is headed downhill. From fame and anonym-ity to art and deviance, the world of Graffiti artists is one full of dichotomies. It may be easy to recognize negative aspects involved such as obscenity and devaluing property, however many of these are arguably fabricated. Mr. Abillity, a New Jersey based graffiti artist, is a prime example these illegal artists working with positive intent. “What I’m trying to do is add value to stuff,” he said. “Art is a blessing, and I think it should be everywhere.” His unique brand of art includes depictions of flowers and recognizable cartoon char-

acters accompanied by a motivational quote. Graffiti brings controversy to all aspects of art. Is graffiti art? To people like Banksy and Mr. Abil-lity graffiti brings joy and value to mundane build-ings and bridges. However, this is not always the case. Most people in urban cities believe graffiti is nonsense. Graffiti is not a conventional art; the art is a dangerous hobby. Climb-ing high on buildings and bridges is risky business for a myriad of reasons. Many of which provide the pos-sibility of lawsuit on both sides of the law. Traditionally, many of us who see graffiti

around a city have mixed feelings of appreciation for the artistic value embedded, and a feeling that it has been misplaced; both in talent and physical presence.Like most things there is a varying degree of quality in graffiti artwork. Because this is widely subjective, it is dif-ficult to come to a consensus on what should be done to surprise vandalism/artwork.The current procedure in place to deter graffiti states that the vandal must pay for any damages caused by them and also may be liable for any preexisting issues that affect-ed the property. For example, a graffiti artist who vandalizes the side of a barbershop must pay a predetermined fine in

addition to the cost of repair-ing a leaky roof that plagued the barbershop prior. This is called restitution. In the film Exit through the Gift Shop, following someone as eloquent as Banksy and crude as Mister Brainwash shows how fragile art can be. Fighting all graffiti would be tragic, as some of it undeni-ably has merit. (Banksy’s work has sold for more than 1 million dollars at auction repeatedly)Conversely, allowing deviants to scribble all over oth-ers property like obscene toddlers would be equally as tragic. What should be proposed is a middle ground. Balance comes in embrac-ing artists and their art.

Changing the way we approach graffiti could be positive for communi-ties. A world where art is the enemy is one I do not wish to contribute toward.

Exit through the Gift Shop is an enthralling documentary and one of the most provocative films about art in recent years. One of the dense subjects in question is about graffiti itself as an art form. Graffiti can brighten a community and point out a paradigm shift in percep-tion of social issues when in the hands of a skilled and brilliant artist such as Banksy, who is featured in the film Exit through the Gift Shop. Yet Graffiti has a reputation for mucking up neighborhoods. Stereo-typically, it is generally a symbol that a community

Steve Ells, CEO of Chipotle, had no idea what was in store for his small town fast-

paced Mexican restaurant when he opened it in Denver Colorado in 1993. The food was immediately a big hit and allowed Ells to open two more locations by 1995. Soon enough Ells was able to expand outside of Colorado and all over the U.S. Ells didn’t stop here. He learned the as his restaurants started expanding how most food is produced and processed in America and decided he wanted no part in it.He immediately took action and partnered with local farmers and ranchers that were dedicated to raising livestock and growing products responsibly. This is when the “Or-ganic Chipotle” was created. “Food with Integrity” became the company’s words to live by as they continued to work through each aspect of their ingredi-ents. Their pork products were the first to be switched out to 100% naturally raised animals followed by their chicken products and then finally beef as well. Steve Ells stated “We are proud of our accomplishments, but there is still a long way to go,” in his short biography explaining his intent for his restaurants on the Chipotle website. Chipotle was recently voted number six in America’s Top Ten Healthiest Fast Food Restaurants by Health magazine. There is always talk about the amount of calo-ries in an entire serving of Chipotle but this is varies based on what is ordered. “Buffet-style Chipotle gives every customer complete con-trol over his/her burrito, taco, or salad” said

Health magazine. Customers can not com-plain about being given fattening food when they are the ones in control. This allows customers to skip the choices that may add more fat or calories to their meals however the counter opposite for others is that it does allow an over board of ingredients leading to a high in fat and/or calories meal. “Even if the meal is a lot of calories it is so filling that it usually accounts for my lunch and dinner, which would make it 800 or so calories for two meals which is not unhealthy any longer” stated Michelle Wat-son, local high school student and frequent Chipotle visitor. Ells is one of the only CEO’s in fast food whose focus is on quality over quantity. Of course there is still a focus on making sure there is a profit however Ells relies on his fresh ingredients to keep customers coming back. Chipotle spends around $32 million dollars in advertising which may sound like a lot but once compared with Arby’s, the small-est of fast food chains, $100 million dollar budget, it seems like nothing. McDonald’s the number one fast food chain has a budget of $650 million dollars set aside for advertis-ing alone. Ells prides himself in being able to spend so little on advertising while still hav-ing such success.

