Leadership for Change Wisdom for a LifetimeThe College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., was founded by Benedictine Sisters in 1913. The college was uniquely and specifically formed by women for women. Saint Benedict was the 13th women’s college in the United States and today is one of only 64 women’s colleges in the country. Whether in the classroom, at a sporting event, or living in the residence halls, CSB seeks to incorporate learning experiences inspired by the Catholic and Benedictine tradition.

The Saint Benedict experience creates a sense of community rarely seen at other colleges. It provides a safe and comfortable environment ideal for inquiring, learning and growing.

Located in the heart of central Minnesota lake country and surrounded by 3,500 acres of pure forests and wholesome prairies, Saint Benedict is just minutes away from the St. Cloud metro area and an hour drive from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Students experience the benefits of small town modesty, while enjoying the convenient access of a big city.

The College of Saint Benedict has a unique partnership with Saint John’s University, a men’s college located four miles away. The schools are nationally recognized Catholic liberal arts colleges and ranked as two of the top three Catholic colleges in the nation. We share one academic program, and students attend classes together on both campuses. This integrated learning experience combines a challenging academic program with extensive opportunities for international study, leadership, service learning, spiritual growth, and cultural and athletic involvement.

Both schools are dedicated to the development of a person as a whole. Offering single-gender and co-educational experiences, each strive to meet the distinct needs of women and men. Another advantage of this partnership is the expansion of resources for both institutions. CSB and SJU provide the education and opportunities of a large university accompanied with the individual attention of a small private college.

Saint Benedict strives to present students with opportunities to explore, stretch, and challenge their personal excellence. By developing their intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical health, our goal is to enable every woman to achieve her utmost potential.

The College of Saint Benedict’s mission is to foster integrated learning, exceptional leadership for change, and wisdom for a lifetime.

The 1970’s were a time of change, revolution, and transformation. Increased influence of the women’s movement, heightened concern over the environment, and improved space exploration were just a few of the headlines.

Saint Benedict was changing too.

In the 1976-77 season, the Saint Benedict volleyball team decided they would like their colors to be red and white. Known as the Bennies of the College of Saint Benedict, they also decided they wanted a new moniker. So, they held a contest to find a new nickname.

CSB students were invited to submit ideas, and student-athletes selected the one they liked best.

“Blazers,” submitted by first-year student Mary Haffner, was chosen as the official sports name. This was a perfect fit as it flawlessly described the hard work, determination, and success of the trailblazing women who founded the college.

These sisters “blazed” their way through a field of uncertainty and unknown land to settle in Minnesota in 1856. They went on to establish the largest Benedictine community in the United States. They also built hundreds of hospitals, schools, orphanages -- and the College of Saint Benedict in 1913.

Blazers pays tribute to the courageous, strong, and bold women of the past and gives encouragement and pride to the women of the future.

The Blazer basketball team must replace three starters from last season, but has the returning roster to do so and make moves in the MIAC.

St. Joseph, Minn. – The Saint Benedict basketball team returns talent throughout the line-up, coming off a 20-7 season (17-5 MIAC) heading into 2013-14. However, it doesn’t enter without holes to fills, as a trio of senior-starters wrapped up their career’s last winter, taking with them 62.3 minutes, 23.3 points and 12.8 rebounds per game.

The Blazers placed fourth in the conference standings last season, but with 65% of the teams scoring returning, the Blazers have the talent to rise in the conference standings and compete for the program’s 14th conference championship.

Whitney Canton, Hannah Hylla and Jamie Wollin all graduated, but, ready for one last go-round in Claire Lynch Hall is Morgan Dale, who was originally thought to have exhausted her eligibility last winter. Before the 2012-13 school year ended, though, Dale was awarded a fifth season from the NCAA, after missing much of the 2011-12 season with an injury.

Dale was a starter in 19 games last season, while playing in all 27. She averaged 7.8 points per game while leading the team in rebounds with 7.8 per game, a mark that was fourth in the conference. An All-MIAC Honorable Mention pick, she played her best basketball in league games, scoring in double figures eight times, while pulling down double digit rebounds five times, including three games where she recorded 16 rebounds.

As Dale led the defensive end last season, on offense fellow senior Brianna Barrett is back after an All-MIAC junior season where she led the Blazers in scoring, and ranked as the third highest scorer in the conference.

It was a career season for Barrett, starting all 27 games, while leading the Blazers in scoring 15 times and topping the 20-point mark five times. After scoring 11 points in the first two games combined, she was held under 10 points in a game just three times the entire rest of the season, and averaged 21 points per game over the final four games heading into the offseason, her best four-game stretch of the season.

Rounding out the trio of seniors in Tish Alexander, who enters her final season having played in every game over the past two years, averaging 19 minutes per game. She averaged 6.3 points per game last season – ranking fourth on the team – but her greatest presence may have been felt on the defensive end, as she led the team in steals and ranked sixth in the MIAC with a career high 70 takeaways last winter.

