WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NCAA STATISTICAL LEADERS (Top 35) - FINAL STATS

Winter DominanceWKU has been pretty dominate during the months of November and December posting a 6-2 and 7-1 mark in Michelle Clark-Heard’s first year on the hill.

Offensive ProwessWith 87 points in the win over Southeastern Louisiana, UL-Monroe has now scored 80 or more points in two consecutive games for the first time since defeating Northwestern State (81-68) and Centenary (87-68) during the 2010-11 season. The Warhawks are quickly approaching another milestone victory in program history. After capturing its 300th home win inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum against Louisiana College, UL-Monroe is just two victories away from its 500th win at the Division I level. The Warhawks have a 498-399 (.555) record since moving up from the AIAW ranks prior to the 1982-83 season.

Troy Forcing TurnoversTroy has forced 25-plus turnovers in three straight games for the first time since the 2000-01 season when the Trojans did so in four straight games. The Trojans lead the league forcing 29.7 opponent turnovers per game. They are also averaging 30.3 points per game off of those turnovers.

Home Court AdvantageSince the Jack Stephens Center opened for the start of the 2005-06 season, the Trojans are an incredible 101-20 in their home building, good for a winning percentage of .835. UALR is also 58-11 in conference games at the JSC, making them an even-better .841 in league games. The Trojans’ overall winning percentage at the Jack Stephens Center puts that building just outside the top 10 toughest places to play in the country. Maryland’s Comcast Center, the 10th-hardest place to play in the country, had a .839 winning percentage entering the year.

Successful Opener for CajunsThe Ragin’ Cajuns have won four of their last five season openers after defeating Nebraska Omaha on Friday. They defeated Southern in 2012, LSU-Shreveport in 2010 and Texas Southern in 2009. The Cajuns won their first two games last season, also defeating LSU-Shreveport to start the season.

Seeing Double-DoubleBoth Jasmin Mills and Ashley Benjamin posted double-doubles in the Ragin’ Cajuns season opener, marking the first game in which two Ragin’ Cajuns had double-doubles in the Garry Brodhead era. Mills scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Benjamin scored 15 points, picking up 14 rebounds.

Three is the KeyIn its opening game (an 84-80 loss at UT Martin), Georgia State tied its school record by making 11 3-point baskets. GSU shot 45.8% outside the arc on the 11-of-24. The sharp Panthers shot 49.1% from the field for the game (26-of-53) after a 54.2% first half.

Short But EffectiveGeorgia State transfer point guard Alisha Andrews (UNCW) made her GSU debut as the smallest player in the NCAA at 4-foot-11. The junior scored 14 points (4-of-8 3-pointers), while leading the team with six assists. She had a blocked shot and a steal on defense.

New Faces, Veteran Leadership in San MarcosTexas State welcomes seven new faces to the 2013-14 lineup. These include four freshman, a redshirt sophomore, a redshirt junior and a transfer junior while the Bobcats return four of their five starters from last year, including Preseason Second Team All-Conference selection, senior Ashley Ezeh.

A-State Returning Offensive WeaponsThe Arkansas State Red Wolves return the bulk of its scoring from last year including Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection Jane Morrill who led the squad with 14.3 points per contest. Jalen O’Bannon grabbed preseason third team honors after averaging in double-figures during conference play.

UL-Monroe Places Two on Preseason All-Conference Teams; Warhawks Picked to Finish FifthAshleigh Simmons and Alexar Tugler were each named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt team, marking the first time that UL-M has had two athletes honored in the preseason voting since joining the league. The Warhawks were also picked in a tie for fifth in the preseason poll, their highest mark since becoming a Sun Belt member.

SUN BELT WOMEN’S BASKETBALLTEAM-by-TEAM NOTES

UALR TrojansThe hallmark of the UALR program over the last few years has been defense, and that has shown against Southern Miss in their last five contests. The Trojans have allowed just 221 points in those five games, an average of 44.2 per game, and hold a 4-1 record in those contests. The Trojans have allowed more than 70 points to the Golden Eagles just once, in 2004. Last year, Southern Miss shot 28.3 percent from the field in a 19-point loss. Sophomore Shanity James is on a scoring roll right now, as she has recorded double figures in score in her last eight games. She had six consecutive games with 10 or more points at the end of last season, and she has scored 12 and 13 points in this season’s games. Her high total during this streak is 19 at Pacific in the WNIT in March. Junior Taylor Gault has a similar streak, recording double digits in nine of her last 10 games. The lone game missing from that run was the regular-season finale last year against Arkansas State where she only played five minutes. UALR had four players – all starters – foul out at Missouri State on Wednesday night. In Joe Foley’s entire 11-year career at UALR, he had never seen four of his players foul out in a single game. Only twice in all of last year did UALR have more than one player foul out. The team as a whole committed 29 fouls against the Lady Bears, and the 2012-13 single-game season-high for fouls was 25 at ULM. The Trojans have not had more than 29 fouls in a game since November 2002 when it committed 33 against Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Arkansas State Red WolvesThe Arkansas State women’s basketball continued its hot start to the 2013-14 season with a 79-69 victory over Austin Peay Friday, Nov. 15. Jane Morrill led the Red Wolves in scoring with 22 points as the squad erased a 10 point second half deficit to remain as the only undefeated in the SBC. Through its first two regular season games, A-State has had four players reach double-digit point in each game. Jalen O’Bannon, Jane Morrill, Hanna Qedan and Aundrea Gamble have scored at least 10 points in both of the Red Wolves games. Including exhibition games this season, A-State has scored 79 points in each of its four games. The Red Wolves return to action Tuesday, Nov. 19 for a home matchup with UT Martin.

