4. One of the main innovations of the Rebbe Rashab,we may assert, is the founding of Yeshivas TomcheiT’mimim.16 The accomplishment of this yeshiva17 is thatthe study of Chassidus was established within thecurriculum.

What is the innovation of learning Chassidus withinthe framework of a yeshiva? The purpose of a yeshiva isthat there should be Torah study in an environment ofcamaraderie, analytical discussion among the students,and etc., for through debate, etc., the subject matter athand is illuminated and elucidated, until all details areclarified.

The approach of the Rebbe Rashab with regard to thestudy of the teachings of Chassidus was that Chassidusshould be learned in an academic manner. Indeed, theRebbe Rashab said18 that he wants the learning ofChassidus to be “like the study of sugiyos (topics) in therevealed dimension of the Torah,” to the extent that“Chassidus should be understood like a concept in therevealed dimension of Torah.” Thus, he established thestudy of Chassidus in the yeshiva curriculum19 so thattheir should be group learning, each group learning thesame concept (“sugya,” topic) in Chassidus in order toevoke discussion, etc., of the material, to the extent thatthe concept should be clear to the students in all itsdetails – just like the approach to the study of therevealed dimension of the Torah.

Indeed, this manner of the study of the innerdimension of the Torah stands as a fundamentalinnovation with respect to earlier times.

5. In earlier times there was a fundamental differencebetween the study of the revealed dimension of the Torahand the study of the inner dimension of the Torah.

The revealed dimension of the Torah was given in amanner that the intellect of a human being, a creation [ofG-d], could grasp the logic and the intelligence of theTorah. That is, notwithstanding the fact that the Torah isthe wisdom of the Holy One Blessed Be He, [of Whom itis said] that no thought can grasp Him, nevertheless, G-dhas lowered His blessed wisdom in a manner that also thehuman intellect can comprehend it (to the extent that it isin a manner of “it is called by his name,” it becomes “hisTorah” – “It is his Torah”).

The inner dimension of the Torah, however, remainedostensibly the Torah of G-d [unfathomable to the humanintellect]. In former times, the majority of the Jewishpeople accepted the concepts [discussed in the innerdimension of the Torah] with faith; it was beyond theintellect of a created being to grasp. (We may, therefore,assert that this is one of the explanations of the term“Kabbala” – that it is “received as a tradition” (es kumtb’kabbala) transmitted orally from person to person20

[accepted as it is, irrespective of whether the knowledgeis truly understood and internalized].)

Even in later generations (following the Arizal), whenthe concepts of the inner dimension of the Torah hadbeen elucidated in a manner whereby they “providelivelihood”21 – that they should be understood22 (not onlyin a manner of “a mere gloss”23) – they were not broughtdown to the human intellect so that one could graspthem. Rather, it remained G-dly intellect, which can onlybe comprehended with the intellect of the G-dly Soul (the

G-dly intellect of the G-dly Soul, which can grasp thespiritual concepts expounded in the inner dimension ofthe Torah).

(In fact, it is for this reason, we may assert, that noteveryone can comprehend theconcepts; just those who have a loftysoul and who have also properlypurified themselves to become avessel for the revelation of the soul.Whereas, those who are not“purified” and do not have a lofty soulcannot comprehend the innerdimension of the Torah.)

Indeed, this is one of theexplanations of the words of theZohar24 – that in the inner dimensionof the Torah, “there is no quandary,etc.” (not like in the revealeddimension of the Torah).

A quandary is an expression ofhiding and concealment, anobstruction to the truth of Torah.Therefore, the revealed dimension ofthe Torah, which is expressed in amanner that the human intellectshould comprehend it, is comprisedof difficulties. (That is, the questionsare a portion of the Torah itself. Theproof for the matter, which wasdiscussed on several occasions, is thateven if one were to only learn a question in Torah, he isobligated to have recited beforehand the blessing on the[Mitzva to learn] Torah.) The reason for this is that thehuman intellect cannot immediately appreciate theintellect of the Torah (the wisdom of G-d, may He be

blessed); the human intellect must first contend withquandaries, etc., until the one who learns refines hisintellect and approaches the truth of the Torah.

Whereas, the inner dimension of the Torah, which isnot brought down to the humanintellect but only to the G-dly Soul,to which Torah comes easy – “there isno quandary, etc.”

4 NISSAN: THE TIMES AND SIGNS OF THE REDEMPTION –THE SPIRITUAL EYES OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE ALREADY SEETHE REDEMPTIONIn spiritual matters (even at their highest levels), there isalready a culmination, to the point of the completion ofthe (spiritual) Redemption.

The spiritual eyes of the Jewish People already see theRedemption. Now we only have to open the physicaleyes, so that they too will see the Redemption in arevealed sense, with eyes of flesh, in these times.

5 NISSAN: THE DIFFICULTIES OF THE EXILE CAN BEREPLACED BY SPIRITUAL MATTERS“And they embittered their lives with hard work, inmortar and in bricks…by which they made them serrvewith rigor” (Shmos 1:14).

“And they embittered their lives” – this is the Torah (ofwhich it is said [regarding words of Torah], “for they areour life”); “with hard work (b’avoda kasha)” – this refersto a quandary (kushia); “in mortar (b’chomer)” – this isthe kal v’chomer; “and in all work in the field” – this is aBraisa; “and in bricks (l’veinim)” – this is the clarification(libun) of Torah law.

We learn from this that it is possible to replace andexchange all the difficulties of the Exile – making aliving, other troubles, etc. – for spiritual matters. Whenwe immerse ourselves in the study of Torah assiduously

and with constant toil and effort, we “fulfill ourobligations” for the difficulties of the Exile and we merita personal spiritual redemption, which will bring aboutthe general material Redemption.

6 NISSAN: WE PRESERVE OUR UNIQUENESS EVEN IN THEEXILE “‘And he became there a nation’ – this teaches that theJewish People were outstanding there” (D’varrim 26:5,Yalkut Shimoni 938).

The Jewish People in Egypt represented a smallminority and they lived under the worst possibleconditions. However, our Sages, of blessed memory, tellus that they were different and cut off from theirenvironment, proudly guarding the quality anduniqueness of their lives with devotion – “for the JewishPeople were outstanding (prominent) there” – theydidn’t change their names, their language, theirreligion, and their attire.” Thus, specifically throughthis, they ensured their existence and even reached theredemption.

This matter also applies regarding this generation, as byour being “outstanding there” and protecting ouruniqueness, we will hasten and bring about the True andComplete Redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu.

7 NISSAN: THE NATIONS OF THEWORLD IN THE FUTURE TO COME In the Future to Come, there will be acorrection and completion of thenature of the whole world. This is oneof the main principles of the faith in thecoming of Moshiach, as is explained inmany Torah verses and Midrashim ofour Sages, of blessed memory.

In addition, in simple terms, at thetime of the Future Redemption, G-dsurely will not kill all the nations ofthe whole world! This is the oppositeof logic, the opposite of Torah, for“its ways are pleasant ways, and allits paths are peace,” the opposite ofthe concept of “G-d created nothingin His world without purpose,” andthe opposite of the overall concept ofYiddishkait!

The whole idea of war (killingpeople, etc.) is in discord with thespirit of Torah – “its ways are pleasant ways, and all itspaths are peace” – and only for a lack of alternative,when Gentiles come upon Jewish cities, is there anobligation to go out to war in order to protect Jews,otherwise the very concept of war is contrary to Torah.

8 NISSAN: PREPARING THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD FORTHE FUTURE REDEMPTIONThe nations of the world will also exist in the Future toCome, and there will even be a situation of redemptionin relation to them (pertaining to their prior status).Therefore, as a preparation for the Future Redemption,the Jewish People must also take action upon the wholeworld – that it should be fitting and ready for theposition and status of “repairing the world in thekingdom of G-d.” This matter is achieved through theJewish People taking action with the nations of the worldto ensure that they conduct themselves in a manner of,“He formed it to be inhabited,” through the fulfillment of

the Seven Noachide Laws.

9 NISSAN: THE TIMES AND SIGNS OFTHE REDEMPTION – THERE REMAINSONLY ONE MOTION OF G-DIn our generation and in our times,as has been mentioned manytimes…all matters have already beencompleted, and the only thing thatremains is one motion of G-d to takethe Jewish People out of Exile andbring them to Eretz HaKodesh.

Therefore, Jews ask and cry out againand again – and now with evengreater fortitude – “Ad Masai?!”

10 NISSAN: DESTRUCTION OF THEIDOLS AS A PREPARATION FOR THEREDEMPTION“And they shall take for themselves a

lamb per parental home, a lamb per household” (Shmos12: 3).

The Pesach sacrifice is the lamb that the Jewish Peopleoffered prior to their going out of Egypt. The lamb servesas the Egyptians’ national idol, which they served andworshipped, and therefore, there was understandably thedifficulty standing before the Jewish People with thisaction.

Indeed, the Sages, of blessed memory, relate that in themerit of the fortitude and self-sacrifice the Jewish Peoplehad then, and in the merit of fulfilling the mitzva withoutbeing affected by the Egyptians, they brought theredemption.

Just as the redemption from Egypt came about throughfortitude and self-sacrifice, similarly, through going withfortitude and self-sacrifice in the fulfillment of Torah andmitzvos, the Future Redemption will come, speedily inour days mamash.

Throughout the years, during the Rebbe's Purim Farbrengen ("Thirty days before the Chag(Pesach)"), the Rebbe would customarily remind and urge everyone concerning the importance ofcontributing Tzedakah for "Mo’os Chitim."

It is well known that "Kupas Rabbeinu" endeavors to continue implementing all of the holyprojects and activities which the Rebbe has established. Amongst these activities is the Rebbe'spractice to extend financial aid to those families in need of their various Pesach necessities.

Accordingly, we are at this time urging and requesting each and every Anash memberand Tomim uhjha to coontribute generously to "Kupas Rabbeinu," in order to enable theadministration to provide for these families and thus afford them with the opportunityto celebrate Pesach with contentment and joy.

Reegarding this Mitzvah it is stated: "Whoever increases (in giving) is praiseworthy."

Unfortunately, the amount of families in need of this financial assistance is more thangenerally assumed. As such,, the more generous your contribution to "Kupas Rabbeinu,"the greater the number of families receiviing assistance will be.

And since, with regard to all Mitzvahs we are instructed to act with Simcha and zest, it is all themore pertinent with regard to the aforementioned, as it is of paramount importance that the fundsbe received and distributed as soon as possible.

In the merit of Tzedakah which hastens the Geula, may we merit the true Geula Shlaimah, withthe revelation of Melech HaMashiach - The Rebbe Nasi Doreinu, immediately, Mamash.

Let’s imagine for a moment a youngman going out on shlichus,enthusiastic and charged with energy,ready to devote himself with greatvigor to the new role he must fulfill.He merely wants to know what exactlythe Rebbe MH”M wants him to do?What is the direction that the avoda ofshlichus must take today?

All of us will promptly send him to

learn in-depth the sicha that the Rebbedelivered specifically to the shluchimat the 5752 International ShluchimConference.

