SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE®Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the world’s largest advocate for breast health and has invested more than $1.9 billion in finding the cures since its beginning in 1982. Every major advancement in breast cancer research has been funded in part by Komen dollars, including the understanding that there is more than one type of breast cancer. Several research grants are currently being conducted here in Indiana at Indiana University and Purdue University. One groundbreaking study at IU Simon Cancer Center has implications for treatment of other types of cancer.
CENTRAL INDIANA AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE®Komen Central Indiana is one of 124 affiliates and contributes 25% of its revenue to fund breast cancer research on the causes, improved treatments and cures for breast cancer. The remaining 75% stays local in our 21-county service area to provide grants for breast health programs. These programs help ensure that women in Central Indiana are getting the screenings, treatment assistance and survivor support they need.
OUR MISSION The mission of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
OUR VISION A world without breast cancer.
BREAST CANCER FACTS• Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women in the U.S.
(lung cancer is first).• 1 in 8 women (12.5%) will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.• The five-year survival rate is now 98%.• 90-95% of all diagnosed breast cancer is diagnosed in individuals with no family history.• While rare, men can be diagnosed with breast cancer since they, too,
have breast tissue (roughly 2,000 in the U.S. each year).• African American women have less chance of developing breast cancer than
Caucasian women but are more likely to die from it.• Not all breast cancers have tumors.• For the types of breast cancers that have a mass, it can take up to 10 years for it grow
large enough to feel on your own.
