2 STRATFORD SENIOR SERVICES FEBRUARY 2012

C.A.R.E.S. Corner……………………………………………….…….Andrea Carroll

February is considered the month of love, flowers, hearts and candy. But, it’s also during the winter when days are shorter, colder and darker. Take extra care of yourself during this time of the year. It’s O.K. to have some sweets, but good nutritious foods are the best way to ward off colds and viruses. It may be too cold for a walk outside, but indoor exercising with light weights, a video program or just walking around a small indoor mall like the one at Hawley Lane can keep your heart pumping. Before you know it Spring will be here!

Commission on Aging meets the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. in the Library Room, upper level. Meetings are open to the public. If you have issues or questions related to senior town services, please feel free to come to one of the meetings. The next meeting will be held on February 14.

AARP meeting will be held February 15 at 1:00 pm at the Baldwin Coffee Shop.We are pleased to announce our speaker is Dr. Francis Scifo of St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Department of Cardiology. Here is an article about decluttering. This information is importantbecause it helps you feel better and save money at the same time!

The basics of everyday decluttering by Colleen Madsen on January 5, 2012.

Keep it simple ~ Everyday decluttering is about decluttering slowly and deliberately one item at a time. Pledge to remove, on average, at least one item a day ~ Simply walk into a room spy something that you not longer need, use or care about and remove it to your departure point. The departure point ~ Designate an out of the way area to place your decluttered items until you are ready to take the next step.Start with the easy stuff ~ A surefire way to deter yourself and give up early in this mission is the make it too hard on yourself to begin with. So start by getting rid of the stuff that you care the least about and is easy to part with. Don’t reclutter while you declutterLearning to let go is one thing learning not to acquire potential clutter is another.

Be mindful about your decision making ~ Don’t declutter items just for the sake of getting rid of things. Give each item careful consideration. You don’t want to find you are replacing items a month or two down the track because you got over zealous. Similarly don’t keep items for the wrong reason’s either. Be responsible about disposal ~Please dispose of your decluttereditems responsibly. Sell, donate or give away everything that is still usable, recycle the things you can and only put in the trash items that are no good for anything. As little as one item a day will make a huge difference.

STRATFORD SENIOR MEN’S CLUB– FEBRUARY 2012GRAB YOUR COAT AND GET YOUR HAT, leave your worry on the door step. Just direct your feet to our room and take a seat. The Stratford Senior Men’s Club is a welcoming group who enjoys each other’s company and has fun playing cards, bocce, bowling and golf. We have informative speakers each meeting and schedule social events and trips. We are delighted to accept new members. Just show up at any of the meetings listed below and see for yourself if this is a fit for you. THE LINEUP – Meetings are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3rd and February 17th.Harry Tashjian, our Michael Jordan of the Men’s Club, nailing one slam dunk presenter after another, has placed in the lineup the following speakers: for February 3rd will be Joseph Pelland on Prison Ministry; the speaker for the 17th will be John Calcaperra, manager of the Stratford 99 Restaurant. All gentlemen over 55 are most welcome and encouraged to attend and learn about the group. IT’S NOT THE PALE MOON that excites me, that thrills and delights me, oh no, it’s bowling two hundred and two! This past month the excited high scorer was Vinny Costa. Our talented Bowling Commissioner, Bill Hickey, reports that for the first half of the season the team in first place was team four: Peter Jastermsky, Lou DeGirolamo, Al Papp and Emil Usinger. In second place was team two: Joe Saladino, Chuck Wagner, Bill Hickey and Bill Powell. In third place was team one: Harry Tashjian, Walt Dunbar and Steve Stavecky NOT PLAYING WITH A FULL DECK – We don’t mean the players. They are as sharp as an auditor’s pencil. We mean the deck of cards in pinochle which has no 2’s through 8’s. The team that is most successful, not playing with a full deck, as of this writing is team 9; Howard Baker and Bob Mastroni. In second place is team 3; Ray Maynard and Dom Piccino. In third place is team 8; Walt Broadhurst and George Hangos. WE COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT and still have begged for more. Our Christmas Dinner Dance was a spectacular success. Our congratulations to Don Coulson for his magnificent job in planning and carrying out this major event for the SSMC. At the event our Vice-President, Mal Starratt, honored those members who have passed away recently. They are Donald Elliot, Gordon Griswold, Stan Meyers, Paul Seaman, Lou Simon, Larry Steele, George Swanson and Gene Wall. YOU’RE STILL GLOWIN’, you’re still growin’, you’re still goin’ strong. Happy Birthday to our February birthday boys who are still going strong: William Vars and William Zusein. BUTTON UP YOUR OVERCOAT when the wind blows free. Take good care of yourself we are there for thee. Our captivating President, Peter Jastermsky, reminds all members that there is a great need among the homeless in the area during this cold weather season. Please donate new and/or gently used jackets, sweaters, pants, gloves, underwear, socks and shoes for the Club’s Clothing Drive. Kindly bring them to the meetings in February. Thanks. SENIOR SMILES – 1. Hospitality is making your guest feel at home, even if you wish they were. 2. When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the fire department usually uses water. 3. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