Yet, after studying the matterelsewhere in the Rebbe’s teachings,several questions arise that are likely tocause confusion andmisunderstanding, and leaves usasking ourselves: What form of avoda

is the Rebbe shlita expecting from us?

AT FIRST GLANCE,SPECIFICALLY THROUGH

EXPLANATIONS What do we mean?

In a sicha from Shabbos ParshasChayei Sara 5752, the Rebbe issuedpractical instructions: The practicalinstruction that must come out fromour standing here at the start andopening of the “International ShluchimConference”: Above all, a proclamationand announcement must go forth to allshluchim that the avoda of shlichusnow for every Jew is expressed in theirgreeting Moshiach Tzzidkeinu.

…and the simple intention is thatfrom the Shluchim Conference, wemust come forth with goood resolutionson how each shliach must preparehimself and prepare all the Jews in hisplace and hiss city, etc., to greetMoshiach Tzidkeinu by explaining thesubject of Moshiach, as it is explainedin the Written Torah and the OralTorah, in an acceptable manner foreach person according to his inteellectand understanding, particularlyincluding– through studying thesubject of Moshiach and theReedemption, and especially in amanner of wisdom, understanding,

What is the only sicha in which the Rebbeinstructs that the subject of Moshiach and theRedemption sshould be done “in an acceptablemanner,” and why don’t we find such alimitation in any of the holy sichos that dealwith publicizing the announcement of theRedemption? Again, a few words from the finalquote: “explaining the subject ofMoshiach,” “in an acceptable manner,”“each person according to his intellectand understanding,” “studying thesubject of Moshiach and theRedemption,” “in a manner of wisdom,understanding, and knowledge.” Thecommon link among them: Clearconditions – apparently – in everymatter of the shlichus today to greetMoshiach: intellectual explanation in amanner of study until it is accepted inpeople’s intellect, specifically throughunderstanding and comprehension.

WE SHALL DO AND WESHALL HEAR

If this be the case, the question isasked: The purpose of Moshiach is tobring fulfillment to all of Torah andmitzvos, the primary foundation ofwhich is, “we shall do and we shallhear.” The condition to our rights tothe Torah is the Jewish People’sdeclaration of “we shall do and weshall hear.” The point is emphasized inthe maamarim and sichos of ourRebbeim that the acceptance of thematter in a manner of absoluteobedience prior to intellectualunderstanding is a basic principle to allof Torah and mitzvos.

Therefore, how it is possible thatwhen we come to a mitzva campaignthat is connected to “Moshiach” fromstart to finish, the culmination and theultimate purpose of the fulfillment ofTorah and mitzvos – we are presentedwith a clear condition: It must be done“b’ofen ha’miskabel” (in an acceptablemanner)? Isn’t this contradictory to thenotion of accepting with obedience?The approach of prior understandingand comprehension stands in directcontrast to the approach that hasguided the other ten mitzva campaignsthat the Rebbe proclaimed over theyears. The Rebbe has always spokenabout “the deed is the main thing,”“one mitzva brings another mitzva,”etc.

One of the differences betweenLubavitcher chassidim and all thoseorganizations that try to imitateChabad and its holy work in bringingJews closer to their Father in Heaven isexactly this point. While Chabad isinvolved with “the actual deed,”another person putting on t’fillin,another mezuza affixed, anotherkosher kitchen – they invest all theirenergy in workshops and seminarsbuilt around intellectual explanations.

Why specifically in the MoshiachCampaign did the Rebbe find itappropriate to demand that we actalong the lines of intellectual

explanations, “understanding andcomprehension and in a manner ofwisdom, understanding, andknowledge”?

PUBLICITY – WITHOUTEXPLANATIONS

We could overcome this hurdlewith one simple answer: We shall doand we shall hear!

It is not our concern to deal withintellectual comparisons between onemitzva campaign and other. We mustattach ourselves to the Rebbe shlita’sinstructions and take action. On the

T’fillin Campaign, we focus on action,which is the main thing, and with theMoshiach Campaign, we focus onexplanation, which according to theRebbe is the main thing. Therefore,since these are the Rebbe’s instructions,even if we don’t understand, we mustcarry them out down to the letter –specifically “in an acceptable manner.”

Though, when we examine the waythe Rebbe himself relates to theMoshiach Campaign, we see that evenin the Moshiach Campaign, the Rebbeencourages “actual deed,” even when itis done without any explanationwhatsoever.

In a sicha from Shabbos ParshasR’ei 5751, the Rebbe instructed us “toproclaim and publicize in everylocation – in words coming from theheart – that G-d says (through Hisservants, the Prophets) to each andevery Jew, ‘Behold, I have placed ablessing before you today,’ to the pointthat today we literally see with flesheyes the blessing of the True andComplete Redemption.”

We’re talking about a message that’snot so simple, one that is surely notaccepted by everyone, and there areeven those among Lubavitcherchassidim who have difficulty digestingsuch matters… Yet, what does theRebbe say regarding those chassidimfor whom the matter does not takehold “in an acceptable manner”?

The Rebbe continues to say, “Andwe must add and emphasize that theproclamation and publicity of all theaforementioned must even be throughthose who claim that this matter hasnot yet been (completely) grasped inhis understanding, comprehension,and awareness. For since he alsopossesses complete faith, he can (andtherefore, must) publicize to others,starting with the members of hishousehold (for surely they don’t haveto “suffer” because the matter has notyet been grasped within his intellect),and all those in his surroundings,every single Jew. Thus, through the

appropriate efforts, these matters willsurely be accepted and have theireffect, including upon the one whoproclaims and publicizes, to begrasped in its most inner aspect, etc.”

Therefore, it is possible to publicizeeven when matters are not fullyaccepted, and even when they are notaccepted within the intellect of theperson himself who is publicizing!

In addition, there were dozens ofblessings and expressions of approvalfrom the Rebbe MH”M – both verballyand in writing – on publicizing thatthe Rebbe is Melech HaMoshiach onstreet signs, newspaper ads, and more.Similarly, there were blessings andinstructions to continue activities ofthis type. All this has already beenpublicized and collected in the seiferAnd He Will Redeem Us (MendelssohnPress, 5754) among other places.However, for purposes of edification, Iwill bring two examples.

*The secretary, Rabbi Yehuda LeibGroner, once read before the Rebbe thetext of an advertisement that R.Yitzchak Springer, mashpia of YeshivasTomchei T’mimim – Lubavitch “770,”had arranged in order to print in theNew York Times (among otherperiodicals in Hebrew and Yiddish),and asked if it was possible to printthem, accompanied by the Rebbe’spicture and a reference that “the Rebbeis Melech HaMoshiach,” and the Rebberesponded in the affirmative. These adsincluded virtually no explanatorymaterial, focusing instead on “the deedis the main thing,” acceptance of theRebbe’s sovereignty – and the Rebbeapproved!

*R. Moshe Berdugo of MigdalHaEmek submitted a request to put upthe signs that he prepared for thestreets of the city with the RebbeMH”M’s picture over the words “YechiAdoneinu…” While these notices weremade without even the slightest shredof informational material, and surelynot in a manner of “wisdom,understanding, and knowledge,”

nevertheless, R. Moshe received theRebbe’s complete approval.Furthermore, when he later sent theRebbe an album with pictures of thesigns that he hung all over town, theRebbe smiled and nodded his head inan expression of satisfaction with thepresentation.

In light of these answers, arepresentative sample of dozens ofanswers in this spirit regardingadvertisements lacking explanatory

material on the acceptance of theRebbe MH”M’s sovereignty, theconfusion grows: What is the Rebbereally demanding of us? Ads with noexplanation or explaining “in anacceptable manner”?

FAITH – IN THE TIME OF THEEXODUS FROM EGYPT

After discussing the question atlength, and before providing ananswer, we have to give a little

introduction:

Two similar Midrashim speak abouthow the Jewish People merited to beredeemed from Egypt: “Our fatherswere redeemed from Egypt in the meritof faith” and “Our fathers wereredeemed from Egypt in the merit ofthe blood of the Pesach offering andthe blood of circumcision.” What is theconnection between these twoMidrashim?

Another midrash discusses theaccusation aroused in Heaven whenthe Jewish People were standing at theRed Sea, claiming that “these are idolworshippers and those are idolworshippers,” so why are these betterthan those? We learn from thecontinuation of the midrash that G-dreplied to the heavenly accusers that itwas in the merit of the Jewish People’sfulfillment of the blood of the Pesachoffering and the blood ofcircumcision. How is this an answerto the question?

The Rebbe shlita explains (LikkuteiSichos, Vol. 3, Parshas Bo) that there aretwo types of connections between G-dand the Jewish People: the connectionthrough Torah and mitzvos and theessential connection stemming from G-d’s love towards His children. Therefore,when the accusers made their claimsagainst the Jewish People that “these areidol worshippers,” the true response tothis is “in any event, they are Mychildren.” For this purpose, it wasnecessary to reveal G-d’s essential love,higher than the practical level of themitzva fulfillment required of the JewishPeople.

To reveal this inner and essentialconnection with G-d, Jews would haveto reveal their own essential love to G-d,and this was expressed in the blood ofthe Pesach offering and the blood ofcircumcision. The blood of circumcisionexpresses the essential connectionbetween us and G-d, albeit not in arevealed sense, and since G-d wouldhave to express His essential lovetowards us specifically in a revealed

manner to take the Jewish People out ofEgypt, it would therefore be necessaryfor the Jewish People to reveal theiressential love through the blood of thePesach offering. The Pesach sacrifice wasthe idol of the Egyptians, and when allthe Jewish People suddenly boughtlambs, this was something that couldnot remain a secret, and thus requiredtremendous self-sacrifice – and thisrevealed their essential love for theirCreator.

This is also connected to themidrash, “Our fathers were redeemedin the merit of faith.” It represents thesame point – the essential point that ishigher than intellect – faith.

PREPARATION FOR THEREDEMPTION – INSTILLINGG-DLINESS ALSO WITHIN

THE INTELLECTAll this was perfectly fine regarding

the Redemption from Egypt, asrevelations of faith and self-sacrificewere sufficient for what was requiredof the Jewish People at the time. Thesame does not apply with the FutureRedemption. Why? Because at theExodus from Egypt, the revelation wasonly from Above to below, and while itdid reach below, the revelation onlypertained to the higher realm. Theinnovation of the Future Redemptionis how the revelation of G-dliness will

be (also) from below to Above.

Furthermore, as a preparation forthe revelation of G-dliness in such away that even the lower realms will beinstilled with G-dliness, the teachingsof Chabad chassidus were revealed.Chassidus instills the loftiest matters ofG-dliness into man’s physical andmaterial intellect. This is the conditionstated by Melech HaMoshiach inresponse to the Baal Shem Tov’squestion, “When will the MasterCome?” – “When your wellsprings willspread to the outside.” This is thepreparation for the Redemption, i.e.,the outside itself will be instilled withthe wellsprings of chassidus. “Measurefor measure.”

