In Botanica, MOMIX illuminates the wonders of nature, as well as its own uniquely whimsical, magical, and mysterious brand of dance. For more than thirty years, MOMIX has thrilled audiences worldwide with fantastical sights and fluid movements, using only lighting, imagery, shadow, props, puppets, and, of course, human athleticism. By the standards of modern musical prodigies, starting an instrument at age 17 is relatively late, but for Lionel Loueke (LEE-oh-NEL loo-ECK-ee), this was no barrier to success. Born in the African nation of Benin to creative parents with meager means, Loueke had to save for more than a year to buy his first $50 guitar, and when his strings snapped, he replaced them with bicycle brake cables. Although Loueke’s spontaneity was born of hardship, it inspired his instrumental ingenuity. Soon, he was studying jazz in Paris and Boston, playing as a sideman along-side such luminaries as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Sting, Santana, Esperanza Spalding, and Terence Blanchard, and, eventually, fronting his own trio. A guitarist whom Hancock has dubbed “a musical painter,” Loueke creates soaring melodies—which he often sings in unison with his guitar—and complex harmonies while interweaving his deep knowledge of African folk forms. On the Blue Note label, Loueke has released three albums. His latest, 2012’s Heritage, is a powerful summation and contemplation of his native land’s tumults and treasures. From his humble beginnings to his impressive ascent, Loueke has internalized the international language of jazz while soulfully sharing his tradition with the world in return.

Sansom Harris. Meanwhile, such versatile character actors as Jesse L. Martin, Keith David, and David Ogden Stiers have carved out careers of note on stage and screens large and small.

But did you know two of The Acting Company’s most famous alumni appeared at Purdue on November 7, 1991?Rainn Wilson is best known as irascible egomaniac Dwight Schrute on NBC’s sitcom The Office, which recently ended its run of nine seasons and 200-plus episodes. And Jeffrey Wright has won an Emmy®, Tony®, and Golden Globe® over a long career in which he’s played

Muddy Waters, Colin Powell, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Well before they were stars, Wilson and Wright shared the stage in the Acting Company’s touring produc-tions of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters.

In Dream, Wilson played star-crossed lover Demetrius, while, in Sisters, he played Tusen-bach, a Russian

army lieutenant spoken of as “not at all good-looking.”

Before his three Emmy® nomi-nations for The Office, Wilson applied his distinctive touch on inveterate crime shows (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation) and alongside fellow Acting Company alum Conroy (Six Feet Under).

Wilson has also contributed to a variety of films, encompassing offbeat independent endeavors (Super and Hesher), Oscar® winners (Almost Famous and Juno), and action blockbusters (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Monsters vs. Aliens).

Wright, meanwhile, played Puck, “that merry wanderer of the

night” who sets Dream asunder, and Rode, a sub-lieutenant, in Sisters.

Just three years later, Wright was on Broadway in Tony Kushner’s magnum opus, Angels in America, as Belize—a role he recreated in an HBO miniseries and for which he won the three aforementioned awards.

Wright has also appeared in a plethora of prestigious films—from supporting turns in such Oscar® nominees and winners as Syriana, The Ides of March, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close to playing James Bond’s CIA counterpart, Felix Leiter, in Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace. He’ll next be seen as Beetee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Raised in both the borough of Brooklyn and the Bluegrass State of Kentucky, Martha Redbone calls herself a “Hoodala-chia Country Mama.” She’s also one of the leading contempo-rary voices in Native American music—

