What is Xtreme Bulls?

The Xtreme Bulls Tour, which the PRCA brought back in-house in 2011, showcases the PRCA’s top bull riders and some of the rankest bulls the world has to offer. There were nine Division I Xtreme Bulls events on the Xtreme Bulls Tour, all of which were televised by Great American Country in 90-minute shows.

The pool of bull riders for the Xtreme Bulls Tour includes the top bull riders from the PRCA World Standings as well as contestants who advance through Xtreme Bulls qualifying events.

In Xtreme Bulls events, every contestant competes in the first round, with the top performers advancing to the final round. The winner of the two-head average after the final round wins that stop’s title. Money won on the Xtreme Bulls Tour counts toward the PRCA World Standings for bull riding, which determine the qualifiers for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, but it does not count toward the PRCA’s all-around standings.

In 2011, Shane Proctor accomplished a great deal during his first year competing on the Xtreme Bulls Tour:

• He became just the 10th bull rider to win more than one Tour stop during a single year, winning Feb. 4 at San Antonio and June 30 at Cody, Wyo., in addition to placing fifth at Laughlin, Nev.; second at Bremerton, Wash.; and third at the finale at Ellensburg, Wash. (Cody Whitney and J.W. Harris also won second tour stops later in the 2011 season.)

• He became the first Xtreme Bulls Tour rookie to win the Tour’s year-end championship; he had total earnings of $57,236, the fourth most lucrative Xtreme Bulls Tour season.

• He became just the second Tour champion to win the world title in the same year, joining Matt Austin (2005).

The 2011 finale was won by J.W. Harris, who had two rides with scores over 90 points. Harris has three world championship buckles, but until the June 2011 Reno, Nev., Tour stop, he had won only one Xtreme Bulls event since he shared the 2006 Reno, Nev., title – the stop at which he set the current Xtreme Bulls record with a 96-point ride on Flying Five Rodeo’s Werewolf. At the 2011 Tour Finale in September, Harris scored 92 points to tie Myron Duarte for first in the first round, won the final round with 91 points and picked up $23,610 to nearly double his Xtreme Bulls earnings for the 2011 season, finishing with $49,137.

A few other noteworthy events of the 2011 Xtreme Bulls Tour:

• Cody Whitney came back with a roar from a thumb injury, scoring 91.5 and 92.5 in the first and final rounds in San Antonio on Feb. 19; he sewed up the average with 184 points despite the best efforts of three other riders who scored in the 90s, taking home $24,929 for the weekend.

• Kanin Asay and Howdy Cloud tied for the first-round win at Rapid City in January; it was great news for Cloud, who won his first Xtreme Bulls title in nine years on the Tour, but nearly the end of the season for four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Asay, who had reaggravated a hip injury 10 days earlier and ended up spending most of the season rehabbing after June surgery.

• Aaron Pass won the Tour stop in Laughlin, Nev., earning $16,941 -- nearly twice what he won in all of 2010, his rookie season.
