Twenty Sweet 16s for Cardinals — Louisville advanced to its 20th NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2014, its third straight. Only three teams have been to more Sweet 16 appearances than Louisville’s 20 since the NCAA began Sweet 16 records in 1975 (North Carolina 25, Kentucky 25, Duke 23; tied with Kansas 20). Louisville has been to at least the Sweet 16 in six of the last 10 years, has reached the Elite Eight four of the last seven years and has been to two of the last three Final Fours. Louisville’s NCAA Sweet 16 teams: 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014.

The Cardinals have reached the NCAA Elite Eight on 13 occasions, including four of the last seven years (1959, 1972, 1975, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1997, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013). Cards Won American Titles — Louisville

finished where it was predicted — as the 2013-14 American Athletic Conference Champion, sharing the title with Cincinnati in the league’s inaugural season. It was the Cardinals’ 22nd regular season conference championship and first since UofL shared the 2013 Big East title in its final season in that league (regular season conference championships: American 1, Big East 2, Conference USA 1, Metro 12, Missouri Valley 6). It was the second-most league wins ever for the Cardinals (15-3), behind only the 16-2 mark as Big East Champions in 2008-09. Louisville has won at least 10 league games for seven straight seasons. The Cards have finished in the top three in their conference six of the last eight years. Louisville has won its conference championship or finished second in 26 of the last 38 years. Louisville also earned the league’s automatic bid while winning the AAC Tour-nament Championship, the third straight conference title for the Cardinals and 19th league tournament championship team. Pitino Gains 50th Victory in NCAA Tourna-

ment — UofL Coach Rick Pitino improved to 50-17 record in NCAA Tournament competition (.746) and is second among active coaches in winning percent-age and he is fourth among active coaches in NCAA Tournament victories. Pitino has a 42-7 record in NCAA Tournament competition when his team is the higher seed. Pitino’s teams have reached the Sweet 16 in 12 of his 19 NCAA Tournament appearances and has an 11-1 record at that stage.

Cards Win 30th — Louisville accomplished its eighth 30-victory season in school history and a school record third straight with its opening victory of the NCAA Tournament. Louisville won a school-record 35 games during 2012-13. UofL’s 1980 NCAA Championship team (33-3) and 2005 Final Four team (33-5) held the previous mark with two fewer wins. Louisville had won 30 games in back-

to-back seasons for the first time in school history entering last season (30-10 in 2011-12; 35-5 in 2012-13). UofL coach Rick Pitino has won 30 or more games on eight occasions, tied for third most all-time. Louisville is the only school with at least 30 victories

each of the last three seasons. It is Louisville’s fourth 30-win season in the past six years and the Cardinals’ 31 victories is tied for the sixth-most in school history.

Pitino’s Eighth 30-Win Season — UofL Coach Rick Pitino has coached eight teams which have won 30 games in his collegiate career, tied as the third most all-time. He has coached five of UofL’s eight 30-win seasons, including guiding three Louisville teams which reached the NCAA Final Four in 2005 (33-5), 2012 (30-10) and 2013, when the Cardinals won a school-record 35 games (35-5). The previous two years marked the first time Louisville had won 30 in back-to-back seasons, and last year made it a record three straight. UofL’s 35 victories in 2012-13 matched the most games a Pitino-coached team has won, also accomplished by his 1997 NCAA runner-up team at Kentucky with a 35-5 record. Cards Have 12 Straight 20-Win Seasons

— Louisville is one of eight Division I schools in the nation which has won 20 or more games in each of the past 12 seasons. Reaching 20 victories last year and extending their streaks are Kansas (25), Duke (18), Syracuse (17), Gonzaga (17), Florida (16), Memphis (14), Pittsburgh (13) and Louisville (12). UofL Coach Rick Pitino has won at least 20 games in a season on 22 occasions, ranking him sixth among active coaches in 20-win seasons and 16th overall. Pitino won 30 in a single season for the sixth time last year. UofL has won at least 20 games in 41 of the last 45 years. Cards Among National Statistical Lead-

ers — Louisville ranked among the nation’s top 20 in nine NCAA statistical categories during the 2013-14 season. Individually Russ Smith was 36th in steals

(2.0) and 74th in assists (4.6), Chris Jones was 20th in steals (2.2) and Montrezl Harrell was sixth in field goal percentage (.609) and 62nd in rebounding (8.4). All six of Louisville’s losses during the 2013-14 season came to teams that reached the NCAA Tournament.

Cards Have Been Tough on the Road — UofL has a 53-29 record over the last eight years on its opponent’s home court (.646). Louisville had the most road victories of any school in Big East Conference games over its last seven years in that league and was a league-best 8-1 in its road games in The American during the 2013-14 season. The Cardinals have a 45-25 record in conference games on the road over the last eight seasons (.643). In neutral site games, Louisville has a 26-4 record over the last three years (.867) and a 36-11 neutral site record over the last six years (.766).

In conference games overall, Louisville had the most Big East Conference victories over its eight years in that league during the regular season (from 2005 to 2013). Louisville had a 95-45 Big East record in league victories during the regular season, just ahead of Syracuse and Pittsburgh (both at 92-48).

