Rev. MaRk S. BaRnett

Rev. Mark S. Barnett, 50, of Midwest City, Okla., died Nov. 9, 2011. He was senior pastor of Wickline United Methodist Church at the time of his death.

Mark was born Jan. 20, 1961, in El Paso, Texas, to Beverly and the late Rev. Marcus Barnett. He earned a bachelor’s in education/vocal performance at East Central University and his divinity degree from Phillips Theological Seminary. He was a member of the National Phi Kappa Tau and National Sigma Theta Epsilon Christian Men’s fraternities.

He and Linda Dicus married on June 2, 1990.Rev. Barnett began his ministry career in 1989 as youth minister at Perry UMC. He then

was appointed as the first campus ministry director at Oklahoma City University, where he served for five years. He pastored Hinton UMC for eight years, before his appointment to Wickline. He was ordained in 1993.

Among his Church leadership, Barnett was an Oklahoma Conference clergy mentor; OKC-North District Board of Ministry member; and Camps dean, counselor, and curriculum writer. He led many mission teams.

In the Midwest City/Del City community, he was a motivational speaker and led community prayer services. He was a member of the Tinker/Mid-Del Family YMCA Board of Directors, chaired the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, and was honored as YMCA Volunteer of the Year 2007-08. He also was honored as Volunteer of the Year for the Midwest City Chamber of Commerce in 2006.

Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Linda; daughters Taylor and Brenden; and honorary son Joe Nett.

His life was celebrated Nov. 12 at Wickline UMC.

Rev. Dwight DaRRah

Rev. Dr. Dwight D. Darrah, 84, of Bartlesville, Okla., died March 26, 2012. His ministry career extended more than half a century.

Dwight was born in Oklahoma City on March 31, 1927, and grew up in Clinton. He attended the University of Oklahoma, and graduated from Oklahoma City University and Boston University. He served in the U.S. Army. OCU recognized him with a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1982.

On Aug. 15, 1951, in Okeene, he married Carolina “Becky” Beckloff. She predeceased him in 2011.

His first appointment was in 1947. He was ordained in 1955. He served twice as a district superintendent, leading the former Altus and Ada Districts. He was pastor at El Reno-Ellison Avenue, Laverne, Hinton, Harrison Memorial and Lake Churches in Tulsa, Kingfisher, OKC-Mayfair Heights, Tulsa-St. Paul’s, Muskogee-St. Paul, and Bartlesville-East Cross.

In the 1970s, he was the superintendent of the Oklahoma United Methodist Children’s Home in Tahlequah and the Frances E. Willard Home for Girls in Tulsa.

He had been pastor emeritus at East Cross since his retirement in 1992. He also worked then as a literacy tutor, minister of pastoral care, and law firm clerk. He was an avid reader.

Survivors include three children, David and Mark Darrah and Linda Darrah Reynolds, and two grandsons.

Memorial service was held March 31 at Boston Avenue Church, Tulsa, officiated by

Revs. Charles Stewart of Altus and Eva Marie Campbell of Tulsa. Arrangements were by Stanley’s Funeral Home, Tulsa.

Rev. haRDie Mack higginS

Rev. Hardie Mack Higgins, age 67, of Cedar Hill, Texas, died Jan. 23, 2012.Hardie was born Sept. 8, 1944, in Blackwell, Okla., to Jack and Lenore Higgins. As a

young enlisted soldier, he served two deployments in Vietnam. Two decades later, he became a U.S. Army chaplain.

He attended Northern Oklahoma College and graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma University in 1982. In 1983 he earned a divinity degree from Phillips seminary, and he was ordained a United Methodist elder in 1985.

Rev. Higgins pastored at Jefferson, Renfrow, and Copan churches in Oklahoma between 1978 and 1984.

He became an active-duty chaplain in 1984. Before retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 2005, his chaplaincy included service in Kuwait during Desert Storm and in Iraq. He also served in Germany, Korea, and Guantanamo. He received the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, four Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, and other awards.

In 2006 he earned a doctorate from Grace Theological Seminary. At the time of his death, he was studying Global Leadership in a doctoral program at Dallas Baptist University.

Survivors include his wife, Younghee Higgins; son Christopher Higgins; daughter Leslie Sykes; and a grandson.

