2012 Season PreviewThe 2012 Troy women’s soccer team will look to improve upon a nine-win campaign from a season ago that saw the Trojans advance to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

The Trojans return four of their top five scorers from a season ago, including sophomore Chelsey Williams. Williams led the team with 19 points on nine goals in her freshman campaign, including two game-win-ners. Nikki Stamaris returns for her senior year after finishing last season with two goals and three assists. Maddie Tieken will be called upon as a forward in 2012, after finishing last year with three goals and two assists.

The Trojan midfield will be held down by a strong group, including returners Samantha Morgan and Alissa Jones. Jones notched seven goals and two assists for 16 points a season ago. Juniors Cecilia Thorngren and Kailani Decock will look to continue their development in the midfield.

The Troy defense is led by a strong pair of upper classmen in Erin Cersley and Paige McMillan. Both started all 21 games for a Trojans defense that held opponents to just 1.50 goals per game last season. Joining them will be fellow returners Karina Moore and Georgia Wallis, who both saw action a season ago.

The Trojans will be looking to fill the void left by four-year starter Ashley Banham in net. Juniors Madison Winter and Caitlin Buono, as well as freshman Katie Comeno-Lewis, will all by vying for playing time.

CHRIS BENTLEYHead Coach • Fifth Season

Wisconsin-Oshkosh (2004)Record at TROY (Four Seasons): 37-38-6 (.494)Overall Record (Four Seasons): 37-38-6 (.494)

Chris Bentley is set to enter his fifth season as head coach of the Troy University Women’s Soccer team. Prior to Bentley’s appointment as head coach, the soccer program had an overall record of 50-141-7 in 11 seasons, having qualified for the post-season just once and earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award 2 times.

The team has achieved unprecedented success on and off the field over the past four seasons, posting the best four-year winning span in program history, shattering virtually every program record, and earning multiple team and individual accolades.

Bentley started his Troy tenure as assistant coach for one season in 2007. As the assistant, he helped the women to impressive improvements, achieving the third highest win total in program history, moving them up 37 spots in the NCAA Division I RPI rankings from 2006 to 2007. Off the field, the women earned their second consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Award and nine student-athletes were honored by the Sun Belt Conference for their

academic achievement. Four students were named to the Commissioner’s List and five to the Academic Honor Roll.

“This administration made an impression on me the day I set foot on campus for the assistant job,” Bentley said. “The fact that they have not changed and the university has continued to move forward in their goals with facility improvements and overall support for all programs is a testament to how truly spectacular Troy is now and where it is going in the future.”

Prior to his arrival at Troy University, Bentley spent the 2005 and 2006 seasons as the associate head soccer coach for the men and women at Delta State University (NCAA Division II) in Cleveland, Miss.

At DSU, Bentley helped lead the men and women to dramatic improvements. The 2006 season saw records broken in almost every category on both sides. The

program placed four players on All-Gulf South Conference teams, which were firsts in program history. Both teams set records for wins in a season, conference wins in a season, goals scored in a season, goals scored in a game, and shutouts recorded, just to name a few. For their efforts, the women’s side was named fifth in the NCAA Division II Top 20 Most Improved teams. The program also saw tremendous success in the classroom in 2005 and 2006, placing 29 players on the GSC honor roll, two players on the GSC All-Academic Team and one on the NSCAA Scholar All-America Team.

Aside from his coaching duties at DSU, Bentley served as a staff coach for the Chicago Fire Juniors of Mississippi coaching players around the Delta. He was also on staff with the Mississippi Olympic Development Program where he had the honor of coaching state, regional and national pool players.

Before his arrival at DSU, Bentley served as the assistant men’s coach for the 2004 season at Ripon College (NCAA Division III) in Ripon, Wis.

While in Wisconsin, Bentley helped foster three all-conference players, one conference player of the year, one all-region player, and five academic all-conference players.

He also coached boy’s and girl’s high school soccer for the Oshkosh Area School District and coached club soccer for the Menasha Area Soccer Club and Oshkosh United Soccer Club. Additionally, he was the Coaching Director/Educator for the Menasha Area Soccer Club’s recreational programs.

