IEW Despite losing eight accomplished

veterans from last year’s squad, Alaska Anchorage head ski coach Sparky Anderson is confident that his youthful 2014 team is full of unlimited potential .

Led by three All-Americans, including two-time Nordic podium finisher Ma-rine Dusser, the Seawolves will feature only one senior alongside 13 freshmen .

“We still have a core group of return-ers, and we added some youth and raw talent that will take some time to de-velop,” said Anderson, who enters his fourth year as head coach and sixth year overall with the program . “I’m really excited about who we have and how hard everyone is working . I’ve been nothing but impressed so far . Our goal is always to qualify a full team to the NCAA Championships . I think a top-10 finish at NCAA’s is still our goal, but my primary focus this year is to give our returning athletes every opportunity to perform at their highest level and to develop the young talent we added this summer . I’ll measure our success by how far we can bring our young kids this year .”

MEN’S ALPINEAnderson is especially exited out his downhill crew, which will be six-deep on the men’s side, led by two-time NCAA qualifier Niko Harmenen. The junior from Finland has posted top-25 finishes in all four of his career races at Nationals, and was a top-10 placer in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association individual standings as a freshman .

Fellow junior James Schindler also posted a pair of top-25 showings at 2013 NCAAs and is poised for a break-out season, along with sophomore Ce-drick Gagnon, who came on strong at the end of last campaign .

“I’m looking forward to seeing what the guys can do this year,” Anderson

said . “We picked up some young talent with three additions on the men’s side . Kei Kullberg won the U-18 national championship in the giant slalom last year, so we know we’ve got someone with a lot of potential . Hughston Nor-ton was on the podium at the same event with a third-place slalom finish, and Curtis McKillop is a hard worker who has had some strong results on the new radius GS ski .”

WOMEN’S ALPINEThe women’s Alpiners will be led by three returning juniors – Vanes-sa Berther, Anna Berecz and Taylor Guetschow – along with four freshman .

Berther, from Bellevue, Wash ., was 16th in last year’s MVP standings and an All-RMISA placer in the slalom, fol-lowing All-America honors in the GS as a freshman . Meanwhile, fellow return-ing NCAA qualifier Berecz is coming off an incredible summer that saw her qualify for the Sochi Olympics with a strong performance at the 2013 South American Cup .

“The girls will be fun to watch this sea-son,” Anderson said . “We picked up Kat Lamoureux from the Quebec Provincial Team, who is a proven competitor at the Nor-Am level . Bella Andreini was a top-ranked U-18 GS skier from Utah, now looking to make her mark at the FIS-U level, while Tori McVicker and Miranda Sheely should provide some depth for us .”

MEN’S NORDICAssociate head coach Andrew Kastning will be the beneficiary of UAA’s most experienced skier in 2014, as returning All-American Lukas Ebner will be the squad’s only senior in either discipline . Ebner, from Germany, finished ninth in the 10-K classical race at 2013 NCAAs and posted seven top-5 results through-out the campaign .

Ebner will be joined by Alaskans Bran-don Brewster (Anchorage) and Davis

Dunlap (Palmer) – both juniors – as the squads only other veterans, although Ca-nadian Etienne Richard practiced with the team last spring and redshirted .

“We’re really excited about Andrew Ar-nold and Alex Loan, both talented An-chorage locals who have had success as juniors,” Anderson said . “Etienne came mid-year last season and is looking to be a Nordic impact skier this winter in his first full year, along with Teo Johansen, who brings a lot of potential with him from Norway .”

WOMEN’S NORDICAlthough the women’s Nordic squad will feature only four skiers, Kastning’s two sophomores have already shown national-title or All-America potential .

Marine Dusser, from Villard De Lans, France, burst on the NCAA scene last year with third-place finishes in both races at Nationals and runner-up honors in the RMISA Women’s Nordic MVP race . Dusser was also an All-RMISA performer, among her 10 top-5 placings .

Meanwhile, Patricia Sprecher narrowly missed All-America accolades with a 12th-place finish in last year’s NCAA classical race . From Switzerland, Spre-cher was 13th in the RMISA MVP standings as a rookie .

“Synnova Bruland is looking great in training this fall and looks to be a candi-date for some top Nordic results, while Mackenzie Kanady is a Nordic transfer from Montana State, originally from An-chorage, and is doing a great job so far in training . If the women are strong and pushing each other, we have a chance to surprise some people this year . It’ll be fun .”

SPARKY ANDERSONHead Coach 3rd Season

After five seasons as the Seawolves’ head Alpine coach, Sparky Anderson enters his

third season as the head coach of the entire Alas-ka Anchorage ski program in 2014 . Since taking over the program in 2012, An-derson has produced six All-America certificates on the slopes and 12 combined with Nordic . Pri-or to taking over head coaching duties, Ander-

son produced two national champions and seven downhill All-Americans throughout his five-year career from 2008-11 and 2002. In 2011, Anderson helped the Seawolves to their fifth straight top-10 placing at the NCAAs, while finishing sixth overall at the RMISA/West Region Championships . In 2010, Anderson produced his second national champion in Andreas Adde, who won the men’s slalom. UAA landed a combined five skiers as All-Americans and finished 7th at the national meet. Anderson also helped UAA to a program-best second-place finish at the RMISA/West Region Championships . During his third season in 2009, Anderson helped UAA to a program-best fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and helped produce five All-Americans and six All-Conference members. Anderson guided freshman standout Alex Parker to four individual titles and the RMISA Women’s Alpine MVP, while UAA’s women’s Alpine team was the re-gional champion . In his first season back with UAA in 2008, Anderson helped guide the Seawolf Alpine squad to one of its most successful campaigns, qualifying a full squad of six skiers to NCAAs for the first time since 1999, while two racers earned All-America honors . UAA claimed the overall RMISA Alpine title by combining to score a conference championship meet-best 256 points, producing nine top-10 results . All told, the Seawolf downhill-ers combined for 25 individual top-10 results during the 2008 season . Anderson came as no stranger to UAA or collegiate ski racing, having coached the Seawolf Alpine squad in 2002, when UAA’s Aurore de Maul-mont won the NCAA title in the giant slalom . Prior to coming to Alaska, he was the head ski coach at Brown University in Rhode Island from 1996-2000 . Prior to rejoining the UAA coaching staff, Anderson worked as the program director for the Alyeska Ski Club in Girdwood for seven years . A 1991 graduate of the University of Nevada, Anderson earned four letters in skiing with the Wolf Pack, serving as team captain his senior sea-son . After college, he moved to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, where he taught skiing for the Flori Woerndle Ski School . A year away from ski racing proved to be too much, and Anderson moved to Innsbruck, Austria, where he spent two years coaching a small FIS team at the Innsbruck In-ternational School . After leaving Europe, he moved to New England and spent two years coaching the Eastern Cup team at the Holderness School . In addition to his international experience, he holds USSA’s highest level of coach’s certification and currently serves as the Alaska Division’s USSA coaches education clinician . Over the years, he has been invited to coach at multiple national and regional events . Anderson grew up in Northern California and raced out of Bear Valley . He now resides in Girdwood with his wife Diana and daughter Kéa .