fusing her Cherokee and Choctaw heritage to her African-American legacy in vibrant funk and R&B. On her latest, The Garden of Love: Songs of William Blake, Redbone plunges her hands deep into both the fertile soil of American roots music and the late- 18th century mystical and romantic realm of the British bard’s poetry. Although separated by centuries and cultures, Redbone and Blake are a remarkable match. Redbone vocally communes with Blake’s evocative words, setting them to the soundtrack of Appalachia: driving bluegrass, Piedmont blues, plaintive field hollers, Seminole chants, and spirited gospel rave-ups. Gathering critical attention and accolades throughout the Americana/roots and Native American communities, The Garden of Love was guided in production by John McEuen (of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fame) with a stellar cast of Nashville’s top session artists. Throughout, Redbone infuses Blake’s iconic poetry with both a reverence for old-time music and a modern-day edge. These are tales of youthful promise, lost innocence, wondrous beauty, deep sorrow, nurtured jealousy, and regained hope. Hailing from southern India, Abhishek Raghuram (ah-BEE-shake ra-GOO-ram) is a leading vocalist in the Carnatic music tradition of southern India. Long ago, Indian classical music split into two major divisions along geographic lines, with the north being more closely related to the music of Persia while music of the south became among the most rhythmically complex musical forms in the world. Raghuram, a child prodigy in a legendary musical family, took up the quintessential two-headed drum known as the mridangam and began winning accolades as early as age 7. Just two years later, awards for vocal performance began to follow, and his reputation has grown rapidly ever since. Now, as a renowned and experienced international touring artist,

his music has been called food for the intellect, mind, heart, and soul. While tradition and training have been central to Raghuram’s musical development, he has nonetheless developed his own stylistic voice within the form, and with the clout of his talented heritage behind him, he may well be on his way to creatinga new bani, or school of style, for the world of Indian classical music. Just as in many early forms of Western classical music and the ongoing tradition of jazz, improvisation on a theme or scale—or, in this case, a raga—is where the discipline of training meets artistry in the moment. Joining Raghuram to set his harmonic and rhythmic world in motion will be B.U. Ganesh Prasad on the violin and Neyveli Narayanan on the mridangam.

Choral performance is a binding thread in Estonia’s tapestry of cultural and political history. Laulupidu—an amateur choral event in Tallinn, Estonia, that draws more than 25,000 singers—had its formative roots in Estonia’s 19th-century crusade toward self-government. More than a century later, the Singing Revolution’s choral protests helped the nation regain independence from the Soviet Union. Founded in 1981 by Tõnu Kaljuste and now conducted by Daniel Reuss, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir is a premier ensemble formed from this proud tradition. With voices of almost otherworldly intonation and gravitas, the powerhouse group has earned a Grammy® award and many nominations for its pristine and evocative recordings on the ECM, Harmonia Mundi, and Virgin labels, and has been lauded during its frequent and extensive tours through Europe, Canada, Japan, and the United States. Its Purdue program will center upon works from the highly celebrated Estonian composers Arvo Pärt, Veljo Tormis, Cyrillus Kreek, and Mart Saar, along with a work by Ukrainian composer Galina Grigorjeva. Doktor Kaboom! returns with an all-new show that

explores the real problems associated with rocket science—centrifugal force, gravity, inertia, momentum, and…yes...math! A spiky-haired German scientist and sometimes rapper, Doktor Kaboom! turns the stage into his own personal laboratory and the audience into his assistants. The boisterous brainchild of scientist/comedian David Epley, Doktor Kaboom! explores the unpredictable, entertaining possibilities of scientific exploration. After Phillips sold the studio in 1969, no recordings were made there until 1985, when Perkins, Cash, and Lewis reunited along with Roy Orbison for their Class of ’55 album. Reopened as Sun Studio in 1987 and now a National Historic Landmark, it’s open both to the public for tours and artists for recording.

Artists and acts such as Ringo Starr, Def Leppard, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Petty, Beck, John Fogerty, Matchbox 20, and Maroon 5 have recorded there.

U2 recorded three songs for Rattle and Hum there, including radio hits “Angel of Harlem” and “When Love Comes to Town”—cramming the band, a horn section, background vocalists, and a film crew into the small studio.

John Mellencamp cut a majority of his most recent studio album, No Better Than This, at Sun, praising the acoustical aptitude literally marked by Phillips’s X’s on the floor.

In 2011, Chris Isaak recorded covers of Sun Studio classics there for Beyond the Sun—includ-ing “Ring of Fire,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “It’s Now or Never,” “Oh, Pretty Woman,” and more.