Whether you are a fan of chipotle or not Steve Ells is one of few CEO’s that runs

his business the right way. He is looking for-ward to the future adjustments Chipotle will continue making.

• Burrito, with carnitas, cilantro-lime rice, sour cream, roasted chili corn salsa, and cheese: “On the surface it’s not that bad, but anything with a burrito-size flour tortilla and sour cream has a lot of calories, sodium, and fat,” Kleiner says. A burrito built this way clocks in at 910 calo-ries, 40 grams of both fat and cholesterol, and almost a full day’s worth of sodium.• Soft tacos, with barbacoa or chicken, rice, fajita vegetables, and green toma-tillo salsa: Three of these soft tacos are 520 calories total, putting them in acceptable range for a proper meal. Kleiner says. “This has half the fat of the worst menu item, and adding the green salsa gives it nine grams of fiber, which is double the last meal.” There’s still 1,200 milligrams of sodium, though, so be extremely careful about your other meals during the day.

• Burrito bowl, with steak or chicken, brown rice, black beans, fajita veg-gies, guacamole, and green salsa: The best meal at Chipotle is one that skips the tortillas. This burrito bowl is a square 510 calories, 17 grams of fat, and an impressive 22 grams of fiber. “It’s got lean protein and heart-healthy fats that will give you a full feeling for longer. This is pretty good meal,” says our expert. Be sure to ask for half the normal amount of guacamole, as the dollop tends to be generous. lettuce, chicken or steak, black beans, fajita vegetables, and chipotle-honey vinaigrette: It’s a healthy 450 calories, and as long as you keep the dressing on the side, you’re in the clear with your fat intake. Again simply watching the amount of gua-camole and sour cream as well as cheese to keep your salad as healthy as possible.

The Rage About Juicing In today’s society dieting, losing weight, and being the healthiest you, you can be has become a major fad. There are million options to explore when looking to lose weight. Juicing however is an effective way to get started. According to the Dr. Mercola, an expert juicer and nutritionist, he expresses why juicing is so important for your health. “Juicing al-lows a person to take in a large quantity of vegetables and fruits they would not normally eat. The health association requires we get six to eight ounces of vegetables a day. However eating a few ounces of vegetables per day is a lot harder in our society today than drinking a few ounces.”

When you normally eat fruits or veggies it takes 4-6 hours before you di-gest, whereas drinking them it takes about 15 minutes. The juice takes that short of time because it goes straight into your blood stream and that carries all the nutrients to where they are needed the most by the body. When you juice vegetables and fruits you are able to retain all of the impor-tant vitamins, minerals, and plant chemicals that you can’t retain by just eat-ing them. These nutrients over all protect you against cardiovascular disease, cancer and inflammatory disease. The most important juice to drink in order to cleanse your body is green juices such as kale, cucumbers or celery. According to Gale Cobb, “The reason they are the most efficient is they contain a high level of chlorophyll which attaches to toxins in the body and help remove them. Along with that they also increase your bloods oxygen-carrying capacity, which in the long run increases your energy tremendously.”

“We started juicing five years ago and fell in love with it. I knew I didn’t eat enough fruits and vegetables and this was a helpful and efficient way to get it,” Mrs. Klein said about her and Mr. Klein’s juicing habit. “It’s a quick meal for both breakfast and lunch and we can have it at work and still do what we need to and get it done,” Mrs. Klein also said. In order to start your juicing process you need a juicer which usually cost anywhere from thirty to three hundred dollars. When you’re making fresh squeezed juices make sure you make a good amount that you can consume because if you let it sit it can fester bacteria which will cause food poisoning. Also always be sure to wash the fruits and or vegetables before juicing.

Dr. Mercola recommended five easy steps if you are just starting to juice. Step one is to start with simple veggies like cucumbers and celery one that you would be used to consuming. Step two is when you start to get more comfortable start to add new ingredients such as red and green leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, and spinach. Step three he insists you become more creative and go for cabbage and boc choy in your juices. Step four is to add herbs such as parsley and cilantro because they are extremely beneficial to your body. Finally step five, when you’re feeling ready, add kale or dandelions to your juice. When you want to shed weight naturally and fast start by cleansing with juices to give your body what it needs and wants.

