1Retail giants in New York Citymay have enjoyed record salesthis holiday season, but a newreport claims they’re not pay-ing it forward to their employ-ees.

A startling joint report re-leased today by the Retail Ac-tion Project, a retail workeradvocacy group, and CUNY’sMurphy Institute for WorkerEducation and Labor Studiessurveyed 436 nonmanage-

ment workers in New York’sretail industry in fall of 2011.They found that race and gen-der played an important rolein determining workers’ payand working conditions.

For example, the medianpay for a female employee perhour was $9, while male coun-terparts brought home a me-dian of $10.13 per hour.

The study also found paydisparity among racial groups:Of workers sampled, the aver-age hourly pay of a white em-ployee was $11.30, versus$10.49 for black employeesand $9.45 for Latino employ-ees.

“It’s getting harder andharder to get by on these retailjobs,” said Carrie Gleason, di-rector of the Retail ActionProject. “Workers are seeingtheir wages and benefitsshrinking. [Retail companies]encourage turnover instead ofcareer growth.”

Jay Cole, an 18-year-oldAfrican-American high schoolstudent who works as acashier part-time at Abercrom-bie & Fitch on Fifth Avenue, told Metro he saw his sched-ule halved after working fivemonths at the company. Sta-tistically, black and Latinoworkers were more likelythan white workers to gettheir hours reduced orchanged without their con-sent, according to the report.

“The scheduling is no

good,” said Cole, who lives inBed-Stuy and supports himselfon his wages. “Now they onlygive us two days a week. A se-lect few get five days andsome new people get six days. It’s not fair. They don’t care.”

Abercrombie & Fitch didnot respond by deadline.

And then there were five.Former ambassador to Chi-

his bid for the 2012 Republicanpresidential nomination, teach-ing us that it takes more than anice face and Chinese as a sec-ond language to impress theAmerican right.

Fresh off the campaign trail,Huntsman is now perfectinghis role as dutiful understudy, borrowing a move from theMitt flip-flop playbook andpromptly reversing course onhis Mormon brother. Havingjust a week ago denouncedRomney as “completely une-lectable”, hunter Jon has nowturned around and endorsedhim, describing Romney as thecandidate “best equipped todefeat Barack Obama.”

Curious. Does Huntsmanmean “defeat” as in “on thefield of battle?” How else to ex-plain how he so positively de-

scribes the electoral prospectsof someone he finds totally un-equipped for victory?

No matter, it’s all water un-der the bridge now, as theHuntsman campaign has back-tracked on months of negativi-ty, rewriting attack rhetoricand removing the scathing an-ti-Romney Web videos it hadput together. (“When there’s aquestion about whether you’rerunning for the White Houseor running for the WaffleHouse, then you’ve got a bigproblem with the Americanpeople,” Huntsman had said ofRomney in late 2011.)

Romney is now probablyhoping the Huntsman bump issomewhat more effective forhim than it was for Huntsman.

Still searching for29 as ship shiftsA stricken Italian cruise linershifted on its rocky restingplace yesterday as worseningweather disrupted an increas-ingly despairing hunt for sur-vivors. Meanwhile, authoritiesraised their estimate of thenumber missing to 29 people.

As the Costa Concordia’sowners blamed their captainfor veering shoreward on Fri-day in a bravura “salute” toresidents of a Tuscan island, the giant ship slid a little, threatening to plunge itswhole gigantic carcass and2,300 tons of fuel below theMediterranean waters of thesurrounding nature reserve.

The slippage forced rescuersto briefly suspend their effortsto find anyone still alive afterthree days in the capsized hull, resting on a jagged slope outsidethe picturesque harbor on the is-land of Giglio. Six bodies havebeen found. Most of the 4,200

passengers and crew survived, despite hours of chaos.

An Italian coastguard offi-cial said the number of peoplemissing had been revised up to29 — 25 passengers and fourmembers of staff — from 16,showing how much uncertain-ty still surrounded the disaster.

Investigators say the shipwas far too close to the shore. The captain, who the ship’sowners said carried out therash maneuver to "make abow" to people on the island, has been arrested. The skip-per denies charges ofmanslaughter. REUTERS

Elton John and Madonna are inthe middle of a huge feud —and honestly, I haven’t seentwo queens go at it this hardsince “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

It started Sunday night atthe Golden Globes, when bothof the icons were nominatedagainst one another in the cate-gory of Best Original Song.Madonna was nominated for“Masterpiece” in “W.E.” whileElton was tapped for “HelloHello” from “Gnomeo & Juliet.”

