New Team, Same Dream 5

Entering its 64th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. For only the second time in a decade, the Conference expanded by adding Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the league’s 11th member in 2008. The move expanded the OVC’s geographical footprint to the St. Louis market and marked the first change in membership since expanding to the state of Alabama (Jacksonville State, Samford) in 2003. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences. The OVC’s proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions com-bined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league mem-ber Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961, Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans.

A first in the OVC occurred in 2008, when the league had a first round draft pick in both the NFL (Tennessee State’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) and Major League Baseball (Eastern Kentucky’s Christian Friedrich) Drafts in the same school year. The OVC sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Mis-souri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Tennessee State has been a member of the Ohio Valley Conference since 1986.

Founded in 1912, Tennessee State University has grown dramatically from a small college to two campuses: the 500-acre main campus and the downtown Avon Williams campus which is located in the heart of Nashville near the State capitol.

The diverse student population of more than 8,000 represents 46 states and 45 countries. TSU has been listed for 11 consecutive years in the U.S. News & World Report “Guide to America’s Best Colleges.”

Tennessee State University is a comprehensive, urban, coeducational land-grant university offering 45 bachelor degrees and 24 master’s degrees. Doctoral programs include biological sciences, psychology, public administra-tion, computer information systems engineering, administration and supervision, and curriculum and instruction. When you think about Tennessee State University, many things come to mind – a rich heritage and legacy in ath-letics, academics, entertainment, research and service.

Tennessee State University has long been a rising star among universities across the country. It is designated as one of the best public historically black colleges and universities in the nation, and it’s not by accident.

Tennessee State University is among the few historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) with a chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the oldest and largest freshman honor society in the United States and a Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the most prestigious honor society comprising all academic disciplines.

A great deal of focus has been given to improving the academic environment – strengthening our research repu-tation, attracting and retaining the best and brightest students, encouraging service-focused programs, engaging and supporting expert faculty in diverse fields, building on our student-centered philosophy and holding steadfast to our motto of “Think. Work. Serve.”

There are more than 400 faculty and more than 1,200 staff who are part of the university’s team.

Additionally, the university’s rich strength in embracing diversity is ev-ident with 45 countries and 46 states representative of the student body.

The beauty and accessibility of the uni-versity’s main campus is a plus with now 65 buildings on more than 450 acres.

Complimenting the main campus is a newly renovated downtown campus that features a simulated stock-trading center, a student computer laborato-ry and continuing education, distance learning and multimedia services.

The university is arming students with the intellectual resources to compete in a global environment. In support of that, important partnerships have been established with leading global compa-nies such as Boeing, Raytheon, Dell, IBM and others, in which both funding and service-learning opportunities are currently active.

KEAN HALL, a simplified Art Deco style gymnasium erected in 1951 at a cost of $1,500,000 was dedicat-ed Wednesday, November 25, 1953.

The structure is located on the south side of the campus at John Merritt Boulevard and 33rd Avenue, North and is named after former TSU Football head coach and Athletic Director, Henry A. Kean.

The building contained at the time of its construc-tion: a gymnasium, health, physical education and recreation classrooms, laboratories, staff offices, and facilities for indoor intramural sports, staff and student recreation and physical therapy. The build-ing was vacated in 1980 when the HPER moved to the new Gentry Center Complex.

The $300,000 renovation, approved in 1986-1987, connected the building to the Floyd-Payne campus center in 1991. The building became a recreational facility for the general campus population. It also serves as the headquarters for the Air Force ROTC, TSU Athletics and the academic and Hall of Fame.

The PERFORMING ARTS CENTER is located adjacent to the east side of the existing Strange Music Building. The facility houses the Theater, Television, Radio and Music Departments and includes a complete renovation of the Strange Music Building.

A performance theater seating for 400 was constructed as part of the new building. Theater department spaces include classrooms, support spaces and offices. Rehears-al and production facilities are provided for television and radio departments, as well as offices and support areas.

The music department has new laboratory facilities, practice rooms, classrooms, offic-es and an expanded band practice room and support facilities. The project included ap-proximately 30,400 sq. ft. of renovated space (the Strange Music Building) and 43,000 sq. ft. of new construction.

The DAVIS BUILDING is topped by its landmark cupola and houses the Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy and the Thomas E. Poag Auditorium. The building, which once housed the administrative offices, is named after TSU’s second president Dr. Walter S. Davis.

The FLOYD-PAYNE CAMPUS CENTER contains various student and administrative offices, campus bookstore, post office, and dining services. The Center is named after former TSU student and fifth president, Otis L. Floyd, and long-time Dean of Students and Vice-President of Student Affairs, Joseph A. Payne.

