MAL M. MOOREA T H L E T I C S D I R E C T O R

Th e University of Alabama’s Director of Athlet-ics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically while enjoying an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure.

Th rough his guidance, Alabama’s athletic depart-ment remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic facilities at the Cap-stone to premier status nationally for all sports.

During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 million of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic facilities. Th ose projects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have benefi tted every Alabama student-athlete, coach, and ad-ministrator.

Th roughout his multi-faceted career, Moore has worked with a diversifi ed fi eld of constituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the busi-ness community. All of those experiences and relationships - in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century.

His leadership has been crucial in helping guide Alabama through a period that has been, at times, extremely challenging. His guidance and eff ort helped Alabama athletics weather the storm, while continuing to move in a positive direction toward a future that holds great promise.

Moore’s dedication to, and love of, the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when as a permanent tribute to his lifelong contributions to Th e University of Alabama, the Board of Trustees of Th e University of Ala-bama System offi cially dedicated the facility formerly known as Th e Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.

Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced three nation-al championships – the 2009 football title and the 2002 and 2011 NCAA gym-nastics championships – as well as several Southeastern Conference champion-ships, winning titles in football, gymnastics, men’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s golf, men’s cross country, baseball and softball; taking SEC tournament titles in both baseball and softball. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to off er, including SEC Athlete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. Th ese honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes con-tinue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis.

In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore has also had a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football com-mittees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee and the Big Six Confer-ences Minority Coaches Forum.

Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinction of being a part of eight national championship teams (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992 and 2009) with the fi rst coming as a player, the next six during his coaching career and the most recent during his tenure as director of athletics. As a player and coach, he was also part of 14 SEC championships and 27 bowl trips. He is the only individual connected with the Alabama program to be a part of eight national championships.

During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Alabama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals. At Alabama, Moore started as a graduate assistant under Coach Bryant in 1964, then as defensive backfi eld coach for six seasons (1965-70) before becoming quarterbacks coach from 1971-82, serving as the Tide’s fi rst off ensive coordinator starting in 1975. He would go on to coordinate all of the off ensive plays for several of Alabama’s national championship football teams.

A 1963 graduate of Th e University of Alabama, Moore holds both an under-graduate degree in sociology and a 1964 Master’s degree in secondary education from the Capstone. Moore was born December 19, 1939, in Dozier, Ala. He and the late Mrs. Charlotte Moore have one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

For Head Coach Jenny Mainz and her teams it has always been about unity and competing with one heartbeat. As she enters her 15th season at Alabama, things will be no diff erent as this year’s squad has already, and will continue to, play to-gether and make self-sacrifi ces for the betterment of the team.

“We pride ourselves on the commitment, work ethic and enthusiasm we play with day-in and day-out,” Mainz said. “I believe our players have a contagious spirit. Th ey truly enjoy and respect the game of tennis, and they take tremendous pride in being ambassadors for the University of Ala-bama. Th ey recognize and appreciate the oppor-tunity to wear the Alabama jersey and compete with dignity and class.”

Mainz’s teams have had tremendous success both on and off the court, which is something she takes great pride in. From the moment a student-athlete steps foot on campus, Mainz and her staff work diligently to assist in developing student-athletes to their greatest potential.

“I’m most proud of the fact that we have consis-tently attracted individuals whose character and integrity are unparalleled.” Mainz added. “We’ve been fortunate to have student-athletes involved in our program that are highly motivated, have exceptional leadership qualities and have em-braced the chance to positively impact our tennis program.”

Th roughout her tenure at the Capstone, Mainz has coached four Academic All-Americans, the 2011 Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Courtney McLane, and a host of SEC Honor Roll recipients. She has also seen her teams excel together earning the University’s highest GPA award among Alabama’s varsity sports six times since 2002, including the 2008 title, which the team earned with a combined overall 3.51 grade point average.“Alabama continues to grow, advance and make steady progress in the direction of being the fi n-est and most reputable university in the country,”

Mainz stated. “President Witt and Mal Moore’s commitment to attract and recruit the best and the brightest is evidenced in the impressive, fi rst-class facilities, the extraordinary growth in enroll-ment and faculty and staff and the notable aca-demic standards that continue to strengthen.”

Mainz, the only coach in Alabama history to take the Crimson Tide to six consecutive NCAA Tour-naments, helped Robin Stephenson earn 2005 All-American status in singles, becoming just the second player in Tide history to do so.

Under Mainz’s direction, Alabama has had eight top-40 fi nishes as a team, while 14 singles players and eight doubles teams have fi nished the season ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. In the 2011 preseason doubles rankings, Mainz’s talented duo of Alexa Guarachi and Courtney McLane captured the highest ranking in program history as they began the fall season at No. 2 in the nation.

Mainz has had much success in her years at Ala-bama, but 2011 was perhaps the most success-ful. It was evident Mainz was putting something special together early on when the Tide went to the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Champion-ships and swept both the singles and doubles titles which granted Alabama a spot in the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y. Th at success continued on into dual match play where the Tide went 15-5 in the regular season en route to capturing the 2011 SEC Western Division title.

A host of Alabama representatives were hon-ored at the conclusion of the season as Mainz was named SEC Coach of the Year, Mary Anne Macfarlane the league’s Freshman of the Year and McLane taking home SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition. Macfarlane was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and the All-SEC First Team, where she was joined by Guarachi, while McLane garnered All-SEC Second Team honors. In addition, Mainz was named the ITA Southern Region Coach of the Year, Macfarlane the ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year and Guara-chi the ITA Southern Region Player to Watch.