On December 21, 2012 the world was predicted to end by the Ma-yan tribe. Even though the day came, and nothing happened, many civilians still believed that the world could have ended on that day. There are still many theories around the world about when and how the world will end. Some are focused on religion while other theories are based on Science. The most popular belief is about the planet overheating. The solar system may experience a solar storm which sends out a group of charged particles we know as light, but highly charged can create a major problem with the earth’s atmosphere. If this instance were to play out, buildings would be set to fire, telephone wires would explode, and communication through satellite would be down. Another common idea is that a virus epidemic will infect mil-lions. With today’s germ infestations in public transportation, schools, and office buildings, the likeliness of this happening is much higher. With all of the over the counter and prescription drugs ingested, the body’s immune system is becoming increas-ingly low. Religion also plays a major role in the ideas of the end. The Catho-lic faith believes that the ending will begin with many signs. One of the first is the four horsemen bringing war, famine, plague, and death. There will also be an antichrist that will come from the deepest pits of the earth. Afterwards, natural disasters such hurricanes, tornadoes, earth-quakes, and tsunamis will occur. Eventually the world will fall apart, and be recreated. The Norse Religion believe that the world will end with two of the most powerful God’s battling causing war and wreaking havoc until the world is finished. As uncommon as this idea is, the followers still believe. Many people believed that the world would eventually end, and they believed in their own ways how and when based on science or religion. Now some are even preparing for the end. “It is estimated there are three million Preppers in the U.S. alone, and the number is rising,” wrote Ryan Herman. The fairly new show Doomsday Preppers depicts the different ways in which these Preppers are going to survive through the hard times, and the way they think the world will end. They also rate how long the family will survive and the basic needs that are met and not met. They test the Preppers based on the basic needs first. The more food and water the Preppers have the better the survival rate. Many grow their own vegetables and have growing supplies of livestock. Survival and Hunting Techniques are also very important to survival. Every Prepper has at least the basics for surviving. Each Prepper is prepared for the worst situation, a long amount of time underground or away from social interaction. The clock is ticking! Are you ready?

t’s more than just a Prescr pt on. t’s a L fe sentenceAddiction is a loaded word. Many people spend their life savings on

drugs. For what exactly? They need to feed their darkness inside that longs for the high the drug gives them. The medical defini-

tion of addiction is a chronic brain disease where a person is dependent on something, such as a drug. Opioid medications have been prescribed for years to patients recover-ing from a serious injury or surgery. Sometimes people start taking the amounts prescribed by a doctor. But as they start to heal, and the pain subsides, they start craving the drug more and more. Then they start abusing these drugs and crave the euphoric sensation that the pills give them. They no longer voluntarily take the pills. Their self control declines and they experience intense impulses to seek and use the drugs. I recently watched a documentary called Unguarded on Netflix . It was about Chris Herren and how drugs took ahold of his life and basketball career and flipped them upside-down. Herren was one of the greatest high school basketball players the state of Massachusetts has ever seen. But with the weight of Durfee high school and Fall River, MA on his shoulders, he turned to alternative stress relief. In colllege, Herren was introduced to co-caine, and was instantly hooked. He was a real junkie at this point, doing many drugs and drinking hardcore. Even nights before gamedays, he would drink heavily. Then on gameday, he would roll out of bed and do a line of cocaine. After failing a few drug tests, he was ex-pelled from Boston College. Then he was offered an opportunity to play at Fresno State. Once again, the drugs messed up his life. He failed another drug test, and was suspended until he could shape up.

Finally, he cleaned up and finished his career at Fresno State, and played well. He was selected in the second round of the 1999 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets. He was doing great, until he hurt his leg and was forced to sit out the rest of the season.

Then he was traded to Boston, where his friends of bad influence resided. One day, he was introduced to Opioid medication. This took over his life. Herren became such a junkie that he couldn’t play games without the euphoria of the prescription pills.

Eventually, Herren’s stint in the NBA ended, but went overseas to play in many asian and european leagues. In these foreign countries, the pain meds werent as redily available. So he turned to the only other drug that could cure his withdrawal: heroin.

Heroin, is one of the most addictive substances, along with meth, and of course, opioids. When Herren started using heroin, his life started spiraling out of control. Eventually, his career ended and he moved back to Fresno.

Chris then started using crystal meth. Fortunately, and maybe unfortunately, he crashed his car into a pole and was arrested for the seventh time. Then he was put into rehab. They put him on dish duty, where he cleaned up, literally and figuratively, and found the passion to live again.

This is just one story of the prescription pill abuse turning into heroin abuse, and sometimes death by overdose. It’s a pandemic sweeping across the United States, and the Drug Enforcement Agency is having a hard time combatting it.

The problem with heroin is how cheap it is. Prescription pills cost between $20 and $60 on the street. But heroin only costs about $3 to $10. Rafael Lemaitre from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy believes, “It’s hard to talk about the heroin problem without talking about the prescrip-

tion pill problem.” He believes that prescription pill abuse almost always leads to heroin abuse. The saddest thing is that almost 50% of teens believe taking prescription pills is safer than using street drugs. In 2013, 15% of high school students used a prescription drug without the prescription. This is a very

dangerous number for all adults, let alone high school students. The numbers will only be on the rise, until these prescriptions finall stay off the streets. There are so many stories of teens getting hurt, or even getting their wisdom teeth pulled, and then given a prescription of painkillers. This eventually can

lead to an adddiction. That begs the question of whether or not painkillers should exist anymore. Should doctors jump to prescribing them so fast? Lawmakers are struggling with this idea, because people actually need these drugs.