When asked by Carson Dalyon the red carpet about thechances of Madonna winning,EJ quipped: “Madonna doesn’thave a f—ing chance.”

Then, when Madonna actu-ally won, Elton’s partner, DavidFurnish, went onto Facebook tovent his frustration. “Madonna.Best song???? F—off!!!” Not sat-isfied, he continued his rant:“Madonna winning Best Origi-

nal Song truly shows how theseawards have nothing to do withmerit. Her acceptance speechwas embarrassing in its narcis-sism,” he wrote.

Madonna won’t fight dirtythough, and backstage she wasthe definition of polite.

“I hope he speaks to mefor the next couple of years,”she said about John. “He’sbeen known to get mad atme so I don’t know. He’sbrilliant and I adore himso he’ll win anotheraward. I don’t feel bad!”

Way to take the highroad, Madge. You couldhave easily just pointedout that the manknown for such classicsas “Candle in the Wind”and “Rocket Man” wasthis year hoping to winan award for a moviecalled “Gnomeo & Juliet.”

Brand doesn’t play it coyIf you want to know how Rus-sell Brand is handling his splitfrom Katy Perry, you’ll justhave to come out and say it.Brand played coy when, dur-ing a press conference for hisnew TV series “Strangely Up-lifting,” a reporter simplyasked how he was doing, ac-cording to Hollyscoop. “I’mquite well, thank you,” Brandsaid. “Are you asking becauseof recent events? Well, I sup-

pose what you’re doing isyou’re making the mistake ofseeing time as linear.” WhileBrand tried to avoid discussinghis personal life, he doesadmit it will likely play intohis new show. “I think therewill be inevitable biographicalelements because you can’tspeak from anyone’s perspec-tive but your own,” he said.

America will receive its firstglimpse at Charlie Sheen in asitcom post-“Two and a HalfMen” in June when his newcomedy, “Anger Management,”debuts on FX, the network an-nounced at the TelevisionCritics Association press tour inPasadena, Calif., on Sunday. Butthe Charlie Sheen we’ll see willbe a far cry from the angry, out-rageous, self-described “win-ning warlock” who was firedfrom “Men” amid scandal in2011 — at least according tothe head of FX.

In the new series, Sheen willplay an anger managementcounselor whose antics arebuffered by the women around

him — his 13-year-old daugh-ter, ex-wife and bestfriend/mentor. John Landgraf, president and general managerof FX Networks, called this thekind of role “Charlie ought tobe playing at this point, in thesense that he is a character whohas a checkered past, but ispretty self-aware, and is strug-gling in a very honest way with

that checkered past and a de-sire to do more positive thingsin his life.”

Landgraf insisted thatadding the series to the FX line-up isn’t a “cynical publicitystunt.” He picked up the come-dy — based on the 2003 movie— due to the “really excellentpitch” Sheen and the series’showrunner, Bruce Helford, presented. It was so good, infact, the network has given the“Anger Management” team un-usual creative license — no pi-lot was shot, nor has FX evenseen a script.

“We’re a network that likesto take risks,” Landgraf remind-ed reporters.

There are two ways you canlearn a strict lesson in regret:Catch “Follies” on Broadwaybefore it closes this Sunday —or don’t. The plot is formershowgirls, decades past theirprime, reuniting in an old the-ater that's about to become aparking lot. The cast featuresheavyweights Bernadette Pe-ters, Jan Maxwell, Elaine Paige,Danny Burstein and Ron Raines— plus a powerful supportingcast belting out such Sondheimfavorites as “Broadway Baby,”“I’m Still Here” and “Losing MyMind.” It’s an extraordinary op-portunity to see a slightly olderensemble bringing their ex-pertise to the stage.

Slow to start, “Follies” is asimmering story of past meet-ing present that boils over inthe second act — when a giddydreamscape of the theater’sglory days almost sadisticallyunderscores the demons thathave plagued the four centralcharacters through the years.Despite brief illusions of rekin-dling ancient relationships, theboozy couples must ultimatelysober up from their unrealistic

what-ifs. Confronting each oth-er is only half the battle; it’swhen the mature protagonistsare forced to reconcile withthemselves that the true heartof this work emerges.

