Exceptional Learners include both high ability and students with special needs. Center Grove is committed to improving the curricular offerings in order to maximize the achievements of both groups.

• Special Services has received an INSPIRE grant and is partnering with Franklin College to provide appropriate curriculum and opportunities for students ages 18-22.

World Languages

• Additional experiences with world cultures and languages help to prepare students for their futures and increases their challenge in the curriculum. Center Grove is committed to expanding world language offerings at the middle school level and more cultural experiences within the elementary programming.

Offer parent pay “language club” through Middlebury$75 per student

Request Board permission to post and hire 1 instructional assistant for 2013-14($16,000)

Pilot: Middlebury 3-5 language and culture curriculum software. Done through specials rotation with assistant overseeing. Students work at own pace. No grade – participation only. 1 school only. Collect parent and teacher feedback. Input from pilot will determine if this meets CG needs. If desired, bring materials to Board for adoption. 

Fully implement 3-5 program. Uses computer-based curriculum with

assistants.Costs: Middlebury Software (instructional material

cost to parents in book fees) Instructional assistants ($16,000 each / 4

additional = $64,000

Review 3-5 program and make changes as needed.

 

  Cost: $16,000 assistant + $15,500 software = 31,500

Cost: $64,000 (4 assistants) school Software cost will be in book rental

Present various option to Board for a Middle School World Language program.

Bring recommendations to Board. Request addition of 3 Spanish teachers for the middle school.

Begin curriculum development planning with teachers.

Costs: 152,750 x 3 = 158,250

Begin implementation of 6-8 Introductory World Language and Culture Course and increase number of sections of 8th grade Spanish I for credit.

 Review program for revisions if needed.

Discuss accepting World Language credits from IOA or other state-accredited course in languages not offered at Center Grove High School (currently: Latin, Chinese, American Sign Language, etc.) Survey parents/community for new World Language preference

Approve accepting World Language credits from IOA or other state-accredited course in languages not offered at Center Grove High School (currently: Latin, Chinese, American Sign Language, etc.) Consider split to honors and standard world language paths at the high school. Costs: hire new World Language teacher (52,750) World Language textbook adoption (becomes student/parent cost in instructional materials)

13Recommendation

• Expand the elementary World Language program from the pilot at Maple Grove Elementary to all elementary schools in grades 3-4-5 for 2014-15 [addition of four assistants].

• Expand the middle school World Language program to include Spanish language and culture in grades 6 and 7 and Spanish I and preparation for Spanish I in grade 8 [hire 3 Spanish teachers].

14FAQs

• Indiana Health Standards in grades 6-7-8 include nutrition, personal care and fitness standards.

• School districts are required to provide 2 of 3 possible exploratory experiences in Middle School to include FACS, Business/Computers/IT and/or Industrial Technology.

• 2013 standards are written so that finance and career standards are available in all three of the offerings.

• Computer/Business class (exploratory) is placed in the 8 th grade core for all students and curriculum includes Indiana Finance Standards for Middle School.

• Center Grove offers a robust high school FACS program to all students and opportunities for well-developed elective courses in any area of FACS interest or need.

• High school engineering and technology courses focus on PLTW, pre-engineering and C9 courses.