Seaworld of PainBy Sam Ortenzi and Maddie Winget

“In 1970, more than 90 orcas were stalked and herded into a three-acre net by deafening explosives, speedboats and airplanes at Puget Sound, a deep inlet of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Washington,” Terry Newby a marine mammal researcher explained how they capture and take whales from their habitat. These horrific captures lead to the long term confine-ment and exploitation of orcas in aquariums around the world. Whales are like humans, whereas they have a strong connection with their family members, and when they are being captured they become very angry. “When an older male was present, the captured orcas cried out to him for help, but being in the same predicament, he was unable to do anything,” stated Terry. There was no way out for these orcas. Can you imagine being taken from your loved ones, and being placed into confinement for years? Baby orcas, were torn from their mothers as they were being captured.

These orcas never stood any chance of ever escaping from these nets, they were no match. Many whales that are captured from their natu-ral habitat do not have as high of a survival rate as whales that live freely. Lolita is one of the only whales still alive after 40 years of being at the Miami Seaquarium. Anywhere from 275 to 310 whales were caught, around 55 were transferred to aquariums, 12 or 13 died during capture operations. These numbers are too high, and the capturing of orcas is not safe for their health. BlackFish describes this controversy, and explains how the capturing of orcas is hurting humans also. There are many different sides to this controversy. Most people never thought about how bad the cap-turing of orcas was until they watched the movie BlackFish, they are opening our eyes to a new light that we need to focus on.

PHilanthropy for a cau EBy Kristen Ullrich

There is this common misconcep-tion of the wealthy as being selfish; most do not know just how generous some are. The Giving Pledge is an organiza-tion which helps to address society’s most pressing issues. The founders were inspired by the example set by millions of people who give gener-ously at great personal sacrifice to make the world a better place. This idea takes its inspiration from efforts in the past that encouraged and recognized givers of all finan-cial means and backgrounds The goal of this group is to encour-age the wealthiest individuals to make a commitment to give most of their wealth to philanthropic causes. Philanthropy is defined in

Merriam-Webster dictionary as “the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for other people.” Bill Gates and his wife Melinda, together with Warren Buffett are the trio who established this organization, making it public in 2010. The Gates have given away 95 percent of their wealth, while Buffett has given away 99 percent. The whole idea of the Giving Pledge came from the input generated in many conversations that Bill, Melinda Gates and Buf-fett had with other philanthro-pists in the U.S. and abroad.

Page 14: 2012014 Y 2 0 1 4 · The Rage About Juicing In today’s society dieting, losing weight, and being the healthiest you, you can be has become a major fad. There are million options

There are just two require-ments to be a member, one has to be a billionaire and be will-ing to give away at least fifty percent of their wealth. The pledge does not involve pool-ing money or supporting a particular set of causes or or-ganizations. The pledge asks only that the individual gives the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes either during their lifetime or in their will. Advances in technology and innovative approaches have made this an exciting time for philanthropy. Grassroot movements are proving every day how a single individual, regardless of wealth, can make a lasting impact on the lives of others. Each family or individual who chooses to pledge will make this statement publicly, along with a statement ex-plaining their decision. The point of going public is to talk

about giving in an open way and create an atmosphere that can draw more people into philan-thropy. Throughout the year, there are many opportunities for conversations to go deeper on the specific topics of interest to the group. At an annual event, those who took the pledge come together to share ideas and learn from each other. “We’re asking them to be bold. We’re asking them to step out and to do something big,” said Melinda Gates. The official website for the Giving Pledge says how this, “is an effort to invite the world’s wealthiest individuals and fami-lies to give the majority of their wealth to philanthropy.” Initially, the focus was on the wealthiest families and individu-

als in the United States. But since there have been enthusiastic responses to the Giving Pledge around the world, the pledge now includes people from a wide range of countries. Buffett has met with wealthy individuals in India and China to talk about philanthropy, thus expanding this organization fur-ther. “We’re hoping that Amer-ica, which is the most generous society on Earth, becomes even more generous over time,” said Buffett. This group hopes to be explicit about their intentions and want to help inspire conversations, discussions, and action; it’s not just about how much but also, it’s about the purpose. Each person who pledges makes an individual decision about what particular causes or organizations they wish to sup-port. Many have and will con-tinue to exceed giving 50 percent of their wealth and the hope for this group is for it to last for many generations to come.

