Lottery Application Process

T hePrinceGeorge’sCountyPublicSchoolsofferalternativemeanswithin the existing public school system to provide innovativelearningopportunitiesandcreativeapproachestofulfilleducational

objectivesforstudents.

Specialtyprogramsprovidearangeofuniquelearningsubjects,activitiesand/orlearningopportunitiesasanenhancementofchoiceforourcommunity.SpecialtyprogramchoicesincludeBiotechnology,CreativeandPerformingArts,FrenchImmersion,MontessoriandTalentedandGifted.PublicCharterSchoolsarenonsectarian,chosenbyparentsandopentoallstudentsonaspace-availablebasis.EnrollmentinSpecialtyProgramsandPublicCharterSchoolsisopentoallstudentswhoareresidentsofPrinceGeorge’sCounty.

Specialty Programs have specific boundaries. School assignment throughlotteryisbaseduponastudent’shomeaddress.PublicCharterSchoolsdonothaveanattendanceareaboundary.Familiesmayselecttheirschool(s)ofchoicedirectlyonthelotteryapplicationregardlessofresidence.

Spacelimitationsrequirethatadmissiontotheprogram/schoolbegovernedby a random placement lottery. Lottery placement provides the strongestguaranteeofequityinaccess.

The computerized lottery system will assign a random number to eachapplication.Applicationsaresortedbasedonthisrandomlyassignednumberandassignedasequentialnumber.Thelowestrandomnumbergetsnumberone,thenextlowestnumbertwo,andsoforth.Applicationsarethensortedbyprogram.Program/schoolassignmentsarebaseduponspaceavailability.

Availability differs by grade level, Specialty Program and PublicCharterSchool. All applications are given a waiting list number based on theirSpecialtyProgram/PublicCharterSchoolchoice,gradelevelandsequencenumber. Openings are limited in all Specialty Programs/Public CharterSchools.

Submissionofanapplicationisnotaguaranteeofplacement.Theapplicationformpermitsnomore than twoSpecialtyProgramchoicesperstudent. Iftwo Specialty Program choices are selected, each choice will be treatedequallyandplacementwillbemadeaccordingtothefirstavailableopening.Placement is granted for one Specialty Program/Public Charter Schoolchoiceonly.Theotherselectionisnolongeranoption.

The lottery will be held on March 25, 2013. Announcement of student selection will not be made at that time. Students selected through the lottery will be notified by mail. Assignments will be made from the waiting list through September 30, 2013. Waiting lists will not carry over to the following school year.

Note: Charter schools may conduct a separate lottery for admission. In such instances, a separate application process and schedule may be applied. Please contact the school of interest to determine which application process will apply.

Application / Selection / Notification Process

1. Studentsmustbecountyresidentsandhaveavalidstudent identificationnumberinordertocompletethelotteryapplication. Applicationswillnotbeprocessedwithoutthisnumber. FollowtheinstructionsbelowtoobtaintheStudentIdentification(ID) Number:

• For students CURRENTLY attending Prince George’s County Public Schools: - Locatethestudentnumberonyourchild’sreportcard,or gotoyourchild’scurrentschoolandobtainthestudent IDNumberfromtheRegistrar.

• For students NEW to the school system: - Parentsand/orlegalguardiansmayobtainaStudentID Numberbygoingtotheirattendanceboundaryschool withthefollowingdocuments:originalproofofresidenceand originalbirthcertificate.InformtheRegistrarthatyouneeda StudentIDNumbertocompletethelotteryapplication.

• Former students who are no longer attending or already have an ID number: - Parentorlegalguardianshouldmakesuretheiraddress andcontactinformationisuptodatebygoingtotheir boundaryschoolandprovidingnewproofofresidency.

2. Whencompletinganapplication,itisimportanttocompleteevery section;failuretodosomayhindertheprocessingofyourapplication.

3. Applicationswillbeaccepteduntil5p.m.onMarch11,2013. ApplicationsreceivedafterthedeadlineWILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

4. ThelotterydrawingwillbeheldMarch25,2013.

5. Placementnotificationswillbemailedtoparentsbeginningthefourth weekofApril.

6. Awaitinglistwillbeestablishedforthoseapplicantsnotplacedina SpecialtyProgram/PublicCharterSchoolviathelottery.Thewaiting listremainsactiveuntilSeptember30,2013,atwhichtimeitexpires.

