2013-2014 1

he University of Nebraska–Lincoln is among the nation’s top 50 public universities, a member of the Big Ten Conference and its academic equivalent, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. Membership in the CIC leverages faculty, funding, facilities, investments and ideas to help us all collectively succeed and compete well in the global marketplace.

Motivated by our vision for a bigger, better UNL as part of the Big Ten, we are working to elevate the scope, scale and influence of UNL. By 2020, we intend for UNL’s enrollment to be 30,000, for our research expenditures to be in the $300 million range and to be able to claim a 6-year graduation rate of 70 percent. We are also planning for a significant increase both in the number and recognition of tenured faculty by 2020.

UNL is now home to nationally prominent athletic and research endeavors. For example, inside the new addition to Memorial Stadium, the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior (CB3) houses UNL researchers who are at the forefront in the study of genetics, neuroscience, physiology, cognition and other areas of brain science. Researchers are furthering the understanding in diverse areas, including concussions and brain injuries, addiction, learning disabilities, early childhood development, and the physiological foundations of our political persuasions.

Nearby, the Nebraska Athletic Performance Lab enables researchers from multiple teams to address topics that relate to human performance and health, technology, nutrition, psychology and learning.

No other university in the nation, to our knowledge, is putting athletics and academics together to conduct research in this way.

Our growing connections with other nations are bringing new richness to an increasingly diverse and international student population. An established American Exchange Center in partnership with Xi’an Jiaotong University in China is helping to bring to life a new global focus.

All that we are doing to continue to move our university forward—to broaden our authentic engagement with our state, nation and world—also brings more opportunity to our students, faculty and alumni.
