Founded in 1819 by Captain Aldridge
Partridge, Norwich University is nestled
in the Green Mountains in Northfield,
Vermont. Norwich is the nation’s oldest
private military college.
Today Norwich University offers edu-
cational opportunities for both undergrad-
uate and graduate students. The
undergraduate experience offers a choice
of being in the Corps of Cadets or as a
civilian student. Both lifestyles are inte-
grated within the classroom, athletic
teams and student organizations.
Norwich’s undergraduate student pop-
ulation of 2200 hail from 40 different
states and 20 foreign countries. Eighty-
one percent of the 157 faculty hold termi-
nal degrees. Norwich boasts a student to
faculty ratio of 14:1 and is proud of its
long tradition of excellence in teaching
and personal attention given to students.
Thirty academic programs, including
a teacher/education licensure program,
and four ROTC programs are offered.
Norwich is the birthplace of the ROTC
program due to the innovative educa-
tional methods of Alden Partridge.
As an NCAA Division III school, the
University sponsors varsity athletic com-
petition in men’s and women’s ice
hockey, football, men’s and women’s bas-
ketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s
and women’s cross country, baseball,
softball, men’s and women’s lacrosse,
women’s volleyball, wrestling, men’s ten-
nis and men’s and women’s swimming
and diving, as well as men’s and women’s
rugby.
On campus Norwich offers 80 clubs
and organizations including academic and
professional societies, special interest
clubs and a range of religious, military
and community service organizations.
Under its School of Graduate
Studies, Norwich offers 10 online gradu-
ate degrees at the Master’s level and one
certificate program. Enrollment in the
graduate school is 1200 students.
Norwich University is located in
Northfield, Vt., just 15 miles from Mont-
pelier, the state capital.

Anthony MarianoDirector of Athletics
Well into his fourth decade of serviceto Norwich University, Tony Marianocontinues to provide leadership to aNorwich athletics program that has at-tained unprecedented levels of success.The 2003-04 season was arguably thefinest in school history as all 16 varsity
sports teams competed in postseason action, highlighted by thefootball team's first bowl game appearance in 20 years, and themen's ice hockey team competing in its sixth Division III "FrozenFour." Additionally, the Norwich men's rugby team qualified forthe 16-team USA Rugby Collegiate Championship for the first timein program history.
Mariano is in his 19th year as the Director of Intercolle-giate Athletics, after spending his first 16 seasons in Northfield asa coach. He was head men's soccer coach from 1978-84 beforebeing named head men's ice hockey coach in 1982. Under Mari-ano's guidance, the Norwich men's ice hockey team made its firstpostseason appearance in 1984, and went on to appear in sevenECAC tournaments and earn two NCAA Championship berths.Mariano stepped down as head coach in 1992 when he assumedhis current duties as athletic director.
Mariano is a 1974 graduate of St. Lawrence Universitywith a degree in physical education. He received his master's degreefrom Norwich in 1975. Tony and his wife Gail reside in Northfield.Their son, Tom, is an assistant hockey coach at Hobart.
David BotelhoHead Athletic Trainer
David Botelho is in his 17th season asthe head athletic trainer at Norwich Uni-versity, while serving as a clinical instruc-tor in the athletic training educationprogram at NU.Botelho came to Norwich from Hamp-
ton University where he served fouryears in the same capacity.
Botelho is a 1989 graduate of Rhode Island College witha degree in physical education and a minor in psychology. Heearned a master's degree in education with an emphasis in athletictraining at Old Dominion University in 1991. He also taught classesin the prevention and care of athletic injuries at Hampton andODU. Botelho is certified by both the National Athletic TrainersAssociation (NATA) and the American Red Cross.
Botelho resides in Essex Junction with his wife Gayle, andtheir sons Jake, Brady and Dylan.
Scott MullenEquipment Manager
Scott Mullen begins his ninth season atNorwich. A 1984 graduate of NU,Mullen previously served for 13 years asthe assistant equipment manager atDartmouth, where he worked with a va-riety of Ivy League championshipteams.
Mullen and his wife Mellissa are the proud parents of twochildren, Shawn (17) and Sarah (13). In his free time, Mullen enjoysexercising and spending time with his family.