Even before the revelation ofChabad chassidus, the leaders of theJewish People were aroused over thesubject of faith in G-d. However, thisfaith was a merely a matter of “fromAbove to below,” and the innovationtoday is to instill faith into man’sintellect, as demanded for the role ofpreparing for the Redemption. “Theywere redeemed in the merit of faith,”but today faith alone is not enough;there is a need for understanding andcomprehension to penetrate thelimitations of man’s intellect downbelow.

PUBLICITY ANDEXPLANATION – TWODIFFERENT PLAINS OF

AVODAWe now turn to the subject of our

discussion. As with all the mitzvacampaigns, the Moshiach Campaign isalso connected to the culmination ofthe fulfillment of Torah and mitzvos, asbased now and always upon thefounding principle of doing things in amanner of “we shall do and we shallhear.” We must tell our fellow Jewsthat the Lubavitcher Rebbe is MelechHaMoshiach, even before he haslearned, reasoned, and understood,and to that extent the Rebbe MH”Mhas encouraged publicity of this type

in the clearest and most explicitmanner possible.

However, we mustn’t settle for this.Together with all the publicity, wemust learn these subjects in an innermanner. When a Jew proclaims “YechiAdoneinu,” realizing that it refers to theLubavitcher Rebbe, this is the “Alef”even before he comprehends withwisdom, understanding, andknowledge. However, this is notenough, because as we mentionedabove, the whole innovation of theRedemption is how it also pertains tothe lower realms, for G-dliness will bethe innermost aspect of the Creation.Thus, we must learn and explain thesubject of Moshiach and theRedemption, even in a manner ofintellectual effort in its simplest sense.

Therefore, the Rebbe statesexplicitly in the sicha, “studying thesubject of Moshiach and theRedemption,” literally “studying,” “andespecially in a manner of wisdom,understanding, and knowledge.” Whyis this so important? Because this is theinnovation of the Future Redemption –things must be in an inner manner.

“IN AN ACCEPTABLEMANNER”

Now that we know that on the onehand, there is the matter of publicizingthe announcement of the Redemptionand the acceptance of the Rebbe’ssovereignty, while on the other hand,there is the matter of studying thesubject of Moshiach and theRedemption “in an acceptable manner”with understanding andcomprehension, we must rememberthat we’re talking about two separateconcepts that should be not confusedwith each other.

“B’ofen ha’miskabel” is absolutely nocontradiction to publicizing Moshiach’sidentity without explanation.Furthermore, as we discussedpreviously at length, the Rebbehimself, who demanded that it must be“in an acceptable manner,” instructed

and encouraged publicity without anyacceptable explanation.

“B’ofen ha’miskabel” was never saidin connection with publicity! “B’ofenha’miskabel” is a clear and simplecondition for study and explanation,virtually synonymous with “study,” forif it is not accepted in the intellect ofthe person studying, then what type ofstudy is it? This is what the Rebbemeant when he said, “in an acceptablemanner” – when we learn aboutMoshiach and the Redemption, wemust do so in an acceptable mannerfor the person studying in order toattain the objective of learning, i.e.,everything should be assimilatedinwardly.

If we take another look at the sicha,we see that it says “to prepare all theJews in his location and his city, etc.,to greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu, throughexplaining the concept of Moshiach, asis explained in the Written Torah andthe Oral Torah, in an acceptablemanner for each person according tohis intellect and understanding.” Whenwe explain to a Jew, it obviously mustbe done “b’ofen ha’miskabel for eachperson according to his intellect andunderstanding.”

However, we see again that thisapproach – vital and essential as it is –is not enough on its own. The Rebbeinsists that we must even publicizeopenly, so that everyone today willknow who Melech HaMoshiach is.

Anyone who looks into all of theRebbe’s sichos during the latter years,which contain numerous instructionsin connection with the MoshiachCampaign, will find that in all thesichos where the Rebbe instructs us topublicize the announcement of theRedemption, the words “in anacceptable manner” do not appearanywhere. The only time that thesewords are mentioned was in the sichabefore the aforementioned ShluchimConference in the section dealing withthe study and explanation of theconcepts of Moshiach and the

Redemption.

Thus, the distinction is clear: TheRebbe does not limit publicity of theannouncement of the Redemption to“b’ofen ha’miskabel,” and only inconnection with explanation of theconcepts of Moshiach and theRedemption does the Rebbe stateclearly that it must be conveyed “in anacceptable manner.”

This means that when we come tosomeone in the street, unfamiliar withthe teachings of Torah, and we want toexplain the unique and lofty nature ofthe days of Moshiach, we don’t tell himthat there will soon be a revelation ofG-d’s Infinite Light, since this cannotbe accepted according to his intellectand understanding. We have to tellsuch a person that in the days ofMoshiach, there will be peace andtranquility, and material delicacies willbe as abundant as dust. This issomething that speaks to him, andwhich can bring him to an inner stateof anticipation for the revelation ofMoshiach. We may, on the other hand,talk to an observant Jew aboutattaining the fullest measure in Torahand mitzvos, thus arousing him to adesire and eagerness for the revelation.This is the definition of “b’ofenha’miskabel.”

In summation, we have beencommanded in the clearest possiblemanner regarding two plains of avodain the Moshiach Campaign:

1) Publicizinng the announcement ofthe Redemption – The Rebbe discussesthis at the beginning of the sicha,when he speaks about the onlyshlichus remaining today – greetingMoshiach Tzidkeinu, how there issomeone in every generation from theseed of Yehuda who is fit to beMoshiach, and in our generation, it isthe leader of the generation.

Accordingly, many chassidimengage in activities publicizing theannouncement of the Redemption,

including Moshiach’s identity, withoutexplanations, and have been privilegedto receive sweeping encouragement,approval, and brachos from the Rebbeevery step of the way.

2) Studying these subjects – be itthe announcement of the Redemptionin general or the identity of the Rebbeas Melech HaMoshiach in particular, ina manner of “wisdom, understanding,and knowledge,” understood by eachperson according to his intellect andunderstanding so that it can beaccepted inwardly. This“understandably” must be “in anacceptable manner,” the whole purposeof which, as mentioned above, is toprepare for the imminent arrival of theTrue and Complete Redemption.

“GREET” OR JUST “PREPARE”?Another point explained in the

sicha from Shabbos Parshas ChayeiSara 5752 doesn’t sit well with manyof us and appears at first glance to be asource of much confusion. Yet, after allthe above explanation, things shouldnow be more clearly understood:

Frequently throughout the sicha,the Rebbe MH”M mentions hispractical “instruction,” as mentionedabove, to greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu.However, on numerous occasions, healso adds the words “prepareourselves,” “get ready,” “prepare theworld” to greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu. Incontrast, there are other instanceswhere he says that the avoda is “togreet Moshiach Tzidkeinu,” withoutadding anything indicating“preparation” at this point.

This again brings us to somethingnot quite understood: At what stageare we holding? In other words: Whatexactly is required of us – to greetMoshiach Tzidkeinu in actual deed orto prepare to greet MoshiachTzidkeinu?

The fact is that these two activitiesexist simultaneously, and there is nocontradiction between them. On thecontrary, each one complements the

other.

The avoda is to greet MoshiachTzidkeinu, i.e., everyone will knowwho Moshiach is and accept hissovereignty upon them. This is theavoda. In the Rebbe’s holy words: “Theonly thing that remains now in theavoda of shlichus is to greet MoshiachTzidkeinu in actual deed.”

However, together with this, wemust also make certain that peopleunderstand this with their power ofcomprehension and understanding.This is the meaning of “preparing” theworld to greet Moshiach – to prepareoneself and others to be a “readyvessel” to accept this, even in thedepths of his soul.

How is this achieved? In the

Rebbe’s holy words, “by explaining thesubject of Moshiach, as it is explainedin the Written Torah and the OralTorah, in an acceptable manner foreach person according to his intellectand understanding.”

These are the two required plainsof avoda: publicizing who MelechHaMoshiach is in order that peopleshould accept him, and in parallel,“preparing” the world for this throughinner explanation.

“RAV” AND “KING”It can perhaps be said that these

two methods in avoda are an exampleof and preparation for the two parallelmethods of influence that MelechHaMoshiach will bring at the actualRedemption.

Chassidus explains (maamer,“Un’chei Alav” 5725) that Moshiach iscalled both a “rav” and a “king,”because the concept of a “rav” is toinfluence internally, within a person’sintellect, in an acceptable manner,indicating that Torah should be learnedwith comprehension, understanding,and even seeing – in order that theJewish People should properlyinternalize it.

Whereas, the concept of a “king” isrising above the people, indicating aninfluence from the king of the veryloftiest matters, in an encompassingmanner.

This means that as a preparationfor these concepts as pertaining toMoshiach himself – “rav” and “king” –we are required even now, as we holdby “the greeting of MoshiachTzidkeinu,” to do this in these twoways: internally and encompassing.

In summation, the Rebbe has givenexplicit instructions andencouragement to these twoindispensable modes of avoda:

1. Publicizing in the city streetsthat the Rebbe is Melech HaMoshiach,standing ready to redeem usimmediately, fulfilling the Rebbe’sinstructions “to greet MoshiachTzidkeinu in actual deed.”

2. In parallel, we must hold in-depth Torah classes on the subject ofMoshiach and the Redemption in amanner of understanding andcomprehension, accepted and fit foreach person according to his intellectand understanding, thus preparingourselves and the world to greetMoshiach Tzidkeinu.

This is the only shlichus, to whichwe must dedicate ourselves with theutmost devotion until the imminentrevelation of the Rebbe, MelechHaMoshiach.

Like our ancestors who wereredeemed from Egypt, that is how Ifelt in preparing this article: at firstthe work was backbreaking but atthe end I saw great miracles. All ofthe shluchos interviewed were inthe midst of their Pesachpreparations, whether organizing,helping, advising, or supervisingsince they are the ones people turnto about Pesach and about Judaismin general. If we add to this the factthat Mrs. Rochel Matusof had justgiven birth, Mrs. Miri Feigelstockwas about to give birth, and Mrs.Leah Lypszyc was in the week ofSheva Brachos for her son – youcan see why these interviews were achallenge!

When do you start organizingfor Pesach?

Shifra Goldstein, Madrid: Westart many months before Pesach.Whenever we hear that someone iscoming here from Eretz Yisroel,New York, or France, we ask themto bring us wine or matzos.Recently it has become easierbecause our children are scatteredthroughout the world. When theycome to us for Pesach, each onebrings some of the things we need,so baruch Hashem, we are notlacking.

Yet I don’t like waiting till thelast minute, so when we go to theKinus HaShluchim in New York webring back what we can get at that

time, for Pesach.

Rochel Matusof, Canada: Webegin cleaning the Chabad houseright after Purim, but our Pesachorders are made a few monthsbefore that. The orders fromToronto or Montreal have to bemade in advance so that it allarrives on time. There are thingsthat even in Montreal they get fromEretz Yisroel or New York, and itall takes time, which is why wehave to get started months inadvance.

We have to remember to order aB’dikas Chametz set, and to getwalnuts, because you can’t get themhere. You can only buy walnutsaround the gentile holiday time in

December and that’s when I buythem. This year I didn’t rememberto buy any and we’ll have tomanage this Pesach without them.Aside from that, I just gave birth sothe work is more complicated.