Sun Studio: The Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Rollby Nick Rogers

It was on a tiny corner in Memphis, Tennessee, that Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis came together for a legendary impromptu jam on December 4, 1956, at Sun Studio.

When owner Sam Phillips called the media, the iconic photo and nickname that inspired the musical were born.

But Sun Studio gave birth to something bigger: rock ‘n’ roll. Phillips, a radio engineer, opened this postage stamp-sized studio in 1950. Just one year later, “Rocket 88,” considered the first-ever rock ‘n’ roll song, was recorded there. It’s also where Presley cut his first-ever recording (“My Happiness”).

In William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Lysander is a devoted romantic. Inspired by epics of old, he utters idylls about love’s ideals while courting his beloved Hermia. And similarly, this namesake trio embraces the chamber music tradition with equal devotion. The Lysander Piano Trio was founded in 2009 while its players— Itamar Zorman, violin; Michael Katz, cello; and Liza Stepanova, piano—were graduate students at The Juilliard School. Since that time, the trio has performed at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and David Rubenstein Atrium, Merkin Concert Hall (for the 2012 ASCAP Awards), Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. This versatile trio continues to be an immediate standout at chamber music compe-titions, having won 2012’s Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Com-petition. At Purdue, this ensemble called “a trio with brio” (The New York Daily News) will perform a program titled The Call of the Exotic, featuring works by Ernest Bloch, Franz Joseph Haydn, and Maurice Ravel.

Is “reality TV” really real? How much is scripted? How much is truly spontaneous? How can you tell? Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez. Bob Marley, Miriam Makeba, and Fela. These legend-ary musicians—among scores of others—all harnessed the power of song to promote political change and human rights. The power of “three chords and a guitar” has long been celebrated for its persuasive potential, and 31-year-old singer and guitarist Fatoumata Diawara (or “Fatou,” for short) joins that great tradition, lifting the human spirit out of war-torn Mali. Singing in Bambara, the principal dialect of southern Mali, Fatou wraps messages of support for women, orphaned children, and the cessation of war inside songs of extraordinary beauty and rhyth-mic delight that easily transcend worldwide language barriers.

Diawara carries the torch for a proud tradition of Wassoulou— the culturally vibrant area of Mali from which she hails—that strong female voices have the power to speak to and change the world around them. Indeed, on Fatou, her debut on Nonesuch Records, Diawara’s warm, affecting voice winds its way around her intricate guitar and percussion arrangements. Charlotte’s Web is based on E.B. White’s loving story of the friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a spider named Charlotte—who together work to take charge of

Wilbur’s destiny. Charlotte, a fine writer and true friend, hits on a plan to fool Farmer Zuckerman; she will create a “miracle.” Spinning the words “some pig” in her web, Charlotte weaves a solution, which not only makes Wilbur a prize pig but also ensures his place on the farm forever. Featuring farm animals both madcap and endearing, this treasured tale explores bravery, selfless love, and the true meaning of friendship. This performance will last approximately 60 minutes.

Few ensembles over the past 130 years have created a crescendo of classical music history quite like the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. What began as a private ensemble commissioned by Alexander III in 1882 has grown into a showcase for preeminent Russian soloists (Sergei Prokofiev), fiery conductors (Richard Strauss), and the preferred performers of world premieres from such legendary composers as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Dmitri Shostakovich. Now, Russia’s longest-running orchestra will make its Purdue debut during an exclusive U.S. tour that features a program of Russian masterpieces. Joining the orchestra onstage for this electrifying evening is Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin, whose performance BBC Music Magazine called “a stunning tour de force.” Kozhukhin will perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto in B-flat minor, which is among the world’s most beloved concerti in the canon. WITH “ARRESTING FRESHNESS and subtlety” (NPR), Juilliard-trained pianist Simone Dinnerstein internalizes her interpretations—every note, pause, and dynamic is filled with emotion and inten-tionality. In 2005, she blazed her own trail by self-financing her critically lauded debut in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. Then, in 2007, she self-financed her now legendary recording of Bach’s “Goldberg” Variations, which zoomed to No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Classical chart when Telarc released it. What is jazz? Ask a record label executive, a musicologist, and a working jazz musician, and you’ll get a wide variety of answers. Even if you asked three jazz mu-sicians, you’d likely get three dif-ferent answers. In some circles, even the word “jazz” itself has been branded as outmoded and anachronistic. Debates as to the historical, cultural, and sociologi-cal forces surrounding jazz music loom as large as the musical ones once the discussions get rolling. Trumpet player Nicolas Payton (who has played at Purdue on numerous occasions) has been an advocate for the use of the term Black American Music, or BAM, to give this music a name—a clear reference to the distinct cul-tural significance of the musical antecedents and the originating, inventive, and perpetuating role that Black Americans have clearly played in the genre.

