College means different things to different people.

Academic excellence, affordability, personal attention, opportunities for friendship and spiritual growth, a beautiful campus—these are just a few of the qualities students look for when choosing a college. What qualities are important to you?

Just as people are different, so are colleges; and Monmouth is no exception. We think it’s a college unlike any other. On the following pages you will see some of the many reasons people choose Monmouth—people who have already discovered what college was meant to be.

What college was meant to be.

Luther

College was meant to be excellent and affordable.

Our academic reputation continues to grow. After its founding in 1853, Monmouth quickly became one of the top private colleges in the Midwest. Monmouth is a founding member of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM), an exclusive group that includes some of the finest private institutions in the nation.

With an average class size of 18 students, you will be challenged to actively participate in classroom discussion.

Accredited by the American Chemical Society, Monmouth’s strong reputation in the sciences includes national prominence since the 1950s for the percentage of chemistry graduates who went on to receive a Ph.D.

Find value at Monmouth

Recognized as a nationally ranked liberal arts college, Monmouth is known for its progressive curriculum, designed with an appreciation for how people best learn—through interdisciplinary

courses, discussions with peers, and team-based, hands-on lab or computer simulations.

While some institutions tout distance learning and online courses as advantages, Monmouth believes that a strong residential campus experience is essential to equipping students for successful careers and personal lives.

At Monmouth, you will not be taught by graduate assistants. Monmouth faculty are personally committed to helping you achieve your full potential.

A common misconception is that a private liberal arts education is expensive. While tuition and fees continue to spiral at many of America’s best private colleges, Monmouth remains firm in its commitment to keeping costs affordable by offering the lowest tuition among ACM colleges.

In addition to the generous contributions of its alumni, Monmouth is able to offer substantial financial assistance to 99 percent of its students. Any way you do the math—Monmouth is a great value.

A strong sense of family pervades the Monmouth campus. That is especially true for English professor Mark Willhardt, who carries on the tradition of his father, a professor of English from 1967 to 2000.

“I visited public and private schools in three states, but Monmouth was where I felt most at home. My parents and I worried that with all the new buildings and great faculty it would be too expensive, but after talking to the financial aid office, we quickly found ourselves breathing easier. I learned I had earned a merit scholarship and qualified for a substantial amount of aid. That meant I was looking at a price that was very similar to what I might have paid at a state university. My parents are thrilled that I am able to attend the school I wanted.”

College was meant to be a place to learn by doing.

Each new activity will shape your college experience. At Monmouth, your most important learning may occur outside the classroom…in a lab, on a trip abroad, on the athletic field, or in a research presentation.

Whether conducting research on turtles at a nearby pond, running the light board for a Crimson Masque theatre production or anchoring a television newscast, your opportunities for outside-the-classroom learning experiences are limited only by your imagination.

“I came to Monmouth College with a dream of studying biochemistry in graduate school. I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to do summer research as an undergraduate along-side Professor Moore. She helped me land a summer internship through the University of Wisconsin, doing biofuel research at a Department of Energy lab. My hard work turned into a paid internship for the following summer. Monmouth has been the ideal place for developing my research abilities before graduate school; opportunities I could not have had at a larger school.”

Learn from experienced professionals. Since Monmouth students are encouraged to learn outside the classroom, it’s fitting that a number of Monmouth faculty have experience that extends far beyond the walls of academia.

Test your career interests through internships or your physical endurance as a member of the Fighting Scots champion track and field team.

From left, Joe Angotti, who teaches communi-cations and journalism, is a former senior vice president for NBC News; history professor Stacy Cordery is a New York Times bestselling author; and physics professor Chris Fasano is an active visiting researcher at Argonne National Laboratory.

Communication students gain practical experience in electronic media by writing, editing and producing a weekly campus cable news program.

College was meant to be a home away from home.

The quality of Monmouth’s rich residential life program is matched only by the comfort of its facilities. From spacious and modern residence halls to elegantly restored traditional buildings, Monmouth takes pride in its first-class campus, and you will, too!

Residents of the new Gracie Peterson Hall enjoy watching movies or their favorite television shows in its cozy “home theater.”

Each quad in Bowers Hall shares a common living room that’s perfect for an evening of hanging out with friends.