When looking at the juniors, it’s another trio that brings with them plenty of experience. Jordan Falk, Elena Koch and Emily Lueck each saw time in the line-up immediately as first-years back in 2011-12, and then added to the team’s depth last season.

Now as upper classmen, they are primed to step into the forefront.

Koch played in all 27 games last season with nine starts, adding three points and three rebounds per game. This season, she should combine with Dale to give the Blazers a solid 1-2 punch underneath.

Lueck played in 26 games and scored in double figures three times, including back-to-back 16-point efforts to open the season. Falk saw her role continually increase as the season wore on, playing in 10 games after the holiday break, and this season will combine with Lueck to help pick up the slack out on the wing left by the losses of Canton and Wollin.

Lueck’s younger sister Mattie is just a sophomore, but returns with experience beyond her years, after starting the last 10 games last season – and 16 total – while playing anywhere from point to post. She is the Blazers fourth-leading returning scorer, and is second only to Dale among returners in rebounds, averaging 3.1 per game last season.

After playing three straight road games to open last season, Head coach Mike Durbin begins his 28th season at the helm with four straight at home this season, and will not have to hit the road until Dec. 7.

The Blazers will begin the season with the Quinlivan and Hughes Tip-Off Tournament in Claire Lynch Hall, Nov. 15-16, welcoming Macalester, St. Scholastica and Wisconsin-Superior to St. Joseph for the weekend, taking on UWS on Friday night at 8 p.m., and CSS on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

MIAC play begins on Dec. 4 at home with a visit from St. Catherine, and then on Feb. 22 – also at home – the regular season wraps up when St. Thomas heads to town.

Mike Durbin is entering his 28th season in St. Joseph leading the Blazer basketball team, and his 29th year of collegiate coaching.

After collecting career win No. 575 in the season opener last year, Durbin begins the 2013-14 season just six wins shy of No. 600, as his career records stands at 594-170

heading into the season.

This comes after he guided the Blazers to their 26th 20-win season last year with a 20-7 overall record, while placing fourth in a tight MIAC race with a 17-5 conference record, closing just two games back in the conference standings. Durbin’s Blazers were the only team other than eventual champion Concordia to hold first place after Feb. 1, taking the spot after a win over the Cobbers capped the Blazers’ 10-game MIAC winning streak, the longest in the conference last winter.

Whitney Canton and Brianna Barrett added to the long list of All-MIAC players in his tenure last season, while leading the Blazers to a fourth place finish or better for the 26th time in 27 seasons. Throughout the decade of the 2000’s, the Blazers dominated the MIAC, winning or sharing eight conference titles. Under Durbin’s direction the Blazers have won 20 or more games 24 times.

In addition to his outstanding overall coaching record at CSB Durbin holds a 471-100 mark in conference play. Entering the season, Durbin has the ninth best winning percentage among active NCAA Division III women’s basketball coaches, while also ranking ninth in career wins.

He is one of just 20 coaches in the history of Division III women’s basketball with over 500 career wins, ranking 12th all time. With his 600th victory, he will become one of just 12 coaches in the history of DIII women’s college basketball to reach the mark. Furthermore, his 24 20-win seasons rank third all time, second among active coaches, and are two away from the all-time record.

During the summer of 2003, Durbin was inducted into the Minnesota High School Girls Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. On Dec. 1, 2001, against Macalester at Claire Lynch Hall, Durbin surpassed former University of St. Thomas head coach Ted Riverso to become the winningest coach in MIAC women’s basketball history.

Under Durbin’s direction, the Blazers have averaged nearly 22 wins a season for the past 26 years, and have won or shared 13 MIAC championship titles.

Saint Benedict has also competed in the NCAA Tournament 16 of the past 25 seasons, including eight NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, three Elite 8 appearances and two NCAA Final Four appearances.

In 1992-93, Saint Benedict made its first appearance in the NCAA Final Four, and then repeated that accomplishment just six years later. In the 1998-99 season, he led the Blazers to the NCAA Championship game, finishing as the national runner-up with a 74-65 loss to Washington University (Mo.), 74-65.

Durbin is a two-time NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year, five-

time MIAC Coach of the Year and two-time West Region Coach of the Year.

He has been fortunate enough to have coached some remarkable athletes at CSB. Four Blazers have received MIAC Player of the Year honors (Michelle Barlau, Danielle Guse, Laura Wendorff and Anna Heikenen); five have received All-American Honors (Barlau, Wendorff, Heikenen, Joyce Spanier and Kelly Mahlum) and two have received Academic All-American honors (Barlau and Robyn Ruschmeier-Courchane).

