PARK WOMeN’S VOLLeyBALL

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, offering stu-dents the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle

and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east, gives Park University students multiple entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland area of metropolitan Kansas City, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The North-land is locally referred to as “north of the river.” Contained wholly within Missouri, it encom-passes portions of Platte and Clay counties, including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Gladstone, Liberty and North Kansas City. Kansas City is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the border between the two states. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City and the Kansas Speed-way, which hosts multiple NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year, including two Sprint Cup Series event in the spring and fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Explorers of World TeamTennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Expe-rience, which includes the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits historic Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. In 2010, Park University made its third appearance in five seasons, and its fifth overall, in the national tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Leawood Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas City, Kan., keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

Best Value, Nationwide Park continues to increase access to higher education by offering the quality under-graduate and graduate degrees students desire at locations, times and delivery formats that best serve their needs. In 2010, the University was ranked as the No. 1 value among private colleges and universities by Parents & Colleges, an online resource for parents of college-bound students. According to Parents & Colleges, institutions included on this list offer a diversity of de-grees, have affordable tuitions and/or offer generous financial aid, and report the highest SAT or ACT scores for the incoming class. Park was cited as offering “both proximity to big-city excitement and the safe, relaxed atmosphere of a small town… the student body represents 50 states and 100 countries, and the school prides itself on its diversity and global outlook. Tuition for full-time undergraduates is a fraction of other private institutions, and average class size and student-to-faculty ratio are low.”Founded Founded in 1875 in Parkville, Mo., Park University has developed into a comprehensive, independent institution that is a national leader in higher education. In 2000, Park achieved university status and now serves more than 24,000 students annually at 40 campus centers in 21 states and online.

Serving an ethnically diverse student population and non-traditional adult learners has, for many years, been central to Park’s educational mission. Even in its first year, Park University enrolled women students as well as men, something that was unusual at the time; and two of the original 17 students were Native Americans. Park was also an early integrator when it welcomed African-American students to live in Park’s residence halls in the 1950s.Present Providing such access has developed considerable diversity among the student popula-tion, with more than 650 international students from 110 countries, and a 42 percent student representation from racial, ethnic and cultural groups typically underrepresented in colleges and universities. The University has repeatedly been recognized as one of the top 100 Ameri-can colleges/universities in the nation graduating Hispanic, African-American and American-Indian students. In addition, extracurricular activities and championship-caliber athletic pro-grams complement Park’s outstanding scholastic programs. Park offers numerous degree programs online, and it maintains a long-standing rela-tionship with the U.S. military for which it has been recognized as one of the largest pro-viders of online undergraduate education to military learners worldwide. Park has received international recognition by Military Advanced Education magazine as one of its “Top 20 Mil-itary-Friendly Colleges and Universities,” citing Park’s “innovative academic degree programs steeped in excellence.”

Park University director of athletics Claude English begins his 17th full year and his 18th season as the University’s AD in 2012-13, starting his tenure as athletics director in January of 1996. In his

