ASCE Richmond Branch Newsletter Volume 5 Issue 1 October 2012

    President's Message

One of the most rewarding aspects of being involved inASCE, for me personally, has been involvement ineducational outreach events. These events have given methe chance to work directly with students of all ages, andit has always been great to see how excited the kids getand to be able to help out the next generation ofengineers.

As I'm sure many of you have seen, engineering careershave been consistently ranked high for rewarding careers, job availability, and monetary compensation. Yet, it always seems that it isdifficult to get students interested in science, technology, engineering, andmathematics (STEM) programs. Through ASCE, we are able to help reach outto the students and inspire them to pursue these types of careers.

In the past few years, the Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest has gottenprogressively larger, the Chesterfield Science Fair has grown to a multi-dayevent with competitions and activities, the University of Virginia Chapterhas expanded their group and brought their competitions to a higher level, and countless other progressive educational outreach events have beensuccessful in the region. The fact that these activities are growing isattributed to the educators and volunteers who are inspiring these studentsand providing hands on opportunities to experience STEM outside of theclassroom. We plan on continuing to offer support for these events, as wellas any new opportunities that arise.

This year, our branch is fortunate enough to have three very excitededucational outreach chairs. Ashley, Caleb and Josiah are coming up withnew ways to improve our current programs, and introducing new ideas toreach more students. As we continue to contribute to this effort, I hope youwill continue to support ASCE's efforts and help send our educationaloutreach program to higher levels.

I'd like to take this opportunity to ask you to consider helping us reach thenext level. If you are available on October 11th, please join us and play inour golf tournament to benefit our scholarship and educational outreachfunds. This is a fun day for everyone involved, and all of the proceeds godirectly to the students. If you are unavailable on the 11th, or are not a

golfer, there are many other ways to get involved! More information can befound on our website, www.ascerichmond.org .

Also, we will soon be starting our fundraising drive for our Popsicle StickBridge Contest. This contest had over 200 students participate last year, andwe are expecting even more this February! We are hoping to raise enoughfunds to buy an additional testing apparatus to prevent us from limiting thenumber of students who can enter. I understand that funds are tight rightnow, so if contributing monetarily is not an option, we are always lookingfor volunteers to help out with events throughout the year. We hope you'lljoin us and look forward to seeing you soon!

October Branch Meeting - High Bridge State Park

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (VDCR) selectedSTV for the challenge of transforming a nearly 100-year-old abandoned, historic steel viaduct railroad bridge spanning 2,419 feet and towering 120feet over the Appomattox River in Prince Edward and Cumberland Counties,VA. Abandoned for seven years, High Bridge is now the centerpiece and finallink of a 31-mile rails-to-trails pathway for hikers, bikers, and horsebackriders in High Bridge Trail State Park which allows visitors to not only safelywalk across the bridge, but also take in the pre-Civil War era history of asite more than 120-feet above the Appomattox River.

Join Ron Briggs, STV Project Manager, for a discussion about some uniquechallenges in converting this historic railroad bridge as well as some of thevery unique history of this project site and how STV incorporated this intothe design of the structure.