The AVERITTE AMPHITHEATER located in the center of campus; landscaped and has permanent seating for 200. The structure is named after Laura M. Averitte, author of Tennessee State Universi-ty’s alma mater.

The BROWN-DANIEL LIBRARY was erected in 1976 and opened for service during the summer of 1977.

This present structure has 82,000 square feet of space with special study and research facilities for faculty and graduate students, and a Special Collections Room which houses the University’s histori-cal archives, theses, dissertations, and other special materials. The library is named in memory of Library Directors, Martha M. Brown and Lois H. Daniel.

PHILLIPS

Teresa Lawrence-Phillips became head of the Tennessee State University athletics department in April of 2002. As director, the athletic department has made tremendous strides on the playing field, campus, com-munity and classroom.

Some accomplishments under the Phillips’ administration include the launching of the first official website for TSU Athletics in Au-gust of 2002, the revitalization of the Big Blue Booster Club, the recognition of Ohio Valley Conference Scholar Athletes, and conference championships in volleyball, women’s track including a PGA minority na-tional championship in men’s golf.

Phillips also has the distinction of being the first woman ever to coach an NCAA Divi-sion I men’s basketball team en route to be-ing named one of the “101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports” by Sports Illustrated in 2003.

She was also named as the Second Most Influential Woman in Sports in Tennessee by The Tennessean newspaper. In addi-tion, she was named USA Today’s National Coach of the Year in 1990 and was a three-time OVC Coach of the Year selection.

No stranger to athletic success, she was head coach of the Lady Tigers basketball program at TSU for 11 seasons from 1989-2000. Phillips guided the 1993–94 squad to the program’s first-ever OVC regular season crown, the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship, and the team’s first appearance ever in the NCAA tourna-ment.

Phillips and her staff enjoyed their most

successful season in 1994–95 as the Lady Tigers (22–7, 12–4 OVC) shared the reg-ular season title. TSU claimed its second consecutive tournament title and a trip to the NCAA tournament.

She has been invited twice to serve as an assistant coach for USA Basketball (1995 and 1999) and was invited to serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Festi-val North Squad.

Prior to her stint at TSU, Phillips was head coach at Fisk University for four years. She guided the Bulldogs to WIAC League and Tournament Championships in 1987 and 1988 and was tabbed WIAC Coach of the Year twice (1987, 1988). She compiled a 68-34 overall record with the Bulldogs. She graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor’s degree in Economics be-fore obtaining a Masters in Education from TSU in 1999. Phillips, who helped recruit six All-Americans and seven All-State play-ers, served as an assistant coach with the Lady Commodores (1981-1984) winning the N.I.T. in 1983.

Phillips earned several honors as a three-

year letter winner at Vanderbilt. She was the first recipient of the Lady Commodore Athlete of the Year honor, given to the best all-around female athlete. In addition, she received the Nashville Civitan’s Sportsman-ship Award in 1979 and 1980.

New Team, Same Dream 13

Coming off a stellar first season at the helm of the Tennessee State men’s basketball program, Travis Williams is looking to build the Ti-gers into a consistent OVC threat year-in and year-out.

The Tigers are coming off a 18-15 season, finishing third in the OVC East division with an 11-5 confer-ence record.

Williams’ undeniable team leader will be All-OVC point guard Pat-rick Miller who will now be the Ti-gers most experienced player on a young team.

“When you look at a point guard that’s usually the most important position on the court and to have that caliber of player returning his senior year is going to be a tremen-dous asset for our team,” Williams said of his veteran floor general.

The senior point guard is a poten-tial OVC player of the year candi-

date who returns to the reigns of an offense that will rely on a lot of newcomers to shoulder heavy production losses. Miller aver-aged 14.8 points, 5.9 assists per game as well as recording a 1.7 as-sist-to-turnover ratio. The Chicago native’s junior season will go down as one of the best for a point guard at TSU after Miller set the single season assist mark with 195.

Miller’s record breaking junior sea-son earned him a spot on the All-OVC first team. The 6-1 guard en-

ters the season as just one of two holdovers from the ’12-’13 All-OVC first and second teams and the only member of the first team to return.

Coach Williams is now asking his savvy point guard to focus even more attention to another aspect of his game.

“He’s been able to show a lot of leadership in helping the younger guys along but I think he’s welcom-ing the challenge,” said Williams on Miller’s vocal role on this year’s team. “I want him to have more of a voice this year to develop the makeup of this team. He’s been thrust into that role and I think he’s looking forward to that challenge.”

