Head Coach Randy Rahe

The 2013-14 season will mark the eighth for Ran-dy Rahe as head coach of the Weber State men’s basketball team. In seven years with the Wildcats Rahe has led the Wildcats to three Big Sky Championships and six post-season tourna-ment appearances. He has also been named Big Sky Coach of the Year three times and has coached four Big Sky MVP’s.

In seven seasons Rahe has a career record of 150-75 (.667) overall at Weber State and is 92-24 (.793) in Big Sky Conference games. He has led the Wildcats to 20 or more wins in five of seven seasons with the team and has won 25 or more games in each of the past two seasons, including a Big Sky record 30 wins in 2012-13. Rahe’s 150 wins at Weber State is the third most coaching victories in school history and he is just three wins shy of passing Ron Abegglen for second place. His 92 Big Sky wins ranks as the fifth most victories in conference history.

Rahe has also coached 22 Big Sky All-Conference per-formers and 21 Big Sky Academic All-Conference perform-ers in his team with the Wildcats. He has led WSU to 10 or more wins in conference play in all seven seasons at the helm, a Big Sky record.

Weber State is coming off a record-setting season in 2012-13. After losing All-American and future NBA Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard to the NBA, Rahe guided the Wildcats to a record setting 30 win season in 2012-13. WSU fin-ished the year 30-7 overall and became the first team in Big Sky history to win 30 games in a season. The Wildcats won a record 18 Big Sky games and advanced to postsea-son play for the fifth straight season. WSU also became the first team in Big Sky history to advance to the champi-onship game of a national postseason tournament where they lost 77-74 to East Carolina in the championship game of the Collegeinsider.com Tournament. The Wildcats also set a school record with 17 home wins and tied a school record with 11 road wins.

During the past season the Wildcats were the best shoot-ing team in the country, finishing first in the nation in field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage. The ‘Cats also finished in the top 10 in the nation in four other categories and were one of just eight teams in the nation to win 30 games during the season. Davion Berry, Scott Bamforth, Kyle Tresnak and Frank Otis all earned Big Sky All-Conference honors. He was also honored as the 2013 Utah Sportsperson of the Year by the Utah/Idaho Chapter of the National M.S. Society.

Rahe has led the Wildcats to a remarkable 55-14 record over the last two seasons, including a 32-4 Big Sky record. He has led the Wildcats to the title game of the Big Sky Tournament in three of the last four seasons. Rahe has led the Wildcats to great success at the Dee Events Center.

During the 2012-13 season Weber State set a school re-cord with 17 home wins, finishing the year 17-2 at home. In seven seasons Rahe has a career record of 92-13 (.876) at home and is an incredible 54-4 (.931) at home in Big Sky regular season games. During the 2012-13 season the Wildcats also averaged 6,601 fans, by far the best av-erage in the Big Sky and one of the best in the western United States. It was also the school’s best attendance average in 17 seasons.

During the 2011-12 season Weber State posted a 25-7 overall record and a 14-2 record in Big Sky Conference play and advanced to postseason play for the fifth time in Rahe’s six seasons with the team and won a first round game in the collegeinsider.com Postseason Tournament. Weber State also led the nation in free throw percentage at 81.4 percent, the single-best team percentage in the his-tory of the Big Sky Conference. WSU also set a school record for three-point field goals made.

The 2011-12 season was highlighted by the play of All-American, District VIII Player of the Year, and Big Sky MVP Damian Lillard who had perhaps the greatest season in school history, finishing second in the nation in scoring at 24.5 points per game. Lillard set a school record for single-season points with 784, the third most points in Big Sky history and became the first player in the history of the con-ference to earn All-American honors. He was also a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, John Wooden Award and Oscar Robertson Award. Lillard went on to become the sixth pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers and later became the NBA Rookie of the Year.

The 2010-11 season was another outstanding coaching job by Rahe. Despite losing reigning Big Sky MVP Damian Lillard to a season-ending injury just nine games into the season, the Wildcats still managed to post a season re-cord of 18-14 and make a run at the Big Sky title. They also finished 11-5 in the Big Sky, taking third in the league standings.

After starting the Big Sky season with a pair of road losses, the Wildcats won 11 of their next 13 league games to get into a fight for the league title. WSU beat Eastern Wash-ington in the first round of the conference tournament, be-fore losing in the semifinals of the tournament. The ‘Cats also advanced to the College Basketball Invitational where they lost to Oregon in the first round. Two players (Scott Bamforth and Kyle Bullinger) earned First Team Big Sky All-Conference honors.