Service was Jan. 27 at Blackwell UMC, officiated by Revs. James Hollifield and Pam Cottrill. Burial, with military honors, was at Blackwell Cemetery. Directing was Roberts and Son Funeral Home.

Rev. haRolD honnolD

Rev. Harold A. Honnold, age 93, of Enid, Okla., died Jan. 17, 2012.Harold was born July 14, 1918, in Sand Springs, Okla., to Wilbur and Lula Jane (Lewis)

Honnold. He received a bachelor’s degree from Phillips University, Enid, and obtained a divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas.

He married Fay Shelton on July 16, 1944, in Dallas.He was ordained in 1945. He served as a pastor for more than 41 years, retiring in 1985.

Churches he served were Harrah, Kaw City, Hunter, Newkirk, Ryan, Carter Avenue in Ardmore, Geary, Chelsea, Atoka, Hagler Memorial in Tulsa, Wynnewood, Wetumka, OKC-Otterbein, OKC-St. Paul’s, Rose Hill in Tulsa, Jones, Okeene, and Waukomis. After retiring to Enid, he continued to pastor at churches in that area. He performed weddings and funerals until July 2011.

Survivors include daughter Mary Fay McCumber, two grandsons, and a great-granddaughter. His wife predeceased him.

Graveside service was Jan. 20 at Waukomis Cemetery, with Rev. Larry McCumber officiating, under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

Rev. kenneth howaRD

Rev. Kenneth Weldon Howard, 82, of Cathedral City, Calif., died July 30, 2011.He was born on April 20, 1929, on his grandfather’s ranch near Spanish Fort, Texas, to Robert

and Ada Howard. He was age 2 when his family moved to Waurika, Okla. A graduate of Southern Methodist University and Duke Divinity School, he did post-

graduate study at Cambridge University, England, and Melbourne University, Australia. His ministry career extended from 1951 to 1991, mostly in Oklahoma and also South Carolina.

He was ordained in 1955. He was director of United Methodist Cooperative Ministries (now Restore Hope Ministries) in Tulsa for more than eight years. Also in Oklahoma, he served Lambuth and Penn Avenue churches in Oklahoma City; Grove; Harrah; Stroud; Vinita/Big Cabin; and in Tulsa: Memorial Drive, Harvard Avenue, and at Boston Avenue, where he was an associate pastor.

He was a member of the Oklahoma Conference boards for Ordained Ministry, Church & Society, and Frances Willard Home.

Loving to travel, he had visited 92 countries and gone around the world twice. He conducted preaching missions in Brazil and Malaysia, led Holy Land tours, and taught English in China with Global Volunteers.

He retired to Palm Springs, Calif., in 1995. He was a founding member of the Stonewall Democrats, FrontRunners, Metropolitan Community Church, and Sunday Night Live of Palm Springs United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his partner, Bill Gray; his children, Mark, Kevin, and Meredith Howard and Shannon Howard-Bravo; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and Elizabeth Howard, to whom he was married for 33 years.

Memorial service was Sept. 17 at Tulsa-Boston Avenue UMC, officiated by Rev. Bill Crowell, with interment at the church’s columbarium.

Rev. DenniS caRlton JoneS Rev. Dennis Carlton Jones, 65, of Skiatook, Okla., died Sept. 27, 2011. Dennis was born March 28, 1946, in Oklahoma City, to Henry and Lucile (Minton) Jones. He

was a graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma and Phillips Theological Seminary. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Vietnam War.

Dennis Jones married Cherlyn Hannaford on June 10, 1967.He began his ministry in 1979 and was the founding pastor of Claremore-St. Andrew’s. He

was ordained in 1983. He also served at Ochelata, Kremlin, Davis, Mount Zion near El Reno, Sentinel/Rocky, Lawton Heights, and Yale/Maramec. He was assigned to Honorable Location in 2002 and to Honorable Location Retired in 2008.

Survivors include his wife, daughters Rachael Jones and Christina Bertwell, and four grandchildren.

Service was Oct. 1 at Skiatook-First UMC, officiated by Rev. Norm Wasson, with burial at Osage Garden Cemetery, directed by Peters-Stumpff Funeral Home.

Rev. weSley RoBeRt kiMBall

Rev. Wesley Robert Kimball, age 86, of Sherman, Texas, died Dec. 25, 2011. At the time of his death, he was serving his seventh year as pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church in Hugo.

