Foreword by Capt Mac McDonaldUnit Welfare Officer3 (UK) Div HQ and Sig Regt

    Captain Mac McDonald

With the leaves falling and the cold mornings appearing more regular, it is fair to say that winter is upon us.On that note can I recommend that heating systems and radiators within SFA are turned on and tested.Past experience tells us that faults, resulting in complete heating failure will occur within the first couple ofweeks of being turned on. As important is the Winter Measures that should be put into place if you are

going away for a period of time visiting friends and family this will ensure you dont come back to aDisaster. Heating should be placed on a low setting and left on whilst you are away from the home, inaddition giving a key to a neighbour is not a bad idea, as this will allow them to check your house from timeto time.

Most of you will be aware that the Unit held its annual Big Brew event within the HUB. The day as everwas well organised and supported by all members of the Sig Regt and Div HQ, raising some 1200 forSSAFA. A Big thank you to Staff Sergeant Harvey for organising this years eventWell Done!At the request of families I intend to open next years event up to families and friends so please keep aneye out for the event anticipated to be in October 13.

So whats on the Horizon, well we have just secured the much needed funding required to purchase twonew Bouncy Castles at a cost of more than 3500. These I expect will see some heavy use next year, asever Unit personnel may hire these for private functions at a cost of 45 for the 10ft x 10ft castle and 60for the larger 15ft x 15ft, this offers a saving of some 40 and 60 respectively on local hire charges.

At the time of writing this foreword only 47 days stand between us and Christmas Day, so why not takeadvantage of one of the shopping trips to purchase what I can only imagine is a large Christmas list. ThePRI minibus will also be available for hire over the Christmas period; however I would suggest you contactRegimental MT (01980672468) and place a booking. The minibus is normally in high demand during thisperiod with families visiting for the festive period.

Finally planning for the Ladies Christmas Function and Childrens Christmas Party are now in full swing, asever we desperately need a few ladies to help out on the committee, this will ensure a successful night, soplease come forward.

202 Signal Squadron Officer Commanding (OC) Major C DixonSquadron Sergeant Major (SSM) WO2 Brown

    OCs Foreword

The Squadron has been training hard this month with elements on exercise in East Anglia; others away on courses and theremainder preparing for Regimental exercise. The training and hard work will ensure we as a Squadron are as prepared as possible

for the challenges ahead supporting 1 Mechanized Brigade during their build up to operations in Afghanistan. But it hasnt beenall hard work there have been some excellent opportunities for the Squadron to enjoy themselves. The troop visit to RAF BrizeNorton; Regimental sports competition and Big Brew all breaking up the in Barracks Routine. I am looking forward to seeing howthe Squadron is getting on when I visit the many activities and Exercises which are ongoing. I would like to thank the Squadron fortheir hard work and for the families for your continued support.

    Past

A warm welcome goes out to the following personnel who recently arrived within the Sqn:

Officers: Capt Hudson who has taken on the daunting task of Sqn 2I/C.SSgts: Bird and Campbell who have fallen into FOB and Bastion Troop not forgetting our very own newly promoted SSgtChaffer.Sgts : Adams, Downer, Metcalf, Rees and Stewart who have all joined Bastion Troop, plus Sgt Boon joining the mighty LashkaGah Troop.Cpls : Antoine and Watson.

The Sqn is now almost fully manned with only a few PIDs left to fill before Op HERRICK 18.

    Present

Ex FLYING BUFFALO RAF Brize Norton - (28 Aug 12)

With a busy scheduled month, the Squadron conducted a PACEX ready for Exercise PASHTUN PANTHER. This involvednumerous late nights and early starts, even managing to fit in the COs Health Fair and Challenge Cup.

A lot of the boys and girls are still away on their pre-deployment courses and with our numbers now bolstered, excitement isstarting to grow. That said this excitement is soon quashed whenever we hear about the daily PT.

    Grenade Range Warminster - (25 Sep 12)

This month saw a cracking Grenade L109 Range ran by Sgt Ware in Warminster. The feedback from the shop floor was verypositive. He was assisted in the smooth running of this range by both Sgt Mitchell and Cpl Latusek.

    Grenade Ready Throw

As a treat, on departing to the almighty 206 Signal Squadron, Lt Whinton gifted her oldSquadron a visit to RAF Brize Norton. It was an opportunity for a go on the C130

Simulator. It turned out to be a fantastic day with a much needed bit of Squadronbonding SSgt Chaffer was a complete flying jelly, and I, SSgt Bickford, was a trueborn Top Gun.

    Past

Life in 206 Sig Sqn continues at a frantic pace! Op Olympics was a resounding success for the Sqn and we have now recovered all ourpersonnel. The longest attachment to the Operation was Sig Smith 860 having completed just over 2 months as a coach driver.

The Sqn conducted an Adventure Training package in Castlemartin during the mid two weeks of August. A great 2 week package wasdelivered by Lt Brown, Sgt Hall and LCpl Smith. All individuals participated in trekking, climbing and kayaking with Lt Browngetting the maximum use out of his golf clubs and time off, no change there some may say!

    Present

The Sqn Ops Officer Capt Coutts has been the only continuity in recent months balancing the demands of the Division, RegimentalOps and lead for the MACA Headquarters, aswell as being the only Sqn officer in station for large periods of time. The Sqn has had alarge turn over in key appointments and we say farewell to Capt Rachel Clayton who moves to 7 ABSS (207) to assume theappointment of 2IC, Lt Benjy Brown who moves to 1 MBSS (215) and Lt Alice Gifford who moves to 11 Sig Regt. YofS SSgt JulieOConnor moves to 30 Sig Regt next week and will have an additional two members of the family shortly, congratulations to bothJulie and Wes. SSgt Cansfield moves to 10 Sig Regt and SSgt Ali Johnstone has completed her service and moves to BT, best wishesto both Neil and Ali. Sgt Matty Adams makes the short trip to 202 Sig Sqn.

The Sqn welcomes Capt Donna Gavin, 2Lt Mel French, 2Lt Stu Dunster, SSgt Chris Swan and his wife Susan and SSgt JamesJohnson and his wife Maria.

Cambrai Troop have been busy, raising 5000 for the ABF, SSgt Neil Cansfield completed the great north run with Cpl Barley and SigTyrell whilst the remainder of the Troop conducted various bag packing days at the local supermarkets.

    Future

Mons Troop are preparing to take on the Regiments FALCON capability which promises to be a busy and rewarding time. Dare wesay that we are looking forward to back loading our COMORANT capability in the near future.

Cambrai and Normandy Troop are currently preparing for Ex Red Resolve and Iron Resolve 12 which are running throughoutOctober. This will prove to be a testing environment for our new Troop Commanders, they will have to build and commission themain and forward Headquarters prior to the annual Staff College Visit. The Garrison bonfire will be headed up this year by MonsTroop and the Sqn FofS. As we progress into the later stages of the year we will conduct a week of Sqn mandatory training awayfrom the local area.

    New APP for Military Families

I am ex Royal Navy and now travel around Europe for work. I came up with the idea while travelling.

The concept of the app is for the parent to read their child's favourite bedtime story and record their voice and takepictures of the book, or even make their own story up and involve the child to draw the pictures. Then once theparent is away from home their story can be played back to them on an iphone, ipad or android pad or phone.Once it went live, approx 2 months ago an Army Major friend of mine said I should contact you as he thought it was agreat app.If you need any other information please let me know.Unit B, Deacons House