Regardless of the discussion of its origins, however, jazz today is clearly a global force, studied and performed throughout the world with an incredibly diverse array of aesthetic approaches.

So, how is it that the word “jazz” can still contain all of this disparate music? Is it still, well, jazz? Look to the core of the form for guidance. Jazz has consistently called upon disciplined and accomplished musicianship and a capability to transform melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic ideas, but these points aren’t the distinguishing factors. It’s that these very aspects are happening in real time through the power of improvisation. And it’s usually involving several artists who have the capability to do these things simultaneously. It’s here that

you’ll find immensely creative linkage through an incredibly broad and ever-expanding musical practice.

This season, we’ll be demonstrat-ing this range (yet again!) from three extraordinary vantage points. Lionel Loueke (Sept. 26) taps the inspiration of his roots in Benin, Africa, to shape his har-monic and rhythmic core. Recently drawing inspiration from melodies by Sonny Rollins, Brazilian bossa-pop artist Bebel Gilberto, Elvis Costello, and even the ’60s blues-pop single “Hey Joe,” Brad Mehldau continues to elevate the art of impro-visation to a nearly unparalleled plane with his transformative touch. The celebrated Nonesuch recording artist envisions an ever-expanding body of work as essential for the classic trio format of piano, bass, and drums. With longtime collaborators Larry Grena-dier and Jeff Ballard, Mehldau has certainly established himself not only as a deft interpreter but also as a vital composer whose musical intellect is matched by prodigious technical gifts. Enabled by his diverse interests and talents, he has collaborated with such jazz greats as Pat Metheny, Charles Lloyd, Lee Konitz, and Joshua Redman, scored original music for a number of films, toured with the

Choosing just the right performances for our audience at Purdue Convocations is a challenge and a

privilege we’re always happy to take on. And we can’t deny it—it’s also a lot of fun! But where do we find fresh, innovative, and amusing shows to bring to campus season after season? One great place to look is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival. For three straight weeks in August, art lovers, including Convoca-tions director Todd Wetzel, flock to Scotland’s capital for around-the-clock performances in all genres and unique acts that defy easy categorization.

The Fringe Festival, as it’s casually known, originated in 1947, when the city launched its official Edinburgh Interna-tional Festival to celebrate and promote the arts in Europe following the devastation of the Second World War. Eight theatre groups who were not on the official program showed up uninvited and decided to stage their shows anyway, wherever they could find space. This fringe element of artists grew each year, until, in 1958, the Fringe Festival

was formalized to promote its performances alongside the more traditional offerings of the International Festival. The Fringe retains its quirky character in part because it remains an open festival, welcoming any performer who has a show to stage and a venue in which to do so. Many other cities, including Indianapolis, now host Fringe Festivals with the same open tradition.

The Fringe Festival has far surpassed its progenitor in size, and it’s hard to imagine the festival’s scope if you haven’t attended. In 2012, the numbers were mind-boggling: 22,457 performers staged 42,096 performances of 2,695 different shows in 279 venues. Todd has experienced the rush of the festival firsthand, attending five times since 2005, often to take in a special festival showcase hosted by the British Council. His festival record is seeing 24 shows in seven days, and he has attended performances in the oddest spaces you can imagine.