The supporting cast around Mill-er will be a more youthful unit than the senior is used to with the loss of All-OVC second team members Robert Covington and Kellen Thornton as well as Jordan Cyphers and Tashan Frederick to graduation. Overall the Tigers will be replacing 62.2% of their scoring and 44.5 points per game.

2013-14 Season Outlook

Page 14: 2013-14 TSU Men's Basketball Media Guide

2013-14 Tennessee State Men’s Basketball Team Guide

14 New Team, Same Dream

Coach Travis Williams will turn to both a combination of veteran tal-ent and youthful newcomers to pace the 2013-14 Tigers.

Junior M.J. Rhett will pace the Tigers in the post after a strong sophomore campaign averaging 5.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Rhett’s most impressive performances came at the beginning of 2013, recording back-to-back double-doubles in wins over OVC rivals Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State. The perfor-mances earned Rhett the accolade of OVC player of the week for Jan. 7.

Seniors Michael Green and Chaed Wiellian will join Rhett in the front-court. Both served in reserve roles off the bench backing up the solid performing Thornton and Coving-ton. The two are in line for more playing time this season filling the void left by the former Tigers.

Green averaged 3.2 points and 2.2

rebounds a game off the bench for TSU a year ago.

The guard position will have wel-comed depth for Coach Williams’ team with Miller, junior Jay Harris, sophomore Jordan Gaither and the return of Jacquan Nobles. Harris spent last year as a reserve playing behind Miller. During Harris’ soph-omore season the Philadelphia na-tive averaged 3.2 points, 1.1 assists and 1.2 rebounds per game. Harris was a key defender off the bench for the Tigers a season ago.

Nobles rejoins the TSU roster af-ter spending the past two seasons away from basketball. The 6-3 guard began his career for Tennessee State in 2009 earning a spot on the OVC All-Newcomer team after averaging 11.2 points per game while shoot-ing 44% from the field. During his second season in Nashville, Nobles led the team with 59 three pointers made while averaging 7.5 points

per game.

“I’ve always been impressed with his ability to shoot the basketball. To get him back in the fold after a num-ber of years is going to be able to help this team,” said Willimas about his senior sharpshooter. “He’s got to come in and prove himself; nothing is going to be given to him.”

Williams will also welcome his first full recruiting class after being named the head coach in 2012. The class includes four freshman and two Junior College transfers.

The freshman class is highlighted by the addition of Ugo Mmonu, a wiry 6-7 combo guard from Decatur, Ga. “I think he’s an incredible talent, his best basketball is ahead of him. He has incredible versatility with the ability to play inside-and-out from multiple positions,” Williams said of the newcomer.

Mmonu is joined by fellow fresh-men Jamonte Green, Jaylen Reid and Rhyan Townes.

Reid is a 6-7 forward who can also play the small forward position and should battle for minutes in the post.

Green and Townes will provide vi-able depth in the backcourt while gaining valuable experience learn-ing from Miller.

Travis Williams was named the 16th head coach for the Tigers men’s basketball program on April 13, 2012.

During his first season at the helm of the Tigers, Williams led his team to an 18-15 record and berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. He also coached Patrick Miller, Kellen Thornton and Robert Covington to all-conference teams. Covington later earned an NBA contract under Williams’s tute-lage.

Williams, a native of Tifton, Ga., served as an assistant for previous TSU head coach John Cooper from 2009-2012. Cooper left on April 6 after accepting the head coaching position at Miami (Ohio).

Williams helped restore a winning attitude to the Tigers’ program. The Big Blue recorded just nine wins in 2009-10, while improving to 14 victories in 2010-11. In his last season as an assistant coach, the Tigers completed a 20-13 mark - the most for any TSU program since 1978-79. It also marked the school’s first winning season in 16 years.

As the first assistant, Williams was involved with every aspect of the program. His major priority was the recruitment and development of student-athletes, both academ-ically and athletically. Williams helped with practice, game day strategies, assignments and scout-ing reports. He also maintained day-to-day operations. Williams worked with student-athletes in-dividually, while scheduling prac-tice and workout sessions. He co-ordinated all community service initiatives and served as the team’s academic liaison.

When he joined the Tigers in the summer of 2009, Williams brought 10 years of coaching experience as an assistant and head coach.

This marks Williams’ third time taking the reins of a basketball program. Williams served as head coach of the Dongguan Parklane Snow Wolf Professional Basketball Club in China’s National Basketball

League (NBL). He led the team to an 11-2 preseason record before leav-ing prior to the 2009 regular season. Williams was hired by the Dongguan Snow Wolf to develop the game of basketball in China directly after the 2008 Olympics. He facilitated play-er development, conditioning and game day strategies.