Th e 2010 season was one of many injuries for Alabama, which came on the heels of another

successful season under Mainz as she saw her team reach No. 16 in the nation in 2009. Th e Tide fi n-ished 26th after qualifying for the NCAA Tour-nament for the fi rst time since 2006, which was the highest fi nish for Alabama since achieving the same ranking in 2001. Th e team raced out to an 11-0 start, setting the school record for consecu-tive wins. For her stellar season, Mainz was named the 2009 Wilson/ITA South Region Coach of the Year.

Since taking over the program in 1998, Mainz has coached Alabama to the school’s fi rst, second and third SEC Western Division Championships, which the Tide captured in 2003, 2006 and most recently in 2011. In 2004, she led Alabama to its fourth-straight winning season – an accomplish-ment that had not been done at Alabama in 11 years – capturing six of that year’s nine matches decided by one point.

Mainz is actively involved in collegiate tennis on the national front serving on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Operating Committee. She also served as the chairperson for the ITA’s South Region for fi ve years and assumed the same role for the newly-formed Southern Region in 2010.

Mainz, once ranked in the top ten nationally in doubles, was a three-year team captain for the University of Houston Cougars and a two-time All-Southwest Conference selection, garnering numerous accolades for her dedication to the game of tennis on the court. Off the court, how-ever, is where she really shined, earning GTE Aca-demic All-American status and Dean’s List honors while a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. Mainz graduated with a degree in kinesiology from Houston in 1991.

Drake Bernstein, one of only 14 players in Georgia history to win over 100 matches in his career, enters his fi rst season as assistant coach of the University of Alabama women’s tennis team. Bernstein, a four-year letterwinner for the Bull-dogs, compiled a 112-44 record in singles and 84-56 mark in doubles throughout his tenure in Athens. In 2011, he was an All-SEC Second Team selection and was the recipient of Geor-gia’s Copas Leadership Award while serving as a team captain. As a junior, Bernstein led the team in match clinchers with six on the season, with his fi nal one coming in the second round of the NCAA Championships helping the Bulldogs advance with a 4-3 win over Florida State. He was also vital as a sophomore, clinch-ing four team wins with one coming against eighth-ranked Florida on an ace and another over No. 6 Tennessee to give Georgia the SEC Eastern Division title. Th at season, he was named to the ITA National Team Indoors All-Tournament Team helping the Bulldogs reach the fi nals. Bernstein, a native of Winder, Ga., enjoyed a stellar prep career as well, posting an 82-1 re-cord that included 79 straight victories. He was named the 2007 Athens Banner Herald Boys Tennis Player of the Year and was a three-time Athens Banner Herald All-Northeast Georgia selection. Bernstein led Winder-Barrow High School to its fi rst state tournament appearance in 2006 and followed that up with another trip in 2007. According to Tennisrecruiting.net., he was a four-star recruit, ranked 15th nation-ally, ninth in the Southeast and No. 2 in the state of Georgia.Bernstein graduated from the University of Georgia in May of 2011 with a degree in sports

Baili Camino posted one of the most impressive seasons in Crimson Tide history in 1997. The Ft. Meyers, Fla., native posted a 28-12 mark playing at No. 1 for the Crimson Tide. She became the first player in Tide history to earn bids to the main draw of all four collegiate grand slam events. At the National Claycourt Championships, the first leg of the collegiate grand slam, she made it to the semifinals before falling to even-tual champion Lauren Nikolaus of William and Mary.

After helping the Tide to make it to the NCAA Championships, Camino again made Alabama history by win-ning her way to the round of 16 in the NCAA Championships singles draw, thereby earning All-American hon-ors. She beat No. 7 Melissa Zimpfer of Wisconsin in the first round and UNLV’s No. 12 ranked Marianne Vallin, before being upset by Duke’s No. 50 ranked Wendy Fix.

Titia Wilmink came to Tuscaloosa from Pijnacker, The Netherlands. She arrived on the Alabama campus in the fall of 1990 and by her sophomore year she had become the first Crimson Tide women’s tennis player in a decade to make it to the NCAA Championships. In 1992, making it into the field from the second alternate slot, she made it into the NCAA field.

In the fall of 1991, Marouschka van Dijk, of Apeldoorn, Holland, joined Wilmink at the Capstone and the seed was planted for the most successful doubles tandem in Tide history.

In 1993, Wilmink, then a senior, and van Dijk, then a sophomore, swatted their way into Alabama women’s tennis legend, becoming the program’s first All-Americans.

Wilmink-van Dijk became one of the nation’s hottest pairings, making history at the Riviera All-American Championship by becoming the first duo to emerge from qualifying all the way to the championship final in that fall Grand Slam Event. They brought home Alabama’s first regional title, winning the 1993 South Region Doubles Championship in their own backyard of Tuscaloosa.

Positioned at the No. 1 doubles slot for Alabama, they were ranked as high as No. 7 nationally, a mark that pushed them into the NCAA Tournament as the seventh seeds - a coup that nets instant All-American status.

By year’s end the “Dutch Duo” collected a 28-7 overall record, winning 13 of their final 15 matches. They ended the year ranked No. 10 nationally and embedded themselves in Alabama women’s tennis lore as its first All-Americans.

Robin Stephenson became just the second Alabama singles player to earn All-American honors in the spring of 2005. Stephenson posted a 27-13 record, her third consecutive 20-win season, during her junior campaign and finished the season ranked ninth in the final ITA rankings. She also qualified for her second consecutive NCAA singles tournament en route to earning All-American distinction.

Throughout the course of the season she became the highest ranked singles player in the history of Alabama tennis when she reached No. 4 in the ITA rankings on Sept. 6, 2005. Sixteen of her 27 wins in 2005 came against ranked opponents. In October, Stephenson advanced to the semifinals of the ITA South Regional Championships and in November, she fought back after an opening round loss to win the consolation draw at the ITA National Indoor Championships.