Charlie CrosbyAssociate Director
Charlie Crosby is in his seventh year inthe Norwich University sports informa-tion department.Crosby oversees the communication
for the men’s and women’s hockey andfootball teams.He also runs the popular “Charlie’s
Corner” list-serve email list and serves as the liaison for commu-nication between the sports information department and North-east Sports Network (NSN), which broadcasts 50 NorwichUniversity events each year including athletic contests, Commence-ment and the Todd Lecture Series.
Crosby previously served as the Director of Major Giftsin the NU Office of Institutional Advancement. Before that, hewas a sales manager for LeCroy, a New York-based firm that de-signs, builds and sells digital high-speed oscilloscopes.
Crosby is a 1963 graduate of Norwich University. He wasa member of both the baseball and rifle teams at NU during hiscollege days. In 2001, he was inducted into the Norwich Hall ofFame.
Crosby and his wife Carole reside in Northfield. Theyhave two daughters and two granddaughters.
Mark AdkinsDirector
Mark Adkins enters his first year as theSports Information Director at Nor-wich University where he will oversee allaspects of the Sports Information De-partment. Adkins will serve as the primary point
for person men's and women's rugby,volleyball, men’s and women’s lacrosse and wrestling.
Before coming to Norwich in July 2011, Adkins servedas the Sports Information Director at his alma mater WartburgCollege (Iowa) for 11 years.
While at Wartburg, Adkins managed sports informationfor 19 varsity athletic programs and was instrumental in the suc-cessful marketing of the college’s athletic programs and accom-plishments through traditional and social media.
Active in Collegiate Sports Information Directors ofAmerica (CoSida), Adkins serves as the national vice-chair of theFred Stabley Writing Contest and on the Academic All-AmericanNational Committee as Director of New Media.
Adkins has already helped establish the first Norwich Uni-versity Cadets Facebook page, Youtube page and will take overNorwich Athetics Twitter account for the 2011-12 season.
Adkins and his wife Terri live in Northfield with theirdaughter Callie.
Matt AlburyIntern
Matt Albury enters his second year asthe sports information intern. He willassist Norwich sports information di-rector Mark Adkins, associate directorCharlie Crosby, and assistant directorDerek Dunning in the day-to-day oper-ations of the office.
Albury is responsible for multiple duties including act-ing as the primary statistician for football, basketball and volley-ball, producing game day programs, and assisting with websitemaintenance. He will serve as the point person for men’s andwomen’s basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving,and baseball.
Albury, a 2010 graduate of Norwich, spent the previousfour years as an undergraduate assistant in the sports informa-tion office.
He lives in Northfield.
Derek DunningAssistant Director
Derek Dunning is in his second yearas an assistant director of sports infor-mation. He is the point person for themen's and women's ice hockey teams,men's and women's soccer teams, soft-ball, men’s tennis and cross countryteams.
He graduated from the State University of New York atOswego in 2009 with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and anathletic coaching minor. While at Oswego, he wrote for the Os-wegonian school newspaper as well as the student-run televisionstation, WTOP, where he provided color commentary and in-game analysis for hockey broadcasts.
Dunning was a three-year member of the cross countryteam and interned with the Oswego State Hockey Blueline Clubassisting with marketing, media guide sales, and gameday man-agement as well as with the Palladium-Times daily newspaper.
Before coming to Norwich, he has served as theUSCHO.com Division III Women's Correspondent since 2007and worked as a sports reporter for the Leader-Herald daily news-paper in Gloversville, N.Y.
He resides in Northfield.