Miri Feigelstock, Paraguay: Wecame here last year, about a weekand a half before Pesach, with allthe things we needed for Yom Tov.All that remained were two days ofcooking to do. This year, baruchHashem, I am about to give birthany day, so I don’t know preciselyhow I will manage. My husband isdoing most of the work.

Tell us how you get matzos,wine, and meat for Pesach.

Rochel: We fly it in fromToronto or Montreal, a four-hourflight. The matzos come from NewYork. It all has to be arrangedahead of time because the shipmenttakes at least a week to get here.

Shifra: We import the matzosfrom New York when my husbandgoes to the Kinus HaShluchim inKislev! If we can’t get the amountwe need at that time, then whenthe children come home, they bringmatzos with them. As for the wine,whenever we hear that someone iscoming, we ask them to bringKosher l’Pesach wine.

In the early years of ourshlichus we made the wineourselves, but we’ve stopped doingthat because it’s very hard to do.It’s better to bring the wine fromelsewhere than to have to watchover it in a crowded house which isfull of chametz all year.

As for meat, in Crown Heightsthe chickens are kosher for Pesachyear-round, so if someone is goingthere, they bring it with them.Shipping meat here has becomemore and more difficult because ofMad Cow disease, so we have tobring it with us or ask someonewho is coming and hope that it will

be cold before Pesach so we canstore it all on the porch.

We remember years that werewarm but just a few days beforePesach it turned cold and we feltthat the Rebbe was taking care ofus.

Leah Lipsczyz, Crimea: It’seasier for us now with the matzosbecause now there is a matzabakery here. In our first years here,we had to order them three monthsbefore Pesach. In the Ukraine, it’shard to obtain kosher wine. It’s alsohard to bring it from outside thecity, since the taxes on a bottle ofwine are sometimes three times thebottle itself. So we always try toask people coming to visit us toplease bring us wine that is kosherfor Pesach. For the same reason, wehave to give our Jewish guestsgrape juice.

As for the meat, today we havekosher sh’chita in the Ukraine, butthis too must be ordered threemonths in advance. But we arethankful to Hashem, because in thepast we had to import the meatfrom faraway and it wasn’t at alleasy to do this.

Miri: We have to ordereverything from Argentina. I can’tgive you many details, since as Isaid, last year we arrived rightbefore Pesach with everything weneeded. This year, we still don’tknow where we stand. I’ll just addthat we in Paraguay also have toimport eggs from Argentina,because in Paraguay they are full ofblood.

What takes place in your cityand country befoore and duringPesach?

Rochel: It starts with matzos.When we arrived, we ordered 15pounds of shmura matza for theJews of the city. Today, baruchHashem, that’s not enough and weneed 400 pounds for us and all the

Jews in the area. Every Jew, nomatter how distant, wants shmuramatza at least for the first seider.

We also operate an educationalmatza bakery here for children andadults. Before Pesach we produce abrochure with the times for B’dikasChametz and Biur Chametz, whenYom Tov begins and ends, the timesfor davening at the Chabad house,etc. We distribute these throughoutthe area.

In recent years we have beenhaving an exclusive public seideron the first night, which attractsthe upper class. This is also torespond to the Conservative modelseider that is extremely luxurious.For us it requires much more effortin light of all the hiddurim that weare particular about on Pesach.

hard to understand how we cancook without all the spices they useall year, but I know that if theRebbe wants us to be particular, it’sabsolutely possible and the food iseven tastier than throughout theyear. You have to be willing to cookwith ingredients such as wine, tosqueeze lemons or oranges, toprepare potato starch, etc. Thismakes it difficult, but the effort isworth it.

We also have to stand on top ofthe help when it comes to Pesachpreparations. There is no choice,especially this year, when I justgave birth. We also prepare aMoshiach’s seuda for ourmekuravim.

Shifra: On Erev Pesach we begindistributing the shmura matza toJews who live here and to tourists.Each year the size of our order thatwe make for all the mekuravim hasgrown. Last year we ordered 100kilograms (220 pounds) of shmuramatza that was distributed all overthe city. Who would have believedthat we would need an amount likethat in Madrid!

The problem is how to store thematzos when the house is in themiddle of being cleaned for Pesach.Last year, if my memory serves me,we divided the matzos in sevenhuge boxes in the corners of thehouse.

We produce hundreds ofbrochures in Spanish about Pesach.Sometimes I am upset that in themidst of all the cleaning for Pesach,the pages of the brochure are stillall over the place and the childrendidn’t finish organizing them. Ireally need their help at that time,but I am encouraged when I knowthat thanks to these brochuresanother Jew will come to the seiderand another Jew will know whenthe time for Biur Chametz is andwhen the Moshiach seuda is.

The brochure also containsforms to fill out and send in forSelling the Chametz. If thanks tothis brochure a Jew will nottransgress the prohibition of havingchametz because he sold thechametz in his possession, dayeinu.Of course we invite all who need aplace to the seider.

Leah: In the past we organizedten public s’darim throughout thearea. We brought dozens ofbachurim from New York, whodispersed and ran these s’darim.Last year, due to the pressingfinancial problems, we could notfoot the expense and we will haveonly two public s’darim. I hopethat we will be able to go back towhat we used to do on a largescale, may it be in Yerushalayim!

Many of the mekuravim come tous and eat with us throughout YomTov. They want to be moreparticular about Pesach, but due tothe high cost of Pesach productsand the poverty here, they cannotbuy these things themselves. We,the shluchim, have theresponsibility of helping them.

We also have a large Moshiach’sSeuda.

Miri: Since we came here justlast year, we have not arranged apublic seider, but throughout

Pesach we invited many families sothey could experience and tastePesach, the customs, and foods. Bydoing this, we continued the workof the previous shluchim that werehere, the Forma family.

We had Moshiach’s Seuda at theChabad house. It was festive andmoving. My husband spoke inSpanish and explained what themeal was about. I didn’tunderstand much of what he said,but I definitely felt the emotion.Now, a year later, I am fluent inSpanish.

Tell us some memories ofPesach on shlichus.

Miri: Here’s an interesting storythat we think about year-round.Last year, two days after we arrivedhere a few days before Pesach, ayoung man knocked at our doorand asked excitedly in English,“Where’s the rabbi? I need to speakto him!”

I was a little nervous, but Icalmed down when he beganexplaining that he worked at theAmerican embassy and wanted tomeet the rabbi since he was a Jewand had remembered that Pesachwas approaching. He wanted to seematza. Naturally we brought himshmura matza for Yom Tov.

WE SUDDENLY DISCOVEREDWE WERE MISSING MAROR

In my conversations with the shluchos, much was said about thefact that matzos and wine are hard to obtain. I am a shlucha inSaltzberg, Austria and I remember one Pesach when two hours beforePesach we realized we had no maror!

What were we to do? In the final minutes before Yom Tov, myhusband bought endives which are similar to lettuce but much easierto check. We added chrein (horseradish root) which we managed togrind, and that’s how we had maror for Pesach.

I’ll never forget the Pesach when Erev the Last Days the bell rangand there was a messenger from Rabbi Biderman, the head shliach inVienna, with a package of matzos from the Rebbe.

It turned out that he was from afine religious family who went offthe path. Over time, he has beengetting more involved with Judaismand he recently asked my husbandto buy him Alter Rebbe’s t’fillin! Itall began with his great excitementthe year before when he saw thematza.

Rochel: I remember a year whenI didn’t manage to kasher thekitchen at home and we cookedeverything at the Chabad house.Sometimes we had to bring all thefood to the house. The fact that Ididn’t collapse in exhaustion thatyear was solely thanks to theRebbe.

Shifra: In recent years aroundPesach time, you are able to findhandmade matza here in the stores,even in small nearby towns. I thinkit’s a holdover from the time of theAnusim (Conversos) here in Spain.

Leah: It was in our first yearshere. We couldn’t get wine forPesach and had only grape juice.My husband felt terrible at theseider because it was the first yearhe had to drink grape juice insteadof wine. He said, “Hashem, I am ashliach. Please make it that I tastewine in this grape juice so that Ifulfill the obligation to drink fourcups of wine, in the best possibleway according to Chabadcustom…” Apparently his prayerwas answered because afterdrinking the four cups he was a bittipsy even though it was only grapejuice!

This will be a special year forus. Most of our children willcelebrate Pesach here with usbecause of my son’s marriage. Mostof our children have already lefthome, whether married orunmarried, and are attendingschools in other countries. Oncethey leave the Ukraine, they don’tcome back so fast.

Do you take any trips on Pesachor celebrate Pesach with theexteended family?

Leah: We can’t go anywhere onPesach both because of the workwe have to do here and because ofthe expense. Above all else, wehave the responsibility of stayinghome all Pesach because, as I said,there are families among ourmekuravim who eat with usthroughout Yom Tov.

Rochel: It’s impossible. Asshluchim of the Rebbe we have aresponsibility to the Jews here.Even this year, when I’ve just givenbirth, I won’t go to stay with myfamily because we need to be here.Aside from this, most members ofour extended family are shluchimso we are used to being here athome, on shlichus, on Pesach.

Miri: There isn’t much to dohere since Paraguay isn’t a prettyplace that attracts tourists. As forspending Pesach with extendedfamily, even this year, when I’mabout to give birth, I won’t go,because we have a responsibility tostay here. Our first concern is forevery Jew here to receive shmuramatza, and at the end of Yom Tovto celebrate with a Moshiach seuda.

Shifra: Even if it was possible, itwould entail a lot of effort. It’s noteasy to go out with lots of food foreveryone when on Pesach we don’tbuy any manufactured products.We stay home and try to enjoy theYom Tov and our shlichus.

Any tips for our readers?

Leah: Over here, Erev Pesach,we try to remember and remindothers that “dirt isn’t chametz andthe children aren’t the korbanPesach.”

Rochel: Our second seider ismore personal, with our children,so that they can get our attention. Ithink that nowadays especially, thisis so important. Even if we had tomake a public second seider (at themoment there is no demand forthis since people are satisfied withone seider), we would bringbachurim and would devote thesecond seider to our children. Atthe first seider we just can’t givethem our full attention.

Sometimes, the shluchim holdfarbrengens amongst themselves.For example, recently, as the topicof achdus (unity) headed ouragenda, all the shluchimthroughout Eretz Yisroel, met atone time, at various localfarbrengens. This will continue totake place every few weeks, as perthe hachlata (resolution) made atthe last Kinus HaShluchim.

I state proudly that thehundreds of shluchim in EretzYisroel, we who run Chabad housesunder Tzeirei Agudas Chabad, livein achdus despite the differencesbetween us regarding the style ofkippa and suit and regardingpublicizing the Geula; despite thedifferences we are all brothers andpartners. We meet and farbreng,consult with one another and are

helped, and we are even willing toteach this approach to otherorganizations, to students ofChabad schools around the country.

