picnic Cộng Đồng. Buổi picnic gồm có thức ăn Việt Nam, BBQ, trò chơi thiếu nhi, và những hoạt đồng ngoài trời cho quý vị cao niên như tập tai chi, yoga, và khí công.

November 16 - VAT staff and volunteers attend CMC’s annual potluck event to share Vietnamese food and show Vietnamese costumes Ngày 16 tháng 11- HNV Toronto tham dự buổi tiệc đa văn hóa do CMC tổ chức hằng năm để trao đổi thực phẩm và trình bày thời trang.

NOVEMBER 2013: SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISING DINNER / TỔ CHỨC TIỆC GÂY QUỸ HỌC BỔNG

November 27 - VAT organized the Scholarship fundraising event for the scholarship program where VAT recognizes outstanding academic achievements and community spirit of the youth in the community. The scholarships were presented at the Tet Festival on January 18, 2014.

Ngày 27 tháng 11 - HNV Toronto đã tổ chức buổi tiệc gây quỹ Học Bổng với mục đích nâng cao và khuyến khích các em trong vấn đề học vấn. Buổi tiệc rất thành công với sự ủng hộ của rất nhiều ân nhân trong công đồng. Giải thưởng phát học bổng được trao trong lễ khai mạc Hội Chợ Tết ngày 18 tháng 1 năm 2014.


DECEMBER 2013 - FUNDRAISING FOR TYPHOON HAIYAN VICTIMS GÂY QUỸ CHO NẠN NHÂN BÃO HẢI YẾN .

December 1 - VAT held a fundraising event by showing the award winning documentary “Bolinao 52” with the attendance of the film director Duc Nguyen to help victims of super typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Ngày 1 tháng 12 - HNV Toronto tổ chức chiếu phim tài liệu đoạt giải thưởng “Bolinao 52” với sự hiện diện của đạo diễn Nguyễn Hữu Đức để giúp nạn nhân trận siêu bão Haiyan tại Phi Luật Tân.

December 15 – VAT organized a Christmas Gift-Giving celebration for the community with the support of CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish. Toronto City Councillor Anthony Perruzza joined us as a special guest to celebrate the occasion. Ngày 15 tháng 12 – HNV Toronto tổ chức buổi tiệc phát quà Giáng Sinh cho các con em trong cộng đồng, với sự tài trợ của CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish. Citizenship and Immigration Canada Minister Chris Alexander presented Tet Greeting to the Vietnamese community from Prime Minister to VAT President Tho Pham at the Tet Festival 2014. Bộ Trưởng Di Trú Công Dân Vụ Canada Chris Alexander trao tờ chúc Tết của Thủ Tướng Stephen Harper đến cộng đồng Việt cho Chủ Tịch HNV Toronto Phạm Minh Thọ

The Tet Festival was a great opportunity for the Vietnamese community to receive and meet political leaders and honoured guests. Vietnamese Canadian children performed traditional songs and dance at the Tet Festival. These children learn and practice the arts throughout the year to experience some aspects of the Vietnamese culture. The Festival gave them a chance to perform in front of the public to showcase their skills and talents. Các thanh thiếu nhi Canada gốc Việt trình diển nghệ thuật âm nhạc và múa cổ truyền tại Hội Chợ Tết. Các em học và luyện tập suốt năm để trải nghiệm vài khía cạnh văn hóa Việt Nam. Hội Chợ Tết tạo cơ hội cho các em trình diển kỷ năng và tài nghệ trước công chúng.


Two balloon horse sculptures designed by Help Kids to School Foundation and delicately assembled by dozens of volunteers over several days for display at the Tet Festival to celebrate the Year of the Horse. Hai con ngựa bằng bong bóng Như Ý và Cát Tường do tổ chức Help Kids to School Foundation thiết kế và hàng chục thiện nguyện viên lắp ráp công phu qua nhiều ngày để trưng bày tại Hội Chợ Tết nhân dịp Tết năm Giáp Ngọ.