A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Bentley earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and his Master’s Degree from Delta State University. In addition, Bentley has earned the USSF “A” License, NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma, and NSCAA National Youth Diploma. He is currently a staff coach for the State (AL), Region III, and Super Y National Olympic Development Program’s. He also serves as a coaching educator for the State of Alabama teaching the USSF E & D Licenses.

CLAIRE SCANLANAssistant Coach

Fifth SeasonMercyhurst (1996)

Assistant soccer coach Claire Scan-lan enters her fifth season with Troy having previously served as a graduate assistant for the Trojan soccer program from 1999-2001

while earning her Master’s Degree in Education.

Scanlan brings a wealth of experience to Troy as she has been a player and coach with Ireland’s national team and is currently a member of the Irish National team’s coaching staff. Scanlan has also served as the head coach of Ireland’s Under 23 National Team and was an assistant coach for Ireland’s Under 17 Women’s World Cup National Team. In addition to her international experience, Scanlan’s previous coaching role was as the head coach of the Female Football Academy at Filton College, part of Bristol’s Academy of Sport in England.

Under Scanlan’s leadership, Filton College won back to back National Championships in 2007 and 2008, along with two Na-tional Cup Championships. Scanlan’s success with Filton Col-lege helped guide it to being named as the “Female Football Academy of the Year” in 2007 by the English FA.

While at Filton, Scanlan also served as the assistant coach with the England College’s National Team and helped it to achieve success in its inaugural year. She also acted as the Assistant Di-rector of the Girls Center of Excellence where she was the head coach of the under 16 Center of Excellence team.

In addition, Scanlan was a player and assistant coach with Bris-tol Academy’s Women’s senior team in the English Women’s Pre-mier league and helped guide them to a top four finish in the league and three FA Cup semifinals in four years.

Coach Scanlan has had a distinguished coaching career to date but it is her playing career that was the catalyst to her develop-ment as a coach. Having spent over 15 years as a player on the Irish Women’s National Team, Scanlan has competed in Europe-an and World Cup qualifiers and was named the Irish National Team Player of the Year in 1999 and a nominee for that same award in 2003.

Having played at Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business, Scanlan was a member of the highly successful Mercyhurst College women’s soccer program from 1992-1996.

While at Mercyhurst, Scanlan was a two-time All-American in 1994 and 1995 and was named the Division II Player of the Year and Conference Player of the Year.

Scanlan’s first stop as a player following her stellar collegiate ca-reer came in 1997 in the Japanese “L” League with Oki FC Winds. She also won a National Championship playing with Springfield Sirens in the W-League and continued that success with the

Memphis Mercury where she captained the highly regarded W-league team.

Scanlan’s career continued in Europe where she played with Leeds United in the English Women’s Premier League before she made the move to Bristol Academy to pursue her coaching career in one of the most competitive women’s leagues in the world.

A USSF ‘A’ and UEFA ‘B’ licensed coach, Scanlan continues to be involved as an assistant coach with the Irish Women’s National team and is a state staff coach for the Alabama Olympic Devel-opment Program as well as a Region Staff coach for the Region III Olympic Development Program.

Individual Season Records

JILL PINDERMidfield • Sophomore

Pensacola, Fla. • Louisiana Tech

2008

In her first season with the Trojans, Jill Pinder scored a program-record 14 goals, on her way to 29 points, also a program record. Pinder became the first player in Troy history to be named to the Soccer-buzz.com Elite Feat Team of the Week on September 16, as well as the first Trojan to earn Sun Belt Player of the Week, do-ing so in the same week. Pinder recorded three consecutive hat-tricks against Nicholls State, Jackson-ville State and Alabama State, all Trojan wins. Her three goals against Jackson-ville State brought the Trojans back from a two-goal defecit to earn their first ever win against the Gamecocks. The Trojans set multiple team records during the 2008 season. Their unbeaten streak of seven games still stands as the longest in program history, while the teams’ five hat tricks is also still a team record.
