A Message from the Board President, David PetrynaThe 12.13 season was a season of celebrations. The season began with great excitement as the SSO welcomed its Principal French Hornist, Gilles Thibodeau centre stage to perform Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3. The celebration of our own musicians continued throughout the season as Principal Trombonist Charlotte Leonard led many of the SSO’s Brass players as members of the Northern Brass Choir during our Holiday Concert and Erika Nielsen, the SSO’s Principal Cellist performed Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 with the SSO during its Romantic Journey Concert. At this same concert, we congratulated Music Director Victor Sawa on his 15th anniversary with the Orchestra.

The season continued on a high note with enthusiastic audiences at each concert. A proud artistic moment for the Orchestra came with SSO’s World Premiere of its first commission in many years; Jason Noble’s À travers la fenêtre dans le ciel. We are especially grateful to the SOCAN Foundation, whose support allowed the SSO to enhance this premiere with an educational residency, allowing the community to participate in the commissioning process.

The organization also grew to new heights in 12.13 as communication became streamlined. Regular newsletters, as well as the addition of three musicians to the SSO Board of Directors, have allowed for continued information sharing throughout the community. These cohesive relationships continue to grow and ensure that the Board is constantly working towards the best interests of all of our stakeholders.

By all accounts, the 12.13 season was highly memorable and successful, both artistically and financially. The introduction of Perfect Pairings, a new, intimate concert format, brought new audience members and donors to the organization. The support of our continuing donors, sponsors and funders, as always, were critical to our success during the 12.13 season. Through these combined efforts, we managed to outperform our financial budget for the year. We thank you for your continuing commitment and support that enables us to fulfill our mission.

Thank you to the Board of Directors, Dawn Cattapan and staff, Victor Sawa and the SSO musicians and volunteers and the thousands of SSO patrons whose support contributed to a successful season for our Orchestra.

A Message from Music Director, Victor Sawa

The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra’s 37th season, and my sixteenth as Music Director, was one of my personal favourites.

We welcomed Sudbury’s own centre stage, as the artistry of Erika Nielsen, the Northern Brass Choir and Gilles Thibodeau were featured during concerts. The SSO was joined by my friend, and renowned Canadian Conductor, Brian Jackson for 2 concerts, while viral sensation Martin “The Video Game Pianist” Leung wowed audiences with his ability and dexterity. We were fortunate to perform the works of great composers including John Estacio, Mozart and Beethoven.

The season also included programmes that allowed us to focus on specific works and composers. Our “Great Classics” brought 3 complete symphonies to audience members; Beethoven’s popular Symphony No. 3, “Eroica;” Schumann’s descriptive Symphony No.3, “Rhenish” and Tchaikovsky’s powerful Fifth Symphony. Other concerts brought audiences on a trip to Vienna for Das Neujahrskonzert, and a trip to London for the Last Night of the Proms.

A new and exciting outreach program was introduced to Sudbury audiences. Entitled “Share the Music,” the Sudbury Symphony partnered with service organizations including Sudbury Youth Rocks and Big Brothers and Sisters of Sudbury to provide an affordable concert experience to young people and their families who would not otherwise be able to attend a symphony concert. We are delighted with the success of this programme, and look forward to making our music as accessible as possible to Sudbury audiences.

For making such a wonderful season of music possible, I thank the members of the administrative and artistic staff, the orchestra and volunteers for their hard work and dedication. I am also appreciative to the audience members and supporters, whose enthusiastic presence and support provided behind the scenes truly brings the music to life.

A Message from Executive Director, Dawn CattapanDuring the 2012.2013 season, the Sudbury Symphony continued to enrich and serve the community with a range of concert programming. In addition to the 6 concert season presented by the SSO, the Orchestra also performed an additional 43 outreach activities throughout the Sudbury area.

All members of the SSO, from musicians to staff, contributed to the responsible and balanced cost-control measures through the creation and diligent maintenance of efficiencies resulting in a better-than-budget year end result.

The Sudbury Symphony thanks our key funders as contributors to this success: The Ontario Arts Council and the City of Greater Sudbury for their continued and important funding. The SSO also thanks Glad Tidings Church, Season Presenter Petryna Advertising and the Local 180 of the American Federation of Musicians as partners in helping us to reach our audiences.

