Highlights and Overall Comments: Jeanne Lamon, together with our orchestra, choir, the ManagingDirector Tricia Baldwin, our staff and our Board hasdeliveredanotherverysuccessfulyear.Ofcourse thiswouldnotbepossiblewithout thevery loyalsupportof Tafelmusik by our members, donors and patrons.Wearealsofortunatetohaveastrongandcommittedboard under the able leadership of AndyKenins, ourBoardChair.

Tafelmusikhasalongstandingtraditionofexcellencein inancialmanagement. The 2013/14 season is noexception and represents the14th successive surplus. We have distributed one‐page condensed inancialstatements, as these are easier to follow than thecomplete inancial statement package. Full inancialstatements are available at the back or from theTafelmusikof ice.

Key Highlights of the Statement of Revenue andExpenses‐Operating Fund: The 2013/2014operating surplus was $41,014. It is in line with thebusiness plan which incorporated several newinitiatives andanextensive touringprogram.Concertrevenuescontinuedtogrow,andwearealsohappytoreportthatweexceededour$3MMcapitalfundraisinggoalby$200,000.

Tafelmusik isstronglysupportedbytheTorontoArtsCouncil, Ontario Arts Council, and Canada Councilgrants. Operating and project grants total almost$1MM. In2013/14,weapplied foroperating supportforour2014/15to2016/17operatinggrantsandthissupporthassubsequentlybeenrenewed.

Tafelmusikhasundertakena$3MMCapitalCampaigntoimprovetheacoustics,seatingandstageatitshomevenue. As of June 30, 2014, $1,300,781 had beenexpended on the renovations for Phase 1, with

$2.3MMingrantsanddonationscollectedbythatdate.AsofthisAGM,$3.2MMhasbeenpledgedatthistime,with $1.7MM expended to date. Towards thiscampaign, Tafelmusik received a $820,000 matchinggrant from Canadian Heritage’s Cultural SpacesCanadafund,$100,000fromtheCityofToronto,anda$1MM gift from theHonourableHenryN.R. Therenovation expenses are capitalized as leaseholdimprovements amortized to the end of Tafelmusik’scurrentleasewhichendsJune30,2027.

Tafelmusik toured extensively in 2013/14. Thehighlights of which was being the orchestra inresidence at the Leipzig Bachfest, the Japan/Koreatour, performing in Versailles, France with OperaAtelier, and the USA tour. Touring revenues varygreatly with the number and scale of the touringprogram.

Fundraising revenue for the annual operatingcampaigns remained stable even with the focus onmajor gifts for the capital campaign. We very muchappreciate thegenerosityofourmembers, boardandfriendswhocontinuetoshowtheirenthusiasmfortheorchestraandchamberchoir.TheworkofTafelmusikstaff, theGalaCommitteeandBoardmembersensuredthe galawith the UniversityHealth Network and theArtists Health Centre was a success, generatingapproximately$130,000netincomeforTafelmusik.Inparticular we would like to thank David Linds whochairedthisyear’seventforusandMaryTurnerwhoheadeduptheauction.

The projects may include touring, recording, educationandprogramminginitiativesandrequireapprovalbytheBoardofDirectors. Our auditors, Clarke Henning LLP, have againprovided us with a clean opinion in their auditorsreport. The standard quali ication for charitableorganizations regarding the auditor’s inability toverify the completeness of records of donationrevenuesisreferencedintheirreport.

SummarizedStatementofFinancialPosition – thisrepresents a snapshot of Tafelmusik’s inancialpositionatthe iscalyear‐end.Keyitemsare:Cashandmarketablesecurities (short termdeposits)con irm a healthy cash position. As in other years,Tafelmusik’s cash is high in June because of thereceiptsfromsubscriptionrenewalsfortheupcomingseason. This is slightly increased from last year as aresult of timing and receipts from the CapitalCampaign. Prepaid expenses are expendituresincurred by June 30 that relate to the next season.Deferred revenue re lects revenue of subscriptions, pre‐paidsponsorshipandgovernmentgrants.

Financial Management: Tafelmusik has ademonstratedhistoryofsound inancialmanagement.Extensivebudgeting, monitoring, forecastingandriskmanagement processes are the foundation of thissuccess, along with strong inancial contingencyplanning. Fiscal success is demonstrated in part bybeing de icit free during a period of great artisticexpansion, having fourteen successive surplusbudgets, signi icantrevenuegrowthinearned, privatesector and public sector support, over $800,000 inbalancesheetfundsandanalmost$5MMendowment.Wehavedoubledourrevenuessince1999/2000.The

next large growth areas are: a) major gifts, b)sponsorship, andc)ourendowment.

Tafelmusik has aggressively grown its revenues tooffsetsomeofthechallengesandrisksintouringandrecording. The Board approves and monitors theannualbudget.TheFinanceCommittee, which Iheadup as Treasurer, is also charged with monthlymonitoringthecurrentandupcomingseasonbudgetsandforecastsinadetailedandrigorousmanner.

Tafelmusikmanages inancial risksby identifying therisks, having inancial contingencies and havingalternate plans when challenges occur. Tafelmusik’sgeneral operating principle is RISK MANAGEMENT(forexample, having inancialcontingencyplans)andnot RISK AVOIDANCE given our core activities (forexample, touring) involve outside decision‐makersand there is inherent risk in not being the soledecision‐maker.

The Board has approved a balanced budget for the2014/15season,andisverypleasedtheorganizationcan expand its activities in the key areas ofinternational touring, recording, audiencedevelopment, educationandoutreachwhileremainingiscally responsible. In effect the organization willcontinue to concurrently invest in artistic excellenceonaninternationallevel, inourmusicians’,audiences’andtheorganization’sfuture.