Obesity: A Huge ProbleFast f ood chains causing a BIG epidemic. Fast food chains have been causing problems for years to not only our soci-ety, but to our bodies and nobody has taken action. The documentary, Super-size Me, has opened many eyes about the dangers of unhealthy eating.Supersize Me is a docu-mentary where a middle aged man named Morgan Spurlock makes himself a test subject of this docu-mentary about the com-mercial food industry. His challenge is rigorously eating a diet of McDon-ald’s fast food, three times a day for a month straight. Spurlock’s goal is to prove the physical and mental effects of consuming fast food. While doing this, Spurlock also provides a look at the food culture in America through schools, corporations, and politics as seen through the eyes of regular people and health advocates. Fast food chains are so attractive to us because we seem to have a neces-sity for sweet, salty, and fatty foods. Be careful not to associate the great affordable prices of these foods with healthy eating. Many consume fast food because of the great prices which make us not realize what we really are putting

into our body. This documentary uncovers how unhealthy fast food chains really are and how the greasy foods are a main contributor to obesity and other health issues. The health effects caused by obesity can be very critical, and some-times deadly. Imagine being so over-weight that you cannot get out of a chair because your legs cannot support yourself. Strokes, clogged arteries, and heart attacks are only three of the dan-gers of obesity, and can all be avoided by a clean diet, and exercise. A McDonalds BigMac contains 550 calories, nearly half of them coming from fat. 29 grams of fat are in that single burger. It would take a whole hour of moderate to hard lap swimming to burn just that BigMac off. Many people say to treat your body like a temple. And eating these greasy fast food chains’ food isn’t the ideal way to treat your body. Consuming 600 calories in one hamburger that has no nutritional value can hurt your overall lifestyle in the long run. Everywhere that is

travelable has become infested by McDonalds, Burger King, Arbys, Dairy Queen, and KFC. Not many people notice how quickly fast food chains are multiplying across the country and promoting an unhealthy lifestyle. Obesity is a sneaky epidemic on the rise, and many don’t see it coming. Constantly eating the un-nutritional, cheap foods at fast food chains con-sistently can add up to a lifestyle of that of a couch potato.

A sad fact of the cur-rent nation is that many Americans who are confined to a wheelchair, more often than not, don’t have any disabilities and just ate themselves to the point where being obese bought them a handicap sticker and a wheelchair. “Today, more than 95% of all chronic disease is caused by food choice, toxic food ingredients, nutrition deficiencies and lack of physical exercise,” stated Mike Adams, The Health Ranger.

“The problem is when that fun stuff becomes the habit. And I think that’s what’s happened in our culture. Fast food has become the everyday meal,” stated Michelle Obama. the first lady. French fries and burgers are loaded with fat and salt, and over-sized sodas and other sugary drinks are full of sugar. And most tradi-tional fast-food items are loaded with calories. With so much atten-tion on the relationship between obesity and eating out, has the fast-food industry improved their offerings over the years? It seems that the choices today are not that much healthier. Many industries used a substance called ‘pink slime’ to make their meat. ‘Pink slime is anything that isnt used ground up into one substance. According to the researchers, the nutritional quality of fast-food items has im-proved only a very small amount over 14 years. Portion sizes have continued to increase through the first decade of the 21st century. Top fast-food and restaurant chains continue to

introduce new large-size portions. Food companies are introducing bigger burgers, burritos, pizzas, and sandwiches. Some of these single-serving items contain more than 1,000 calories. For example, Wen-dy’s Baconator Triple burger con-tains approximately 1,300 calories and Burger King Triple Whopper contains 1,140 calories. Obesity has been linked to: hypertension, coronary heart disease, adult onset diabetes, stroke, gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, breast, prostate and colon cancers, dyslipidemia, steatohepatitis, insulin resistance, breathlessness, asthma, reproductive hormone abnormalities, polycystic ovarian syndrome, impaired fertility and lower back pain. Obesity is not only a health prob-lem by itself, but it can lead to other serious health issues. Fast food chains are a major contributor to obesity and more people need to know more of the side effects of liv-ing a lifestyle of fast food.

