Somersett...it’s Great to be Home!Whether you are a resident or just live nearby, Somersett has so much to offer the entire Reno community!

Note from the Club...Congratulations to Somersett’s 2012 Odyssey Teams!

This year was by far the most challenging year for the teams! Despite battling 95 degree heat in some of the most difficult

uphill runs and injuries; the team came together to support one another and conquered many goals. The true journey of the Odyssey was on the last legs—high temperatures, injuries that took runners out of the race, and both teams picking up extra miles just to get to the finish line. Complete exhaustion set in, and there were moments where we wanted to give up; however, the realization that the pain is temporary and finishing is only miles away took over! The men came in before the women for the second year in a row, averaging an 8:34 mile & finishing in 25 hours. Overall they came in 16th place out of 45 teams. The women hung in there until the end, averaging a 9:12 mile and finishing in 27 hours. Overall, the women came in 9th place out of 27 teams. Thank you to everyone who made these RTO experiences another memorable race!

FoxtailsFoxtails are a type of sticker prevalent in the spring and summer

season. Foxtails range from ½” to 3” in length, and are very sharp at one end that branching into wispy tails at the other.

Foxtails have the ability to burrow under the skin and migrate to different areas of the body. Foxtails commonly invade the pet’s ears causing discomfort and shaking or tilting of the head. Foxtails can penetrate the skin of the feet causing painful abscesses to form. When a foxtail enters the nose, severe sneezing can occur, often accompanied by a bloody discharge. Basic precautions include checking your pet’s feet, ears and hair after outdoor activities. When foxtails are suspected, your pet’s veterinarian may need to use anesthetics and special surgical instruments to remove them. This summer, be sure to watch for any swelling, drainage, limping, violent sneezing or head shaking which may be an indication of foxtail intrusions.

Westergard FundraiserSomersett’s local elementary school, Westergard Elementary, is working toward a fall fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $50,000 for technology, the rehabilitation of recreational areas and to promote health and fitness. We have raised our first $8,000, which will assist in outfitting all classrooms with interactive white boards and rehabilitating our field—work that is already underway!

The next $12,000 raised will fund the repair, resealing and striping of all play yards. Our goal is to complete this work in early August, before the start of the 2012–2013 school year.

The Somersett HOA has generously agreed to donate all green fees from the Canyon Nine on July 17, 18 and 19 days to support the school. Please bring your friends and come out to play for a great cause!

sierra canyonSpring has zoomed by and we’re well into summer now. Enjoy it while we have it, because

winter always seems so much longer! We’re doing our part to keep the community looking good. But the same issues

continue to plague us as they do HOAs across the nation—weeds, garbage cans, satellite dishes, off-leash pets and pet waste, common area landscaping, garage doors, older homes needing painting, yard objects, metal chicken wire and green mesh on split rail fences, flags, vehicles parked on streets, irrigating too long and even on the wrong days, speeding and running stop signs, exterior home and lot improvements. Yes, there are rules (even common sense) for all of these, but ask yourself, “Isn’t this why I moved into an HOA in the first place?”

As your executive director, I stay busy with practically everything but violations and assessment matters. These are handled by the community manager, Kris Lindberg, and her assistant, Mandy Scarff. They prefer to be reached via email ([email protected]), but they can also be reached at 626-7333. When they aren’t at the office, they can be seen on their twice-monthly Sierra Canyon drive-through.

Ronda Flanagan, our Activities/Administration Coordinator, also does a great job and what would we do without our eagled-eyed Association Lodge staff members? We rely on them to enforce the Association’s Rules and Regulations at our beautiful Lodge.

Let’s all work together to follow the rules. In the meantime, enjoy the good summer weather!