This week I was at one of thesefarbrengens that took place at thehome of shliach Rabbi AryehFarkash in Yavniel. About twentyshluchim were there, each with hisview, but this didn’t interfere withthe family-like and Chassidicatmosphere and the dozens ofstories that were related. Here aresome of the stories that were told.

KIDDUSH AND HAVDALA

Rabbi Aryeh Farkash related:

A certain important family fromthe yishuv recently began gettinginvolved with the Chabad house. It

was usually the wife who led theway and participated in all theactivities and classes at the Chabadhouse, and the husband less so.

One day though, the husbandasked me, “Can you please explainto me how you make Havdala onMotzaei Shabbos?”

R’ Farkash wanted to knowwhere the man was headed withthis question so he asked, “How doyou make Havdala?”

The man said that he held thecup in his hand and after he saidthe bracha, “borei pri ha’gafen,” heimmediately drank the wine andthen went on to say the rest of thebrachos.

“And what do you do when yousay Kiddush?” asked R’ Farkash.

“The same thing,” said the man.“I drink the wine and thencontinue reciting Kiddush.”

“Why are you suddenly askingme how to do it?” asked R’Farkash.

“We recently asked the Rebbesomething through the Igros Kodeshand the answer was to be particularabout Kiddush and Havdala, so Iwanted to know if I’m doing itright…”

R’ Farkash went on to relate:

Recently, the wife of the head ofthe local council asked me to checkher son’s t’fillin. Her son was verysick. It was discovered that anentire word was missing, the word,“b’chol” (with all).

R’ Farkash explained to thetroubled mother that the word

“b’chol” is numerically equal to theword “son” (Rashi says this on thewords, “and Hashem blessedAvrohom with everything”). Sincethe word “b’chol” was missing,there was a problem with “ben,” herson.

The mother wanted to purchasea new pair of t’fillin and now wehope for the immediate recovery ofher son.

ELECTED

Rabbi Sholom Ber Schneersohn,a young shliach at the nearbySharona moshava, relates:

“Our moshava was founded bynon-observant people. At everymeeting of the moshava’scommittee, they announce that noreligious activities will take place inSharona. Nevertheless, a shul wasrecently opened and there is also a

gabbai, and this gabbai is veryfriendly with me and he helps mewith all my projects.”

One time, R’ Schneersohn askedthe gabbai whether an eiruv couldbe made around the moshava. Thegabbai said it was out of thequestion because of the residents’opposition to anything religious.

At recent elections in Sharona,the gabbai won first place.Immediately after the elections hetold the shliach, “Now we canmove ahead with your request foran eiruv…”

A TANYA CLASS IN ALITVISHE KOLLEL

Here is a story from Beit Shaan:

On a recent Shabbos, while wewere organizing the farbrengenafter davening, a young ben Torahcame in and joined us. He turnedout to be a Torah scholar and agood speaker.

“Although I learn in a Litvishekollel,” he said, “our rosh kollellearns not only Gemara with us butalso philosophical works, Maharal,and even a regular class in Tanya.It’s amazing to discover that youhave a G-dly neshama. We havepeople learning for decades whoare not even aware of theirneshama. We suddenly start talkingabout what is a neshama, the tensoul-powers, the garments of thesoul, the G-dly Soul, the AnimalSoul, etc. It’s fascinating and givesa new spiritual approach to life.”

We, the shluchim andmekuravim who sat at thefarbrengen, enjoyed this Chassidiclecture.

“I was just looking for a place tosit down and learn a little and I’mhappy that I came to the Chabadhouse. This is my first farbrengen,but not my last!”

LITVISHE ADMURIM ANDTHEIR SHLUCHIM

When I told my story at thefarbrengen of shluchim in Yavniel,nearly all the shluchim had similarstories. We saw that all the ideasand campaigns that the Rebbeinnovated decades ago, which hadmany detractors at the time, whobuilt entire ideological edifices tonegate the Rebbe, were now beingdone by all religious groups.

One shliach told about thestudents of a certain yeshiva whowore knitted yarmulkes who set upa regular t’fillin stand in the centerof their city. Another shliach toldabout Gerrer women who give outShabbos candles. A third shliachtold about “Litvishe Admurim” (theword “Admur” is used to refer toChassidic Rebbes) who dispense

blessings and counsel on issuesmaterial and spiritual.

I’ve already written about thechildren’s rallies that take place inBeit Shaan, and then there are theLitvishe men who go out on“shlichus” to secular kibbutzim tolive and be mekarev Jews there.Who would have believed decadesago that the same groups of peoplewho vehemently maintained that itwas “forbidden to fraternize withsinners because it will encouragethem” would now be formingorganizations and sending shluchimto kibbutzim.

“At this rate,” said one of theshluchim, “the day will come whenthe entire Jewish world, both theTorah world and the nationalistsegment, will proclaim ‘Yechi’together!”

CIRCUMCISIONWITH SWORDS

The Jews’ last night in Egypt,the night of the 15th of Nissan –Leil Shimurim – was a night ofopposites: great joy on the onehand and the fear of death on theother hand. In the Jewish quarter,the people packed their suppliesand prepared for redemption whilebeing occupied with slaughteringthe Korban Pesach and fulfillingthe mitzvos of the night. Theheavenly smell of the KorbanPesach filled the homes of all theJewish people.

In the rest of Egypt, however, itreeked of Gehinom and the Angelof Death – “there was no housewithout dead.” Everyone wasterrified. Pharaoh ran through thestreets in terror to meet with Mosheand beg for his life.

At the start of that fateful night,

the Jewish people went to Mosheand asked him why their KorbanPesach did not have the scent ofGan Eden, as his did. Mosheanswered, “Since you areuncircumcised and anuncircumcised person cannot eatfrom the Korban Pesach, thereforeyour sacrifices do not have thisfragrance. The sacrifice of whoevercircumcises himself will also emitthe fragrance of Gan Eden.”

Immediately, every Jew drew outhis sword of war and gave it toMoshe and he circumcised them(others say that every Jewcircumcised himself) and the bloodof the circumcision flowed with theblood of the Pesach sacrifice.

This action of the Jewish peoplecaused great pleasure to Hashemand He kissed and blessed everyJew, and from the homes of theJewish people one could smell thefragrance of Gan Eden.

WHY DID THEYCIRCUMCISE THAT NIGHT?

This was the final night that theJewish people spent in Egypt and itwas replete with mitzvos (theKorban Pesach and the lawsassociated with it) and preparationsto leave Egypt. Why didn’t theycircumcise themselves Erev Pesachor even earlier when they had moretime? Why didn’t Hashemcommand that they circumcisethemselves earlier? Hashem couldhave made a scent of Gan Eden thatinspired them to circumcise evenbefore that night?

Furthermore, Hashem Himselfcommanded Avrohom Avinu tocircumcise himself during the dayand not at night (as it says, “a boyof eight days,” and it says, “on theeighth day he should becircumcised,” and Chazal say that“days” refer to daytime and notnight). Why did the Jewish peoplecircumcise themselves at night andnot wait until the next day, whichwe see was nevertheless, pleasingto Hashem?

and not on the days preceding itwas because this way, the spiritualaccomplishment of the Bris wasdone in the most complete way:

A Bris Mila is a most loftyaccomplishment. It establishes acovenant of unity between a Jewand Hashem: the physical body wascreated from inanimate earth,which is the lowest element ofnature, and Hashem is the loftiestof all. By doing a physical act ofremoving the foreskin, an eternalbond is established between thetwo farthest extremes. A Bris Milais an incredible act which unitestwo opposites!

Therefore, the Jewish nation’sfirst Bris was on Pesach, anauspicious day for uniting Hashemand the Jewish people, for this iswhen Hashem descended to rescuethe Jewish people from servitude.In other words, it is the day whenHashem descends from his supernalheights to those down below.Therefore, it is a special day whichgrants the ability to forge thisconnection between Hashem andthe Jewish people.

It is interesting that it wasn’tonly the first Bris Mila performedby the Jewish people on the firstnight of Pesach, but the first BrisMila done by the first Jew,Avrohom, was also performed onPesach, about 300 years earlier.Avrohom’s Bris was the“foundation” for all futurecircumcisions for the rest of time.In Kabbala it is explained that fromAvrohom’s Bris is derived the abilityto bring about the sanctity of a Brisand to connect to Hashem throughAvrohom. Thus, the blessing recitedat a Bris is, “Baruch ata HashemElokeinu … who sanctified us withHis commandments andcommanded us to bring him intothe Bris-Covenant of AvrohomAvinu.”

This connection to Avrohom

acquired a special power when onthe same day that Avrohomcircumcised himself, the first day ofPesach, the Jewish people as anation were circumcised.

THE NIGHT WASILLUMINATED LIKE THE

DAYNow let us see why the Jewish

people were circumcised at nightand did not wait until daytime,unlike Avrohom who circumcisedhimself by day, as Hasheminstructed (and even though theywanted to circumcise before eatingthe Korban Pesach, they were notcommanded to circumcise, whilenot circumcising at night wassomething Hashem said not to do).

The Zohar (2:38:1) tells us thaton that night of Leil Shimurim, theworld was full of light and did notbecome dark. That night, Hasheminterfered with the usual forces ofnature and the sun shone as thoughit was midday.

From the Zohar we understandhow they circumcised at nightbecause although the clock said itwas nighttime, the reality outsidewas daylight. The inner meaning,according to Kabbala andChassidus, as to why a Bris Milatakes place during the day and notat night, is connected with thespiritual power that is necessary todo a Bris:

Various G-dly powers prevail by

day and by night (by day there isthe aspect of Chesed, and by nightthe aspect of G’vura). A Bris isdone by day because the G-dlypower to forge the holy and eternalconnection between Hashem andthe Jewish people with a Bris, takesplace in its optimal form when it isdone at that time. However, thatnight of Leil Shimurim, the G-dlypower of daytime (Chesed) shoneand the Jewish people were able tocircumcise themselves that night.

DAY AND NIGHTTOGETHER

Then how were they able to dothe mitzvos of Pesach, Matza, andMaror that night when thesemitzvos need to be done “thatnight” and not by day? In otherwords, there is a dichotomybetween what was done that nightin that the Bris, which needs to bedone by day, was done that night aswell as the Korban Pesach, etc.,which needed to be done thatnight. If that time period wasconsidered “day,” how could theyeat the Pesach, Matza, and Maror?If it was considered “night,” howcould they circumcise?

The Rebbe explains (LikkuteiSichos 17, p. 128) that that night,both powers prevailed – that ofdaytime and that of night. It wasobviously night from a halachicperspective as well as from aspiritual perspective (G’vura), butsimultaneously there prevailed thepower of daytime (Chesed).

Shimurim is that two opposingforces operated at the same time,and that is why the mitzva ofdaytime, circumcision, and themitzvos of nighttime could be donethat night.

Now we can better understandthe Midrash about the scent of GanEden from the Korban Pesach ofMoshe Rabbeinu inspiring theJewish people to circumcise. It isreferring not to the physical scentof a roasted lamb but to the G-dlyscent of Gan Eden that came fromthe wondrous combination of thetwo G-dly forces that operated thatnight, Chesed and G’vura. It was aspiritual scent of inspiration whichinspired the Jewish people to

circumcise themselves and to wantto cleave to Hashem for all eternity.