The staff and dedicated volunteers of the SSO are applauded for their commitment to the organization and for ensuring that the SSO fulfills its mandate and provides great concerts and outreach initiatives to the community as efficiently as possible. The SSO’s Board of Directors, chaired by David Petryna, is commended for their leadership, guidance, untiring support and commitment to the mission of the SSO.

A special thank you to Music Director Victor Sawa, Rehearsal Conductor Jamie Arrowsmith, and the musicians of the Orchestra, whose wonderful music inspires us all.

2012.2013 Artistic Achievements

World Premiere

The 2012.2013 season marked the SSO’s first commission in several years. La fenetre dans le ciel, an overture written by Montreal-based Jason Noble, opened the April 20th concert and the SSO was delighted that the composer was able to be present for this monumental occasion. During the piece, each instrument of the orchestra had the opportunity to take the spotlight, showcasing the incredible talent of SSO musicians.

Perfect Pairings

Led by the SSO Fundraising Committee, the Orchestra launched its Perfect Pairings concert in April 2013, devoted to enhancing the experience and appreciation of orchestral music. This intimate concert in a communal setting at Fromagerie Elgin featured not only great food and wine, but members of the Orchestra exploring their favourite moments, memories and music from the 12.13 season. In the second half of the concert, SSO musicians shared their hopes for the future with excerpts from the 13.14 season.

A great success, the SSO is looking forward to building on this concert and holding similar concerts in the future.

Featured SSO Musicians

Committed to highlighting its outstanding talent within the Orchestra, the SSO featured numerous musicians during its 12.13 season. Many members of the brass section, led by Principal Trombone Charlotte Leonard performed with the Northern Brass Choir as featured soloists at the November 17th Holiday Concert. Principal Horn Gilles Thibodeau performed Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3 as the opening night soloist on October 13, while the March 2 Romantic Journey Concert featured Principal Cello Erika Nielsen performing Cello Concerto No. 1 by Saint-Saëns.

Social Media (Podcasts & Video)

Recognizing an increasing audience need to connect with concert music outside of the concert experience, the SSO launched a YouTube page in November 2012. Featuring interviews with musicians, as well as information on upcoming events, this page has given audience members a new way to learn about the work of the Sudbury Symphony.

In February 2013, the SSO launched a podcast series. Hosted by Outreach Coordinator Nick Ross, the series features Rehearsal Conductor Jamie Arrowsmith providing guided listening experiences for each SSO concert which can be downloaded, or streamed online. This series has exceeded all expectations, with audience members using these podcasts to enrich their concert experience, or even choose their experiences.

Financial Highlights

Education & Outreach

The SSO continues its tradition of presenting curriculum-based music education programmes to the community. For the second year in a row, over 2,000 young people in the community were directly exposed to a Sudbury Symphony Outreach or Education Programme in the 2012.2013 season.

Continuing Programs

The ever-popular Tunes and Tales programme returned to the Sudbury Public Library in the 12.13 season, with two new books; Robert Munsch’s The Paperbag Princess, and Eric Carle’s The Very Quiet Cricket. Not surprisingly, the music-accompanied storytimes continued to be a success, drawing young children, parents and classes alike to encourage a love of literacy and an introduction to music.

Musical Encounters, the SSO’s signature Education programme, saw a steady increase in demand and growth during the 12.13 season. This programme, which provides an entertaining and educational introduction to music for all ages brought soloists, duos and quartets into classrooms across Sudbury to give an upclose and interactive look at instruments and music.

The Sudbury Symphony also continued to provide discounted tickets for Cambrian and Laurentian Music Students, as it has done in past years. Noticing that these students were often eager to bring friends or their fellow students to concerts, the SSO began to actively track the number of students and young professionals attending these concerts. This has led to the introduction of Amped Up! in the 13.14 season; a discount ticketing programme for those 29-and-under to encourage a new generation of symphony patrons.

New Programmes

The SSO piloted a new Outreach programme for 12.13 entitled Share the Music. With the help of local service organizations, such as Big Brothers and Sisters of Sudbury and Sudbury Youth Rocks, the SSO was able to distribute free concert tickets to those in our community who would not be able to access a live concert experience otherwise. During this pilot programme, over 100 young people were able to attend an SSO concert during the 12.13 season.

In addition to a new Outreach programme, the SSO also piloted a new Education programme in the 12.13 season. Wolfie Goes to School, brought SSO musicians into the classroom to directly interact with students. Using the life of Mozart, students learned about the challenges of composition, and what it might be like to be a musician in the late 1700s.