“I’ve seen shows in apartments, catacombs, grottos, galleries, graveyards, and pubs,” Todd says, “plus one that started on a public bus and finished in

an apartment; a promenade performance that wandered through a department store after business hours; a one-on-one, virtual, 3D goggle-wearing performance; and a reality- theatre mystery work that had me trekking throughout the city receiving instructions via cell phone as well as handoffs from ‘mysterious strangers’ on the streets. The great unifying factor in all of these is the power of theatre to communicate ideas with as few limitations as possible.”

Several recent performances hosted by Convocations originated at the Fringe Festival. This season, we are fortunate to bring you two— the all-seven-books-in-70- minutes madness of Potted Potter, which must be seen to be believed, and the lighthearted and surreal physical theatre of LEO, which uses video projec-tion to disorient your sense of gravity and space. We hope you’ll join us on the fringe!

Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of America’s foremost authorities on space science. Through his numerous books, various social media outlets, and TV appearances ranging from PBS and the History Channel to The Colbert Report and The Big Bang Theory, this astrophysicist also is one of his field’s most ardent, and playful, ambassadors. Educated in New York’s public school system before embarking into higher education, Tyson has focused his research and professional work on our universe’s structure, the Milky Way galaxy, and the formation of stars. Following myriad academic and presidential appointments, Tyson is currently the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History and a member of NASA’s prestigious Advisory Council. Tyson also curates a Twitter feed (@neiltyson) of more than a million followers, for whom he drops the science 140 characters at a time.

As his program’s name implies, Tyson will base his topics of discussion on the most recent, noteworthy, and exciting events in space science. It’s a talk tailored to Tyson’s mission to ensure that science remains a lively, vivid topic in American discourse— communicated in ways that connect with us all.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright speaks with humor, insight, and eloquence about her life as a young refugee who rose to become the highest-ranking woman in the U.S. government at that time. Albright sketches a vivid portrait of her years as Secretary of State and offers candid descriptions of her experiences in Washington, D.C., and overseas. She also discusses America’s global role and the many challenges facing President Barack Obama and other world leaders today on a number of foreign policy issues.

This biennial series is named for the late Purdue historian Louis Martin Sears, who was a faculty member in the then-joint Department of History and Political Science from 1920 until his retirement in 1956. Sears specialized in diplomatic history and biography and was the author of numerous books. The lecture series bearing his name is alternately produced by the History and Political Science departments, in conjunction with Purdue Convocations.

Robinson is now a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C. His most recent book, God Believes in Love: Straight Talk About Gay Marriage, was published in 2012.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT A GREAT CONVOS EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD?

The best show you’ve done, to me, was The opera Show. i sent an email about that one! And i’m not driven to do that usually, but I did. I just said, “What a show.” Number one, i am an opera fan. Now, that does not mean that i’m knowledgeable, but I do enjoy it and have seen a number of operas when they come to convos. i know you can’t have one every year, so when you have them, i like to see them.

This was so neat because it was such a contemporary approach to opera. it was a young company, as i understood it, and they did interpretive scenes of different operas. I can’t explain it. It was just wonderful. it wasn’t like you were seeing a full opera, just pieces.

i remember there was a student sitting next to me, and, of course, during intermission, we started talking, and i said, “Have you ever seen an opera?” and she said, “No,” and I said, “Well after seeing this, do you think you’d want to?” and she said, “Yeah, i think i would!”

What a great way to expose people to opera if they’ve never seen one! i know for some people, you say the word “opera” and they just shut down. I just wish you would bring that one back because it was terrific.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH CONVOS? i’ve played violin since i was 3. When I saw Itzhak Perlman at Elliott Hall of Music, I think I was the first person to stand up the second the last note played. it was unbelievable. it was absolutely mind-blowing. There weren’t that many people in college that would go to a classical-music performance, but i had friends who were willing to go, so we went and it was just amazing.

i’ve always felt like if it wasn’t for Purdue Convocations, this would just be any other town in the Midwest. But because we have an organization that brings us top-notch entertainment, this is a great place to live, with an educated population, places to go, and things to do. And i think convocations is the top of those things to do.