Visitors to the Tet Festival could also enjoy tasty treats such as barbequed picked meat (nem nuong) and sugar cane juice. There are more than 30 exhibition booths to showcase a multitude of products and services offered by Vietnamese businesses in GTA Khách đến tham dự Hội Chợ Tết có dịp thưởng thức các đặc sản quê hương như nem nướng và nước mía. MARCH 2014 – WORKSHOP ON HEPATITIS C PREVENTION HỘI THẢO NGỪA BỆNH VIÊM GAN C

Ngày 5 tháng 3 – Người Việt Toronto và Hội Đồng Văn Hóa Sắc Tộc Canada (CEC) tổ chức buổi hội thảo về phương thức ngăn ngừa và trị liệu viêm gan C và các bệnh truyền nhiểm khác. Tham dự buổi hội thảo này gồm có đại diện Hội Cao Niên Việt Nam Toronto, Hội Cao Niên Việt Nam North York, các nhóm tập thể dục Tai Chi, Khí Công, Line Dance và các hội đoàn khác. MAY 2014–PARTICIPATING IN ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATION THAM GIA SINH HOẠT THÁNG DI SẢN VĂN HÓA Á CHÂU

Ông Thanh tự đóng một chiếc tàu để thoát khỏi Việt Nam năm 1980 cùng với 55 người khác. Hiện nay đã 89 tuổi, ông Thanh vẫn còn là một thiện nguyện viên tích cực cho cộng đồng.

May 4 - Mr. Thanh Tran (third from right), a former VAT board member, won the CMC Award for the Vietnamese community. He built a boat in 1980 to escape from Vietnam with 55 other people. At 89 years old, Mr. Thanh Tran is still an active community volunteer. Ngày 4 tháng 5 - Ông Trần Thiện Thanh (đứng thứ ba từ bên phải) là cựu thành viên Hội Đồng Quản Trị Hội Người Việt Toronto, đã đoạt giải thưởng CMC cho cộng đồng người Việt.

March 5 – VAT and the Canadian Ethnocultural Council (CEC) organized a workshop on the prevention and treatment methods for Hepatitis C and other communicable diseases. The workshop was attended by representatives: Elderly Vietnamese Association of Toronto, North York Vietnamese Canadian Seniors Association, Exercise Clubs practicing Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Line Dance, and other organizations.


May 27–VAT participated at the Asian Heritage Month Celebration organized by the Ontario Ministry of Government Services. VAT staff and volunteerparticipated along with people of 10 other countries. Ngày 27 tháng 5–Hội Người Việt Toronto tham dự buổi sinh hoạt Tháng Di Sản Văn Hóa Á Châu do cơ quan chính phủ Ontario Ministry of Government Services tổ chức. Nhân viên và thiện nguyện viên HNV tham gia cùng với 10 sắc dân khác.

May 24 &25 – VAT participated in the annual Carassauga, Festival of Cultures event at the Hershey Center in Mississauga to showcase Vietnamese culture and to promote VAT settlement services.VAT Pavillion is one of more than 30 ethnic pavilions Ngày 24 & 25 tháng 5 - Hội Người Việt Toronto tham dự lễ hội văn hóa Carassauga tại Hershey Centre in Mississauga để phổ biến văn hóa Việt và phát triển dịch vụ định cư. Gian hàng HNV là một trong số trên 30 gian hàng các sắc tộc.


VAT settlement counsellors serve newcomers under the funding of Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Programs include one-on-one counseling and monthly workshops on various topics such as employment assistance and Citizenship Preparation Class. In the fiscal year from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014, VAT staff served 8,267 client visits, an increase by 47% from the previous year. VAT staff also organized 141 workshops, information sessions and classes. This number is a decrease by 44% from 251 last year, as VAT devoted more time for one-on-one counselling to meet demand. VAT staff has helped many people adapt to their new environment and found jobs suitable to their qualification and experiences. Besides the main funding of $631,696 from CIC during the fiscal year 2013-14, VAT also received smaller funding from three other sources:

• Employment and Social Development Canada (HRSDC): $24,380 for the Computer Training Program for seniors.

• Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH): $20,041 for the Problem Gambling Counselling Program

• City of Toronto: $37,134 for the program to hire and train workers provided by Toronto Employment and Social Services.

Số này giảm 44% so với 251 trong năm trước, với lý do phải dành nhiều thì giờ hơn để tham vấn cho khách.