Wes was born March 31, 1925, in Fairview, Okla., to William and Anna (Price) Kimball. He grew up on his family’s homestead south of Seiling.

He married Shirley I. Reed on Dec. 5, 1964.

He held degrees from Phillips University at Enid, Miami (Ohio) University, and United Theological Seminary, and did further graduate study at five other schools, including Perkins School of Theology.

Rev. Kimball received his license to preach in 1948, was ordained as a deacon in 1955, as an elder in 1977, and officially retired in 1987. He also served in the West Ohio and North Texas Conferences. In Oklahoma he also pastored at Marshall, Yewed/Prairie Valley, Sulphur-St. Paul, Gene Autry, Martha, Lawton-Sullivan Village, and Quinton. He also spoke and led revivals in those three states as well as in Louisiana, West Virginia, and Alaska.

His military service also was extensive, with commissions in both the Army and Air Force. He enlisted in 1943 and served during World War II and the Korean War. After 33 years with the military, including work as an auxiliary chaplain, he retired as an Air Force lieutenant colonel in 1981. He also served 30 years in the Air Force Civil Service.

He held a number of civilian and military honors, including three humanitarian awards from the Greater Hugo Area Chamber of Commerce. He established Sharing Hope in Hugo Inc. and had been president of the Hugo Ministerial Alliance and administrator of its Benevolence Fund.

At the time of his death, he also was president of Kimball Construction Co. and president/board chairman of Kimball Land & Cattle Co.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years; daughter Anna Allen; sons John, Edward, William, and David Kimball; eight grandchildren and one stepgranddaughter, nine great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Service was Dec. 28 at Wesley UMC, Hugo. Burial with full military honors was at Fort Sill National Cemetery. Directing was Miller & Miller Funeral Home, Hugo.

Rev. lawSon geRalD lee

Rev. Lawson Gerald Lee, age 93, of Enid, Okla., died Nov. 23, 2011. His ministry career stretched from Oklahoma and Louisiana to Peru and Uruguay.

He was born May 9, 1918, in Homestead, Okla., to George and Cecille (Smith) Lee. He was valedictorian of both grade school and high school at Homestead, and excelled in athletics. At age 15, he made and played his own violin. He later built electric organs for three churches.

He attended NWU, SMU, and USC. Rev. Lee was ordained in 1945.In Oklahoma, Rev. Lee served at Keyes, Mutual, Enid-Grand Avenue, Catoosa, Lawton-St.

Paul’s, and Cleo Springs, officially retiring in 1983. He also ministered at Arnett and Kremlin. In Louisiana, he pastored churches in New Orleans and Logansport.

In Lima, Peru, he was the national director for Church World Service. He helped guide rebuilding after a 1970 earthquake in that country. In Uruguay, he served 21 years, establishing and building churches; his assignments included district superintendent as well as executive secretary/national head of the Methodist Church of Uruguay.

In Enid, he managed Root Real Estate-Century 21. His skills included carpentry; he built his house and others. Among his hobbies were photo restoration, writing and making books, painting, and collecting stamps.

Survivors include his wife, Elsa E. Martinez, and his daughter, Susana Rivera.Service was Nov. 28 at Enid Cemetery Chapel, officiated by Rev. Grayson Lucky, with

arrangements by Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

In 2011, both Rev. Robert Leonard Majors and his wife, Lawanda, joined the Church Eternal. Their marriage spanned 60 years. They met while attending Oklahoma City University and married on Sept. 2, 1951.

Robert was born Dec. 27, 1928, and died at age 82 on Dec. 9, 2011, in Oklahoma City. His parents were Louie and Gladys Majors.

His clergy career included service as McAlester District superintendent.He first pastored at Wanette/Trousdale in 1950. He was ordained in 1955. He also served

Moore-First, OKC-Wickline, Chickasha-Epworth, Sapulpa-First, Tahlequah, Watonga, OKC-Second, Marietta, Blair, Grant/Fort Towson, and Jones. He officially retired in 1997.

Only days before his death, he was participating in church life at Moore-First and Moore-New Life.

Lawanda was born April 18, 1927, in Altus and died at age 84 on Oct. 25, 2011, in Oklahoma City. Her parents were Ben and Vaud Brown. In college, she was a double major, in vocal music and secretarial science. She directed choirs in churches where her husband pastored, and she was an acclaimed soloist. She worked as a secretary at Perkins School of Theology and a number of churches.