That’s why i’ve always been a friend, even though my donations aren’t large. i do what i can to support performances. i want to have those choices. even if it’s someone i’ve never heard of, i know convos staff is scouting top-quality shows to bring to town. even if it’s a flutist I’ve never heard of, it’s a pretty safe bet it’s going to be someone fantastic.

IS THERE A FRIENDS EXPERIENCE YOU LIKE THE MOST?

This is not why i give my check every year, but one of the most beneficial things is that your seating location just continues to improve, and that really is huge. It’s just wonderful to see the differences in the artists on stage and see their expressions.

Another thing i look forward to is the Party of the Season because we

learn about upcoming shows, get excited for what’s coming, and enjoy fun video clips.

i also think the Soirée is so cool because you get a private performance. i had dinner with a cellist, and then he went up on stage, and i said to myself, “That’s my guy! That’s the guy we had dinner with that’s up there playing!” it’s fascinating. it’s so good to talk to them and then have this intimate performance for just a small group.

WHAT IS THE BEST CONVOS EXPERIENCE YOU’VE EVER HAD?

When SToMP came, they were pretty popular. So we went and saw this incredible show in elliott. Afterward, we left and went to the parking garage, where traffic was backed up. We were stuck there for a long time, and every-one started honking and beating on the roofs of their cars. They created this amazing rhythm! It was wonderful!everybody rolled their windows down

to listen to it, and finally, once traffic started to move, you could hear the honking and the rhythm all down Third Street. It was the most amazing extension of what happened in the theatre spreading throughout the community.

I’ve always felt like if it wasn’t for Purdue Convocations, this would just be any other town in the Midwest.

Yes, it was probably in 1988. i came with several friends to see cATS. it was an amazing performance, and I was hooked.

DO YOU REMEMBER AT WHAT POINT YOU DECIDED TO JOIN THE FRIENDS?

i think it was immediately after cATS. No matter what is going on in your life, live performances can lift you up, make you feel good about yourself and the world, and shut off what is go-ing on in your life at that point in time.

DO YOU HAVE FOND MEMORIES OF UNEXPECTED INTERACTIONS AT PERFORMANCES?

one comes to mind right away. i often give tickets away if i’m not using them or stand at the box office and ask students if they’d like to sit with me.one fall, i gave a ticket to a young man named Jim. Several years later,

i was again looking for someone to use my tickets. A man approached me and said, “Is your name Jan?” I said, “Yes,” and he told me, “i want you to know i am standing out here giving my ticket away, too, because you had done that for me at a time when i really needed something to cheer me up.” That really touched me. it is nice to know these experiences in giving have been paid forward by someone else. it still gives me chills to know that he was there giving a ticket to someone, too.

YOU LIVE IN INDY—A CITY WITH MANY ARTS OPPORTUNITIES—YET GRACIOUSLY CHOOSE TO SPEND LOTS OF TIME WITH US AT CONVOS. WHAT MAKES YOU GO THE DISTANCE?

The Friends organization is like a giant family. every program that i come to see, i am asked about how i am, asked about my family. i ask about others. it is like a big, musical, performing-arts family.

WHAT LEGACY DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE THROUGH BEING A FRIEND OF CONVOS?

i hope that by supporting the endow-ment, by word of mouth, and by giving tickets to students or whomever, that it lights a spark that will last a life-time—like a candle lighting another candle, then lighting another candle.

When i was growing up, i never had the opportunity to be exposed to theatre and art, and i am so hoping it can make a difference in someone’s life and how they perceive themselves or the world around them, to become open-minded and accepting and know that we are all here but we don’t have to be alike.

Providing interaction between students and artists both in and beyond the theatre is an important part of our mission. The Purdue Convocations Curricular Connections program offers opportunities for preschool through grade 12 (P-12) and college-level students to experience performances and learn more about artists in the classroom. Annually, more than $28,000 in gifts from the Friends of Convocations and Corporate Partners provide major support for these outreach activities.

