season outlook

Coming off a magical late-season run, the 2012 Manhattan men’s soccer team will look to challenge once again for the MaaC Championship.

“obviously we were very excited with the way the season finished last year,” said head Coach ashley hammond, who guided his squad to the MaaC Championship game in 2011. “We plan to win and the fact that we didn’t win many games prior to last fall was disappointing. that being said I think last year will help us this year.”

Fifteen players return from the squad that reached the conference title game for just the second time in program history. that veteran core will look to mold with nine new faces as the Jaspers look to prove 2011 was just the start of the team’s new success.

“each year we have upgraded our team on the field,” noted hammond. “the guys we have brought in this year give us another upgrade and there isn’t one that I wouldn’t put on the field for a game at this point.”

ForWarDsthe majority of scoring is back for the

Jaspers this season despite losing Deia nassar and trevor Chiduku to graduation. all-MaaC tournament team member eugene heerschap returns for his second year in riverdale and will be expected to pick up where he left off as a catalyst for the offense.

“eugene came back in great shape this year and is already banging in the goals in practice,” hammond said. “We’ve given him

some help this year with some upgrades to our striking core that will add in some striking power and ability.”

those additions include returning players tommy amos who notched four points in his freshman campaign, including a goal. naru Park and Isa Konneh look to increase the size in the forward group this year. Park, a 6’4” transfer, is originally from Japan and will have three years of eligibility in riverdale while the 6’1” Konneh comes to Manhattan after an impressive career at Bloomfield high school in new Jersey.

miDFielDone of the more veteran groups this fall

will be the midfield unit. Juniors Daniel Festa, Carlo giachino will be joined by second year players reese akers, Jake scavetta, rob tedesco, and andrew santos.

“Daniel and Carlo played very well for us in the latter parts of the season last year,” said hammond. “akers has been probably our best player this preseason and we’ve added some support for them.”

transfer Kevan lewis joins the Jaspers after two successful years at Monroe Community College. While there, lewis helped take the team to the nJCaa national tournament in both years, including a championship game appearance in 2011.

Joining lewis is a bevy of freshman including alex shackley, a las Vegas native, who owns the Palo Verde high school record for career goals, wins and playoff victories. Josh Binfield, alex recinos, and stefhan o’Connor will also compete for playing time in their rookie seasons.

DeFensealthough the back line returns a strong

number of players, the leadership of graduating senior Christopher holihan will be the biggest hole at the start of the 2012 season.

“I don’t think you can ever replace a guy like Chris, because he was a leader in so many ways,” hammond admitted. “that being said we are delighted with the way our returning players have come in this preseason.”

senior co-captain CJ Dragovich will be at the helm of that returning group along with juniors erik Montinard, sam howard, sean towey and stefano Carlacci.

“CJ has come back in great shape and looks fantastic, as does Montinard and howard,” notes hammond. “We’re excited about them and we’ve brought in some talented players that we believe can really help us.”

returns in goal for the Jaspers as co-captain george ellis begins his senior year with Manhattan. the Quinnipiac transfer was instrumental in the teams stretch run posting four shutouts, including two in the conference tournament.

Despite his late season success, ellis will still battle for playing time with junior Christopher lands. lands missed the majority of 2011 with a hand injury after just six games. however, the former MaaC all-rookie is back healthy and will be a factor in 2012.

“We have historically played two or three keepers in non-conference games in the three years that I’ve been here,” hammond said. “as the non-conference contests unfold we will make a decision as to who will be the number one. the great thing is that the two returners and our incoming keeper have struck a great chord with one another.”

scheDule non-conference matchups against foes

from the Big east, Pac-12 and atlantic 10 highlight the 2012 Manhattan College men’s soccer schedule, which was announced today. the 18-game slate features six home contests at gaelic Park, starting with the season opener against Villanova on aug. 24.

this marks the second straight season Manhattan is opening against Villanova. the Wildcats reached the semifinals of the Big east tournament last season.

after the season opener, the Jaspers are away from gaelic Park until oct. 12. Manhattan plays its next nine contests on the road, starting with the gonzaga nike Classic on aug. 31-sept. 2. In addition to a matchup with gonzaga (aug. 31), the Jaspers take on Pac-12 member oregon state (sept. 2) during their trip to the West Coast. Upon returning to new York, the Jaspers visit local rival Columbia on sept. 5.