Survivors include their son, Robleigh Majors, and a grandson.Service for Mrs. Majors was Oct. 31, and for Rev. Majors, Dec. 14. Both funerals were at

Moore-First UMC, with burial at Altus. Arrangements were by John M. Ireland Funeral Home & Chapel, Moore.

Rev. Jene MilleR

Rev. Dr. Walter Jene Miller, 86, of Arnett, Okla., died May 17, 2011.Jene was one of twin sons born to Raymond and Nono Miller on Oct. 25, 1924, in Hollis,

Okla. He knew from an early age that he was bound for the ministry. At 18, he enlisted in

the Army. Because he was licensed to preach, played piano, and typed, he qualified as a chaplain’s assistant. During World War II, he served that role in Europe, including in the Normandy Invasion.

He met Gloria F. Swanson through the Wesley Foundation while studying at the University of Oklahoma, preaching at Washington UMC, and serving as youth director at Purcell. They married in 1948.

He earned a B.A. in English at OU and master’s degrees at East Texas State University and Southern Methodist University. His doctoral work was done at National Christian University of Missouri.

In 1951, he began his ministry career in the North Texas Conference. His first Oklahoma appointment was in 1954 at Bartlesville and Barnsdall, and he was ordained as an elder that year. He also served East Cross and Limestone churches in Bartlesville, OKC-Britton, Blackwell, OKC-Linwood, Edmond-First, Altus-Grace, Snyder/Mountain Park, and Kingston. After retirement, he was pastor at Arnett, 1994-2007.

Miller also was a campus minister at OU, and he directed Skyline Urban Ministry and TEEM (The Education & Employment Ministry) in Oklahoma City.

He advocated against prejudice and was active in the U.S. civil rights movement. He was one of the creators of the “Gridiron” show at the Annual Conference. Shortly before his death, he delivered the baccalaureate address at Arnett High School.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, daughters Nona Clifton and Karen Miller Ballard, and two grandsons.

Service was June 2 at the Arnett High School Auditorium. Graveside service was at Hollis. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Arnett.

Rev. MaRy lou BRanScuM MilliS

Rev. Mary Lou Branscum Millis, 79, of Muskogee, Okla., died Sept. 2, 2011. She was the first female elder ordained in the Oklahoma Conference.

Mary Lou was born Aug. 22, 1932, in Vian, Okla., to H.W. and Hattie (Moss) Branscum. She graduated from Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. She was ordained as a deacon in 1966 and as an elder in 1969. She served churches between 1967 and 1975, when she was assigned to Honorable Location.

In a 2006 newspaper interview, she said a friend had urged her to consider a career in the Church rather than work as an educator. She recalled that her father worried she might not be accepted as a clergy member, and “my mother was kind of proud of it.”

Her first appointment was to Fletcher. She also served at Tulsa-Trinity, Okmulgee-Butler Memorial, and Bartlesville-First.

When Rev. Branscum married Lawrence Millis, a Muskogee optometrist, in the 1970s, she became a full-time homemaker. He predeceased her.

Survivors include her sister Peggy Rosenberg; nephews Jack, Richard, and Alan Rosenberg; and niece Terri Gogel.

Private service was held Sept. 3 at Garden of Memories in Vian.

Rev. chaRleS holt RichaRDSon

Rev. Charles Holt Richardson, age 82, of Tulsa, Okla., died Dec. 7, 2011. Charles was born Nov. 4, 1929, in Ray City, Okla., to Holt and Ida Mae (Teague)

Richardson. He graduated from Coffee Junior College in 1949, Southern Methodist University in 1951, and Duke Divinity School in 1954. He received an honorary doctorate from Oklahoma City University.

He was ordained as an elder in 1955. His ministry career included service as superintendent of the Oklahoma City South District and as executive director at Oklahoma Methodist Manor in Tulsa.

He served appointments at OKC-Grace, Durant, Tulsa-Boston Avenue, Mangum, Sulphur, Mooreland, and Norman-Goodrich. He was an associate at Asbury in Tulsa when he retired in 1997.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Anna Arnold Richardson; children Beth, Charlie, and Thomas, and three grandchildren; stepchildren Trish Deal and Amy Caudle, and five stepgrandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret Wilson Richardson and a stepson, Mike Barnes.