College-level activities include:

• Weekday P-12 matinees on the Purdue campus or in local theaters. (More than 3,400 students attended artist residencies in area schools.)

• Need-based ticket and transportation scholarships for students to attend matinee performances. Last season, 6,391 P-12 students attended a school matinee, with 2,366 receiving a subsidized reduced rate or free tickets. More than $2,800 in transportation scholarship assistance was distributed.

• Theatre Arts Day: high school students interested in professional work in the technical side of theatre and audio-video production have a school-day opportunity to participate in hands-on sessions with the staff of Hall of Music Productions.

• Subsidized tickets to performances for as little as $10 when a faculty member connects a performance to curriculum.

• On-campus artist residencies.• Master classes on special topics.

INFO to knowEstablished in 1975, the Student Concert

Committee (SCC) accepts eight students each year for a two-year term. Undergoing the equivalent of an internship in the music business, SCC members help select, market, and work SCC-sponsored concerts. They get real-life experience in the concert business, and several have gone on to work in the industry. But more importantly, they learn business and life skills that will serve them in whatever profession they choose.

Founded in 1985, Convocations Voice

Network (CVN) is a student group that helps to support and promote

Convocations performing arts events. More than 300 students strong, this

group ushers, sells merchandise and concessions, and helps in many other ways with performances and

other Friends of Convocations and outreach events. In exchange,

members can stay and see the show for free, not to mention make

a lot of new friends. They have become an essential and important

volunteer group that has also given generously to support our P-12 outreach program. We are happy to see students so involved in the arts!

CHILDRENWhile we encourage early intro-duction to the arts, we also wish to provide the best environment for all of our patrons. Our child policy is as follows:

We request that children under 6 years of age not be brought to shows, except those that list an age recommendation for children in our brochure or on our website.

Infants on laps are only permitted at shows recommended for children. All patrons, including infants on laps, must have a ticket due to fire marshal requirements.

CONTENT DISCLAIMERSIf you have questions about show content or age appropriateness, see our website, convocations.org, for additional information, including audio and video samples for most shows. Staff members can provide more information; however, you are ultimately responsible for deciding whether a show’s content is appropriate for you and your family.

GIFT CARDSGift cards are available in any denomination and are valid for all Convocations and Student Concert Committee shows. Gift cards can be purchased at campus box offices or by calling (765) 494-3933.

STuDENT TICKET DISCOuNTSDiscounted student tickets (pg. 40) are available for Purdue and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Each person using a student ticket must be a student and be able to present a current student ID.

TICKET FEESRegular-season shows in this book include a service fee; all listed prices are the final price. Tickets purchased through Ticketmaster are subject to additional fees.

REFuNDS & EXCHANGESWe are unable to issue refunds or exchange tickets. If you are unable to attend a show, consider one of the following options:

Give or sell your ticket to someone else.

Return your ticket to the box office any time prior to the show and it will be offered to a student free of charge.

If you have a PICK 5 ticket, return it to the box office 48 hours prior to the show and receive credit for a tax-deductible donation.

INFO to knowDOORSDoors generally open 30 minutes prior to showtime. Late arrivals might not be seated immediately.

ACCESSIBLE SEATINGWheelchair seating is available in all venues with companion seating nearby. Extra-wide seats are available in Zone A in Elliott Hall of Music. Please inform the box office of special seating needs when ordering.

AuDIO ENHANCEMENTAudio enhancement is available. See an usher for the easy-to-use earphone system. Sign language interpretation is available with sufficient advance notice and conditional upon the availability of qualified service providers. Please request this service at least 60 days prior to the performance.

LARGE-PRINT PROGRAMSLarge-print programs are available upon request. See an usher for a copy.

SERVICE ANIMALSService animals are welcome. Special seating is required. When ordering, request an aisle seat and please inform the box office that a service animal will be with you.