All throughout, skyscrapershowgirls sparkle in the shad-ows. A simple touch on an oth-erwise bare stage, these glitter-ing ghosts accentuate thehaunting atmosphere.

The musical debuted in NewYork in 1971 and was later re-vived in 2001 and 2011, receiv-ing mixed reviews until its lat-est moody, magical incarnation— making this one the “Fol-lies” you don’t want to miss.

After 15 years of executive re-cruiting, in 2000 Darrell W.Gurney reinvented himself asself-help author “The CareerGuy.” To use the parlance of theindustry, it was a successful re-branding.

In his first book, “Head-hunters Revealed,” Gurneywanted to share the strategiesof corporate placement agen-cies with a larger audience. Hislatest effort, “Never Apply for aJob Again! Break the Rules, Cutthe Line, Beat the Rest,” hitsstores this week. This time, TheCareer Guy is attempting to in-spire his readers to end their so-cial hibernation. And, aboveall, he stresses the importanceof informal networking.

“The minute your outreachto people is that you need a jobfrom them, you will getnowhere,” he explains. “Youwant to pull people in becauseof your passion and enthusi-asm, rather than [repel] thembecause of your desperateneed.”

Gurney points out that veryfew job opportunities happenthe way we typically anticipatethem. His advice: Stop spend-ing so much time applying forjobs and start initiating conver-sations with professionals al-ready around you. “Throughthe ‘front door’ you’re compet-ing with thousands of appli-cants, and you’re completelylocked into your résumé. Youcan’t get beyond your past,”Gurney says. “Through what Icall ‘the back door’ — throughrelationships — it’s the rela-tionship that comes first, notyour résumé.”

It’s well understood that aworkplace of similarly mindeddrones makes for a static envi-ronment. Also, it is required bylaw that companies be equal-opportunity employers. Butaside from the obvious and thelegal, there are reasons that di-versity lends itself to building astronger company.

Dr. James Smither, professorof management at La Salle Uni-versity, defines diversity as “thedifferences among people interms of their personalities, un-derlying values and training.” Itis these aspects that make apowerful team. “Deep diversitycan be beneficial to the team asa whole because it creates ateam with broader knowledge

and perspectives that in turncan enhance the quality ofproblem solving,” he says.

The benefits of a diversework force aren’t limited to theoffice. “The world is quickly be-coming one giant multiculturalmarketplace in which U.S. com-panies vie for market sharewith competitors across theworld,” says Peter Aranda, CEOat The Consortium for Gradu-ate Study in Management. “IfAmerican businesses want tostay in the game, they must be-come much more attuned tothe nuances and needs of dis-parate cultures.”

There’s a major epidemictaking over the mindsof young girls every-where: the princess syn-

drome. Jennifer Hartstein,PsyD, wrote “PrincessRecovery: A How-To Guide toRaising Strong, EmpoweredGirls Who Can Create TheirOwn Happily Ever Afters” tohelp parents understand whytoday’s daughters are strug-gling with bouts of both enti-tlement and insecurity.Today’s girls are groomed tolook outward for their self-worth, Hartstein says, and theexpectations for their looksand behaviors are flying atthem faster — and earlier —than ever before.

“Girls are bombarded con-sistently by messages — start-ing at very early ages — ofwhat’s supposed to be girly,”Hartstein says. “They get pi-geonholed into thinking thatgirly means pink and dolls andplaying house. There isn’t a lotof information given at youngages that promotes any encour-agement to play with trucks, orgo to science and math. Theyget very mixed messages all theway around. And those mes-sages start at 2, 3 and 4 andthen develop into concreteidentities as these kids get old-er. They may think that theonly way to succeed in life is tobe pretty, or to have the rightclothes, or [that] being a littlegeeky is bad and no one willlike you. They get this message

early on that doesn’t promotereal exploration of things thatmight make them feel good orbe excited — they get some-thing superficial.”

But there are ways to ensureyour daughter grows up with ahealthy mind-set. Hartstein rec-ommends the following:

Know what’s out there“Parents need to know whatmessages are being given totheir kids and they are also giv-ing to their kids. They mightwatch all these movies aboutthe princess being saved by the

prince … little kids think thatthat’s reality. You want to talkto them about how they mightbe able to help themselves insituations and really promote asense of awareness and waysthat they can be self-sufficient.And kind of piggybacking onthat, what are your own feel-ings about what those mes-sages are? [Kids] learn fromyou.”

