W elcome to the 2012 ISA Texas Tree Conference! This year we will continue to grow our knowledge, our outreach and our partnerships, and will also continue our history of providing outstanding education programs featuring nationally
and internationally known speakers, the latest in tree research and arboriculture, an awards luncheon, a reception with exhibitors and numerous networking opportunities.
Keynote Speakers
Dr. Ed Gilman, Professor, Environmental Horticulture Department, University of Florida
Dr. Gilman received his PhD from Rutgers and has been on the faculty since 1984 as professor in the Environmental Horticulture Department at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Ed wrote Illustrated Guide to Pruning which is now in its third edition. He received the Authors Citation Award in 1999, the Educators Award in 2003, and the research award in 2007 from the ISA for sustained excellence in research, publishing and teaching timely information on tree care. He has published more than 95 scientific peer reviewed journal articles on roots and pruning trees in his 30 years in academia and industry .
Dr. Bryant Scharenbroch , Soil Scientist, The Morton Arboretum
Bryant Scharenbroch is a Soil Scientist at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL, where he is the primary investigator of the Morton Arboretum Soil Science laboratory. Bryant received a Ph.D. in Soil Science from University of Wisconsin, Madison, a M.S. in Plant Science from University of Idaho, and B.S. degrees from University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point in Urban Forestry and Forest Management. Bryant is an Associate Editor for Arboriculture and Urban Forestry and an ISA Certified Arborist.
Anne Beard, Manager, System Forester, PNM/TNMP Anne Beard leads the Vegetation Management Department at Public Service Company of New Mexico and Texas New Mexico Power. Anne has a BS in Forest Administration from University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, and earned an MBA from Oklahoma City University. She has over 24 years experience in the industry and previously worked for Florida Power & Light Co. and AEP Texas. Anne is an ISA Certified Arborist and Utility Specialist, is the current UAA President, and has served on the ISA Certification Test Committee and as the Rocky Mountain Chapter Representative for UAA. She is the recipient of UAA President’s Award. Anne has spoken at numerous conferences and has had several articles published in various publications including Transmission & Distribution World and UAA Quarterly. She also serves on the Board of Think Trees New Mexico and was President of the Texas Vegetation Management Association.

Classroom Session I - 10:00 am - 11:00 am - Managing Urban Soils Bryant Scharenbroch, Soil Scientist, The Morton Arboretum
Managers of urban trees are charged with the difficult task of improving or preserving urban soil quality. Best Management Practices (BMP) are steps and actions for managing urban soils for tress. This presentation will cover these BMPs. Topic areas include: soil preservation, specification, assessment, and management actions.
Classroom Session II - 11:00 am - 12:00 pm - How to Talk Trees Paul Ries, Instructor and Extension Specialist - Urban Forestry, Oregon State University
How you say what you have to say about trees, urban forestry, or arboricultural topics is critical to the success of your communications efforts. In this session, Paul will present several tips, tools, and techniques that will help you effectively communicate tree related subjects in person, in writing, and in presentations.

Track 1 - An Introduction to Arboriculture
A great review or introduction to basic tree care for tree workers. A stand-alone one day workshop that will be a combination of classroom and hands-on learning. Topics covered will include basic tree biology, tree pruning, and chain saw operation and safety. Instructors are Guy LeBlanc and Oscar Mestas.
Pista 2 - Jornadas para Trabjadores de Arboles
A Spanish language workshop covering tree biology, soil science, tree selection, installation & establishment, pruning, and diagnosis & plant disorders. Expert speakers include Salvador Alemany, Mark Duff, and Micah Pace.
These workshops are not part of the main conference and require separate registration
