Part of our fundraising includes our gala. SummarizedStatementofFinancialPosition – thisrepresents a snapshot of Tafelmusik’s inancialpositionatthe iscalyear‐end.Keyitemsare:Cashandmarketablesecurities (short termdeposits)con irm a healthy cash position. As in other years,Tafelmusik’s cash is high in June because of thereceiptsfromsubscriptionrenewalsfortheupcomingseason. This is slightly increased from last year as aresult of timing and receipts from the CapitalCampaign. Prepaid expenses are expendituresincurred by June 30 that relate to the next season.Deferred revenue re lects revenue of subscriptions, pre‐paidsponsorshipandgovernmentgrants.
Financial Management: Tafelmusik has ademonstratedhistoryofsound inancialmanagement.Extensivebudgeting, monitoring, forecastingandriskmanagement processes are the foundation of thissuccess, along with strong inancial contingencyplanning. Fiscal success is demonstrated in part bybeing de icit free during a period of great artisticexpansion, having fourteen successive surplusbudgets, signi icantrevenuegrowthinearned, privatesector and public sector support, over $800,000 inbalancesheetfundsandanalmost$5MMendowment.Wehavedoubledourrevenuessince1999/2000.The
28
next large growth areas are: a) major gifts, b)sponsorship, andc)ourendowment.
Tafelmusik has aggressively grown its revenues tooffsetsomeofthechallengesandrisksintouringandrecording. The Board approves and monitors theannualbudget.TheFinanceCommittee, which Iheadup as Treasurer, is also charged with monthlymonitoringthecurrentandupcomingseasonbudgetsandforecastsinadetailedandrigorousmanner.
Tafelmusikmanages inancial risksby identifying therisks, having inancial contingencies and havingalternate plans when challenges occur. Tafelmusik’sgeneral operating principle is RISK MANAGEMENT(forexample, having inancialcontingencyplans)andnot RISK AVOIDANCE given our core activities (forexample, touring) involve outside decision‐makersand there is inherent risk in not being the soledecision‐maker.
The Board has approved a balanced budget for the2014/15season,andisverypleasedtheorganizationcan expand its activities in the key areas ofinternational touring, recording, audiencedevelopment, educationandoutreachwhileremainingiscally responsible. In effect the organization willcontinue to concurrently invest in artistic excellenceonaninternationallevel, inourmusicians’,audiences’andtheorganization’sfuture.
