Bronze Star Award Given to Aurora Man

Young Man Performed Heroic Service in Korea with Infantry Division..

The award of the Bronze Star Medal with the let-ter “V” device for heroic achievement to Cpl. Gerald Wade Van Winkle, Aurora.

Corporal Van Winkle received the award for the outstanding service against the enemy near Yonghwadong, Korea, while serving with Company G, 27th Infantry Regiment, a part of the 25th Infantry Division.

Van Winkle distinguished himself when the platoon encountered heavy resistance from a well-entrenched enemy emplace-ment.

Despite intense small arms and auto-matic weapons concentrations Van Winkle and his assistance crawled forward with their recoilless rifle to attack the enemy strongpoint.

When his assistant was wound-ed Van Winkle pressed on alone until he reached an exposed van-tage point from which he could direct effective fire.

Although his first round fell short, thus disclosing his position to the enemy, he calmly reloaded his weapon and completely de-stroyed the emplacement with a

direct hit.“Corporal Van Winkle’s valorous action,”

the citation read, “reflects great credit on himself, his unit and the United States Armed Forces.”

West Harrison family servescountry; lives, learns, prospers

BY JOE AWADHyrrison Press editor

Attention! With Memorial Day fast approaching, it is appropriate

to think about our fallen heroes and soldiers who fought on the front lines, but our country is protected by a vast mili-tary support system. Look no farther than West Harrison for a family devoted to the task.

Alvin and Jane Powell, Pinhook Road, and two children are red, white and blue through and through.

He is a retired Air Force senior master sergeant (SMSgt.). She is a retired staff sergeant (SSgt.)

He made a living and served his country 25 years, from August 1977 through February 2002, by planning and or-ganizing visits for dignitaries.

She guarded the gate, ran radar on base, investigated traf-fic accidents, and later supervised a shift as a flight chief in the Air Force - seven years on the job from March 1980 through March 1987.

He grew up in Michigan. A Kocker, she was raised in Harrison and attended St. John Catholic school and Harri-son High School. They met in Berlin, where they had their first child.

“Even in high school, I had the desire to join the mili-tary, and leave the area. I had a sense of adventure, and girls didn’t do that much around here. I wanted to go out and see the world,” said Jane, now a part-time teller at Miami Sav-ings Bank, State Street, Harrison, and a part-time employee at Gardens Alive, Greendale.

Alvin’s career took him to the Netherlands, Germany, Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Dessert Shield, then back to Germany for Operation Shining Hope, humanitar-ian relief for Kosovo refugees in Albania and the Republic of Macedonia. Jane saw duty in Germany and South Korea.

Back to her rootsEventually, they were transferred to Wright Patterson

Air Force Base, Dayton, which gave Jane the opportunity to visit her mother in Harrison. After retirement and with the world in her pocket, Jane returned to her Harrison roots with the family in tow.

“We relate so much to the Harrison area. That’s were we go to church. That’s were we do our shopping. We know a lot families here through St. John school,” said Jane.

Taking full command of the interview, Jane worked off index cards, pointing out the highlights of their careers and accomplishments of their military children.

One card points out the couple was stationed in Berlin when the LaBella disco was blown up in April 1986, killing two U.S. servicemen. The blast injured 230 people includ-ing 79 American servicemen. A Turkish woman also was killed.

History shows the bombing resulted in President Ronald Reagan ordering air strikes against Libya and killer Muam-

mar Gaddafi. As a shift commander at Tempelhof Central Airport,

historic site of the Berlin Airlift, Jane tightened the secu-rity reins, and instructed her team to be keenly aware of their surroundings. The terrorist attack opened her eyes to the danger and vulnerability of U.S. service personnel overseas.

Shaking hands with history

Alvin was an administrative specialist, who made ar-rangements and set up itineraries for distinguished guests. He arranged activities, planned meals, selected restaurants, and even drove the bus when duty called.

Over his career, Alvin met President George W.H. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, U.S. Ambassador Richard Burt, German President Richard Karl Freiheer von Weizsacker, political prisoner Anatoly Sharansky, CIA Director William Casey, Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger, Gen. Colin Powell, and President Ronald Reagan.

Staff Sgt. Brian Powell, 25, an East Central High School graduate, is an AF contracting officer. He joined up in 2006, and is Stationed at Buckley AFB in Colorado.

Brian was deployed in 2010 to Kandahar AFB in Af-ghanistan, where he spent six months. He currently is serv-ing his second deployment, this time at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan.

Brian’s job involves formalizing AF contracts for all variety of things from services to construction, said Jane, who said her son made an excellent choice.

“Contracting is a great field. There are a lot of jobs out there that are so closely related to civilian jobs,” she said.

Breaking traditionSecond Lt. Karyn Powell broke tradition when “she went

Army.” Recruited by West Point on a volleyball scholar-ship, the E.C. grad joined the Army because that’s what the military expects after assuming the traditions of the Black Knights.

Karyn is stationed at Fort Ruckers, Ala., where she is enrolled in helicopter aviator training.

“Finally, we have a flyer and she’s in the Army. Go fig-ure,” said Jane, adding that Karyn hopes to pilot the famed Apache combat helicopter.

Karyn is engaged to 2Lt. Hugh Clark, a mechanical en-gineer at Fort Stewart, Ga. The couple met at West Point.

“Obviously, you’re proud of them. It’s a good choice for them,” said Jane.

“We instilled it in them because we served. We never told them to join because they had to, or because it was the patriotic thing to do. It’s great training. You grow, and learn discipline. Some people just don’t have a clue because they never served. It’s all about camaraderie and teamwork.”

The bonding lasts a lifetime, said Jane, who started a Facebook page to keep contact with her military friends, especially those she and Alvin met in Germany. The page has about 100 friends.

Jane and Alvin have had their military adventures, but they remain red, white and blue as members of the Har-rison Yeager-Benson American Legion Post 199; Veterans of Foreign Wars Duwel Post 7570, and Amvets Post 13 in West Harrison. They also are members of the American Legion Honor Guard and Funeral Detail.

“Jim Dole recruited us. He’s been after me a couple of years now. He said once you do it a couple of times you’re going to love it, you are going to feel so good, and you do. I feel like it’s good use of our time. Last week, we had a de-tail for Lawrence Mortashed. He was part of the Normandy Invasion. It was really something. It just really makes you feel good.”

At ease.