Let her choose her interests“You want to encourage explo-ration in all ways. Don’t dis-courage your daughter fromwanting to play with what aretypically boy toys. Toys are toys.I think encouraging explo-ration of all that is really some-thing that parents need to beable to do and feel comfortablewith.”

Have conversations“Talk a lot. Talk about whatyour kids are seeing, what theirinterpretation is of it, what itmeans to them. Start those con-versations often and early.”

Get the whole family involved“Dads have as much of a rolehere. They’re just as impor-tant.”

Your little lady is inundated with messages on what it means to be agirl in today’s world How you can help her develop independence

Hartstein on ‘Toddlers & Tiaras’“What they show is thesegirls who are really praisedand supported becausethey’re cute and sweet,” shesays of the popular TLCshow. “I don’t care howmany of these moms say,

‘But theyhave a nor-mal life out-side!’ This iswherethey’re deriv-

ing so much meaning. Theylearn, ‘As long as I can makeyou smile, I will get what Iwant from you.’ What doesthat mean when you’re 13?... [The problem gets] biggeras kids get older.”

Cold playWinter winds can be dangerousfor kids when they’re outside.Use this guide to windchill —how cold it actually feels — tokeep your child safe.

Windchill: 32°F and upVerdict: It’s safe to playoutside.Safety tip: Dress your child inlayers, with a hat and mittensor gloves (and watch big kids, who may ditch their coats).Babies and young toddlers de-velop hypothermia fasterthan older children, so bundlethem in one layer more thanyou would wear.

Windchill: 13° to 31°FVerdict: Be cautious.Safety tip: It’s okay for yourkid to be out. But watch forsigns that he or she’s too cold, such as shivering or fatigue,

and take indoor breaks every20 to 30 minutes to warm up.Your kid’s body temperaturewill drop much faster if he orshe gets wet, so swap soggygloves and hats for dry ones.

Windchill: Below 13°FVerdict: It’s unsafe foroutdoor play. Safety tip: Keep him or her in-

side today. As the windchillfactor approaches 0°F, there’sa serious risk of frostbite.SALLY KUZEMCHAK FOR PARENTS

Enough with blame; let’s just get betterRE: “WHERE TO PLACE BLAME?”:Yes, let’s all continue to bick-er and argue and play thesetwo-party blame games witheach other like littlechildren, because that hasreally helped this countryprogress in the last fewdecades. Seriously though, can’t we all just sit down to-gether, discuss ourdifferences of opinions andcompromise? It seems to methat’s what a civilized socie-ty would do.TRENT SANER, BROOKLYN

What this country needs is asecond political party, not tomention a better-informedelectorate that gets informa-tion from the controlled me-dia. This country has been introuble with both politicalparties in power, especiallythe “conservative” Republi-

cans. Liberals posing as con-servatives has been our lotfor many decades, and themedia has spent billions con-vincing us of thesefalsehoods. Perhaps there isone candidate running forpresident who is not part ofthis media created charade. His name is Dr. Ron Paul.FRANK ST. GEORGE, EAST ROCKAWAY

Let’s hear the truth aboutRon Paul. Yes he wants tocut the FDA, the EPA andthe OSHA. He also wants toend the overseas and drugwars, corporate welfare(subsidies and bailouts), theFederal Reserve bank andthe futile Department of Ed-ucation. These cuts willsave us trillions, essentiallybailing out the private sec-tor by letting us keep ourmoney, along withrestoring the value of the

dollar. In response to Cud-dy’s argument, the 14thAmendment guarantees thebill of rights applies toeverybody, so concerns thatsomehow local state govern-ments will become dictator-ships are unfounded. DREW HOUSER, VIA E-MAIL

RE: “URINATION VID STIRS ANTI-US OUTRAGE ABROAD”: There issuch an uproar about the sol-diers who urinated on thedead terrorists. Two things:First, they were dead. Andsecond, they were terrorists!Maybe we should ask thepeople who lost loved oneson 9/11 what they thinkabout it. I’m sure they aren’ttoo upset. When we killed

bin Laden, we should’vebrought his body to GroundZero and set up a booth tourinate on him and charge$100 dollars per person. Oureconomy would’ve rebound-ed right away. Millionswould have been generated, tourism would’ve increasedtenfold.ROBERT LA ROSA, WHITESTONE

Music in Morocco

One day after a monumentalupset — in a decidedly mat-ter-of-fact way — the Giantswere still getting used to be-ing just one game away fromthe Super Bowl.