“It was comforting to know I was only two hours from home. By choosing Monmouth, I figured I could see my family and friends two or three times a month. I was surprised after pledging Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity that I rarely wanted to go home. Being active on campus has really made my Monmouth experience much more than I expected…and I have made lifelong friends with my brothers.”

First-time visitors to Monmouth College are struck by the beauty of the well-maintained buildings and landscaping. Attention to detail, in the renovation of historic facilities and in the construction of new ones, is immediately apparent. The administration follows a rigorous ongoing maintenance and improvement plan, so that the value of college property is never allowed to diminish. The ultimate beneficiaries of this strategy are MC students, who not only appreciate the comfort of living in attractive surroundings, but also enjoy the many advantages that first-class educational facilities provide.

“Besides the people, I was attracted to Monmouth by the beautiful buildings and residence halls. Some think of a college dorm as a lifeless cube of space, but that’s not the case here. For the most part, I use the library as my living room, the Stockdale Center as my kitchen, and the Mellinger Center as my 24-hour study hall. No matter how crazy my schedule gets, I can always find a comfortable place to get my work done or just unwind at all hours of the night.”

“I have my own ideas but I have learned to respect others’ ideas as well. Ethics is not just a class at Monmouth. You learn how to discuss difficult issues in a civil manner, although we come from many different backgrounds and experiences.”

Monmouth is the birthplace of two well-known national sororities—Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma—and maintains a total of seven Greek chapters for men and women. Approximately one in four MC students takes advantage of the leadership opportunities afforded by membership in a fraternity or sorority, including charitable projects, support groups, study resources, and scholarships.

The Monmouth curriculum places an emphasis on community service. Student organizations perform dozens of service projects each year. Fraternities and sororities are particularly active, raising more than $10,000 annually for philanthropic purposes.

From administrators to coaches, Monmouth’s staff shares a commitment to helping you develop your leadership potential.

Do you have a desire to be involved in a good cause? If so, you will find ample opportunities to stretch your muscles and intellect here. We train community leaders and encourage civic engagement and responsibility.

Through “Reflections,” one of four major components of Monmouth’s integrated curriculum, students are encouraged to examine their personal philosophical beliefs.

Numerous volunteer opportunities allow Monmouth students to participate in service learning, such as building a Habitat for Humanity house during spring break.

Through this experience, you will learn a lot about yourself, discover new passions, and put yourself on the road to a successful life and career.

Whether a task comes easily to you or whether you have to work extra hard, you will realize success at Monmouth by learning to take each obstacle in stride as you advance toward your ultimate goal.

Monmouth faculty will patiently guide and advise you as you chart your course to self-discovery.

“One good piece of advice from a senior friend dispelled the misconception that you don’t start your career search until your senior year. She said you should begin to network and meet people who will help you here at Monmouth and back home. The Wackerle Career Center provides us programs from the first year on. It is not just about finding a job. It is assistance in preparing a résumé for an internship interview, leadership development, graduate school preparation and other stuff, too. My investment in college matters, and it is not too early to think about my life after I graduate.” — KriSTen WySe ’11, History major

Some of the recent hardware brought home by the Fighting Scots includes the men’s 2009 Midwest Conference All-Sports trophy, and second- and third-place national trophies for men’s track and field.

We’re serious about athletics. The Fighting Scots have a long and storied tradition in Division III athletics, but a recent commitment to new and renovated facilities has had a profound impact on all 20 of Monmouth’s team sports. Monmouth’s men have won the Midwest Conference All-Sports title five times since 2005, and the women won their first in school history for the 2010-11 season.

Men’s track and field brought home second- and third-place team trophies, respectively, from the 2008 and 2007 national meets. Since 2005, six track athletes have won seven NCAA championships, and the football team has won four conference titles. Men’s track and field has swept the indoor and outdoor conference titles every year since 2001 and the women have swept the titles each year since 2005. The track program has produced at least one All-American every year since 1985.

Net sports have recently enjoyed a resurgence. Volleyball claimed its second conference crown with a league title in 2010. The men’s tennis team earned second place in the conference in three of the last four years and were ranked 21st in the Central Region by the ITA, marking the first time the Scots have been ranked in the history of the program. The team has also crowned three singles champions in the last two years.

The Scots have also had success in the winter season. The 2011-12 women’s basketball team made history by earning its first ever NCAA Tournament berth. In the pool, Monmouth’s women swimmers enjoyed their highest conference finish in the history of program and they continue to build.
