why we give to Alverno...

“‘Charity begins at home’… I remember hearing this when I was younger, but never realized the full impact of this statement until recently. Alverno is my second home. I have been here since 1990 starting as an English teacher, becoming Dean of Students, Activities Director, Assistant Head of School, and now Head of School. But my most important role was that of a parent to my four children. My three girls are Alverno alumnae. (My son, unfortunately, didn’t qualify.) I give to Alverno because it not only provides me with an amazing job which I thank God for every day, it also provided my three daughters with a solid education and Alma Mater that they love. Each of their best friends to this day are Alverno alumnae. They each graduated from four year universities and each feels that their success started with what they learned at Alverno. So I give for them, for me, and for my home – Alverno.”

Julia V. Fanara, P’01, P’03, P’05 Head of School

why we give to Alverno...

“‘Why We Give to Alverno’… if you ever had any doubts about giving to Alverno, you only need to attend a Graduation ceremony. You can’t help but reflect on how far the graduates have come in four short years. The graduates enter Alverno as children and leave as young adults, very well prepared to confront the challenges of the world. This has been true for my wife, Rita (Class of 1972), and our daughter, Rachel (Class of 2000).

I give because all young women deserve Alverno’s superior education. A number of our families struggle financially and they make many sacrifices to send their daughters to Alverno. I give because all young women deserve to be educated in Alverno’s accepting and safe environment. I give because Alverno provides Catholic values so that our students can make a difference in a world that sorely needs these values. I give because Alverno makes a very real difference in our students’ lives.

Your giving makes a real difference too. Alverno is once again on the move, due in a great part to your generosity. For all the reasons that we give to Alverno, perhaps the most important to me is that our students will shape the future. Our generosity gives them the education, training, temperament, values and courage to make the world a better place for all of us.”

Ken Farfsing, P’00 President, Board of Trustees

why we give to Alverno...

“As a member of the Alumnae Committee and the former Registrar at Alverno, I give because I love Alverno and what it stands for: strong, well-educated, accomplished women who recognize the importance of giving back. Having learned about volunteerism from my mom who actively participated in philanthropy work throughout her life, I am very proud to belong to a strong group of alumnae who think enough about Alverno to come back and be involved. I’ve seen first-hand how involved the faculty and staff are and how much they care about their students, and that means a lot to me as well. But, most importantly, I believe in an all-girls’ education... and Alverno does it best!”

eAHPOverviewThe Early Admission Honors Program at Alverno High School (EAHP) allows qualified students entering the sixth, seventh or eighth grade to bypass the remainder of their middle school studies and attend Alverno High School as full-time high school students. The EAHP was created to provide an engaging environment for advanced and gifted students who are ready for a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum centering on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Students who graduate from the EAHP complete a STEM-based, college-preparatory curriculum at an early age, typically two full years ahead of most high school students.

The EAHP AdvantageStudents admitted to the Early Admission Honors Program at Alverno have an opportunity to complete a rigorous college-prep curriculum, years ahead of most high school students. Such an achievement enhances one’s chances of gaining acceptance at top colleges and universities.

Students who are considering careers in a STEM-related field typically seek admission at colleges and universities with strong and reputable programs in STEM fields. The primary objective of the EAHP is to equip and prepare students, not just for admission to such programs, but also for the demands of a STEM-related major in college. EAHP students enjoy the advantage of having committed and experienced teachers (all of Alverno’s math

and science teachers hold advanced degrees), small class sizes (the student-teacher ratio at Alverno is 12:1), and access to state-of-the-art equipment (through partnerships with local universities and corporations, Alverno’s science labs have access to the highest quality and most up-to- date equipment).

Unlike larger schools where a student’s academic achievements may become diluted by the high number of students in one’s grade level, the small size of the student community at Alverno provides the benefit of more accurately reflecting a student’s actual academic accomplishments.

Alumnae Voices“Alverno taught me that commitment is the true driver for success. Whenever I start a new project, I always seek to find the same level of engagement I had with many of my high school activities – the passion, dedication, excitement, willingness to work hard and do everything I can to become better at the task at hand. The Alverno culture instilled in me the importance of being a dynamic, confident young woman.”

— Patty Park ‘05 (entered Alverno at 12) and Stanford Alumna ‘09 (entered Stanford at 16)

why we give to Alverno...

“We are passionate about Alverno’s mission, which empowers, encourages, and nurtures a strong self-image for young women as they prepare for entrance into college. Alverno emphasizes individuality, integrity, values, and a strong work ethic, all of which are cultivated amongst a diverse student body, something which is representative of the world in which we live today. The complex heritage of Alverno’s population is both embraced and celebrated, as well as the idea that every girl should feel empowered and encouraged to strive to be whatever she wants to be. These are the reasons why we remain passionate and committed to helping Alverno foster the growth of these young women.”

why we give to Alverno...

“We give to Alverno High School to strengthen Catholic education by enhancing classroom learning through donations of the most recent and affordable technological hardware and software, by providing scholarship funds for outstanding students, and by supporting Phase I of Alverno’s Master Plan. Our donations acknowledge Alverno’s primary mission in preparing and empowering exceptional young women for future academic success and leadership by developing the skills necessary to compete in today’s and tomorrow’s global economies. These preparations are manifested in our daughter’s professional and community accomplishments. Thank you, Alverno!”