Memorial service was Dec. 9 at Tulsa-Asbury UMC.

Rev. Roy Rowlan

Rev. Roy C. Rowlan, age 96, of Canute, Okla., died Nov. 27, 2011. He served almost a half-century as a pastor.

Roy was born Dec. 2, 1914, on the family farm near Canute, to Orvel and Iva (Kimmel) Rowlan. He married Ella Jane Bogle on July 18, 1937.

At Canute High School, he was valedictorian of the Class of 1932, and he was licensed to preach that same year. A 1938 graduate of Oklahoma City University, he was later honored as a Distinguished Alumnus. In 1941, he earned his master’s at Southern Methodist University

348 Memoirsand began preaching at Butler. He was ordained in 1943.

He also pastored at Wheatland, Chickasha, Temple, Carnegie, Shattuck, Purcell, Cherokee, OKC-Penn Avenue, Heavener/Hodgen, Enid Central, Hobart/Roosevelt, Watonga, and Lindsay/Criner.

Rev. Rowlan is credited with building churches at Pocasset and Ninnekah and dedicating them debt-free. For 20 years, he chaired the Investment Finance Committee of the Methodist Retirement & Healthcare Center in Clinton. He served in the Elk City Ministerial Alliance and was a youth director for Lawton, Clinton, and Woodward Districts.

The couple retired to his family’s farm in 1980. At age 90, he traveled to Russia.His community leadership was extensive. He established the United Fund in four towns.

He was inducted into the Western Oklahoma Hall of Fame. He was president of the Western Oklahoma Historical Society and of Help Inc. He was a board member for Beckham County Rural Water District No. 3. He was a Rotarian and Salvation Army leader, among other civic activities.

Survivors include daughters Barbara Owen and Donna Rowlan, three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife and a son, William.

Service was Dec. 2 at Elk City-First United Methodist Church, where he was active in retirement. Burial was at Fairlawn Cemetery. Arrangements were by Martin Funeral Home, Elk City.

Rev. Dale Sullivan

Rev. Dale Sullivan, 81, of Durant, Okla., died June 26, 2011. He was born Dec. 18, 1929, in Clayton, Okla., to Elmer and Jessie (Steele) Sullivan. Dale and Joyce married in 1973, and again in 1994 in Hugo.

He received his license to preach in 1994. A Local Pastor, he served at Hugo-Wesley UMC and Tuskahoma, continuing several years beyond his official retirement in 2006.

At the time of his death, the Sullivans were attending Calera UMC.He was a ham radio operator and enjoyed photography.Survivors include his wife, Joyce Sullivan; daughters Sherry Saunders, Tamara

Rubenstein, Rene Harper, and Michelle Owens; sons Randy and Michael Sullivan; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Service was July 1 at Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home Chapel, Durant, with Rev. Charles King officiating. Graveside service at Highland Cemetery was private.

Rev. JiM tayloR

Rev. Dr. James Carroll Taylor Jr., 77, of Oklahoma City, died June 20, 2011. His widow is Rev. Helen Taylor, retired elder.

Jim was born Jan. 22, 1934, in Sentinel, Okla. He and Helen married on Dec. 16, 1954. He earned a B.A. from Oklahoma City University, a master’s and Ph.D. from Yale, and a divinity degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1985.

His ministry began in 1955 at Choctaw, and he retired in 1999. He taught in the Department of Religion at Oklahoma City University for 14 years and at Phillips seminary in Enid for eight years. His field was Old Testament study. Churches he served include Tulsa-Sheridan Avenue, OKC-Crown Heights, OKC-Aldersgate, Jefferson/Renfrow, Choctaw, and OKC-Billy Hooten.

He had been an elected delegate to the South Central Jurisdictional Conference. Since retirement in 1999, the Taylors were active at OKC-Leland Clegg UMC.He also is survived by daughter Janet Yeracaris, son Peter Mercer-Taylor, and five

grandchildren.Graveside service was June 21 at Port Cemetery near Sentinel, and Rev. Taylor was

buried in a wooden casket that he crafted. Two memorial services were held: July 29 at First UMC in Sentinel, and July 30 at OCU’s Angie Smith Chapel. Officiants were Revs. Kathy Leithner and Andrew Tevington. Arrangements were by Musick Varner Funeral Home, Sentinel.