WHY DID THEY USESWORDS?

As a side point, let’s look at anunusual detail of this circumcision– that they used swords and notthe usual circumcision knife.According to the simpleunderstanding of what happened,they used a sword because that wasthe only permissible way to do soon Yom Tov. The halacha says thata circumcision can be done onShabbos or Yom Tov only if the Brisis on time, on the eighth day. If theBris is postponed, however, it doesnot take place on Shabbos or YomTov but is done the next day. Sohow could the Jewish people have

circumcised, on Pesach, anyonewho wasn’t only eight days old?

That is why they did the Briswith a shinui (change); they usedswords instead of knives, becausethis way it was forbidden onlyRabbinically and not Biblically, andthey could, therefore, circumciseon Yom Tov.

On a deeper level, we learnfrom here the greatness of Moshe.A sword is an implement ofdestruction and a knife used forcircumcision is an implement thatbrings life and peace, and is amitzva-object and is sanctified.Moshe was able to transform asword that kills into a knife ofcircumcision and the covenant oflife.

THE REBBE THINKSABOUT “PROFITS”

Organizing public s’darim arepart of a shliach’s routine. It seems asthough Pesach would not becomplete without public s’darim,which are attended by dozens andeven hundreds of Jews who do nothave a place to celebrate Pesach orwho do not know how to run aproper seider.

Twenty-one years have passedsince the Rebbe asked for publics’darim. The Rebbe explained how toarrange these s’darim so that theparticipants feel comfortable.

It was when the chief rabbis ofIsrael, Rabbi Avrohom Shapiro andRabbi Mordechai Eliyahu came tothe Rebbe on 27 Adar II 5746, aftera long conversation in which manydeep Torah topics were discussed,that the Rebbe said he wanted to

bring up something practical thathad to do with Pesach:

An effort should be made so thaton the night of the seider, all foursons will be at the taable. That is,even those who throughout the yearare far from matters of Judaism,Torah, and mitzvoss shouldparticipate in the seider.

Rabbis in every area, rabbis ofcities, rabbis of moshavim, andrabbis of neighborhoods, shouldorganize public s’darim in everylocation and invite all the residentssof that place, especially the children,to come and join the s’darim.

Rabbi Shapiro said, “As far as Iknow of the situation in EretzYisroel, even those who callthemselves ‘secular’ have a seiderPesach night.”

The Rebbe did not agree with thisand said:

If only that were the casse by thenext Pesach, but I know whathappens in New York, for example –that there are tens of thouusands ofJewish children who do notparticipate in a seider and they don’teven know anything at alll about theexistence of a seider.

Based on information about thesituation in Eretz Yisroel, on Pessachnight last year there were manychildren on several yishuvim orkibbutzim and also in bigneighbborhoods and towns who, forwhatever reason, did not participatein a seider.

Rabbi Eliyahu said they wouldpublicize an announcement torabbanim to look out for those whodon’t have a place for a seider. RabbiShapiro said that public s’darim wereheld in various places, but the Rebbesaid that he meant that peopleshould actually attend these publics’darim. With great sensitivity, theRebbe spoke about people’s feelings:

It would seem that thhis will notyet fix the situation since manypeople will be ashamed to say thatthey don’t have a pllace for theseider. Likewise, there are peoplewho will be ashamed to attend apublic seider for thiis would provethat they don’t have a seider athome.

The solution is that the rav of thecity, rav oof the moshav, or rav of theneighborhood, should have hisseider, along with his family andstudents, etc., in the main street ofthe city and invite all the residents of

The Rebbe said this would arousejealousy, and that even on Leftistkibbutzim they would want to have apublic Pesach seider. The Rebbe evensaid they should say that whoeverwanted to participate in a seidercould do so unconditionally, for free.The Rebbe said he would help withthe expenses and explained that hethought of the “profits” that wouldaccrue from it:

improved relations between childrenand parents, etc., then this can beextended even after Pesach reegardingseveral areas of Judaism, Torah, andmitzvos.

ENOUGH FOOD FOR ALLSince the Rebbe’s instruction,

Chabad houses and Centers beganholding public s’darim, though on asmall scale. The acceleration ofpublic s’darim among the shluchimbegan in 5749 with theencouragement and blessing of the

Rebbe. That year, thousands ofpeople participated in large publics’darim that took place in Italy andthe Far East.

The public s’darim that tookplace in the Far East were theinitiative of a lawyer by the name ofShaul Spiegler of Melbourne, amekurav to Chabad. He was friendlywith the T’mimim-shluchim inMelbourne and he encouraged themin the summer of 5748 to work withthe Jews in the countries nearAustralia: New Zealand, Taiwan,Singapore, Korea, Japan, etc.

The T’mimim went to thesecountries that summer and this laythe groundwork for public s’darimthe following Pesach. Before Pesachthey planned a public seider inTokyo and other s’darim in variouscommunities. Shaul undertook thefinancial end and threw himself into

the work of making it a success.Sometimes, in the middle ofimportant business deals, he wouldpick up the phone in order to get areport on the progress being made.

A few days after Purim, duringyechidus for “friends of Lubavitch,”Shaul told the Rebbe that he hadundertaken to finance public s’darimin Tokyo and the Far East. TheRebbe gave him a number ofimportant instructions: 1) thereshould be plenty of food foreverybody and, 2) they shouldadvertise widely, 3) they shouldn’tget there too late. The Rebbe wishedShaul success with these publics’darim.

“The flyers weren’t in Japanese, ofcourse. They were in Hebrew andwere distributed wherever we knewthere were Israelis. We met with allthose who knew us from ourprevious visits and we used word of

mouth which works well among theIsraelis there. It was definitely thetalk of the day for all of them.

“One day we were walking in thecentral train station in Tokyo withthousands of people. It was rushhour and hordes of Japanese rushedto get on a train. In a corner wenoticed a crowd gathered around aguy selling books who looked Israeli.As we thought about whether to go

over to him, he noticed us and heleft his stand and ran over to us andsaid, ‘What are you doing here?’ inamazement.

“We told him we were looking forIsraelis to join us for the Pesachseider. He promised to come and tobring all the Israelis he knew. Sedernight we discovered that he knowslots of Israelis!

“Aside from the flyers we alsowent to all the small hotels on theside streets, where hundreds ofIsraelis stayed. It was interesting tosee their reactions when they saw us.I would say it consisted of a massrubbing of eyes in disbelief. Theycouldn’t understand where chareidiJews had landed from. We invitedthem to the seider and many saidthey would come.

“The seider took place in thehome of Moshe Armoni, an Israeliwho had begun getting involvedwith Judaism following a visit byT’mimim the previous summer. Inthe late afternoon on Erev Pesach,dozens of Israelis began gathering inhis home. The house began to fill upand when the living room was fullpeople sat in nearby rooms. Lateron, they were in the hallways andthe latecomers found themselvessitting on the threshold of the houseand even on the steps.

“The seider was held Japanesestyle with people sitting on cushionsand pillows on the floor, realmesubin. Chopsticks were used. Theseider began at 6:30 and went onlate into the night. People didn’twant to leave. What began as aPesach seider developed later on intoa fascinating evening about Judaism– farbrengen style – with participantstrying to find answers that satisfiedthem.”

embassy in Nepal and were told thatthe embassy had already organized aseider for dozens of Jews, but, theywere told, many people were turnedaway due to lack of space. TheT’mimim-shluchim saw they hadtheir work cut out for them.

Some of the T’mimim landed inNepal before Pesach, determined tomake a public seider with room forall. Nobody would be excluded.Their first hours in Katmandu wereshocking. The bachurim who livedin the US and learned in Australia,two modern countries, found it hardto adjust to the way of life in the FarEast, where every technical move iscomplicated.

There are hardly any taxis andthere weren’t any in the street. Publictransportation was either a bicycle ora rickshaw, not to mention that thestreet was full of all sorts of animals.

The T’mimim quickly found outthat most of the Israelis were in theTamel quarter. They went there andmet groups of Israelis and discoveredthat although many of them wantedto cut themselves off from Israel andJudaism, they were ready and evenhappy to participate in a seider.

The Israeli ambassador, Mr.Shmuel Muell, a warm Jew whovisited the Rebbe several times,encouraged them. He warmlywelcomed the T’mimim and helpedthem out, first and foremost byproviding them with a car. Their firsttrip was in order to have their largeshipment from Australia released. Itcontained everything they needed forthe seider – wine, matzos, and otherfood.

Word about the seider withChabad got around, especiallyamong the Israeli tourists. Theshluchim soon realized that the firstthing they needed to know was howmany people would be coming. Theycame up with a simple idea. Theyfound out that Israeli tourists

frequented the Pumpernickelrestaurant. After several visits therewhich they used for Mivtza T’fillinand discussions about Judaism, theybecame friendly with the owner whoagreed to kasher his place forPesach.

They hung a large sign on thedoor of the restaurant which saidthose who were interested in joiningjust had to write their name on theflyer. Within a day one hundredIsraelis had registered. In subsequentdays the news spread to India andThailand and Israelis staying thereasked their friends in Nepal toreserve a place for them. As Pesach

approached, they saw that they hadto prepare for 500 people!

The shluchim experienced manydifficulties in preparing the food butby nightfall on Pesach everythingwas ready. The restaurant was toosmall for the huge crowd andadditional tables were taken out tothe yard. In one of the highest placesin the world, 500 Jews sat togetherto celebrate Pesach. The eveningbegan with Maariv and the seiderwas three hours of Torah andmitzvos under the direction ofMenachem Mendel Lipsker andMenachem Mendel Kastel.

THE REBBE SUGGESTS: MODEL PUBLIC S’DARIMIn a letter to Rabbi Dovid Chanzin a”h, one of the distinguished

Chabad rabbanim in Eretz Yisroel and director of the Reshet OholeiYosef Yitzchok, the Rebbe wrote in 1955 that it was worthwhilehaving model public s’darim for the students of the Reshet:

In this country in recent years they have been successful inshowing the boys and girls how a seidder is conducted, how the seiderplate is arranged, etc., and by doing so the laws associated with thhesethings become engraved in their memories.

In the letter, the Rebbe discusses the problem of varying customs:

Even though among the students of the Reshet there arre certaindifferences in customs – and obviously these shouldn’t be tamperedwith, as Chazal say ‘noot to change from the customs of one’sancestors’ – still, see to it to arrange it so that it does noot conflictwith their customs.

There are shluchim who hold model s’darim by way of preparationfor the public seider or in order that participants can make their ownseider. When many immigrants began coming to Eretz Yisroel, theChabad house in Rechovot, run by Rabbi Mordechai Kastel, organizedmodel s’darim in a spacious wedding hall. Rabbi M.M. Gluckowsky,the Chabad rav of the community in Rechovot, ran these s’darim withthe help of translators.

S’darim like these were held day after day with hundreds ofimmigrants participating each time. Each person was given thesimanim of the seider, wine, etc. Rabbi Gluckowsky went through theHagada as though it was a real seider, leaning on a pillow, drinkingthe cups, eating the simanim, and singing Chassidic niggunim inRussian.