Georgia State PanthersGeorgia State will play its home opener on Tuesday against unbeaten UCF (3-0), then travel to Western Carolina on Saturday. The Panthers started 0-3 on the road in the Preseason WNIT, starting by losing by four points to 24-win UT Martin after 14 ties and then ending by losing by six points to Stephen F. Austin after leading the first 39 minutes of game and seeing the host Lumberjacks take their first lead with 48 seconds left. With the new touch rules in effect by the NCAA, the referees whistled the teams for 51 fouls in game one (26 on GSU and 25 on UT Martin). GSU had one player foul out and three starters with four fouls. Game two with A&T saw 46 whistles (26 on A&T and 20 on GSU). Game three vs. SFA saw a season-high 57 fouls, 36 on GSU and 21 on SFA with two Panthers fouling out. That’s 154 fouls called in three games, an average 51.3 fouls per game. GSU has been whistled for 82 fouls (27.3 per game). GSU has had a different player lead the team in scoring in all three games (Kendra Long, Brittany Logan and Kayla Nolan). The Panthers and Knights will battle Tuesday for the 43rd time in a series that dates back to 1980. Georgia State has built a commanding 31-11 series lead. These two teams met last year in the season opener at UCF in Orlando and Georgia State left town with a 64-50 victory. Six GSU players will make their home debuts Tuesday. Kendra Long scored her 900th career point last week and adds to her school-record 3-point total with 168 made…The Panthers netted 80% from the free throw line Saturday, making 16-of-20 attempts.

UL-Lafayette Ragin’ CajunsThe Ragin’ Cajuns take on Lamar for the fourth game in Garry Brodhead’s second season at UL-Lafayette. The Cajuns are 2-1 in the young season, falling to Sam Houston State in their last time out. UL-Lafayette is led by sophomore guard Keke Veal (15.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg), forward Jasmin Mills (12.7 ppg, 9.3 rpg) and senior forward Ashley Benjamin (11.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg). The Cardinals of Lamar are led by three players averaging over 10 points, Dominique Edwards (16.8), Shauna Long (14.5) and Gia Ayers (10.5). This is the 60th all-time meeting between the former conference foes, with Lamar holding the all-time series lead 39-20. In all three games so far this season, the Ragin’ Cajuns have had four players score double-digit point totals. Keke Veal is the only player to score over ten points in each game, averaging 15.7 points per game thus far, scoring 15 points in the first two games and 17 against Sam Houston State. Ashley Benjamin (UNO, SHSU), Jasmin Mills (UNO, SUNO) and Sylvana Okde (UNO, SHSU) have all notched double-digit points twice, and Gabby Alexander (SUNO), Brooklyn Arceneaux (SUNO) and Jaylyn Gordon (SHSU) have all done so once. UL-Lafayette will take to the road again to take on Jackson State in Jackson, Miss., on Monday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. The Cajuns and Tigers have split the all-time series at one game each, with Louisiana winning 68-57 in the last meeting, on Dec. 10, 2012. Jackson State won the first ever meeting, 67-51 on Nov. 29, 1991 in Hattiesburg, Miss., at the USM Lady Eagle Classic. This will be the first ever meeting between the schools in Jackson.