STeM ProgramAt the United Nations General Assembly in September of 2011, the United States signed a new Declaration on Women’s Participation, and expressed its strategy and commitment to “break down economic and political barriers that stand in the way of women and girls.” In the wake of that message, in December of 2012, the United States announced that one of the top priorities of the nation was to increase the number of students receiving undergraduate degrees in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathetics)-related fields by one million over the next decade.

This national commitment to improving the education of women and girls in STEM-related fields speaks to serious and persistent problems of gender inequality in the state of California. While women and girls make up just over 50 percent of the state population, only 24 percent of its scientists and engineers are women. This disproportionate under-representation of women in STEM-related occupations reflects a similar disproportion in women’s education, particularly at the college level. Only 22 percent of those enrolled in computer science programs, for example, are women. In engineering programs, women comprise only 20 percent, and in mathematics, women still lag behind at 37 percent. Such disparities between women and men in education at the college level have roots in secondary education.

The Early Admission Honors Program at Alverno High School was created, in part, as a response to the global and statewide campaign to break down the social and economic barriers that hinder the progress of women in education.

why we give to Alverno...

“I give to the Alverno community because it is in this beautiful place that our young women learn and laugh, come to understand the true meaning of compassion, acquire some understanding of the radical challenges of the Gospel, and become who they are meant to be. I am blessed each day to be among these unique students and colleagues who so enrich my life.”

Eileen Garabedian College Counselor

why we give to Alverno...“I had an excellent education at Alverno and I had a great overall high school experience. When it was time for my daughters to register for high school, there was no question in my mind that Alverno was where I wanted them to go. They both attended and graduated from Alverno and both feel that they had an exceptional high school experience that prepared them well for college. I give to Alverno to ensure that all girls have the opportunity to attend such a wonderful school and to ensure that well rounded women continue to graduate and enter society.”

why we give to Alverno...

“Forty-five years after my own graduation, my connection and commitment to Alverno remains strong. Alverno’s message of “empowering each young woman to be exactly who she wants to be” is timeless. I am proud of my Alverno heritage, and that is why I am “paying it forward” with my financial support. I hope that in so doing, perhaps 45 years from now, a 2014 alumna will feel as I do and act on that feeling. Continued blessings to Alverno and the fine young women who are being exceptionally well prepared to make a difference in this world, in their lifetime.”

Alverno improvement Project

If you’ve been on campus recently, then there’s no doubt that you noticed the wonderful changes that are taking place on our campus, including upgrades to our school buildings and grounds.

Upon completion of Phase I of the Master Plan, which was the installation of the pillars and wrought iron fencing along Michillinda Avenue, we listened carefully to what members of our school community were telling us and that was that they had a strong desire to see Alverno use some of the school’s revenue to improve upon the aesthetics of the building exteriors and the grounds surrounding the school and Villa. The Board took the feedback we received very seriously and after considering several different plans of action, it was decided that we would implement an interim project between Phase I and Phase II of the Master Plan, known as the “Alverno Improvement Project”. This project began during the 2014 summer months and will continue through March, 2015.

The “Alverno Improvement Project” included painting the exterior of school buildings and the student lockers, installing new carpeting in the front office (underwritten, in part, by the generosity of a current Board Member), replacing the rain gutters, removing the tennis courts, and landscaping the grounds on the west-side of our campus.

This improvement project is another step towards the completion of the Master Plan and we are very excited about these new developments at Alverno. Not only will our current students and families enjoy the changes, but it will also help us showcase the beauty of our campus when prospective students and their families visit our school.

why we give to Alverno...

“We give to Alverno because we believe in a Catholic education and we want to help the young women of today receive a great education. Alverno empowers girls to have their own opinion, yet respect the opinions of others. The Alverno staff truly cares about the future of their students and they strive to provide a strong educational foundation so that these young girls can grow into dependable adults.”

why we give to Alverno...

“As both an employee and an alumna, Alverno holds a special place in my heart. Each day that I come to work, I am reminded of the gifts that we provide our young women and the truly unique opportunities that Alverno gives them and has given me. It is a privilege to watch our students grow and develop in the same environment in which I was truly empowered to be the individual I am today. Giving back allows me to ensure that Alverno can continue to be a home away from home for our students for generations to come.”

why we give to Alverno...

“The teenage years are so fundamentally full of growth - emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually.

My four years at Alverno gave me the support I needed to grow in all of these areas. So why do I give now of my time, talent and treasure … because Alverno first gave to me and now it’s time for me to give back!.”

why we give to Alverno...

“I give to Alverno because I support the mission and philosophy and would like today’s young women to benefit from the same kind of education that I received when I went to Alverno. I don’t have a lot of extra money to donate to all the causes I wish I could, so I choose to support the one that is right here in my own backyard where I can actually see it make a difference.”

why we give to Alverno...

“I’ve been blessed to receive a great education through the generosity of the Alverno family. I’ve been able to be part of amazing programs and classes that otherwise would not have been accessible to me. Because of the wonderful opportunities given to me by this amazing school, I find it important to always give back to Alverno. I do my best to participate, to fundraise, to promote, and to make sure our school continues to be a place where young women are empowered and valued.”
