SCHOOL-TIME PERFORMANCESSchool-Time Performances are high-quality, professional live performance for Maine’s

students. We select artists and ensembles from around the world who bring fresh,

innovative and diverse performances to our community. Performances, study guides,

and in-school workshops all seek to complement existing curriculum and promote arts

integration in our schools, communities, and alternative learning spaces.

All tickets are $8 and may be purchased by any public, private, or home school.

For the first time this season, we’re offering a special $13 ticket price that includes

admission to one School-Time Performance plus a 1-hour in-class workshop with

Ovations Offstage educators, limited availability. Complete a reservation form and

mail, email, or phone to register.

We start the season with Potted Potter, a parody of the Harry Potter books and end

with Nearly Lear, an incredible retelling of King Lear – in between there is something

for everyone. We look forward to working with you to plan your visit and workshops

for the 2013-2014 season.

laughter – even if you don’t know the difference between a horcrux and a Hufflepuff.

After a sell-out performance last season, American Place Theatre returns with The Giver.

In this solo performance, Lois Lowry’s Newbery Medal-winning novel and its utopian

society is brought to life. Twelve-year-old Jonas is chosen to be his community’s new

“Receiver of Memories” and while under the Giver’s mentorship he discovers the buried

truth about his world. Limited seating provides an intimate setting for interactive pre-

and post-performance discussions that encourage audiences to examine their own

values and beliefs.

Virtuoso violinists Wil B and Kev Marcus meld highbrow and pop culture through a

fusion of classical, jazz, hip-hop, blues and R&B. Joining the classically trained violinists

is DJ TK on turntables and together the trio smashes musical stereotypes and enthralls

lovers of Bach and Beyoncé. Wil B. explains, “We encourage kids to think creatively, to

take what they love doing and try to come up with something no one has ever done

before. And that doesn’t just apply to playing violin or even music, but whatever it is

blast from an original comic book onto our two-story video screen! Join the fun as

Pulitzer-winning reporter Molly Sloan and her intrepid assistant Timmy grapple with

With an ensemble of singers ranging from 7 to 10 years old, the African Children’s

Choir has been celebrating the music and dance of Africa for over 25 years. The choir

members represent many nations and demonstrate the potential of African children to

become strong leaders for a better future. Their joyful performance blends song and

dance from the entire continent of Africa featuring more than ten languages, dance,

traditional spiritual music, and well-loved children’s songs.

Michael Rosen’s award-winning book We’re Going On A Bear Hunt is brought vividly

and rambunctiously to the stage in director Sally Cookson’s fun-filled adaptation set to

Benji Bower’s versatile, lively score. Join our intrepid adventurers on their quest to find

a bear; as they wade through the gigantic swishy swashy grass, the splishy splashy river

and the thick oozy, squelchy mud! A performance filled with catchy songs, interactive

scenes and plenty of hands-on adventure – plus a few special surprises!

What if the great story of King Lear was told by his closest companion? In this

one-woman tour de force, actress Susanna Hamnett plays the Fool—and every other

character—to tell a very personal and poignant story that borrows from the words of

“that guy William Shakespeare.” Braving the most savage storm in English literature

with breathtaking hilarity and heartache, she honors the beautiful language of Lear

while taking a bit of poetic license. Co-created by Hamnett and Edith Tankus, Nearly

Lear upends expectations of what a Shakespeare play should be.

Two Performances

INTEGRATED ARTS OPPORTUNITIESPortland Ovations promotes integrated arts and in-depth learning for students and

educators through workshops, residencies and professional development opportunities.

In-School WorkshopsIn-school workshops are available to accompany each School-Time Performance. Ovations

Offstage educators conduct in-class workshops designed to bring the study guide to life

through hands-on, engaging activities. All workshops align with Common Core and Maine

Learning Standards. Opportunities to work with visiting artists are also available. The $13

ticket price includes a 1-hour in-class workshop (30 student limit per workshop). In-School

workshops can be booked separately for $100 per classroom (up to 30 students).

Professional DevelopmentPortland Ovations offers professional development to promote using the arts in teaching

classroom curriculum. Salary Credit Hours are available for Portland Public School educators.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIESCulture Club-PortlandCulture Club is a collaborative program of Portland Ovations, the Portland Museum of

Art, Portland Symphony Orchestra, and Portland Stage delivering accessible, consistent,

diverse, high quality arts experiences to students. In the 2013-2014 school year, 75% of the

students living in the Portland Public School district qualify for fully subsidized tickets on a

first-come, first-served basis. Culture Club Portland covers admission to a performance; it

does not cover bus expenses or in-school workshops.

Destination Portland: Bus Subsidy Program Portland Ovations subsidizes transportation for Maine schoolchildren and educators for

schools with populations of 50% or more free/reduced lunch. Grants up to $400 are

available. Subsidies through Destination Portland are limited and available on a first-come,

first-served basis.

School Cancellations and Refund PolicyPortland Ovations is obligated to pay artists regardless of weather conditions. If your school

is cancelled due to weather, Portland Ovations cannot refund your payment, but will try to

accommodate your group at another performance.
