Agriculture, Food & Rural Business
Those at the BoP living in rural areas face challenges substantially different from
those faced in an urban setting. Creating a livelihood for oneself is subject to
weather, access to technology, and one’s own health to farm the fields. The
questions that our finalists are looking to solve through their innovations are:
how do we support local farmers in an effective, and at the same time, an
environmentally friendly way? How do we use technology to increase agricultural
outputs to increase incomes? Is there a way to farm sustainably with an
increasing population demanding more at faster rate?
The following social enterprises are facing these challenges head on and aiming
to create sustainable business from the ground up.
Bhushan Agro aims to contribute towards rural transformation and 2nd Green
revolution of India by improving yield/revenue of agricultural lands in Sagar,
Madhya Pradesh. The Company is involved in agriculture using modern scientific
methods resulting in improved agricultural yield and productivity. There are
plans to set up food processing units to produce value added items. The
business model is to lease agricultural land from farmers at Rs. 8000-10,000 per
acre per year and carry farming using modern scientific methods, equipment, systematic crop rotation, and water harvesting techniques. The projected result
is an improved yield and 3 crops per year instead of the 2 currently possible in
that region. The revenue from agricultural activities per acre per year is
approximately Rs. 100,000 – 150,000.
Driptech is a water technologies company operating from Silicon Valley, with
offices in Pune and Beijing. Driptech produces affordable, high-quality irrigation
systems designed for small-plot farmers. The company distributes its products
through local governments, corporate partners, and NGOs in India and China.
Drip irrigation increases crop yields 20-50% and requires less labor and less
money spent on diesel or electricity for pumping water. With its proprietary
manufacturing technology, Driptech is able to produce and price drip irrigation
systems at least 50% lower than the nearest competition. Driptech is growing
rapidly to address the needs of the 600 million subsistence farmers who lack
appropriate irrigation.

Education
Despite one of the largest youth populations in the world, a significant gap
exists in the educational programs, systems and training centers to provide up-

Indian. The necessity, of skilling these future laborers, is imminent. How then do