UL-Monroe WarhawksWith 87 points in the win over Southeastern Louisiana, UL-Monore has now scored 80 or more points in two consecutive games for the first time since defeating Northwestern State (81-68) and Centenary (87-68) during the 2010-11 season. UL-Monore’s 92 points against Louisiana College were also the most for the Warhawks since defeating New Orleans by a 97-30 margin to kick off the 2010-11 year. The Warhawks are quickly approaching another milestone victory in program history. After capturing its 300th home win inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum against Louisiana College, UL-Monore is just two victories away from its 500th win at the Division I level. The Warhawks have a 498-399 (.555) record since moving up from the AIAW ranks prior to the 1982-83 season. UL-Monore has improved its shooting by a full five percent from last season (.394 to .444) and currently has four players shooting 50 percent or better, led by Sharnice Brooks (19-of-27, .704) and Ashleigh Simmons (18-of-29, .621). Brooks continues to star for UL-Monore as she put up career-high marks in points (22) and rebounds (nine) in the win over Southeastern Louisiana. Brooks is the leading scorer (15.3) and rebounder (8.0) for the Warhawks so far this season. Brooks also connected on 34 field goals in all of 2012-13; in just three games to start 2013-14, the junior has already drained 19 shots. Alexar Tugler set a new career high in the assists department against the Lady Lions, tallying nine dimes to top her previous high mark of eight that was set at Troy last season. As a team, UL-Monore is averaging 19 offensive boards per game after totaling just 13.6 in that category during the 2012-13 season. Alexar Tugler (nine), Brooks (eight), Simmons (six) and Aleesha Coulter (six) lead the team on the offensive glass. UL-Monore will face another Southland foe this week as the Warhawks travel to Conway, Ark., to take on Central Arkansas on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. The squad will be seeking the program’s first victory over the Sugar Bears after falling against them in the last two seasons.

South Alabama JaguarsIn its lone game at Southern Miss this past week, South Alabama fell 93-68 to the Golden Eagles. With the loss, South Alabama drops to 15-12 in the all-time series and 3-11 in Hattiesburg. USA is also now 74-122 versus current Conference USA opponents. Sophomores Sharon Sanders (guard) and Taylor Jenkins (forward) made their first collegiate starts for the Jags at Southern Miss. Ronneka Robertson and Meghan Dunn each recorded 18 points off the bench for the Jaguars. The 18 points by Robertson were a new career high for the senior forward, with 15 of them coming in the second half. Most of Robertson’s second-half points came as USA rallied back and and cut the USM lead to four. During the run, Robertson scored 11 of USA’s 12 points at one point. Breanna Hall (13) and Rachel Cumbo (10) also notched new career best versus Southern Miss. USA cut the deficit to 64-60 with nine minutes to go, but over the next seven minutes, the Jags went 0-for-10 from the field and committed five turnovers during that span, as Southern Miss went on a 19-0 run. Southern Miss took advantage of 25 South Alabama turnovers, converting those miscues into 39 points. USM also held a 56-26 advantage in the points in the paint category. The 93 points scored by Southern Miss were the most recorded by the Golden Eagles in the series since scoring 91 in a game versus the Jags during the 1997-98 season. Prior to the game versus Southern Miss, senior forward Jennifer Johnson was suspended indefinitely from the team.

UT Arlington MavericksUT Arlington is still searching for its first win after a 4-0 start to the season. The Mavericks travel to Norman, Okla. to face No. 11 Oklahoma Wednesday before hosting VCU Sunday at College Park Center at 1 p.m. Senior Laila Suleiman scored a UTA career-high 20 points against the UTSA Roadrunners last weekend. Senior Briana Walker continues as the Mavericks leading scorer, averaging 15 points per game.

Texas State BobcatsTexas State finished last week with an 0-2 record, falling to Texas and TCU in Big 12 action. Kileah Mays recorded her first double-double of the season against TCU with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kaylan Martin was the leading scorer in both contests for the Bobcats, tallying 10 points against the Longhorns and 13 points against TCU. Also in the TCU game, Martin led the Bobcats in assists with four, steals with three, and minutes with 32. She finished the game going 3-for-6 beyond the arc. The Bobcats will take the week off to prepare for a game against the Hampton Pirates on Saturday, November 23.

Troy TrojansTroy (2-1) dropped its first game of the season, falling to Tennessee State at Trojan Arena, 77-71. The game was close throughout, but TSU used a 19-3 run late to take a 14-point lead before holding on for the win. Despite the loss, the Trojans forced 30 TSU turnovers and scored 28 points off of them. The Trojans are leading the Sun Belt, forcing 29.7 opponent turnovers per game. Troy is averaging 30.3 points per game off of turnovers while opponents are averaging 13.0. Troy has forced 25-plus turnovers in three straight games for the first time since the 2000-01 season when the Trojans did so in four straight games. The Trojans are also leading the league in scoring at 82.7 points per game. Troy has scored at least 70 points in three straight games, a feat the Trojans accomplished three times last season on their way to leading the Sun Belt in scoring. Most of Troy’s scoring has come from its pair of All-Sun Belt guards. Joanna Harden (19.3 ppg) and Ashley Beverly-Kelley (16.0 ppg) enter the third week of the season as the top scoring backcourt in the league. Troy plays just one game this week, traveling to Mercer on Tuesday night. The Trojans then return home to host four straight beginning next Tuesday with Alabama-Huntsville. The homestand contunes with Jacksonville, Florida and Evansville.