Coach Rahe was hired as the ninth coach in Weber State history in March 2006. In his first season as head coach, with just three returning players from the previous season, Rahe put together a squad of newcomers and began the process of restoring the winning tradition of Wildcat bas-ketball. That season he surpassed all expectations, lead-ing the Wildcats to a 20-12 record and a tie for the Big Sky Conference regular-season title. The Wildcats then won the postseason conference tournament and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. In the 2007-08 season Rahe led the Wildcats to a 16-14 overall record and a third place finish in the Big Sky. During the 2008-09 season, Weber State finished 15-1 in Big Sky Conference play and won the conference regular season title. WSU became the first Big Sky team ever to finish 8-0 on the road in confer-ence action. WSU senior Kellen McCoy was named the Big Sky MVP.

In the 2009-10 season the Wildcats had another strong year where they repeated as Big Sky champions. WSU posted a 20-11 overall record and a 13-3 mark in Big Sky play. Sophomore Damian Lillard was honored as the Big Sky MVP. WSU advanced to the NIT for the second-straight season, losing at Cincinnati in the first round.

A native of Bancroft, Iowa, Rahe was a two-sport athlete at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa as a point guard

on the men’s basketball team and a shortstop on the base-ball team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1982. He began his coaching career on the high school level in Colorado. During his tenure as the head coach at Stratton High School (1985-88) he was twice named District Coach of the Year leading his teams to district and league championships in 1986, 1987 and 1988. His teams posted an overall mark of 54-17, earning two third-place finishes in state tournaments.

Rahe got his first taste of coaching on the collegiate level in 1988-89, when he joined the staff at Colorado College as an assistant. He went on to serve as an assistant at the University of Colorado (1989-90) and the University of Denver (1990-91) before beginning his long association with Stew Morrill at Colorado State and Utah State.

Following Morrill to Utah State, Rahe was part of an Ag-gie staff which, in six seasons, helped the team compile a 143-48 record, winning five Big West Conference cham-pionships, earn three appearances in the NCAA Tourna-ment with a first round win over Ohio State and two NIT berths. In his last season (2003-04) at USU, the Aggies were ranked as high as 19th in the nation. From Utah State Rahe went to the University of Utah in 2004-05 where he would spend the next two seasons as an assistant coach under Ray Giacoletti. In his first season with the Utes, Utah finished 29-6, won the Mountain West Championship, and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. They were led that season by Andrew Bogut who earned Na-tional Player of the Year honors and went on to become the first pick in the 2005 NBA Draft.

Randy and his wife Laura are the parents of two sons, Luke and Kade. Laura is a women’s basketball official in the Mountain West and West Coast Conferences.

Message From the President It’s an exciting time to be a Wildcat! It’s an honor to be associated with the Weber State University Wildcat Club, a membership organization dedicated to providing athletic scholarships to Weber State University student-athletes. Currently, there are over 300 Wildcat student-athletes who will benefit for a lifetime, thanks to the generosity of the many members of the Wildcat Club.

In addition to meeting and interacting many of these athletes, I’ve also had the good fortune to watch many of them perform in their sport, but their achievements in the classroom are even more impressive. These student-athletes have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.2 while perform-ing at the high level it takes to be a college athlete. This requires a great deal of hard work and dedication.

The Wildcats continue to be recognized on a national level in many areas. We will continue that tradition with your continued help and sup-port. These student-athletes are our future. Our community has a rich

tradition of growth and prosperity as a result of Wildcat Athletics . On behalf of the many volunteers and Wildcat Club supporters, I encourage you to get involved and I thank you for your support. Go Wildcats!

ABOUT THE WILDCATS

TIP OFF The first-place Weber State Wildcats enter their final homestand of the season this week hosting Sacramento State Thursday and Northern Arizona Saturday. The Wildcats are 15-9 overall and 12-4 in Big Sky play with four conference games remaining.