PeaRl holDeRReaD Boyce

Pearlie Lee Holderread Boyce, age 106, of North Manchester, Ind., died Dec. 11, 2011. She was the widow of Rev. Wallace L. Boyce, who died in 1954. Pearl was born Feb. 24, 1905, near Cushing, in Indian Territory, to Henry and Minnie Belle (Fillmore) Holderread. She earned a bachelor’s degree (home economics) at McPherson (Kansas) College in 1931. She worked for a year with the Santee tribe in Nebraska. She also taught elementary school for 10 years.

Pearl and Wallace married in 1934. Pearl was secretary for 13 years and minister of visitation for three years at Stillwater-

First United Methodist Church. Later she moved from Stillwater to live with son Paul Boyce of Wheaton, Ill. In 1995, she moved to a retirement community in North Manchester.

During her 80s and 90s, Pearl made a quilt every year. She sewed her own clothes until she was 94. She also sewed for residents of the retirement community.

Survivors include her son Paul, daughter Dona Boyce-Manoukian, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Service was to be at Timbercrest, the Church of the Brethren retirement center in North Manchester, with burial in Oklahoma. Officiating was the Timbercrest chaplain, Carol Pfeifer. Arrangements were by McKee Mortuary, North Manchester.

Sibyl Ann Edmondson, 85, of Tulsa, Okla., died Nov. 14, 2011. She was the wife of Rev.Justus Heber Edmondson, retired.

Sibyl was born Jan. 14, 1926, in Conway, Ark., to Byron and Coy (Hays) Thompson. She graduated from the University of Arkansas.

Rev. and Mrs. Edmondson were married for 63 years. She was a homemaker.She was a member of Tulsa-Boston Avenue UMC, the New Covenant Class, and United

Methodist Women. She had been an officer of Church Women United and was a member of the American Guild of Organists.

Survivors include her husband, daughters Carolyn Buso and Nancy Alston, a grandson, and two great-granddaughters. She was predeceased by a son, Mark.

Memorial service was Nov. 17 at Boston Avenue UMC, with family service at Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ninde Brookside, Tulsa.

Helen Lowe Eisenberg, 90, of Richmond Hill, Ga., died Aug. 29, 2011. She was the widow of Rev. John Lawrence “Larry” Eisenberg, who died in 1997.

Helen was born March 11, 1921, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Joseph and Stella Park. She earned a music education degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and did graduate work at Garrett Biblical Institute and the University of Virginia.

Larry and Helen married on Aug. 29, 1943. They collaborated throughout his ministry career, which stretched from 1943 to 1985,

and concluded in the Oklahoma Conference. They were United Methodist missionaries in Rhodesia, Africa, and Red Bird Mission, Kentucky. They moved to Oklahoma in 1973.

She also was a co-author and editor with him, taught public school, and was an editor in Virginia.

Donna Aileen Hawkins, 84, of Oklahoma City died Feb. 29, 2012. She was the wife of K. Norwood “Woody” Hawkins, a retired diaconal minister.

Donna was born June 27, 1927, near Kremlin, Okla., to C.R. and Lillie Schultz. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Phillips University, Enid, in 1949, and a master’s in business education in 1956 from Oklahoma A&M College. She began work toward a doctorate at the University of Oklahoma and Central State University.

She taught at high schools in Oklahoma and Kansas. She retired in 1987 from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Donna and Woody married on June 6, 1959. His consecrated lay ministry, especially in music, included positions in Lawton, Oklahoma City, and Chickasha. He retired in 1994.

She was a member of Putnam City United Methodist Church and the New Hope Sunday School Class. She also was active in the Oklahoma County Retired Educators Association, Oklahoma Education Association, Beta Sigma Phi, and Chapter DN of PEO.

Survivors include her husband and also daughter Renee Stallings.Service was March 3 at Putnam City UMC, under the direction of Guardian Funeral

Homes West Chapel, Oklahoma City.

ReBecca caRolyn heaton

Rebecca Carolyn Lowe Heaton, 97, of Yukon, Okla., died Nov. 1, 2011. She was the widow of Rev. Loren G. Heaton, who died in 1999.

She was born Oct. 11, 1914, in Davenport, Okla., to Erah and Carrie (Colvin) Lowe. She was a homemaker and active in United Methodist Women. She enjoyed craft sewing and gardening.