Baseball is the most traditional sport in America. Its rules have changed far less than any other professional sport. Baseball has always been a sport that relies on human error. The game itself comes with many mistakes. Whether it is the first base-man, the batter, the pitcher, and even the umpire, mistakes will be made throughout the game. Some mistakes however, can have drastic consequences in the outcome of the game. Armando Galarraga, pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, lost his chance of throwing a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning on a blown call by first-base umpire Jim Joyce. Miguel Cabrera, first baseman of the Tigers, fielded the ball, threw it to Galarraga at first base, and began his celebration. His joy van-ished when Joyce made his infamous blunder. Joyce mistakenly called the runner safe when instant-replay clearly showed that Galarraga had made the out, but this was be-fore instant-replay could be used by umpires. There was an uproar in the crowd, among the Tigers’ dugout, and even Donald himself openly showed that he knew he was out. “I just cost that kid a perfect game,” Joyce said in an interview with mlb.com after see-ing the replay. Galarraga should have achieved what most

pitchers dream of. He was ripped off of get-ting his perfect game because of someone else’s mistake. It is incidents like Galarraga’s that have cre-ated a push for the MLB to increase the use of replays. Baseball fans know that baseball is a game that relies heavily on the human eye. But the human eye is not always perfect. It makes mistakes. A meeting took place in August of 2013 for the MLB to discuss the expansion of the use of instant replay. John Schuerholz, president of the Atlanta Braves, and former managers Joe Torre and Tony La Russa proposed the ideas. They, and most others, believed that instant replay use is a chance to reduce the number of blown calls in a game. The meeting was held to lay out the new rules to test out this 2014 season. After much debate over the topic, agreement was reached on how to implement the instant replay in certain situations. Managers now have the right to challenge a call, just like in the game of football. A team has one challenge in the first six in-nings and then will gain two more from the seventh inning till the end of the game. If a team uses a challenge and wins they will

retain its challenge. However, there is a lim-ited list of reviewable plays so as to prevent excessive use of replay. On the other hand all home-run calls are reviewable without a challenge. On-site umpires will have the right to submit any home-run plays for review. The MLB has what they call a “war room”, which is a centralized, off-site location whose main purpose is to review all replays. The MLB got this idea from the NHL who per-fected the use of the “war room,” to judge the validity of calls. A seperate group of umpires man the war room, and inspect any plays submitted to them for review. These umpires relay their ruling back to the umpires on the field via headsets. The on-field umps then make the final call, which cannot be disputed in any way. Any coach or player that argues a call after review receives an automatic and immediate ejection from the game. Many coaches like the fact that instant re-play is going to create a better outcome in the game, but some can see the cons that come with it. Time is a major factor of dissenting opinions of instant-replay. Many believe baseball is already losing fans due to its slower nature.

Adding five to ten minute replays would only add down time to the games. Some fear this will deter more viewers and patrons. Tyler Mott, head coach of Ohio Wesleyan Univer-sity’s baseball team said, “While I like ‘getting the call right’, it definitely affects the pace of play in baseball... something that has been an issue in the past and will continue to be this way with instant replay.” Many instances of instant-replay use have already sprung up this season. As the Colorado Rockies played the San Francisco Giants , one Rockies player slid head-first into first base in an attempt to beat out a throw. The runner was initially called out by the first base umpire, but the Colorado replay review team informed manager Walt Weiss that he should challenge the call. Weiss formally challanged the call, which was then sent to New York for review. The call was overturned and the Rockies got their man on base. There have also been several plays this season that called for review, but the rules established did not al-low review. The new replay system is not perfect, however, be-cause of the availability of camera angles. If the angles the umpires view do not produce substantial evidence that the initial call was incorrect, the call will not be overturned. One such occurance has already come to light, as the New York Yankees took on the Boston Red Sox. One runner was called safe because the video evidence was not conclusive. Even though the runner was called safe, this flaw in the system prevented the correct call from being made. Instant replay will have effects on the game from now on in all aspects, including pace, quality of officiating, and sportsmanship regarding close calls. Instant replay rules will change over the next few years until it is perfected and set into place for good.

“While I like getting the call right, it definitely affects the pace of the game.”

Reviewable plays will be added and subtracted from the list until the MLB, the MLB Players Association, and the Major League Umpires Association agree on the final list. Overall, instant replay is a generally accepted ad-vancement of the game. Some believe replay will hurt the game and its profits due to the lengthy process. Others believe instant replay should be abolished because it has been proven that the right call still may not be made due to insufficient camera coverage. Adding instant replay review is a big step for the MLB. It will prevent bad calls to be made, resulting in more accurate officiating of the events, making manag-ers and players happy. This new system has changed the game of baseball dramatically. What once was a game of human error is becoming a game of technology and innovation.

THE ART

OF MISTAKES

There are few things funnier than when somebody royally messes up. This statement holds true in the sports world, where some of the most no-torious blunders have come from. Baseball, basketball, and football all have their collection of mishaps and mistakes. The scene was the 1993 NCAA basketball Men’s Na-tional Championship game, pitting rivals North Carolina and Michigan against each other. Michigan had a start-ing lineup of all sophomores led by power forward Chris Webber. The game went back and forth, with neither team tak-ing a strong advantage until North Carolina took a lead, 73-71 with 19 seconds left in the game. Then the blunder came. Chris Webber got the ball and dribbled across midcourt, where he signaled a timeout. The only problem was, Michi-gan had no more timeouts left. This results in a technical foul, which gives the other team the ball and a chance to make free-throws. Due to the mistake, North Carolina won the National Championship game 77-71 in New Orleans. Another major mistake in sports history is The Stanford Band Incident, engrained in the minds of all football fans. The Stanford Cardinals were playing the University of California Golden Bears on November 20, 1982.