AROUND THE BIG SKY Entering this weekend the Wildcats are in first place in the Big Sky standings with a 12-4 conference record. WSU has a two-game lead over Northern Colorado who is 10-6 with four conference games remaining. With two home wins this week, Weber State will clinch at least a tie for the Big Sky standings. The Wildcats will play at Portland State and Eastern Washington to conclude the season next week. Northern Colorado is home to Eastern Washington and Portland State this weekend, then closes the season next week at North Dakota and Southern Utah. There is currently a three-way tie for third in the league standings with Montana, Sac-ramento State and North Dakota all 9-7. There is a four-way tie for sixth with Portland State, Eastern Washington, Montana State and Northern Arizona all 8-8. Just two games separates third from 10th in the standings. The top seven teams will advance to the Big Sky Tournament March 13-15 at the site of the regular season champion.

BIG SKY HOME WINNING STREAK Weber State enters this weekend with a 26-game winning streak in home Big Sky Conference regular season games. The streak is a school record and is tied for the all-time Big Sky Conference record, which was snapped earlier this season. The Wildcats are 8-0 in Big Sky home games this season, finished a perfect 10-0 at home last year, and were 8-0 in 2011-12. The last conference home loss came in March 2011 against Eastern Washington. WSU has won 48 of its last 49 regular season conference home games. Over the past four seasons, the Wildcats are 55-5 overall at home. In the eight seasons under coach Randy Rahe, the ‘Cats are 103-14 at home and 62-4 at home in Big Sky regular season games.

SENIOR NIGHT FOR FOUR WILDCATS Saturday’s game will be the final regular season home game for four Weber State seniors: Davion Berry, Byron Fulton, Jordan Richardson and Kyle Tresnak. The four players have combined to play in 406 career games heading into this week.

DAVION BERRY In two years with the Wildcats, Davion Berry has played, and started, in 61 career

games entering this weekend. Last week he became the 29th player in WSU history to reach 1,000 career points. He now ranks 27th in scoring in school history with 1,018 career points and has a career scoring aver-age of 16.7 points per game. This season Berry is fourth in the Big Sky in scoring at 18.9 points per game and leads the Wildcats in assists, free throw percentage, steals and 3-pointers made. He has scored 20 or more points 15 times

this season and has done so in 10 of the last 12 games.

Jerry Bovee was named Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Weber State University in September 2009.

Since joining the Wildcats Bovee has been influential in several facility upgrades at Weber State. A new state-of-the-art Daktronics video board was installed at the Dee Events Center,

giving fans a new way to enjoy men’s and women’s basketball games. In addition, a new synthetic turf field and new track have been installed at Stewart Stadium. WSU has also re-furnished the Edmond Tennis Courts on campus.

He has also been involved in the hiring of new employees within the athletic department including a new Senior Woman’s Administrator, a new Marketing Director, as well as new volleyball and women’s basketball head coaches. He has also partnered with KP Sports for WSU’s corporate sponsorship opportunities.

Prior to being named Athletics Director, Bovee spent two years as Assistant Vice President for Administrative Support Services at Weber State. In that role he supervised operations for the Academic Services and Athletics Compliance for the Athletics Department, and directed Campus Police, Mail Services, Printing Services, Environmental Health and Safety and the Dee Events Center and Stewart Stadium operations.

Bovee assisted in the completion of the year-long NCAA re-certification process for the Wildcats serving as chief report writer and liaison to the NCAA Peer Review Team. In addition, he has supervised the initiative to improve the Academic Performance Ratings for Weber State’s 16 athletic teams.

Before coming to Weber State, Bovee served as Assistant Director of the Utah High School Activities Association. His duties included organization and management of state tournaments, coaches and officials education programs, sport rules interpretation and a myriad of other duties related to the administration and governance of sports and activities at the high school level throughout Utah. While at the UHSAA, Jerry served as vice-chair of the National Federation of State High School Associations football rules committee.

Bovee worked as Sales and Promotion Specialist and later as Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Promotions at Utah State from 1992 to 1995. In that role, he directed the corporate sales program for Aggie Athletics. In addition, he developed group and corporate ticketing plans, in-game promotions and other game management programs.

Bovee earned a bachelor’s degree in Business-Finance from Utah State University in 1992. In 2010 he earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from Weber State. He was born and raised in Ogden Utah and attended Ben Lomond High School.

Bovee and his wife Julie have four children: Jared, Ethan, Addison and Seth.

Dee Events Center

The beautiful Dee Events Center is a building of many uses, including the home for the We-ber State men’s and women’s basketball teams. The building has been home to several Big Sky Championships, NCAA Tournaments, and other basketball events, as well as numerous religious and community events.