Manhattan makes a brief return home for its annual alumni game on sept. 8 before resuming the regular season at temple three days later. the Jaspers visit st. Francis (nY) on sept. 21 and Bryant on sept. 23, then

head across town for the annual “Battle of the Bronx” against rival Fordham on sept. 28. the following weekend, Manhattan opens Metro atlantic athletic Conference (MaaC) play with games at Marist (oct. 5) and siena (oct. 7).

on oct. 12, the Jaspers play their first home game in seven weeks when Iona comes to gaelic Park. Manhattan posted a memorable 1-0 double-overtime victory over the gaels in the semifinals of last season’s MaaC tournament in orlando, Fla. the Jaspers then host Fairfield, the team they lost to in the 2011 MaaC Championship game, on oct. 14.

the Jaspers head back on the road for three of their next four, starting with a visit to saint Peter’s on oct. 20. after concluding

non-conference play with a home game against army on oct. 23, Manhattan makes its final road trip of the season for matchups with MaaC rivals rider (oct. 26) and loyola (oct. 28). the Jaspers then wrap up the regular season with a pair of games at gaelic Park. Manhattan hosts niagara on nov. 2 and ends the season against Canisius on nov. 4. last season, the Jaspers defeated both the Purple eagles and golden griffs in Buffalo for the first time since 2001.

the MaaC tournament will be held at loyola’s ridley athletic Complex on nov. 8-10. the tournament reverts to a four-team format this season after all 10 schools participated in 2011.

ashley hammond enters his third year as head men’s soccer coach at Manhattan College. the long-time new Jersey club coach was named the program’s seventh head coach in its 42 year history on December 17, 2009.

after sufferring through two rough seasons, hammond helped lead the Jaspers to one of the more impressive late season runs in 2011. after snapping a 43-match winless streak with a 1-0 victory at niagara on oct. 16, Manhattan went on a four match unbeaten streak including wins over Canisius and Marist.

the Jaspers would finish the 2011 regular season as the six seed in the Metro atlantic athletic Conference (MaaC) and advance to just their second championship game in program appearance. thrilling victories over loyola and Iona, in double overtime, propelled them into the title match where they ultimately fell 3-1 to top-seeded Fairfield.

hammond also has over 20-years of coaching experience prior to riverdale. he has worked with the Montclair (nJ) United soccer Club since 1987 and is in his 19th year serving as the Director of Coaching. In his time with Montclair United, hammond has guided several teams renowned for their high level of technical skills and stylish passing to state and national prominence.

hammond coaches the Montclair aristocats (U18 girls) and Montclair thunderbolts (U16 girls). Under his direction for the last 11 years, the aristocats advanced to the state Cup Finals seven of the last eight years, and won four new Jersey titles (2002, 2005, 2007, 2009). In 2005, he led the aristocats to the national Y league championship. the aristocats are currently ranked the #1 Under-18 team in new Jersey, #2 in region I amongst teams in the northeast Usa and #5 nationally. hammond achieved similar success with

the thunderbolts since he stepped to the helm in 2004. the thunderbolts advanced to back-to-back state Cup Finals (2007 & 2008), and then won the state Cup Championship in 2009. the thunderbolts are currently ranked #14 in the United states, #3 in region I and are the top team in new Jersey.

at the high school level, hammond served as the Montclair Kimberley academy boys coach from 1996-2000. he was named new Jersey star ledger Coach of the Year in 2000 after guiding the team to its second straight Colonial hills Conference title and the County Championship. In 1999 Montclair Kimberley academy won the 1999 Prep school state Cup.

hammond is the co-owner and director of sports Domain academy which trains boys and girls, men and women under 18 in Montclair, n.J. hammond has training experience and has conducted clinics on the international level with clubs such as with norwich City FC (england), Colchester United FC (england), Queensland state team (australia), olympiakos FC (greece), shorobe FC (africa) and sagamihara school (Japan). he has donated an annual soccer-training program in Maun & Kasane, Botswana (africa) for the last eight years. In the United states, hammond has previously worked with the new Jersey state olympic Development Program (oDP) and the national Y league training Camp in Florida.

hammond graduated from Montclair state University in 1994 earning a bachelors degree in physical education and coaching. he co-authored goal!: the Ultimate guide for soccer Parents (1999) with gloria averbuch whose daughter, Yael, is a player on the United states Women’s national soccer team.

Jorden scottJorden scott enters his third year as an assistant coach on the

Manhattan men’s soccer staff. scott brings over 10 years of coaching and playing experience to riverdale. he recently received his nsCaa advanced national Diploma.

scott has served as the academy Director at sports Domain academy in Montclair, n.J. for the past four years, and he has coached within the organization since 2003. In this role, he trains players 18 years and under across the tri-state region. During his tenure at sports Domain academy, several of scott’s teams have earned state and national recognition. he coaches the Montclair gauchos (U16 boys) who last season reached the U.s. Youth national Championships in Phoenix, after winning the new Jersey state Cup and capturing the region 1 title with a dramatic 4-3 overtime win against olney Maryland.

From 2004-2008, scott worked as the Football for life Program Director in Maun & Kasane, Botswana (africa) training over 300 children ages 7 to 15 living in poverty.