Page 3: 2013-14 Review€¦ · 2013-14 Review Twenty Sweet 16s ... East 2, Conference USA 1, Metro 12, Missouri Valley 6). It was the second-most league wins ever for the Cardinals (15-3),

Winningest Senior Class — Louisville’s 2013-14 senior class is the winningest group over a four-year period in the Cardinals’ storied basketball history. Russ Smith, Stephan Van Treese, Tim Henderson and Luke Hancock (for the last two seasons) have been a part of Cardinal teams that have won 121 games since the 2010-11 season (121-31, .801), 11 more than the next closest group that finished last year (110-38). UofL’s 1979-83 unit that reached three Final Fours is third with 109 wins over that four-year period. The Cards’ 2013-14 seniors have been a part of two NCAA Final Fours, three conference tournament championships (two Big East, one American), two regular season co-conference titles (one Big East, one American), and three straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearances.

The group each contributed on Senior Day against UConn on March 8. Russ Smith handed out a career-high 13 assists and grabbed four steals. Luke Hancock scored 16 points, connecting on 4-of-7 three-pointers. Stephan Van Treese grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds and added six points and two steals. Tim Henderson gained his first career start and scored the second field goal of the game. The crowd of 22,782 was the fifth-largest in the Cardinals’ four seasons in the KFC Yum! Center.

Cards Continue Productive Defense — Louisville teams under Rick Pitino have been known for their defensive intensity and the 2013-14 unit followed in that tradition. UofL limited its opponents to 60 or fewer points in 16 of its 37 outings, including seven of the last 14. The Cardinals allowed an average of 61.1 points, ranking 15th in the nation in scoring defense. UofL was second nationally in steals, averaging 10.0 a game. Louisville committed fewer turnovers than its opponent in 33 of 37 games and led the nation in turnover margin (+6.7).

Louisville has ranked among the nation’s top 40 in field goal percentage defense in 10 of the past 12 years, including the 2013-14 season’s .396 percentage, which ranked 20th nationally. Louisville held 12 of its last 21 opponents under 40 percent shooting from the field, including a season-best 24.0 percent against Rutgers in the AAC quarterfinals. UConn made just 29.4 percent of its shots in the Cardinals’ last regular season game. UofL was sec-ond nationally in three-point field goal percentage defense (.286). Thieving Cardinals — As in recent years,

Louisville continued to provide good defensive pressure, leading the nation in turnover margin

(+6.7) and ranking second nationally in steals (10.0 per game) in 2013-14. Louisville led the nation in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings, with the Cardinals fourth nationally in adjusted defense and 15th in the nation in adjusted offense in 2013-14. A year earlier, Louisville forced an average of 18.3 turnovers and collected double-digit steals in 28 of its 40 games. In 2012-13 UofL was second in the nation in turnover margin (+5.9) and third in steals (10.8), and was rated as the top defense in the nation in Ken Pomeroy’s 2012-13 rankings. Louisville is the only team to rank among the nation’s top 10 in steals each of the last three seasons (8.8 steals in 2011-12, 7th in the nation; 9.3 steals in 2010-11, 7th in the nation). The Cardinals’ 430 steals in 2012-13 was a new school record.

Non-Conference Success — UofL has a 164-40 record (.804) against non-conference opponents in Coach Rick Pitino’s 13 seasons (includes post-season), including a 115-10 record at home (14-7 away). UofL has a 42-4 mark at home in non-conference games over the last four seasons. 100th Season of Cardinal Basketball

— The 2013-14 season marked the 100th of inter-collegiate basketball at the University of Louisville. While the Cardinals played their first official men’s basketball game on Jan. 28, 1912 when they lost 35-3 to Louisville YMCA, UofL did not field teams in 1916-17, 1922-23 or 1942-43. UofL has amassed an all-time 1,725-875 record in its 100th season. The Cardinals are 12th among all NCAA schools in victories. The Cardinals have produced winning seasons in 66 of the last 69 years, including winning 20 or more games in the last 12 straight seasons. Cardinals Have 121 Wins in Last Four

Years — UofL has won a combined 121 victories over the last four seasons, the second-most in the nation over that period behind only Kansas (123). Ohio State and Syracuse are tied for third in that four-year period with 119 wins. The Cards won a school-record 35 games in 2012-13 while winning the NCAA title. Louisville Top College Basketball

Market — Louisville is consistently the highest-rated television market for college basketball on ESPN. Louisville has been the top market each of the last 12 years, averaging a 4.5 rating for the 2013-14 season. Louisville was nearly two points higher than Greensboro, Kansas City and Raleigh-Durham, which tied for second with a 2.8 rating. The remaining top 10 is Memphis (2.6), Columbus (2.0), Cincinnati (1.9), Knoxville (1.9), Dayton (1.9) and Indianapolis (1.8).

The Cardinals’ NCAA Sweet 16 game against Kentucky this season drew a 51.5 rating and 73 share, making it the second highest-rated event in Louisville television history. Louisville’s 2013 NCAA Championship game against Michigan is the top-rat-ed television event all-time in the Louisville market.