The Dee Events Center itself has been on national display, hosting the annual NCAA Tournament on four different occasions. In 1980, the center host-ed the First and Second Rounds. In 1983 it served as the West Regional Final Site with North Caro-lina State defeating Virginia, 62-61, to advance to and eventually win the NCAA Final Four. In 1986 the Dee Events Center was once again the site of the First and Second Rounds of the tournament. That year Louisville won a pair of games in the DEC on their way to winning the national title. The building was host again to the First and Second Rounds in 1994. The arena has also been home to eight Big Sky men’s basketball tournaments and two women’s tournaments. The Utah Jazz have played 12 NBA preseason games at the DEC.

The facility was built at a cost of 11.3 million dol-lars, representing the combined efforts and co-operation of students, the university and commu-nity members for the development of a functional events facility for the greater Ogden and Weber County area. In addition to those funds provided through student fees and revenue bonds, more than five million dollars was raised from private

sources in a variety of memorialization programs. The highlight of the fund drive was the contribution of more than two million dollars from the Lawrence T. Dee and Donnell B. Stewart families.

Ground breaking ceremonies on the forty-three acre site were conducted on March 21, 1975. Dedication ceremonies were held on November 1, 1977, a little more than two and half years after construction was started. The first event in the fa-cility was a men’s basketball game on November 29, 1977, in which Weber State defeated Long Beach State, 99-96 in overtime.

The Dee Events Center can accommodate more than 12,000 spectators in chair-backed seats. The building is not just an athletic facility. The arena also hosts the WSU commencement ser-vices each year as well as a variety of campus, religious, and community events. The arena fre-quently hosts the Utah State High School Basket-ball Championships as well as numerous gradua-tion ceremonies for area high schools. The DEC has also been the home of many con-certs and other performances throughout the years. Alabama, Clint Black, the Beach Boys, Sawyer Brown, Johnny Cash, Bill Cosby, Kenny G, Chris LeDoux, Fleetwood Mac, Barry Manilow, Bette Midler, Willie Nelson, Collin Raye, LeAnn Rimes, George Strait, Taylor Swift, James Taylor, the New York Philharmonic, the Mormon Taber-nacle Choir, the Utah Symphony, and Widespread Panic are just some of the many performers to come to the Dee Events Center.

Official 2013-14 Game Program 49

Over the years, the arena has been the site of a circus, tennis and wrestling matches, gatherings by religious groups, and high school basketball championships. Neil Armstrong, Jake Garn,

Gordon B. Hinckley, Thomas S. Monson, Jon M. Huntsman, Larry Miller, Christopher Reeve, and John Wooden are just a few of the luminaries who have spoken at the facility.

A new era in the Big Sky Conference be-gins in 2012-13 as the league enters its 50th year of athletic com-petition, and its 25th sponsoring women’s collegiate athletics.

The Division I Big Sky Conference welcomes the University of North Dakota and Southern Utah University into the fold as full mem-bers. Cal Poly and UC Davis join the league

as affiliate members in football, where the league competes at the Championship Subdivision level (for-merly I-AA).

The additions of North Dakota and Southern Utah give the stable Big Sky 11 full institutions and 13 football members. The current lineup includes four of the six charter members: Idaho State University, The University of Montana, Montana State University and Weber State. Northern Arizona enters its 43rd season in the Big Sky, giving the conference five members with at least 40 years of continuous membership.

Eastern Washington University joined the Big Sky Conference in 1987, followed by Portland State Uni-versity and Sacramento State in 1996. The Big Sky became a nine-team league in 2006 with the addition of the University of Northern Colorado.

The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in the Football Championship Subdivision. Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I National Champi-onship, including Eastern Washington in 2010. A Big Sky team has played for the national championship in three of the past four seasons.

The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington.

The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference add-ed Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001.

The Big Sky now includes nine states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Red River Valley of North Dakota. The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Mon-tana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado.

On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference. The name Big Sky origi-nated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State. While on a track and field trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont., legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana. Holt, and his athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new conference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963.

The Big Sky sponsors championships in 15 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are also championships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer. This upcoming spring, the Big Sky will sponsor a softball champion-ship for the first time.

In 1988-89, the Big Sky Conference first began spon-soring women’s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring cham-pionships for women’s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women.

Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, is in his 18th year at the helm. Fuller-ton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commissioner Ron Stephenson, who passed away in 2011. Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning held the post from 1971-77. The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served from 1963-71.
