  • tUrnInG CarBon Into GoldWhat is FACT? Otherwise known as Functional Advanced Composite Technology, FACT represents our holistic approach to working with composites. Like any project at Specialized, FACT bikes and equipment are based on the needs of the rider; then we apply critical disciplines to achieve the design targets that will best serve those rider needs: Design & Engineering, Material Selection, Fabrica-tion Process, and Testing. Whats the result of the FACT process? Superior carbon bikes and equipment that deliver real-world performance benefits for the rider.

    1. rIder needsGuided by the needs of the rider experience, we determine the best combination of propertiesincluding stiffness, compliance, strength, and weightfor each product.

    An innovation like the one-piece BB/chainstay design resists deflection under pedal loads for improved power transfer.

    2. desIGn & enGIneerInGInnovation and optimization. This is where we dream up new technologies to make each bike the best of its breed.

    The down tube, bottom bracket, and top tube of the Roubaix utilize a higher mixture of E390 high modulus carbon fiber, which is stiffer to prevent torsional flex for better power transfer. This area uses mostly 0-degree angle fibers to make it very stiff.

    3. MaterIal seleCtIonThen we select the specific fibers, resins, and weaves for each bike before manufacturing begins.

    The seatstays of the Roubaix are constructed from E240, a lower modulus but higher tensile strength car-bon that allows the stays to flex and absorb vibration, but remain strong over the life of the bike. These fibers are mainly oriented in 45-degree angles to allow verti-cal compliance, but maintain torsional stiffness.

    4. FaBrICatIon ProCessesWe create the carbon layup for each bike, choose the appropriate manufacturing method, and bake the finished frame.

    Testing is a crucial part of the FACT carbon develop-ment cycle. To be sure that our bikes live up to your (and our) expectations, all of our bikes undergo exten-sive testing in the lab, as well as on the road and trail.

    5. testInGFinally, we lab-test frame prototypes at all load points, ride test them with our pros, then make multiple iterations until were satisfied.

    notHInG Is lIGHter and stIFFerThe Tour-proven Tarmac SL4 represents the pinnacle of our FACT carbon R&D to date. You may be able to find a frameset a few grams lighter than the SL4but what little is gained in gram counting is lost in stiffness and lackluster performance. With an oversized and uniquely shaped head tube for precise handling, plus, our one-piece bottom bracket and chainstay for maximum power transfer, simply no other frameset on the market offers the stunning performance of the SL4. The cutaway SL4 frame to the left gives a closer look at how we design the head tube and one-piece BB/chainstay.

    a PerForManCe-InsPIred Head tUBe desIGnInnovations like the tapered head tube and raised internal ribs on our Tarmac SL4 increase torsional strength and stiffness for greater steering precision, without sacrificing essential vertical compliance.

    B one-PIeCe BB/CHaInstaY FACT construction allows the carbon fibers to run continuously from tube to tube, offering advantages in weight, stiffness, and strength. On our flagship Tarmac SL4 road frame the bottom bracket and chainstays are constructed as one piece to not only be light, but also transfer power input at the pedals into maximum acceleration.

  • GoInG Fast Is no draGEvery aerodynamic product at Specialized is developed through a process of innovative design, meticulous engineering, and relentless testing. Weve always invested heavily in aerodynamic R&D because we firmly believe theres no greater benefit than giving athletes free speed.

    1. GoalOur aero bikes and equipment must include purposeful improvements with true, noticeable performance benefits.

    2. desIGnWe study airflow around various shapes in CFD and the wind tun-nel and optimize the shape based on that data. Each specific part of the frame is then designed to maintain attached airflow, which reduces turbulence and improves aerodynamics.

    4. testThrough wind tunnel testing we study actual airflow and resistance in a controlled environment. Power testing on the road and track validates our CFD and wind tunnel research, resulting in real-world, quantifiable results.

    3. CoMPUtatIonal FlUId dYnaMICsCFD allows us to create a virtual wind tunnel: Its essential in helping us understand how air moves around structures, so we can optimize the shapes of our aero products.

The concept Smoother is Faster originated with our FSR suspension, but we quickly applied the same logic to the road through bikes like the Roubaixas well as an ever-expanding range of equipment. With Roubaixs three consecutive victories at Paris-Roubaix, our pros and enthusiasts alike continue to validate the performance benefits of a smoother ride.

    PlUsH staYs Seatstays on our road bikes and hardtail moun-tain bikes are engineered for vertical compliance.

    tHIn to WInSmaller diameter posts on our road and hardtail mountain bikes increase vertical compliance.

    sHaPed/taPered Head tUBeThe Tarmac SL4s and Roubaixs uniquely shaped head tube/steerer assemblies taper from 1-1/8" at the top to 1-3/8" at the bottom (instead of the industry standard 1-1/2"). This improves vertical compliance for a smoother ride, but through strategic shaping weve also increased torsional stiffness, providing more precise steering.

    How smooth is the Roubaix SL3? Simply put, the difference in vertical compliance between the SL3 and the Madone is comparable to running your tires at 90psi versus 120psi.
