Mike Smallmen’s Golf Coach

the Illinois men’s golf team continued its winning tradition during the 2011-12 season, adding another nCaa and Big ten individual champion to the record books along with a fourth-consecutive Big ten team title and fifth-straight trip to the nCaa Championships. Head coach mike Small guided a youthful squad, featuring two freshmen and a sophomore, to a successful postseason run in his 12th year at the helm. Small coached sophomore nCaa champion thomas Pieters and senior Big ten champion Luke Guthrie to the top of the leaderboard on both the national and conference stage.

Pieters won the nCaa title by three strokes at the Riviera Country Club, giving Illinois its second national champion in the last three years. the nijlen, Belgium, native fired a 5-under par 208 to earn the arnold Palmer award as the individual medalist and join Scott Langley (2010) as the only other national champion in program history. Pieters also was named a PInG first-team all-american, becoming the fifth first-team selection at Illinois and third Illini honoree in the last three years. as a team, Illinois finished 21st overall at the nCaa Championships and was one of just six schools to compete at nationals for the fifth year in a row, joining Florida, UCLa, USC, texas and texas a&m in the elite group. the Illini were in contention for the eight-team match play final with 18 holes remaining but dropped back during the final round in Pacific Palisades, Calif. the Orange and Blue earned their fifth-straight trip to nationals after tying for third at the nCaa norman Regional. the Illini, who were seeded seventh entering the regional, played well above their seed and finished behind only eventual national team champion texas and regional champion Washington at the Jimmie austin OU Golf Club. Individually, sophomore thomas Pieters (2nd), senior Luke Guthrie (t-7th) and freshman Brian Campbell (t-10th) finished in the top 10. the start of postseason play saw Illinois capture its school-record fourth consecutive and 11th overall Big ten title, as it completed the fourth four-peat in Big ten history with a thrilling finish over Indiana at the Pete Dye Course in French Lick, Ind. Guthrie carded a 5-under 211 and won Big ten medalist honors for the second year in a row, making him the third repeat conference champion in school history and first at Illinois since Steve Stricker (1988-89). Following the conference competition, Guthrie was picked as the Big ten Player of the year, while Small garnered Coach of the year honors for the fourth year in row and fifth time in his career. Guthrie and Pieters, who finished fifth overall, were both selected to the all-Championship team and tabbed as first-team all-Big ten selections. Redshirt junior mason Jacobs was recognized by the conference for the first time in his career with a second-team selection. Illinois’ other team title came during the fall season when they repeated as champions at the D.a. Weibring Invitational. Guthrie earned his first medalist honors of the year at the event in normal, Ill., and added another first-place finish at the Boilermaker Invitational, the Illini’s final regular season event. the Quincy, Ill., native wrapped up his career with seven total tournament titles and set new program reecords for season (71.19) and career (72.08) stroke averages.

Head Coach mike Small has brought national recognition to the Illinois golf program in his decade plus as head coach. Small has guided the Illini to four straight Big ten Championships and has coached two of the last three nCaa individual champions in Scott Langley (2010) and thomas Pieters (2012). He also coached the 2012 Big ten Player of the year Luke Guthrie, who repeated as the individual Big ten champion and broke the program’s career strokeaverage record to complete an illustrious career. In 2012, Small saw his club advance to the nCaa Championship for the fifth-consecutive season, making Illinois one of only six schools to compete at nationals each of the last five years. a year earlier in 2011, the Illini completed their best nCaa finish since 1941, reaching the nCaa match play quarterfinals and tying for fifth overall. Small has been named Big ten Coach of the year a conference-record five times in his career after taking home the top honor for the fourth year in a row in 2012. He also has been named midwest Regional Coach of the year four times in his career. Under his direction, Illinois athletes have won 10 all-america honors and 23 all-Big ten accolades. the 2009 Illini squad set a school record for the most team tournament titles in a season—winning seven, including the prestigious Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. Over the past four seasons, Illinois players have set records for the best 18-hole (273), 36-hole (555) and 54-hole team score (831) and top individual 18-hole (63 by Chris DeForest), 36-hole (131 by Scott Langley) and 54-hole (201 by Scott Langley) individual scoring totals. two of his first-team all-americans, Guthrie and Langley, are currently 1-2 in career stroke average in Illinois history after edging out Illini great Steve Stricker. as a former full-time professional, he can share with aspiring tour players what it takes to play at the next level. as someone who still competes and succeeds at a handful of tour events each year, he has had a chance to rub elbows with the likes of tiger Woods and Phil mickelson. When mike Small returned to Champaign, Ill., in June of 2000 to take over as head coach, it came following a decade of playing professionally, including five years spent on the PGa tour and what is now the nationwide tour. Small continues to compete on a limited basis in PGa tour events. although not playing full-time, he does so with some impressive results. When he competes, he shows off his Illinois colors and attracts many proud alumni in the gallery. Small’s success has meant great publicity for Illinois golf. the summer of 2007 saw arguably the biggest of those successes when he won the low club professional at the 2007 PGa Championship and shared the award stand with its champion tiger Woods on national television. Four years later, he again earned low club professional honors at the 2011 PGa Championship, where he has honored alongside PGa champion Keegan Bradley on CBS. the summer of 2010 saw Small win the PGa Professional national Championship for the third time in his career, qualifying for his ninth major championship, including his sixth PGa. He made the cut in the 2005 and 2007 PGa and missed the cut by a stroke in 2006. While a member of the Orange and Blue, Small lettered at Illinois from 1985- 88, earning all-Big ten and all-Region honors and helping lead Illinois as a senior to the 1988 Big ten Championship.

Has been ranked in the top five in the world during each of the past four seasons from 2009-12. Stricker has nine career top-10 finishes in major events, highlighted by a runner-up performance at the 1998 PGa Championship and a tie for sixth at the 2009 masters. Stricker qualified for all four majors in 2010, making the cut in all four, and placed in the top 20 at all four majors in 2011. Open (64)and finished eighth in the event. Stricker was a three-time all-american at Illinois, winning three Big ten Championship individual titles. the two-time Big ten Player of the year in 1988 and 1989, Stricker won the Les Bolstad award in 1988 for having the lowest stroke average in the conference.