“Learning from the past” 2012 Softball Preview

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – "Those who fail to learn from
the past are doomed to repeat it." – Sir Winston
Churchill.
That's the motto of the 2012 Norwich softball
team as it looks to get back into Great Northeast Ath-
letic Conference (GNAC) Tournament after narrowly
missing the playoffs one year ago.
"The first day of practice this year we talked
about learning from the past," Norwich head coach
Greg McGrath said. "Last year we had a great shot at
finishing in a playoff spot and then we fell apart down
the stretch."
McGrath, who enters his third year at the helm
of the NU softball program has been working to try
and build a culture within the program that he feels
will help translate to success down the road.
"We're focusing on our energy and enthusiasm
being high, as well as being positive and supportive as
a team," he said. "Our goals for the season coming in
were to have a fun season and enjoy it as well as make
the playoffs. Last year we should have, could have,
would have made the playoffs, this year we expect
ourselves to make the playoffs."
The Cadets return 10 players from last year's
squad that finished 10-22 overall and 10-14 in GNAC
play. They have also added six newcomers that have
already stepped in and earned significant roles in the
lineup.
"We're still very young as we had a large group
of freshmen last season that are now sophomores,"
McGrath said. "We only have two juniors and one sen-
ior so we're similarly young like we were last year."
Norwich will need some new faces to emerge
this season after losing GNAC First Team All-Confer-
ence catcher Marley Balasco and Seana Ellsworth to
graduation last spring. The Cadets will also be without
sophomore utility player Briana Day (Yelm, Washing-
ton) to start the season. Day was a GNAC Second
Team All-Conference selection last year as a rookie
and currently continues to recover from shoulder sur-
gery.
"We lost two talented four-year players in Mar-
ley Balasco and Seana Ellsworth," McGrath said.
"They were both key bats in our lineup and losing
them both is tough. However, this year we are deeper
and have more talent through the roster of 16 than we
have ever had before in my three years."
The Cadets' roster features just one senior and
two juniors with the bulk of the squad made up of
eight sophomores that will be integral to the team's
success this spring.
Junior second baseman Noel Byers (North
Branch, Mich.), junior outfielder Joanie Emerson
(Tyngsboro, Mass.) and sophomore outfielder Pam
Dubey (Campton, N.H.) will be counted on this sea-
son for leadership.
"Noel is an outstanding player at second base
for us that will be counted on this year in a leadership
role," McGrath said. "She's a good hitter, great leader
and she knows the game of softball inside and out.
She'll help us in all aspects of the games this season.
Pam is a returning sophomore captain that leads us ad-
ministratively and keeps us working hard at practice as
well as focused on conditioning. Joanie is a team
leader at practices, during games and off the field."
Byers hit .313 last year with one home run and
16 runs batted in. Emerson hit .375 with one home run
and five RBIs in 16 at-bats, while Dubey provided
stalwart defense.
NU also returns two sophomore starters in
shortstop Abby Belcher (Winthrop, Mass.) and first
baseman Erin Clark (Oxbow, Vt.). Belcher led the
team with 29 runs scored to go along with a .311 bat-
ting average as well as three home runs and 12 RBIs
last season. Clark ranked sixth in hits with a .284 aver-
age and eight RBIs.
Norwich also has a pair of talented freshmen in
pitcher Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) and out-
fielder Kelly Travers (Whitman, Mass.) that have al-
ready made immediate impacts for the Cadets this
season.
"Corinne has already emerged as our No. 1
pitcher and Kelly has been a consistent hitter in the
No. 3 spot in our order," McGrath said.
So far the results speak for themselves for Nor-
wich.

break trip last week at the Snowbird Classic in Myrtle
Beach, South Carolina with a 6-4 record, which was
their first winning record since 2006 on a spring break
trip.
"One thing we changed in terms of our ap-
proach was focusing on hitting," McGrath said. "We
came out ready to hit and we did. We hit and scored
runs in most of games. We waited until the late innings
in some of our games and we need to learn to get our
energy and enthusiasm up early. That challenge is part
of us being very young and having to learn and ma-
ture."
Norwich opens its 2012 GNAC league sched-
ule on Friday at Mount Ida with the first of three con-
ference doubleheaders in a span of three days. First
pitch is schedule for 3 p.m. The Cadets continue on to
face Emerson on Saturday and then St. Joseph
(Conn.). on Sunday. Both of Saturday and Sunday's
doubleheaders will begin at noon.

Greg McGrath enters his third
season at the helm of the Norwich
softball program after guiding the
Cadets to a 23-46 record in his
first two years.
The Cadets finished 9-15 in GNAC play in 2010 and
pulled a first round upset of Lasell in the GNAC Tour-
nament to advance to the semifinals before bowing
out.
Last year, the Cadets upped their league record to 10-
14 but narrowly missed qualifying for the playoffs.
McGrath is a 2001 graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh,
where he double majored in politcal science and crimi-
nal justice.
He also did his graduate work at SUNY Plattsburgh
and received a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, Lead-
ership & Administration degree in 2003.
McGrath started working at Norwich in August 2005
and was a Vermont ASA umpire for two years from
2008-2009.
He also serves as the Director of Student Activities at
Norwich and the Wise Campus Center.

Lutfiyya Muhammad enters her
second season at Norwich Univer-
sity as assistant softball coach.
She also serves as the assistant
women’s basketball coach.
Graduating from Girard College High School in
Philadelphia, PA in 2006 with academic honors,
Muhammad began her college education and basket-
ball career at NCAA Division I Delaware State Uni-
versity.
A Dean’s List student at Delaware State, she was a
member of the 2006-07 Lady Hornets basketball team
that won the Mideastern Athletic Conference (MEAC)
championship. She transferred after her freshman year
to NCAA Division II Cheyney University on a full ac-
ademic scholarship.
While at Cheyney, Muhammad continued to excel in
the classroom, landing on the Dean’s List once again.
She had an outstanding basketball career and gradu-
ated summa cum laude.
On the court, Muhammad led the Cheyney Lady
Wolves to back-to-back conference playoff appear-
ances. She was her team’s captain for two seasons,
team co-MVP for two seasons, and a two-time Second
Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
(PSAC) player selection.
