Literary professionals Ryan D. Harbage, Erin Hosier or Melissa Sarver will read a sample of your work, then meet with you for a one-on-one, 15-minute consultation. SPACE IS LIMITED.

Via e-mail, forward a 10-page sample of your manuscript (preferably the first 10 pages) as a Microsoft Word attachment to nicole.swift@mdc.edu. In the subject line, type “Manuscript Consultation” and your last name. Samples should have page numbers, be double-spaced, have 1.5 inch margins, and 12 point type set in Times New Roman. Your name, phone number and e-mail address should appear on the first page. Also, attach a ONE PAGE synopsis of your manuscript in the same format. In order to give your consultant time to review your work, submissions must be received NO LATER THAN 5 p.m. April 16.

Ryan D. Harbage is founder of The Fischer-Harbage Agency. He represents several bestselling authors, including Frank Calabrese Jr., Bill Eppridge, Aliya S. King, Robert Graysmith and Edward Klein. He has placed books with all major publishers in the U.S. and the U.K. Prior to being recruited to work as an agent, Harbage was an editor at Simon Spotlight Entertainment, Little, Brown & Company and Dutton/Viking/Plume at The Penguin Group (USA). Ryan teaches nonfiction writing at The New School, Pratt and Mediabistro. Erin Hosier has been agenting since 2001. She got her start at The Gernert Company, and moved to Dunow, Carlson & Lerner in 2007. Recent projects include the biography of 1970, Fire & Rain by David Browne (Da Capo), the memoir,The Wilder Life by Wendy McClure (Riverhead), and Flatscreen, a debut novel from Adam Wilson (Harper Perennial). She primarily works with nonfiction authors and has a special interest in popular culture, music, sociology and memoir. Melissa Sarver joined The Elizabeth Kaplan Literary Agency in 2006. In fiction she is interested in adult, YA and middle grade, and is looking for literary and commercial projects. She especially enjoys family sagas, multicultural stories and similarly emotional stories with dystopian themes. In nonfiction, she is looking for voice-driven narrative nonfiction, memoir, lifestyle, business, travel writing, pop culture, cookbooks and food writing.

Writing for Book Deals: From Pitch to Proposal Meets daily: Wed., May 2 - Fri., May 4, 2 - 5 p.m.

This workshop is ideal for nonfiction writers, from authors of memoir to practical nonfiction, although novelists will benefit too. Just as television writers need a spec script and musicians need a demo to get agents and deals, authors of memoir and nonfiction need a book proposal — and novelists need a pitch, overview and query letter. Lectures include a thorough description of each component of a book proposal, a concise breakdown of how agents and publishers work, how to find and secure an agent and how writers are compensated.

How To Get Published SuccessfullyMeets daily: Thurs., May 3 - Fri., May 4, 6 - 8

p.m..

It is the greatest time in history to be a writer. The barrier to publishing has been torn down and now anyone can get published. But to get published successfully is a whole other matter. Eckstut and Sterry, authors of The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published, take you through the entire publishing process. Topics covered include choosing the right idea; creating a blockbuster title; crafting an attention-getting pitch; putting together a selling proposal/manuscript; finding the right agent/publisher; self-publishing effectively with ebooks, print-on-demand or traditional printing; developing sales, marketing and publicity savvy; producing a video book trailer and helping it go viral; building a following through social media; and more.

Together, Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry, have appeared everywhere from NPR's "Morning Edition" to The New York Times to USA Today. They have taught writers about publishing everywhere, from Stanford University to the Miami Book Fair, to the granddaddy of American bookstores, Strand Books in New York City. Their book, The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published, is the go-to book on the subject, and contains all the information you'll ever need, taking you through the entire process of conceiving, writing, selling, marketing and promoting your book. 3-day workshop

Building a Story: A Fiction WorkshopMeets daily: Wed., May 2 - Fri., May 4, 2 - 5 p.m.

For a short story or novel to work, it must have a strong, solid beginning. On the first day, we will look at your opening and discuss its strengths and weak-nesses, as well as how to improve it. You will rewrite with those suggestions in mind for the second day. With a polished opening, bring in what comes next on the final day. When you leave, you will have a polished beginning and what that will lead into. Five pages from your first chapter or opening scenes must be submitted by April 2 via e-mail to nicole.swift@mdc.edu. She is the author of eight other books, including one on the craft of writing, Creating Character Emotions.

3-day workshop

Writing Crime FictionMeets daily: Wed., May 2 - Fri., May 4, 2 - 5 p.m.