“The guys on this teamhave been phenomenal allyear,” wide receiver VictorCruz said. “We understandthis is a special time for usand we have to take advan-tage of it and soak in all thetime and be ready to play thisupcoming weekend.”

To say it’s been an incredi-ble turnaround would be anunderstatement. It was justsix weeks ago this team wason a four-game losing streak. And even after that, less thana month ago, the team wasfacing an elimination gameon Christmas Eve against theJets. Head coach Tom Cough-lin was on the hot seat andfans had already replaced de-fensive coordinator PerryFewell with Steve Spanuolo intheir minds.

Now, they’re preparing foran NFC championship game.

“The ride didn’t go the wayyou wanted it to go, but wedid what we set out to do thisseason, which is to win our di-vision and have a chance to

play in the postseason,” safetyAntrel Rolle said. “We grantedourselves that wish and we’vebeen playing great ball.”

To say the team is playingwith a high level of confi-dence would be an under-

statement.“We wouldn’t say we’re un-

stoppable, but our mindset isextreme at this point,” Rollesaid. “We’re not going to bedenied. That’s our mindset. Imight be a little biased, but in

our minds we can’t be beat.We have one goal in mind,

which is to win the champi-onship.”

The Knicks dropped their third-straight game, 102-93 to theMagic, in their annual MartinLuther King Day matinee. Butdon’t blame their defense.

As hot as Orlando was from

the perimeter, shooting an as-tounding 17-of-35 from behindthe arc, Dwight Howard washeld to just eight points on 3-of-6 shooting before fouling outlate in the game largely due to

Tyson Chandler.Too bad the offense didn’t

comply.“Dwight didn’t play one of

his particularly great gamesand we did a great job at han-

dling him,” said Amar’eStoudemire. “But they stillknocked down the open out-side shots and did a great job ofmoving the ball.”

Ultimately, there weren’tenough Chandlers on the floordefensively and not enoughtenacious shooters offensively.

“Give them credit, they hadsome tough looks and theymade them, [but] we missed alot of coverages. There were toomany times when we switchedlate or didn’t cover each other. There are steps we need totake,” said coach Mike D’An-toni, adding his main issue wasCarmelo Anthony was as aloneoffensively as Chandler was de-fensively. “It’s not like [Antho-ny] is looking around thinking,‘I need to pass it.’ We just don’thave guys out there who are ag-gressive enough.”

Credit Card Debt?Solutions that can help you get out of debt.Tom Hill CGA STAFF WRITER

Every three minutes another person falls behind on credit card debt. It’s no wonder, since every major credit card company has nearly doubled the minimum monthly payment on consumers’ bills. Federal Regulators forced the change because of their concern about the growing mountain of consumer debt, which stands at $2.17 trillion. Many consumers can only pay the minimum payment, which can take up to 30 years to pay off. Now, relief is in sight for millions of Americans.

CreditGUARD of America, a non-profit licensed debt management service provider, is making a new program available to lower debt payments and become free of all credit card debt in only three to five years. Consumers need only $2,000 or more in total credit card debt and behind on any account, to cut their payment by 35% to 50%, and reduce or eliminate interest charges altogether.

Over 200,000 families, located throughout the U.S. have regained financial independence with CreditGUARD’s licensed, bonded and insured service. CreditGUARD of America has received high marks in consumer surveys showing high consumer satisfaction and confidence. The CreditGUARD debt management program can actually turn a person’s life around.

One such case is Sandra L. who proclaimed “CreditGUARD cut my monthly payment by $656 and saved me over $29,206.53 in interest. They saved my way of life and gave me back my piece of mind! Now I can see myself on my way to becoming debt free.” or Jeffery C. who said “CreditGUARD of America helped me consolidate 3 of my credit cards into one affordable payment. They are now saving me nearly $200 a month. Now I will be debt free in 2 years or less”