I watched this take place fifteen years ago and I remember it well,as a project that was very worthwhile.

Everybody knows it. Israel is inthe midst of the most severe crisissince the founding of the State. Thegovernmental infrastructuresincluding the legal system are rottenand corrupt at their foundations. Thepublic has stopped believing itsleaders. The latest poll shows thatOlmert had only 3% support and theDefense Minister has 1%, anunprecedented state of affairs in thehistory of democratic nations. This isaside from the stories of corruptionthat we read about daily.

This situation is definitely leadingto the dismantling of the Zionist entitythat was established here sixty yearsago, which refused to even mentionthe name of G-d in its declaration ofindependence. Even new electionswon’t help. The best illustration ofthis is Netanyahu, who is consideredthe frontrunner if elections were heldtoday. As soon as he got a whiff of thescent of the top office, he ran to beinterviewed by the far-left Haaretz andbragged that he too would continuegiving away land and makingconcessions. In his own words, “Youknow that I made concessions in thepast,” which only goes to show whatkind of twisted beings we are dealing

The situation is grave, andeveryone sees that clearly. WHY NOT RETURN THEKOSEL AND YERUSHALAYIM?

Our sitting-duck Prime Ministermet again with Abu Mazen andannounced the acceptance of theSaudi peace initiative, in order to haveanother few months of quiet. Maybethe media will protect him from theresults of the Winograd commission…

Unfortunately, many people areapathetic and fail to understand whatdanger the Jewish nation is beingplaced in. The significance ofaccepting the Saudi agreement is thata Palestinian State will be establishedthroughout Yehuda-Shomron andYerushalayim. According to their view, then, firstand foremost this rule applies to theOld City of Yeruushalayim along withthe Kosel and all the shuls and housesof study there. For just as the nationsof the world demand the GolanHeights back, they more vociferouslydemand the Old City of Yerushalayimm!

As is well known to all, when theysigned the agreement at Camp David,the other side said they woould notspeak at that time about demands theArabs will make in the future, becausefirst they must get whatever possiblethrough pressure even though thispressure is only the “sound of a leafblowinng,” for if they stood strong, thepressure would dissipate. borders, including the return of theOld City of Yerushalayim, and thenthey will discuss what else they willdemand!

As was said a number of times, theCamp David accords are a “tzara thatYaakov (thhe Jewish people) neverbefore experienced,” and till this daythey cannot get out of the snarebrougght on by the signing of thisagreement. They gave over to thegoyim that most vital commodity,needeed both for the country’seconomy and for its security! Thenthey say, “we ate and will eat somemoree,” promising to give the goyimeven more!

They try to delude the public,saying that this will bringg the desiredpeace. You cannot bring about peaceby doing things which intensify thedanger of war bby giving your enemyweapons!

They expel Jews from the HolyLand for reasons of “justice.” It is notppossible for justice to obligate them toexpel Jews from Eretz Yisroel!

Hashem demands of the Jewishppeople that they conduct themselvesaccording to the Torah of Truth,especially when we’re talking abboutmatters concerning Eretz Yisroel, aland about which it says, “truth willsprout forth from the land.”

There are those who try to burythe truth in the ground and to them itis said, “truth will sprout forth fromthe earth,” for there is no other wayexcept for the path of truth, for thepath oof truth is connected withHashem, as Chazal say, Hashem’s sealis truth. This is the way that leads totrue peace – Hashem’s name is peace.

NONSTOP BATTLEHaaretz had an article about the

“There is Judgment and there is aJudge” campaign promoted by theInternational Campaign to Save theNation and the Land. The article says

that at first the campaign reached onlya few, but now it is picking up steamamong many in the religious public.

It should be made clear that thiscampaign is not meant to dancegleefully over those who haveresigned or are otherwise in trouble.The purpose of the campaign is toscare the leaders who are next in lineso they understand what price has tobe paid when the land is given awayand its people endangered wantonly.

The media is disturbed by howmany people believe there is aconnection between those who tookpart in the expulsion and their fates.The media is trying to bolster thosecorrupt politicians so that theycontinue doing as they have beendoing, realizing that when thepoliticians “get it,” i.e., concessionslead to the end of their politicalcareers, they will stop.

Unfortunately, it isn’t a belief thatwe have, but the reality. Since theRebbe told Katzav that he wouldpersonally confront those who giveaway parts of Eretz Yisroel to theArabs, we see how they fall, in themost unnatural ways.

Remember, those who are beingpunished caused irreparable damageto tens of thousands of people. Justthis week an article was publishedabout how the expellees still don’thave work, many of them are sick,and some have died of a broken heart.Regarding S’dom and Gomorra,Chazal say the decree was sealedbecause of theft, and as in S’dom inits time, the theft and robberycontinue, under protection of the law– and nobody speaks out against it.Whoever took part in this wickednesswill pay the price, so that we knowthat there is a G-d.

What has taken place in all thebranches of government since theDisengagement should serve as alesson in faith that there is no

happenstance in the world, andwhoever causes Jews to suffer andendangers their welfare will pay aheavy price. It makes no differencewhether people try to dismiss thisreality, for the reality is more powerfulthan their commentary.

People are ready to hear it and wehave to give over the message.

A horrifying double tragedytook place Friday, March 9th whichshook up Anash around the world.A mother and daughter, Mrs.Rochel Tzedek Schneerson ofKiryat Malachi and her daughterMrs. Yocheved Chein, were killedin a car accident at the YadBinyamin junction, not far fromGadera. Rabbi Aharon Chein, whowas also in the car, was moderatelyinjured.

The Cheins were involved inshlichus, working with theGeorgian community in Queens.Mrs. Chein and her husband wentto Eretz Yisroel in order to visit herfather’s grave. The couple and hermother were on their way to Mt.Olives in Yerushalayim on theyahrtzait.

The family left Nachalat HarChabad, where Mrs. Schneerson,lived and headed for Yerushalayim.

At around 7:30 a police carstopped on the right shoulder andthen their car stopped behind thepolice car. According to the police,a semi-trailer came up after themwhich, for reasons unknown, didnot stop at the traffic light andcrashed into them.

Mrs. Schneerson was killed onthe spot. Her daughter Yochevedwas critically wounded and wastaken to Kaplan hospital, where she

died of her injuries. The drivers ofthe truck and the police car werelightly wounded.

Mrs. Schneerson’s funeral tookplace that day and she was buriednext to her husband. Hundreds ofresidents of Nachalat Har Chabadstopped their Shabbos preparationsand took part in her funeral,stunned by thetragedy.

Rochel Schneerson was arighteous woman, say those whoknew her. Her husband had beenthe rav of a community and hewould bring home children everyafternoon and teach them Torah.She always helped him out. Shewas devoted to the Rebbe’s

inyanim.

Her daughter Yocheved receivedmany answers from the Rebberegarding shlichus. She stood byher husband’s side and their homewas always like that of AvrohomAvinu – whoever came waswelcomed with open arms.

When the community in Queensheard of her passing and of herhusband’s injuries, they werehorrified by the news. Yochevedwas the one who organizedgatherings for women and children.A family member said that not onlydid Yocheved die on her father’syahrtzait but she was also the same

age, 44.

On Motzaei Shabbos peoplewere told that Rabbi Chein was outof danger and he would probablybe released soon. He had brokenribs but he was improving. Two ofhis daughters were in Eretz Yisroelat the time of the accident. Thefour remaining children arrived on

Sunday in order totake part in theirmother’s funeral.

The funeral ofYocheved Chein lefther parents’ home onSunday evening. Heryoung sons walkedand said Kaddish asthe crowd criedalong with thechildren’s father,Aharon, who walkedsupported by familymembers.

Before the funeralthere were eulogies

with leaders and rabbis of theGeorgia community calling uponpeople to strengthen theirobservance of Torah and mitzvos.They asked the departed to arousemercy from On High for theresidents of Nachalat Har Chabadamong the rest of the Jewishpeople, to hasten the Geula.

Crown Heights was shocked tohear that a resident of the community,Rabbi Gedaliah Yerachmiel Shaffer,only 61 years old, had been killed in acar accident March 7th. R’ Gedaliahwas a learned Chassid and a Torahscholar. He was a computer analyst byprofession and the day he passed awayhe had been attending a work-relatedconference in California.

R’ Gedaliah was born in Boston in1946. His parents were descendents ofChassidim of the Tzemach Tzedek. Hisgrandfather emigrated to the USduring the leadership of the RebbeRashab, and their home was a fineJewish home.

R’ Gedaliah was extremely talented.He attended Yeshivas Achei T’mimimin Boston as a child and later studiedphysics in Boston University. Even as astudent in university, he conductedhimself as a Chassid and wasmekushar to the Rebbe. He had dailystudy sessions in Nigleh and Chassidusand was punctilious in his mitzvaobservance.

In 1969 he married his wife BronyaSlavin. When they had a yechidusbefore their wedding, R’ Gedaliahwrote in his letter to the Rebbe thatalthough he was in the middle ofwriting his doctorate, he decided tolearn in kollel after the wedding.During the yechidus the Rebbe askedhim questions in physics and then saidhe should not go to kollel but shouldcontinue writing his doctorate and tryto achieve excellence in his field.

In addition to R’ Gedaliah’sacademic studies and his general

knowledge, he learned many hours aday, Nigleh and Chassidus. In the firstyears after he married, he and his wifeorganized home classes in Long Island,and thanks to his general knowledgehe was able to attract dozens of peoplewith scientific backgrounds to theways of Torah and Chassidus.

In Kislev 5732, his father-in-law, R’Yosef Slavin was killed in a caraccident and R’ Gedaliah took on theresponsibility of supporting the entire

family. He worked as a computerprogrammer, but used his free time tostudy Torah. He got up every day atfive o’clock and learned, and when hereturned from work he continuedlearning. His home is full of s’farimand his family says that he was in themiddle of learning Shas for the thirdtime.

One of his friends who stood nextto him at the Rebbe’s farbrengens, saidthat after the Rebbe said a maamer on

Shabbos, R’ Gedaliah would tell himwhat maamer it was based on andwhat the Rebbe innovated on what wassaid in Torah Ohr and Toras Chaim.

Many shluchim brought their highacademic achievement mekuravim tohim so they would have commonground. When they saw a professionallike him who had so much secularknowledge and still lived the life of areligious Jew, it made a big impact onthem.

R’ Gedaliah was a modest personand beloved by all who knew him.Because of his vast knowledge in bothJewish and secular matters, manypeople asked him things and he wasgracious to all.

He was a great mekushar to theRebbe and loved the Rebbe with all hisheart. After the Rebbe’s heart attack onSimchas Torah, he only infrequentlywent for kos shel bracha and fordollars, not wanting to unduly burdenthe Rebbe.

His neighbors relate that onSundays there would be a long linenear his house and R’ Gedaliah wouldgive out tz’daka and help everyonecourteously. Together with his wife heraised a beautiful family, sons anddaughters who are going in theirfootsteps and spreading the wellspringsof Chassidus.