The Cardinals had taken a hard-fought 20-19 lead with only 4 seconds left in the game. Stanford kicked the ball off where the Golden Bear players started to lateral the football. After two laterals, Golden Bear football player, Dwight Garner appeared to be down causing the Stanford Band to rush the stands in celebration. The only problem was Garner tossed the ball to Richard Rodgers before he was tackled. The Bears finished the play when Kevin Moen ran into the end zone while

the whole Stanford band was still on the field, causing confusion for everybody. The final result was a Golden Bears vic-tory, 25-21. When thinking about baseball blunders, one immediately thinks about the story of Bill Buckner. It was Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, and The Boston Red Sox were leading the New York Mets, 3-2 in the series. The score for Game 6 was 5-3 in the favor of the Red Sox. The score became tied as the Mets had three straight two-out singles off of the Red-Sox pitcher Calvin Schiraldi. The whole stadium held its breath as the next pitch was fatefully thrown .

A line drive was hit by New York Mets slugger Mookie Wilson, and all first basemen, Bill Buckner, had to do was pick up the ball and essen-tially the World Series would be won. However the ball rolled through Buckner’s legs lead-ing them to lose the game and two nights later The World Series. Blunders have their mo-ments in sports, and in some cases define the athletes that make them. However the beauty is, some athletes turn it around. Chris Webber started a charity called The Timeout organization which helps in-ner city youth. He remarked about his timeout, “It doesn’t bother me now,” he said. “[The jokes] do get kind of old though; I usually try to tell people, ‘Come up with something new. You’re not really a good fan if that’s all you can use.’ “ Buckner received a stand-ing returned to the Red Sox as a free agent, where he received a standing ovation from the crowd. That’s the beauty of mistakes, they can always be fixed.

A Sketch of

InovationBy Shannon Smith and Sami Hartman

Imagine going to work sur-rounded by large monument fig-ures of Disney Pixar characters. Envision arriving to work every day in business apparel, to create won-drous new things, though unlike Pix-ar, these creations are with numbers. Dream of walking around your work campus, with any tranquilizing ac-tivity that can come to mind; used to help creative juices flow and cre-ate room for expansion and beauty. Visualize priding yourself, and your com-pany’s integrity on the responsibility up-held each and every day; satisfying cus-tomers and creating happiness within the business financial part of everyone’s life. Pixar is a whole new world of talent and expansion. The whole building for Pixar workers is surrounded by large memorials of characters and objects from the films produced by the company. Throughout the campus, many different activities and cafes can be located, created to help writ-ers and creators feel at ease and relaxed. When being a creator of children sto-ries, one can run into the obstacle of writers block; these attractions were created so when this happens, they can go to a basketball court or café to get some food and release the tension. Many of the animations created at Pixar are vastly difficult to create simply be-cause everything within the film must be created, and be created to look real with age that it has been there for a long time. Very diverse from Pixar, Rea & associates is an accountant firm, with locations all over Ohio. Within the company, they have what is called the Rea way. This is basical-ly the guidelines employees follow to go on each and every day with the company. This firm is a certified public account-ing firm, which was founded out of the ashes of the Great Depression. Once banks were closed during the Great Depression by Roosevelt, Richard Rea the founder of the company, saw this as an opportunity for innovation. This is where the company began. Lat-er in history, this is where Pixar was founded. Started in 1979 by a graph-ics group Lucasfilm, then their success skyrocketed when signing off with Ap-ple Inc. and Steve Jobs who became the primary shareholder of the company. Once an employee joins the Pixar family, they are in for the long run. Around 45,000 people apply for each position open, yet only a few are chosen. This interview pro-cess ranges from around 6-8 hours long. The reason being once being interviewed, one will meet as many people as they can; making sure the new employee can get along with those around them since you are constantly working with oth-ers in these magical creations of Pixar.

Having a job at Pix-ar, one seems to never leave once they take

their first step. So being able to work and tolerate every co-worker is beyond

critical.

When Steve Jobs joined the Pixar squad and aided in creating the building their headquar-ters, he stated he needed a design that “promoted encounters and unplanned collaborations.” Now to-day, this is where most Pixar moments happen and is posthumously called The Steve Jobs Building. These very qualities can be found within the company of Rea & associates as well. Working with others is vital to their business, but making the customer their most happiness is the primary goal. This is the main trait both of these successful companies share with each oth-er. Creating trust and honesty is the primary goal, to feel as if they are working with someone the customer has known for a lifetime. The scenery of Pixar is extremely diverse from Rea. Within the building of Pixar, a 24 hour café, foosball tables, and a fitness center can be found around campus for employees. Also in the creation for their working environment, all bathrooms have been installed with only toilets on the 22-acre site. Conversations and interactions were purposely incorporated within the building plan of this Pixar campus.