Character, setting, plot, theme and voice are the tools all writers use to create good and enduring fiction. Crime writers, in addition, must ask and answer high-stakes story questions: Why this death? Who else is in danger? What will "justice" mean in this situation? This workshop will discuss these points, focusing on examples from a variety of crime fiction. Participants will do in-class exercises designed to enable them to employ these tools in individual ways. Time will be allowed for discussion, ranging from issues of style to questions about publishing.

SJ Rozan, a life-long New Yorker, is the author of thirteen novels and three-dozen short stories. She's an Edgar, Shamus, Anthony, Nero and Macavity winner, as well as a recipient of the Japanese Maltese Falcon award. SJ has been guest of honor at a number of fan conventions, and in 2003, was an invited speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos. She's served on the boards of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime, and as president of Private Eye Writers of America. She leads writing workshops and lectures widely. Her latest book is Ghost Hero.

The Masked Poet: A Poetry Workshop Meets daily: Wed., May 2 - Sat., May 5, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

This workshop will tackle the persona poem and the dramatic monologue, and begins with directed readings of several master poets, seeking to understand their methods for inventing speaker and voice in a complexly-articulated, "believable" world. We will outline a sequence of poetic assignments, and then review poems from the workshop, considering them in light of our models.

Marilyn Nelson is the author or translator of fourteen books and five chapbooks. She has been a finalist for the National Book Award, the PEN Winship Award, the Lenore Marshall Prize and Los Angeles Times Book Award, and has won the 2001 Boston Globe/Hornbook Award, the Annisfield-Wolf Award and the Poets' Prize among others. Fortune's Bones was a Coretta Scott King Honor Book and won the Lion and the Unicorn Award for Excellence in North American Poetry. Other honors include a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship and a fellowship from the J.S. Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Master Workshop on Writing MemoirMeets daily: Wed., May 2 - Sat., May 5, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

This workshop will examine all elements of memoir writing in great detail, befitting a master class Chen teaches at NYU and Fairfield University. This course aims to teach writers how to build theme; develop pearl strings of scenes and storylines from memory; find voice and point of view; develop dialogue; define settings and establish narrative moments and suitable tone. Da Chen is a leading memoirist and literary novelist. He is the author of the New York Times bestselling memoirs, Colors of the Mountain and Sounds of the River, and the novel, Brothers. His books have been widely translated and are used as textbooks in Yale, Vassar, Wellesley, in the New York State University system, and in high schools and middle schools. Chen is the recipient of the NCSS 2010 Spirit of America Award and the 2007 Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature by the American Librarians Association.

Writing for Book Deals: From Pitch to Proposal Meets daily: Wed., May 2 - Sat., May 5, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Creative nonfiction focuses on the human desire to tell — and be told — compelling stories, but the form includes more than childhood memoir. This course will explore the flexibility and power of the creative nonfiction form, examining the ways in which writers combine the personal voice with journalistic observation to transform place, people, food, travel, and nature into gripping prose. We will employ in-class writing and exercises to explore various topics and try our hand at multiple forms.

Dinty W. Moore is author of The Mindful Writer: Noble Truths of the Writing Life, as well as the memoir Between Panic & Desire, winner of the Grub Street Nonfiction Book Prize in 2009. Moore has published essays and stories in The Southern Review, The Georgia Review, Harpers, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine, Gettysburg Review, Utne Reader, and Crazyhorse, among numerous other venues. He is a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship winner.

Taller sobre la ficción4 días: miércoles 2 al viernes 4 de mayo, 6 - 9 p.m.; sábado 5 de mayo, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. El taller se enfocará en ficción, especialmente en cuento corto. Previamente al taller, se les proporcionará a los participantes una lista de cuentos breves emblemáticos de la literatura hispanoamericana, que se discutirán en la primera clase. En las clases restantes cada estudiante deberá presentar un breve relato suyo, cuyo estilo y contenido serán comentados y discutidos de manera propositiva por los participantes y el profesor, tomando en cuenta aspectos narrativos tales como la presentación de los personajes, el desarrollo temático, el punto de vista del narrador y el ambiente de la historia.

Homero Aridjis es autor de 41 libros de poesía y prosa. Su obra ha sido traducida a 15 idiomas y reconocida con premios literarios en México, Italia, Francia, Serbia y los Estados Unidos. Fundador del Grupo de los Cien, su labor como ambientalista ha sido reconocido con el Global 500 del PNUMA, el John Hay Award de la Orion Society, y el Premio del Milenio Mikhail Gorbachev para Liderazgo Internacional en el Medio Ambiente. Ha sido profesor en las universidades de New York, Columbia y California. Su última novela es Los invisibles (2010).