R’ Gedaliah is survived by his wifeBronya and their children, LibaGoldman and Nechama Dina Simon ofTeaneck; Devory Slotzkin of Zurich,Yosef Chaim, Basya, Yehuda Leib,Chana, Shaina, Yitzchok, and Michal.

Noam Federman is known asthe ultimate Jewish terrorist. Hewas incarcerated and put underhouse arrest for almost two years.Yavin interviews Federman and hiswife Elisheva. Elisheva is not afraidto speak her mind. It is she whosays he army should bomb theArabs. In the context of thedocumentary her words are thoseof an extremist.

In reality, Elisheva is a delicate,fair skinned woman, the child ofrighteous converts from Wisconsin.Not a very frightening woman tosay the least. All she is saying isthat the regular army should bombthe enemies who are bombinginnocent citizens. What’s the bigdeal?

And the image of Federman as aterrorist? The media covered hisarrest and detention. It was nothighly publicized that he wasdenied due process and evidenceagainst him never materialized.Eventually he sued the authorities,won his case and was awardedcompensation.

In his documentary Yavininterviews Arabs who dramaticallyspeak about suffering. I do notremember one interview with anArab voicing his goals and what he

considers legitimate methods toachieve them. The Arab attitude isprovided by Yavin himself. Forgetabout speaking to someoneconsidered an arch Arab terroristthe way Federman is considered thearch Jewish terrorist, Yavin did noteven speak to what they call Arabmoderates. To me this is anindication that Yavin has no respectfor Arabs. He seems to have apersonal vendetta with settlers andis using Arabs as he sees fit tofurther his personal cause.

For sure Yavin would notinterview an Arab who wouldadvocate killing Jews. Movieproducer Pierre Rehov interviewedArabs. He went into the prisonsand interviewed would be suicidebombers who were eitherapprehended on their way toheaven, or whose bombs did notdetonate. Just one of thoseinterviews would justify all thecheckpoints and all the curfewsthat Yavin has his audienceweeping over.

Rehov interviewed more thanforty Arab terrorist/bombers, menand women. All the bombers wereabsolutely committed to their causeand stated proudly that uponrelease form jail, they will repeattheir actions until they aresuccessful. They did not speak

about settlers. Lisa Magnas,Executive in Charge of Production,“Suicide Killers”/Contre-ChampsProductions emailed me, “Two outof over forty jailedterrorist/bombers mentioned‘territories’ and/or the Green lineversus other lines… Amazing, onlytwo.”

A flier at the JCC quoted Yavinas saying, “I was prompted to doThe Land of the Settlers… it is themost important, existential, fatalquestion of our lives.” In thedocumentary he claims it is thesettlers who are driving the Arabsto be terrorists. But Arabsthemselves are not saying that.Yavin is saying that. The JCC andits consulate partner, would do wellto consider allowing the Arabs tospeak for themselves, by promotingand screening Rehov’s documentary“Suicide Killers.” The DVD isavailable on Amazon.com.

Not all Arabs are terrorists. I donot know the ratio of Arabs whowish for prosperity and those whofollow the terrorist ideal. But we doknow that when the Arabs did vote,they voted for Hamas. Being aterrorist is lucrative, exciting andspiritually satisfying. It is linked toeradicating infidels, Jews and non-Jews, in Eretz Yisroel and aroundthe world. Terrorist attacks began

before 1967. To blame terror onsettlers is a false accusation.

The documentary runs forninety minutes.

As advertised Chaim Yavinhimself came up front forQuestions and Answers. The firstquestion was asked by the lady onmy right side, Helen Freedman ofAmerican Friends for a Safe Israel.She challenged Yavin about theright to be on the land. Yavinclaimed that there was no way tofairly determine who the landbelongs to. I blurted out, whatabout Maarat HaMachpela? Yavinwas not ruffled, he included MaaratHaMachpela with the rest of theHoly Land by saying each side hastheir legitimate claims. He wascounting on his audience to beignorant that the Maara was boughtby Avraham for his wife Sara, themother of the Jewish people, andbequeathed it to Yitzchok, her son.In his film, Yavin actuallydocuments the liberation of Hevronin 1967 and the handing over ofthe key to the Maara by the Arabsto the Jews without being asked.The Arabs know who the Maarabelongs to, Yavin does not.

Even though Yavin answeredHelen that there was no definitiveway to determine the ownership ofthe land, in further discussions herevealed whom he considers to bethe ultimate authority over the landof Israel… the United Nations!

Yavin also spoke aboutdemocracy. A lot. He said that thereis a well established school ofthought claiming that the only wayto retain democracy withoutloosing Jewish identity is a ‘TwoState Solution.’ Sorry, but itreminds me of the ‘Final Solution.’Democracy is nice, but if it meansthe wholesale murder of Jews, Iprefer no democracy. The Two StateSolution runs the risk of becoming

a one state solution because thestated Hamas/Fatah goal is tocompletely wipe out the allinfidels. In the Two State Solution,Jews would be the majority, butwould the majority of the Jews bealive?

If the Two State Solution wereimplemented, G-d forbid, the Arabswould be in control of thehighlands overlooking Tel Aviv andthey would be using it to launchmissiles and rockets. This is not aguess or an assumption. The Arabsin Gaza are using Gush Katif totrain terrorists and launch rockets.

This is reality.

Yavin completely denies that theArabs are dangerous. As he said tome, ‘Hamas has a few Bazookas.’Such a denial is reminiscent of theattitude of German Jews in theearly stages of the Holocaust. TheArabs have more powerful bombsthan Bazookas, and if they didn’t,why is Yavin so accepting of havingBazookas falling on innocent Jews?Does he have no compassion for hisown people?

And from the Arab point ofview... well, if you look at their

societies, voting is not soimportant. They tend towardsstrong paternal style leadership andhave not shown initiative towardsdemocracy. It is the Jewish liberalmindset that has to be satisfied.The concept of having the Arabslive a decent life, with opportunityand prosperity, but not voting,until the global threat from Islamicfundamentalism ends, would befine with the Arabs, but not theliberal Jew.

And there are Arabs who wantto live a decent life. They hate howthey are treated by Hamas andFatah. But they are trapped. Theycorrectly blame the Jewish andAmerican leaders for bringingArafat and his ilk back from exileand for giving corrupt leadersweapons and authority.

The Two State Solution impliesthere is a solution. A quick fix. Anunrealistic quick fix. Just as mostthings in this world, peace in EretzYisroel needs maintenance. Therewill be terror, there may even bewar. We cannot fool ourselves thatthere is a short cut. We needsoldiers, an army, a navy, an airforce, to constantly keep terrorunder control. To imagine that bygiving terrorists a state will makethem stop being terrorists doesn’tmake sense. They will see thepower and benefits in terror.Reward terror and it will continue.Why not? It’s profitable.

The security fence is not theanswer either. It has been veryeffective in curtailing car theft byArabs. That’s about all. The suicidebombing has been reduced bycompetence at checkpoints andintelligence leading to nightlyarrests inside Arab towns, methodswhich would be curtailed by theTwo State Solution.

their own state. If the Jews were togive all the Arabs full citizenshipand the right to vote without givingthem a separate country, it is fearedthat the Arabs would soon outvotethe Jews. The thought of havingmillions of Arabs in the countrywithout giving them the right tovote, upsets the Jewish democraticconscience. It reminds them ofSouth Africa. To a liberal Jew, thisis a horror!

However, the Two State Solutionis based on outdated, corrupt data.Recent demographic studies provethat Jews have outnumbered Arabstwo to one since 1967 and thatJews now have the demographicmomentum. There is nodemographic threat.

Michael Wise of the American-Israel Demographic Research Group(AIDRG) was at the showing ofLand of the Settlers. AIDRG hasrecently released a report called ‘ANew Demographic, Electoral andPolitical Paradigm for Israel.’ Thereport exposes the previously reliedupon Palestinian Central Bureau ofStatistics to having greatly inflatedthe population figures of Arabs inthe West Bank. With new, morereliable statistics, the AIDRGsuggests that political reformtowards a more modular, electoraldistricting system may savedemocracy in Eretz Yisroel byallowing Arabs to vote withoutresorting to the Two State Solution.

After the Land of the Settlersevent, Michael emailed to friends:

It was quite an experience. Likeliving on another planet.

The very supportive ManhattanJewish “intellectual” crowd lovedYavin. His documentary has beenshown three times on prime timeIsraeli TV.

Essentially he said that the major

obstacle to peace is the settlements.Withdraw from the settlements and wecan have peace. Israel is a racist stateand the Palestinians are simplypersecuted. Haifa and Tel Aviv are notillegal settlements because the UNauthorized them but not over thegreen line.

He said that his prime motivationis a democratic Jewish state and thatwe are almost outnumbered today withthe ongoing occupation of 3.5 millionArabs.

His next major work will be aboutthe Israeli Arabs. They are secondclass citizens and we must eliminatethe law of return for Jews only.

I engaged him in discussion afterthe Q&A [updating him that there arenot 3.5 million Arabs, but 1.5million.] He listened but nothing willchange his mind or grasp of thefacts/reality.

He said that the Mecca accordsnow allow the PA to recognize Israeland all past agreements. [They willrecognize them the same way Arafatdid, with absolutely noimplementation.]

Give peace a chance. [Been there,done that.]

If this is Israel’s WalterCronkite...May the Lord have mercyon us all.

The documentary mentions timeand again how different Jewishgovernments have tried to uprootthe settlers and have failed. Yavinclaims it is because the settlers arepolitically powerful. In thediscussion following the film hewas asked, “If everyone wants thesettlers out, including thegovernments, from where do theyget their political strength to staywhere they are?” Yavin admittedthat he did not know. He is as

knowledgeable as anyone, yet didnot know the answer. He could notidentify who it has been all theseyears protecting the settlers. Hedoes not recognize Hashem.

Throughout the film, Yavin isthe good guy. He speaks of peace.He contrasts himself with theextremist settlers who are portrayedas causing Arab suffering, which heclaims, incites the Arabs to terror.When I saw that Yavin wassurprised to learn that he wasfostering anti-Semitism, I realizedthat he might sincerely not realizethat most of the world will not seethe difference between himself andthe settlers whom he teaches hisaudiences to hate so much. Most ofthe world will not come away fromthe film hating a small group ofsettlers, they will come away hatingJews… and Yavin.

As the crowd was leaving and Ibegan distributing my handouts. AsI presented my booklet and anarticle on a bright orange paper, Ismiled and told people I mymaterial presented a different pointof view. Although it was clear theaudience was supportive of Yavin,most took the handout politely.There were a few, like the womannext to me, who would not dareeven touch the edge of the paperfor fear of popping their bubble ofadmiration for Yavin.

Two very upset women came upto me. One was shaking. She toldme that she expected thedocumentary to be negative aboutthe settlers, but not so negative.From her accent I could tell shewas from Eretz Yisroel. “In somesocieties they are waiting to hearbad things about the Israel,” shesaid emphatically. “We should notgive them weapons. We haveenough enemies, we do not needmore? Does the JCC understandthis?”
