PlayitsafeDo your homework before sending the kids to summer camp

L a u r a r i c h a r d s o n , s a f e K i d s L a r i m e r c o u n t y

Summer means fun in the sun, wa-ter recreation and for many, sum-mer camp! “The warmer months

of May through September are when most accidental injuries happen whether playing at home, riding in a vehicle or enjoying summer camp. Parents should be well informed about how the camp they choose makes for a safe, healthy environment for kids,” says Dr. Peyton Taliaferro, Safe Kids member and Loveland-based family physician.

Safe Kids offers the following tips to help parents make the best, safest choice for their child when it comes to summertime activities at camp.

First, decide what kind of camp your child would enjoy including day camps, specialty camps, and sleepover camps. Next, contact the camps of your choice and ask some key questions:

What does a typical day look like? What kind of foods (meals and

snacks) do they provide? Alert the camp director of any

special-needs your child has and ask how they may accommodate your camper.

What is the camp counselor-to-child ratio? This is especially important for any swimming or water-based activities.

What type of training or certifica-tion requirements does the camp have for its staff (including CPR/First aid training)?

Does the camp require a thorough criminal/background check for all staff?

What kind of safety gear is pro-vided? (i.e. horseback riding = helmet; swimming/canoeing/boating = life jack-et; bike/scooter/skating = helmet; etc.)

Will children be transported at any time during camp (i.e. field trips) and if so, how?

What is the nearest emergency room/trauma center?

Ask for a copy of a written safety or emergency plan.

How is medication administered? Do they have a camp nurse on site?

What is the camp’s discipline policy?

Is the summer camp ACA (American Camp Association) accredited?

ACA Accreditation ensures that the camp has had a regular, independent safety audit that goes be-yond regulations in most states. ACA accredita-tion is the best evidence parents have of a camp’s commitment to a safe environment for their children.

Parents may want to visit the camp before sending their child and may ask for a list of references.

As parents make safety a pri-ority when considering a camp, here are additional tips for parents so that safety stays top of mind:

If your child will be biking at camp, make sure her bike is in good working order with reflectors on the front, back and sides. Children should wear close-toed shoes and a helmet, every time.

Ensure your child wears a life vest when out on boats/canoes, near open bodies of water or when participating in water sports.

Remind children to wear their seatbelt when traveling in any camp car or van; be sure to bring a car seat or booster seat and require that your child be properly restrained when in a vehicle. (School buses are exempt from child restraint devices and use a different type of crash injury prevention called compartmentalization).

Send children with proper foot-wear (water shoes, closed-toed shoes, hiking boots) for the various activities they will be doing.

If children will be playing on a playground, remove hood and neck drawstrings from their clothing.

Apply sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher to your child’s exposed skin 15 to 30 minutes before going out, and send a bottle of sunscreen with your child so that he can reapply frequently.

Make sure your child drinks plenty of water. A child who seems tired or achy should rest in the shade or go in-side for a while. Send a refillable water bottle with your child and encourage her to fill it several times a day in order to stay hydrated.

Teach your child to know what is safe and what is unsafe. As a parent, you cannot always be around to protect them – equipping them with safe teach-ings and the confidence to know when something isn’t safe is the best practice!

Active supervision by counselors, using proper protective gear every time and other simple prevention steps will help children avoid danger this summer while attending camp. For more infor-mation about summer safety, call the Safe Kids Larimer County office at 970-495-7504 or visit www.safekids.org.

Jump-N-Art is a one-of-a-kind art camp, offered exclusively at Pump It Up. Kids spend part of their time exploring their inner artist and the rest of their time laughing, enjoying snacks, playing games and, of course, bouncing.

The Jump-N-Art program was developed by a fine-arts education center and emphasizes the joy of self-expression through art. Studies have shown that when physical activity is blended with artistic activities, creative capabilities are greatly enhanced. We see it all the time at Jump-N-Art, watching young artists develop through a unique combination of art instruction and exercise.

Weekly Camp SessionsPump It Up Jump-N-Art Summer Camp is ideal for 4-10 year olds with lots of energy and imagination. Registration includes water bottle, art supplies, morning snack and lunch.

“I am more organized!” “My grades are better.”“I didn’t know that learning could

be so much fun.”“Math is easier. I want to do it

because now I can!”These are some of the comments

from students at Access for Knowledge Fort Collins Learning Center, where the focus is creating different possibilities for students of all ages who struggle with learning. Not all kids learn easily, and when studies become a struggle the joy of learning is replaced with disinterest and even behavior issues. We have the tools and techniques that unlock the patterns, behaviors, judgments and limitations that often make the learning process difficult. In this process we create a different environment in which students learn the tools that create more success and confidence not only in school but as they move through life.

Director and teacher, Mary Dravis-Parrish brings 23 years of experience teaching and working with kids to develop skills that promote academic achievement and personal growth. “What a joy it is to see kids at any stage of the educational process begin to experience joy in learning! I love sharing with kids the tools that lead them to a place where they are in control of experiencing for themselves just how easy and fun learning can be. I celebrate the differences that

each child brings to this world and acknowledge the amazing talents and abilities that lie within. In my classroom there are no “disabilities”, only super-kids with super- talents.”

If you are looking for a different possibility for your student’s academic success, then give us a call and come in for a tour of our center. We offer free diagnostic testing. Students are tutored in small groups in math, reading, study skills, homework help and ACT/SAT test preparation.