In 2004, Williams received his first head coach appointment at Fort Valley State University in Georgia. He led the Wildcats to a pair of win-ning seasons during his tenure. Wil-liams guided FVSU to an 18-12 re-cord during the 2006-07 campaign. At the conclusion of the season, the Wildcats ranked 10th in the Division II South Region poll, making it to the Southern Intercollegiate Athlet-ic Conference (SIAC) Championship game. FVSU’s 18 wins were the most since the 1998-99 season.

After a three-season stint at FVSU, Williams served as an assistant for one season at Mercer University (2007-08). That season, Mercer defeated No.17 ranked University of Southern California.

Williams’ coaching resume includes stops as an associate head coach with the Southern Crescent Lightning of the World Basketball Association (2004) and an assistant position at Chicago State (2003-2004).

From 1999-2003 he served as assistant at his alma mater Georgia State. During his tenure with the Panthers, the program produced three conference regular season championships and one conference tournament championship. While at GSU, the Panthers defeat-ed two Top-25 teams (No.15 St. Josephs and No.23 Georgia) and produced an upset over No. 6 seed Wisconsin in the 2001 NCAA Tournament marking the first 20-win season in school history, finishing 29-5.

Williams hosted “In the Loop”, an all-access cable sports show covering all levels of athletics throughout central Georgia. He has also served as a motivational speaker and educational consultant with his “If You Believe, You Can Achieve” Power Hour series.

Williams is currently a member of National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Black Coaches and Adminis-trators Association (BCAA). As a player, he scored more than 1,000 career points at GSU. He graduated with a Bachelor’s in business management in 1995 and a Master’s in Sports Administration in 1999. While in college at GSU, Williams in-terned with the National Football League (NFL) Players Asso-ciation as a research intern.

He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. and the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Nashville. Williams is married to Nikkya Wil-liams. The two celebrated the birth of their daughter Teagan Loure’ Ann in Nov. of 2011 and Travis Jr. in Feb. of 2012.

GENTRY CENTERGentry Complex is a multi-purpose arena on the campus of Tennessee State University.

The arena opened in 1980. It is home to the TSU basketball teams. This facility was built in 1980 and named for Howard C. Gentry, Sr., who, during a 27 year span, served as a prominent professor, coach and athletic director at TSU.

The facility houses the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and has a basketball arena, dance studio, indoor track, indoor Olympic pool, (4) racquetball courts, and a training and weight room. It has a seating capacity of 10,500.

The McLendon Court was named in honor of TSU and legendary Basketball Hall of Fame head coach John B. McClendon.

The court was dedicated in 1992 when the Tigers hosted Eastern Kentucky.

JOHN McLENDON

John B. McLendon, Jr. (April 15, 1915 – October 8, 1999) is noted as one of the most successful high school and college coaches in the sport of basketball.

McLendon coached at schools such as Tennessee State A&I University North Carolina College, the Hampton Institute, TKentucky State College, and Cleveland State University.

While at North Carolina College, McLendon participat-ed in The Secret Game, the first collegiate basketball contest where blacks and whites competed on the same floor.

He was a three-time winner of the NAIA Coach of the Year award, and won three consecutive NAIA champi-onships at Tennessee State, making him the first col-lege basketball coach ever to have won three consec-utive national titles. When he was hired at Cleveland State in 1966, he became the first African American basketball coach ever at a predominantly white uni-versity.

McLendon also coached professionally, when Cleve-land Pipers General Manager, Mike Cleary hired him to be the head coach of the American Basketball League team which was owned by George Steinbrenner. Mc-Lendon’s hiring made history, as he became the first African-American head coach in professional sports. In his, and the Pipers, only season in the league, the team captured the league championship. McLendon later went on to coach the American Basketball Asso-ciation’s Denver Rockets.

McLendon was first inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a “contributor”, not as a coach. He was, how-ever, selected in 2007 for the second entering class of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame for his coaching achievements. He was also inducted into the Tennessee State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Cleveland State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007, where his wife Joanna accepted the award on his behalf.

From 1968-1985, Coach Martin tallied a re-cord of 108-118 finishing .500 or above in 15 seasons.

He also coached at South Carolina State and while finishing his coaching career with 508 wins.

A respected man throughout the entire Nashville community, Martin also contribut-ed to Vanderbilt University as a leader in the school's Human and Organization Develop-ment program to help the community.

He was named associated professor of hu-man development at Peabody in 1989. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 75 and is still remembered as one of Nashville's great-est public citizens.