In the United Kingdom, scott was the head coach of the University of glamorgan (1st team) from 2001-03 which competed at an elite level within British University sport. he also spent two years as the head coach of the men’s and women’s national teams at the University of Wales athletic Union.

scott played five years (1993-97) as a youth professional with ayr United FC in scotland. at the collegiate level, he was the team captain of the first team at University of glamorgan and for Wales Universities.

scott earned his bachelor’s degree in sports psychology from the University of glamorgan in 2002. he is working toward a master’s degree in physical and special education at Montclair state University. scott holds a UeFa B coaching license.

steve Jonessteve Jones enters his first season as part of the Jaspers coaching

staff. he will work mainly with the Manhattan goalkeepers.Jones graduated for liverpool John Moors University in 2000 and

was the coach of the schools women’s soccer team. During his time there he helped to elevate the program to one of the highest levels of British University sport.

after coming to america in 2003, he spent two years as a youth soccer coach in new Jersey before taking over at the Director of Coaching for a travel soccer organization in san Francisco. In this role he was responsible for managing the trainers and setting up coaching and training cirriculums.

In 2006 he returned to the east Coast, accepting a position with the new York red Bulls of Major league soccer (Mls). In that span he has elevated himself into a managerial role with the organization’s training Programs department. For the 2010 season he was named the goalkeeper coach for the red Bulls academy, even working with the franchise’s First team keepers in arizona last year.

With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro atlantic athletic Conference is in its 31st year of competition during the 2011-2012 academic year.

the MaaC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.s. Military academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. on January 2, 1982, army traveled to Iona for the first MaaC men’s basketball game and the MaaC story had begun.

today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, loyola University Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, niagara University, rider University, saint Peter’s College, and siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. st. Francis (n.Y.) College, Villanova University, VMI and Wagner College are all associate members of the MaaC Women’s Water Polo league. Drake University, robert Morris University and sacred heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at albany, Boston University and the University of hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. the MaaC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2011-2012 academic year.

the MaaC Basketball Championships move to springfield’s MassMutual Center to host the 2012-2014 championships. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MaaC has been able to attract a number of nCaa Championship events. Most recently, the MaaC and rider co-hosted the 2011 nCaa Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. the MaaC, Canisius College and niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 nCaa Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and second rounds at the hsBC arena in Buffalo, new York. all three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. the MaaC and rider University co-hosted the 2009 nCaa Division I Women’s Basketball Championship regional at the sovereign Bank arena in trenton, n.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and second rounds in 2006. the MaaC and rider will work together to co-host the 2012 nCaa rowing Championships at Mercer lake in West Windsor, new Jersey.

athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MaaC Men’s and Women’s lacrosse leagues. the men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. the men’s league consists of four MaaC schools -- Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and siena – and three associate members – Detroit, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. the women’s league consists of MaaC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, niagara and siena.

In 2002, the MaaC added the MaaC Women’s Water Polo league. the league is currently made up of three MaaC schools – Iona, Marist and siena – as well as four associate members, st. Francis (n.Y.), Villanova, VMI and Wagner.

sacred heart started participating in MaaC Women’s rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MaaC Championship, while robert Morris began competition in the spring of 2011.

In the summer of 2009, the MaaC added three associate members – albany, Boston University and hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MaaC members Fairfield, niagara and siena in 2009-2010.

acaDemics anD athletics

the MaaC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the nCaa Woman of the Year award. In the fall of 1998, erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 rhodes scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a loyola student, was also awarded a rhodes scholarship in 1999.

First-class facilities are the rule with MaaC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas,

such as Madison square garden, the IZoD Center, hsBC arena, times Union Center, the arena at harbor Yard and the sun national Bank Center. the other MaaC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the reverend harold ridley, s.J., athletic Complex at loyola, where the women’s soccer championship will be contested in the fall of 2011, and Joe Bruno stadium in troy, new York, home of the 2012 MaaC Baseball Championship. this year, the MaaC will take its men’s championship to orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the esPn Wide World of sports Complex. the MaaC Men’s and Women’s golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia golf Course.