nearly 17-year term, English has guided Park through a steady athletics program improvement, including enhancing facilities and providing student-athletes with a first-rate experience at Park. In 2011-12, English had chief oversight in Park’s newest addition to its list of facilities when the Track & Field Complex opened as a train-ing ground for the track and cross country teams. The six-lane, compe-tition-ready track sits adjacent to the 1,500-seat Julian Field, which is also undergoing seating renovations in 2012-13, and the Park Univer-sity Softball Complex, which will feature an upgraded sound system in the upcoming year. English’s tenure has also included the opening of Comfort Field, home to the Park University baseball program, an agreement with The National Golf Club of Kansas City, which gives the women’s golf pro-gram one of the finest practice and competition facilities in the Mid-west, and Breckon Sports Center, home to the Park University men’s and women’s volleyball programs, in addition to administrative offices. In 2010, English was honored for his service as an athletics ad-ministrator by being inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, representing the NAIA in a group of sev-en individuals honored by the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation, which supports the McLendon Minority Postgraduate Scholarship fund. Later in 2010-11, English was honored by a second hall of fame in his home town, earning a spot in the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame in Columbus, Ga. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, beginning a 15-year coaching run with the Pirates that saw a trip to the NAIA Fab Four in 1998 and 182 coach-ing wins, making English the Pirates’ winningest coach. He owns 227 total wins, which includes a three-year head coaching stint at his alma mater, the University of Rhode Island, an NCAA Division I school in the Atlantic 10 Conference. He was the A-10 coach of the year in 1981-82, and in 1997-98, after guiding Park to a 27-8 overall mark, the win-ningest season in a Park history that dates back to 1961-62, he was honored with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsman-ship. His team was also honored that season, earning the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award. In his playing career, English was a two-year standout at Christian College in Dallas, Texas, before finishing his collegiate career at Rhode Island. After college, English was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers and played one NBA season, 1970-71, before finishing his basketball career with the Hartford Capitals of the Eastern Basketball Association. He was a three-year captain for the Capitals and helped the team to an Eastern Association title in 1973-74. As director of athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 53 con-ference championships, and in each of his previous 16 seasons as ath-letics director, at least one Park program has represented the Pirates in NAIA postseason play. He has also watched 98 student-athletes earn All-America honors, and 200 student-athletes have been named Dak-tronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, the highest academic honor bestowed upon a student-athlete by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. In 2008-09, Park’s department of athletics carried an overall grade point average better than 3.0 and the school earned a record seven NAIA scholar team designations. In his most recent year as AD, Eng-lish’s department posted four scholar teams, which carry a 3.0 GPA or better as a team through the academic year.

PARK women’s volleyball

Michael Talamantes had a whirlwind first season leading both the men’s and women’s volleyball programs, guiding the women to their first 20-win season since 2006 before coach-

ing the men’s team to its third NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Invita-tional Tournament title in school history.

While leading Park to the 2012 Tachikara-NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Invitational Tournament championship, Talamantes earned the AVCA NAIA Coach of the Year award along with the

MAMVIC West Coach of the Year after leading Park to a 21-7 overall record and a 9-1 conference mark. On the women’s side, he led Park to a third-place finish in the AMC standings with a 22-10 overall record and AMC record of 11-5. Under Talamantes, Park won its third national championship in program history and Fray Luis Fajardo Arteaga earned his second AVCA All-America award. Talamantes also coached Park’s first-ever Capital One Academic All-Americans, as Vanessa Lawrenz landed on the volleyball first-team, and Raphael Vieira landed on the men’s at-large second-team. Talamantes came to Park after his most recent stop as the head women’s volleyball coach at Occidental College, an NCAA Division III institution in Los Angeles, Calif., where he coached the Ti-gers for three seasons, from 2008 to 2010. In 2008, Talamantes overhauled an Occidental program that had averaged four wins per year in the previous five seasons. He led Oc-cidental to a 5-5 finish in its last 10 matches of the 2008 season, and the Tigers won more matches than any Occidental squad in eight years despite going without a senior, putting a starting lineup on the floor that included just three student-athletes with prior collegiate playing experience. On the heels of a nine-player freshman class, Occidental won the Tiger Fall Classic tournament championship in 2009, and the team had its first all-conference player since 2002. Occidental also beat a region-ally ranked program, defeating Pomona Pitzer, helping the team finish 7-2 over its final nine matches, missing the conference tournament by one spot. In 2010, Talamantes put his finishing stamp on the Occidental women’s volleyball program, leading the Tigers to a 25-8 record, one of the most successful seasons in school history. His Tigers posted a school-record 12-match winning streak, only after a 10-match winning streak earlier in the season, helping the team reach as high as No. 3 in its regional rankings, earning a spot in the NCAA Division III national poll. Occidental beat its first nationally ranked opponent since the 2001 season, using four sets to knock off Redlands in September, and the team secured its first postseason appearance since 1983, finishing second in the SCIAC, its best showing in the conference since 1992. Prior to Talamantes’ three-year stint at Occidental, he was a suc-cessful boys and girls high school coach in California, coaching the girls at Rosary High School in Orange County, helping transform a pro-gram that had not qualified for the playoffs in its previous six seasons, leading Rosary to four-straight playoff appearances and helping the program to top 10 recognition in Division One and in Orange County.