Durbin, the eldest of nine children, was born and raised in Howard, Ohio, which is one hour northeast of Columbus. At East Knox High School, he competed in basketball and football. After his high school graduation in 1977, Durbin attended Kent State University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in communication and public relations in 1981.

After KSU, Durbin returned to East Knox High School to be a varsity football assistant and junior varsity girl’s basketball coach. From there, he moved to Mt. Vernon Nazarene College where he was a volunteer assistant women’s basketball coach for two seasons. While at Mt. Vernon, Durbin received a master’s degree from Ashland College in sports administration. He was then hired as an interim coach at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. He served there for one year, before coming to CSB in 1986.

Durbin also serves as the athletic department’s recruiting coordinator, a role he began in 2012-13. He resides in St. Cloud, Minn. with his wife Teri, who is an associate director of admissions at CSB/SJU. They have been married for 24 years and have one daughter.

Denny Johnson begins his 28th season as an assistant coach for the College of Saint Benedict basketball team under head coach Mike Durbin in 2013-14.

Johnson has played a vital role in the Blazers’ success during his tenure. His knowledge and

insight for the game of basketball has made him a top-notch assistant coach. In his time as an assistant basketball coach, Johnson has been honored as AFLAC’s national assistant coach of the year.

He has been on board for each of Mike Durbin’s 594 victories, which includes each of the program’s 13 MIAC championships.

“It is extremely rare for a head coach and an assistant coach to be together for 27 years at the Division III level,” head coach Mike Durbin said. “I believe the stability and success of this program is a direct link to the longevity of our staff.”

Johnson was born and raised in St. Cloud, Minn. and graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1968. In high school, Johnson participated in football, basketball and baseball. Following high school, he attended St. Cloud State University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English. While attending St. Cloud State University, Johnson was a member of the Husky basketball program under the direction of Marlowe “Red” Severson and Noel Olson.

Johnson’s coaching abilities are not limited to basketball, as he also served as CSB’s head softball coach for 26 seasons. He won his 500th game on Apr. 28, 2011 against Carleton. He twice coached his softball teams to MIAC championships, as well as a pair of berths to the NCAA Division III Central Region Tournament.

Last spring, he began a new role, and in his first season as an assistant coach for Blazer softball, helped the team to 20 wins for the 15th time in program history.

Johnson and his wife, Robin, have been married 38 years and live in St. Cloud, Minn. Their two daughters graduated from Saint Benedict in 2007 and 2009.

Steve Howe-Veenstra enters his 14th season with the Blazer basketball program as an assistant coach.

In his 13 seasons on the staff, the Blazers have gone 277-77 which includes a 227-54 mark in MIAC play and eight conference championships.

Coach Howe-Veenstra’s experience, knowledge and insight for the game has brought versatility to the staff.

According to head coach Mike Durbin, Howe-Veenstra’s assistance with the team and the athletes have been very valuable. “Steve was asked to help with our post players when he started, and the impact was immediate.”

Howe-Veenstra’s experience can be traced back over 38 years to St. Cloud Technical High School, where he coached in the boy’s program. Howe-Veenstra was born and raised in St. Cloud, graduating from St. Cloud Technical High School. After graduating from Tech, Howe-Veenstra enrolled at St. Cloud State University and graduated in 1979.

Howe-Veenstra is in his 34th year of teaching special education for the St. Cloud School District and his 11th year of teaching in the Community Options Program based at St. Cloud State University.

Howe-Veenstra and his wife, Carol Howe-Veenstra, the Saint Benedict Director of Athletics, have been married for 31 years. Their son, Ryan, is a 2009 graduate of Saint John’s University.

Barry Peterson returns for his third season with the Blazer basketball in 2013-14.

In his first season he helped guide the Blazers through an injury riddled campaign, where key players missed major parts of the season and young players were thrust into the line-up.

Then in 2012-13, he was there for the resurgence as the Blazers went 20-7 and 17-5 in the MIAC placing fourth. He helped Whitney Canton and Brianna Barrett to All-Conference honors, as each finished among the MIAC scoring leaders.

Throughout this coming academic year, over 300 Saint Benedict student-athletes will be part of the Blazer family, and all students on both campuses will cheer on the Blazers in competition, learn with them in the classroom, and grow with them as a member of the community. As Blazers, our women are empowered to develop their physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual growth. They are leaders, teammates, and winners on and off the court, the field, the rink, or the course.

The lifelong memories and passion for sports are what drive our student-athletes to be Blazers—women who are courageous, strong, and bold. And the support of the Blazer Backers makes those experiences possible.

As a Blazer Backer, you have the chance to be a fundamental part of our athletes’ success. Your commitment is vital in sustaining our winning tradition—one we can all be proud of! Please join the crowd as a Blazer Backer during the 2013-14 academic year with a gift today.