Also provided for all of the employ-ees on campus, is an Olympic size pool, jogging trail, football field, vol-leyball court, and basketball court. Luckily there is an organic garden for those who desire a healthier lifestyle and Pixar chefs. In beau-ty, one can even find a wild flower meadow and flower cutting garden for tranquil places for employees to lounge and unblock their mind. Though having a career in account-ing or at Pixar, the same amount of responsibility and motivation for suc-cess remain the same. In contrast to Pixar, Rea & associates do their job in front of a desk, at a computer. Differ-ent levels of creativity are created within each company. Creating new beautiful things for each company, they each have their own sole purpose to provide for the society we live in.

To succeed within Pixar, one must have a child-like creative mind; have an imagination that one can bring to real life on a screen for families and children to enjoy. As for Rea & associates, their creativity can be found in the miracles they do for the ac-counting of their customers, and providing them with whatever as-sistance is necessary to live a bet-ter, happier, life.

Appearances contrast when viewing Pixar and Rea & associates. To work with Pixar, no uniform is required; whatever is comfort-able and unrestrictive to creative juices; whereas with Rea, business attire is mandatory, to uphold the professional expectations of this expanding company. In truth

though, clothes do not define how professional one is with the occupation they choose for their future. Every day the employees at Rea create something new every day, just like Pixar. Surrounded by a completely different work force, each job entails different skills and capabilities. Rea & as-sociates work in a cubicle office space; a business like building that looks respectable and professional.

“ “

Yet this environment is ex-actly what this companies need to be successful. Some occupations within this world require a more professional, strict, rule to be suc-cessful. Pixar is just as successful, and their employees are surround-ed by monuments of large Pixar characters and children games. Each of these elements for these companies are crucial for their own success. They make the company who they are today, and are a leading contributor for their past, present, and future success. Creativity can be found wherever we go; whether it’s a business office, or a free will com-pany; witnessed in different views and forms, this world will never stop creating to achieve success.

Autism: A Different DestinationBy Megan Wiedenmannott

Approximately 1 in every 68 children have autism. That’s comparable to about 10 kids out of a high school class of about 680. Autism is a collection of interrelated disorders of brain development, marked by difficulties in social skills, communication (verbal and nonverbal), and repetitive behavior. Autism spectrum disor-der, usually referred to as ASD, is the over-arching diagnosis for all autistic disorders. Children with autism don’t like places with a lot of activity, such as shop-ping malls, concerts, or filled-up sports arenas. In these types of environ-ments, they can’t block out everything else to focus on one thing that’s happening. It’s best to recognize the symptoms when the child is at an early age, so interven-tion and therapy can begin. Amanda Rector, a mother of a special needs child, said that since the symp-toms are mostly social-based, one clue that a child may have autism is that

he or she may not establish appropriate social skills at the age most kids do when they’re young, such as mak-ing eye-contact. The sooner autism can be diagnosed, the sooner therapy can begin. Children and adults with autism go through physical, occupa-tional, and speech therapy. “One technique some therapists use to help au-tistic patients to grow is letting them play board and card games with each other,” said Rector. “This helps them to learn how to interact with each other and develop basic social skills.” Although these children have autism, they all de-serve an education and an equal opportunity to learn. Autistic children have capa-bilities that are worth taking advantage of even with the disability. These children do very well when the ap-propriate accommodations are made to compensate for their autism condition. Some accommodations include aides who sit with them and keep them fo-cused, and often comput-

ers, laptops, or iPads that engage their senses more than a book. Although there are many options in accommodations that can be provided, some children, may not need any accommodations, depend-ing on the degree to which they’re autistic. “Because it is such a broad spectrum, there is a lot of help out there, like assistance and financial aid [in obtaining that assis-tance],” said Rector. Despite the significant investment in time and money for treatments and accommodations to sup-port their child’s unique development, parents of an autistic child have to focus on the abilities their child has and not what the child is missing. In Emily Perl Kingsley’s short story, Welcome to Holland, Kingsley explains the joys that come with raising a child with a dis-ability. She compares the experience to planning a trip to Italy and then end-ing up arriving in Holland. “But... if you spend your

life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland,” Kingsley said in Welcome to Holland. Parents of a child with autism must deal with the initial disappointment that their child will not be ca-pable of doing some of the things that a child without autism can do, but they get to see the joy of what their child does have to offer, and they are forced to see the world through their kid’s eyes: differently.