Most coaches will tell you they don’t like replacing an entire roster of seniors, but when

Mike Talamantes talks about his new-comers for the 2012 season, he can’t help but smile and wonder just how good they can be. Park University’s women’s volley-ball program brings back one returner, senior outside hitter Patricia Souza, who was the team’s offensive sparkplug last year, earning a spot on the AMC’s first team and leading Park with 3.45 kills per set. But she’s not alone when it comes to offensive firepower. “We are expecting a lot out of Patri-cia,” Talamantes said. “She has to lead us on the floor, but it’s more important that she teaches the culture of this program to a really talented group of (10) new-comers. Opponents are going to game plan against her, but this year, she’s got a lot of help offensively. One player Talamantes is counting on early is 6-foot-2 right-side hitter Wan-essa Siqueira, who is no stranger to volleyball in the American Mid-west Conference. She spent the 2011-12 academic year at Oral Rob-erts University and did not play for the Eagles, and in 2010, she was the AMC Freshman of the Year for league-rival Hannibal-LaGrange University, collecting 3.3 kills per set and 68 service aces for the Tro-jans, who ended the year 19-12 and 10-6 in the AMC. Lauren Purdy also transferred to Park from an NCAA Division I institution, Texas-Arlington, but did not play for the Mavericks in 2011. Purdy, a 6-foot middle blocker from Arlington, Texas, last played in 2009, helping West Texas A&M to the NCAA Division II na-tional championship match in St. Paul, Minn. In the championship match, she finished with two kills and two blocks, and during the season, she was a regular in the starting six for the Buffs, averaging 1.65 kills and earning 131 blocks in 2009. “Those two will be crucial parts of the offense,” Talamantes said. “We’ll also lean on Pamela Lima, who had a great junior college sea-son last year at Coffeyville, and as always, the offense is as good as its setter. We have a pretty good one in Kat Partridge.” Partridge, from Liberty, Mo., was expected to play for Park in 2011 but sat out the season after finishing second in assists per set in 2010 at MCC-Longview. Lima averaged 4.62 kills for the Ravens last season, finishing second-team All-Jayhawk. She will be joined by Coffeyville teammate Melissa Honn, who totaled 745 digs for the Coffeyville defense in 2011. “Our defense will look different, no doubt,” Talamantes said. “We’ll anchor it around blocking this year after really being very libero-oriented last year. Losing a great defender like Vanessa Law-renz hurts, but we have a couple players that have stepped up into that role. Jess Ferguson is a freshman that shows promise and has the right attitude, and Raissa Herczfeld has been a pleasant surprise because she can rival Vanessa in ball control.” Purdy will anchor the Pirates’ putback ability at the net, and Christina Runyon will give opposing offenses something to think about when she is on the floor, standing 6-foot-2 as a freshman from

Wentzville, Mo. Park begins the year in a bit of an unfamiliar position for the program, sitting one spot outside the NAIA Top 25 to begin the year. The Pirates have received votes in the poll in past seasons, but the team has never been within striking distance of the Top 25 to begin the year. “I’m not surprised that we started earning national respect this year,” Talamantes said. “I am a little surprised it came this early, with as many newcomers as we have. We were playing our best in Novem-ber and we were one set away from playing for a conference cham-pionship. That still stings a little, especially for Patricia. We train to be our best in November, and that’s what we’re working toward this year. Our schedule gives us a chance, if we can win some matches, to make some noise.” The Pirates will begin the 2012 season Friday in Des Moines, Iowa, at the Grand View University Invitational, which includes No. 13 Grand View, the tournament’s host. “I don’t have win-loss expectations for the weekend, but I do want to see our chemistry,” Talamantes said. “Evangel is traditionally strong, so that will be a good first test, and we end it against the 13th ranked team in NAIA volleyball. If we come out with a couple wins and an improved team, it is a good start.”

In, 2011, Mike Talamantes led Park to its first 20-win season since 2006, ending the year in the AMC semifinals with a 22-11 overall record.