7. OnceastudentisenrolledinaSpecialtyProgram/PublicCharter School,thatstudentwillnothavetocompeteforhis/herseatthrough thelotteryforthatprogram/charterschoolagain.

CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTSThe Creative and Performing Artsprogram is designed to develop theinterestsand talentsof students in theartsandenhancetheacademicdisciplinethrough an interdisciplinary approachstressing creativity, artistic expressionandculture.Theenhanceddisciplinaryacademicprogramencouragescreativeandartisticexpression,aswellasself-discipline, focus and critical thinkingskills. Experiences and trainingare designed to challenge, developartistic skills and 21st century skillsfor all students, aswell as to provideexceptional opportunities for theartistically-talentedchild.

NOTE: Kindergartenthrough5thgradestudents enter by the lottery process.Students in 6th – 8th grades enter theprogram through audition, requiring a different application.

FRENCH IMMERSIONThe French Immersion Program isa full immersion model where allacademic subjects are taught in theFrenchlanguageinKindergarten–8thgrade. The 9th-12th continuation is atCentralHighSchool.

French-speaking teachers immersestudentscompletely inFrenchas theylearnthePrinceGeorge’sCountyPublicSchools curriculum in mathematics,science, social studies and LanguageArts. English Reading/LanguageArtsinstructionbeginsin2ndgrade.

French Immersion students meet theprerequisitestoapplytothehighschoolInternationalBaccalaureateProgram.

NOTE: Admission is limited tostudents entering Kindergarten only.Students must be 5 years of age bySeptember1toenterKindergarten.

MONTESSORIMontessori schools provide aninterdisciplinary, discovery-basedapproachtolearningpresentedinmulti-age learning environments designedtomeet theneedsof thechildateachstageofdevelopment.

Primary students, ages 3 to 6, areguided in developing coordination,

concentration, a sense of order andindependence.

Elementary students, ages 6 to 12,learn through interdisciplinary, hands-onactivities.

Middle school students pursuerigorous studies in all core coursesandexperiencesdesignedtohelpthemdelveintotheinterconnectionsofideasandevents.

NOTE: Entry is limited to preschoolstudents who will be age 3 or 4 bySeptember1.StudentsinKindergarten–8thgrademayapplyonlyif theyarecurrentlyenrolledinafull-daycertifiedMontessorischool.

Preschool students do not begin thefirst day of school, but are graduallyintroduced to the program duringthe first few weeks. New 4-year-oldstudents attend half-days for the firsttwoweeksofschoolandarecontactedbytheteacherfortheirspecialinductionday.

OTHER SPECIAL PROGRAMSThe following programs require separate applications not related to the lottery placement process.

The3-year-oldprogramisahalf-dayprogram;notransportationisprovided.Four-year-oldswhodemonstratetherequisitematurityattendthefull-dayprogram.Transportationisprovidedforthe4-year-oldprogram.

Studentsareacceptedonaprobationarystatusforthefirsteightweeks,begin-ningwiththedaytheybecomeactiveparticipantsintheclass.All3-and4-year-oldsmustbefully-independentindressingthemselvesandusingtoilets,andavailabletoattendeveryschoolday.

TALENTED AND GIFTEDTheTAGCenterProgramprovidesTAG-identifiedstudentswithfull-dayadvanced,enriched,acceleratededuca-tionalexperiencestomeettheuniqueandspecializedinstructional,socialandemotionalneedsofgiftedlearners.Atthistime,PGCPShas7elementaryTAGCentersand4middleschoolTAGCenters.

NOTE:StudentsmustbeTAG-identi-fiedinordertoparticipateinthepro-gram.IfyourchildisnotyetidentifiedasTAG,butisintheprocessofbeingscreened,youmayselectTAGonyourapplication.StudentsmustbeidentifiedandcodedTAGbeforelotteryplace-mentoccurs.

BIOTECHNOLOGY (Application Open for Rising 9th Graders Only)TheBiotechnologyProgramoffersafour-yearcollegepreparatoryprograminbiotechnology,biochemistryandtechnicalcareertrainingthatincludesscanningelectronmicroscopy.

Studentswillgainfirst-handexperiencewiththeadvancedtechnologiesusedinbiotechnologyresearch,academiaandindustry.Computerswillsupportclass-roominstruction,aswellasstudent-initiatedresearchprojects.

Abroaderunderstandingoftheroleofscienceanditsimpactontherespon-sibilityofsocietywillbethefocusofanupper-levelseminarclass–Science,TechnologyandSociety.