In the past several years, a number of the MaaC schools have also enjoyed success in nCaa Championships. MaaC schools have made a total of 77 nIt appearances and 47 nCaa appearances. In addition, Iona and rider participated in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason tournament, with the gaels advancing to the championship game. the Manhattan women participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational, reaching the semifinal round of the tournament. the MaaC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to nCaa Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the sweet 16 before falling to the eventual national Champion, the University of tennessee. In the fall of 2009, the no. 11 Iona men’s cross country team finished tied for eighth place at the nCaa Championship race, extended the gaels’ streak to eight straight top 10 national finishes. Iona softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan baseball and loyola lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage.

the MaaC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumptV, Inc., now neulion, Inc., to design the MaaC web page. MaaCsports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, live and on-demand video and an online merchandise store. the MaaC, in conjunction with neulion, launched an iPhone app in February 2011. the league is looking to expand its offerings with android and iPod apps, scheduled for release during the 2011-12 academic year.

the MaaC President for the 2011-2012 academic year is rev. Jeffrey von arx, s.J., the President of Fairfield University. the Vice-President is Dr. eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of saint Peter’s College. Jim Paquette, Director of athletics at loyola University Maryland, will chair the Committee on athletic administration, and theresa Berg, associate athletic Director/senior Woman administrator at niagara University will serve as Vice Chair.

Dr. Brennan o’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhat-tan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009.

Dr. o’Donnell comes to Manhattan from Fordham Col-lege at rose hill, Fordham University’s oldest and larg-est school. as dean of Fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of arts and sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200.

Before coming to new York, Dr. o’Donnell spent 17 years at loyola College in Maryland (now loyola University Mary-land), where he served as a professor of english and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide honors Pro-gram. an active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contem-porary american Catholic writers. he has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited the Work of andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of religion and the arts. In addition, Dr. o’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. at Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and loyola, as professor of english.

as the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian schools, Dr. o’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. he has experi-ence in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at rose hill.

his publications and lectures demonstrate a keen engage-ment in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit higher education, and he was a member of the national seminar on Jesuit higher education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participa-tion in the mission of Catholic higher education.

a native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. o’Donnell earned his B.a. with highest distinction and honors in english at the Pennsylvania state University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. he earned an M.a. and a Ph.D. at the University of north Carolina at Chapel hill in english and american literature and language. he is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors.

Dr. o’Donnell is married to angela o’Donnell (formerly alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and ann Cur-ran Center for american Catholic studies. the couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the st. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia Univer-sity, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in leuven, Belgium), and Will (a senior english major at Fordham).


a 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, Byrnes en-ters his 25th year as director of athletics.

since his arrival back to riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight nCaa tournament bids (four women, four men). additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason national Invitational tournaments (nIt). Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basket-ball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 27 student-athletes have received all-america honors for both athletic and academic achievements.

Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation.

a native of garrison, new York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. he also holds an M.B.a. from City University in seattle, Washington.

as an undergraduate, Byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club football team. Byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and offensive

end. he spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969.

Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace high school in north arlington, new Jersey. he also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tourna-ment appearances in baseball and basketball, while also capturing the Parochial “B” state Championship in football (1972).

In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, By-rnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball associa-tion, at one time the sponsoring body of the nIt. he also served on the nCaa Championship Committee in 1999-2000. he is currently the chair of the Metro atlantic athletic Conference (MaaC) Men’s Basketball Committee and the Committee on athletic admin-istration, as well as a member of the eCaC officials negotiating Committee. In recognition of his years of outstanding contributions to Jasper athletics, Byrnes was inducted into the Manhattan College athletic hall of Fame in 2004.

Byrnes resides in Croton-on-hudson, new York, along with his wife, rosemary. he is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan ’97), Brian (Man-hattan ’99), Darren and Brigid.

Doug straley was promoted to assistant athletic Director for sports Medicine in august 2009, after serving as Manhattan’s Director of sports Medicine for the previous six years. straley supervises the athletic training of the 300+ student-athletes who compete for Manhattan’s 19 Division I athletic teams.

Prior to his arrival in riverdale, straley served as the director of sports medicine at Manhattanville College in nearby Purchase, nY. at Manhattanville, he coordinated the rehabilitation, prevention, and management of athletic injuries for over 250 intercollegiate nCaa Division III student-athletes.

Before his tenure at Manhattanville, straley worked for three years as the assistant director of sports medicine at assumption College. he assisted with the medical care of the athletic program’s 19 Division II varsity sport teams.

straley, a 1998 graduate of northeastern University, worked as a student athletic trainer during his undergraduate years. In 1999, he received a master of science degree in athletic training from University of tennessee at Chattanooga.

additionally, straley served as the head athletic trainer for the Westchester Wildfire, a United states Basketball league (UsBl) team coached by former new York Knick John starks.

straley had been published on numerous occasions, and has made several presentations based upon his research in the field of athletic training.

straley holds athletic training licenses in new York, Massachusetts, and georgia, and is a member of the national athletic trainers association and the national strength and Conditioning association. he is certified as a strength and Conditioning specialist, as an athletic trainer, and in CPr and First aid. a decorated eagle scout, straley won the Koko Kassabian award while at northeastern for outstanding achievement in leadership, scholarship, and professional development.

a native of newton, Mass., straley currently resides in Dobbs Ferry, nY with his wife Jennifer and their daughter annabelle.