In retirement, Rev. and Mrs. Heaton lived in a cabin home at Lake Eufaula. She moved to Yukon in the late 1990s.

Survivors include sons John Heaton and James Heaton, daughter Jeanne Pratt, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial service was Nov. 5 at Yukon-First UMC, directed by Smith & Turner Mortuary, Yukon.

Esther Clarice Lorene Mabery Kay, 91, of Big Cabin, Okla., died Feb. 27, 2012. She was the widow of Rev. Woodrow “Gene” Kay.

Esther was born Jan. 30, 1921, in Vinita, Okla., to Charles and Osa Mabery. She and Gene married in 1939, and they settled into farming and ranching. During World War II, she worked for a DuPont munitions plant.

Rev. Kay entered ministry in 1944, and she joined him as they served Evangelical United Brethren and United Methodist churches in the state. In 1985 they retired to the Big Cabin area. Rev. Kay died in 2004.

Esther was enthusiastic about horses and art; she inspired and amused many through chalk drawings and cartoon letters.

Survivors include a son, Joe, and two grandchildren. A daughter, Jeanne, also predeceased her.

Memorial service was March 10 at Otterbein UMC, where they ministered during retirement. Directing was Luginbuel Funeral Home, Langley.

Birdie Ruth Rupe Payette, 94, of Walters, Okla., died Jan. 26, 2012. She was the widow of Rev. Clair Ambrose Payette, who died in 1983.

The youngest of 10 children, Birdie was born Jan. 30, 1917, near Walters, to David and Jessie (Eggleston) Rupe.

Clair and Birdie married on Christmas Eve 1933, at the Methodist parsonage in Walters. The couple lived at Walters and then farmed east of Lawton and at Sterling before he entered the ministry in 1952. Upon his retirement in 1978, the couple moved back to Walters.

She was a longtime member of Walters-First UMC; she was president of United Methodist Women and chaired the church’s funeral dinner committee for many years.

She also worked in home health care and, for a time, ran the Senior Citizens Center.Survivors include seven children: Fern Yackeyonney, Bessie Sullivan, and Jessie, David,

Richard, Becky, and Donnie Payette; 20 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was Jan. 28 at Walters Cemetery, directed by Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home.

Virginia Louise Pipkin, 89, of Pocola, Okla., died Jan. 23, 2012. She was the widow of Rev. Morris B. Pipkin, who died in 1999.

Virginia was born Nov. 22, 1922, at Fort Smith, Ark., to Omer and Nell (Moore) Weaver. She and Rev. Pipkin married on Nov. 20, 1940.

A member of Pocola UMC, she was its lay delegate to Annual Conference for many years. She also had been a Lay Leader and member of United Methodist Women.

She was a homemaker. She had served as a Cub Scout den mother and also was a substitute school teacher.

Survivors include sons M. Bruce Pipkin Jr. and Jonathan Pipkin; daughters Betty Ann Walker, Jean Henderson, Nancy Clark, and Karen Schmid; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Service was Jan. 27 at Pocola UMC, officiated by Revs. Thomas Corrigan, Charles Hannah, and James Ogden, with burial at Macedonia Cemetery, Pocola. Directing was Evans & Miller Funeral Home, Pocola.

Frances Sue Crutchfield Post, age 85, of Greeley, Colo., died Nov. 13, 2011. She was the wife of Rev. Dr. William “Billy” Morgan Post Sr., retired.

Frances was born Sept. 24, 1926, in McKenzie, Tenn., to Henry and Gertrude (Tucker) Crutchfield. On Christmas Eve 1942, childhood sweethearts Frances and Billy were married. During World War II, she worked as a payroll clerk in a U.S. defense plant.

In 1950, both graduated from Holmes College of the Bible, with Th.B. degrees. They lived some years in Greeley, beginning in 1956. She later earned a B.A. at Northwest University, Kirkland, Wash., and M.A. at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley.

Rev. Post’s first pastorate was in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, in 1969. Mrs. Post was a homemaker and was always active in church life, teaching Sunday

School and Pioneer Girls, Vacation Bible School, and youth camps. She organized Young Women’s Auxiliary and was a longtime member of a women’s Bible-study group. Mrs. Post had been a member of Greeley Wesleyan Church for 20 years.

She also earned a master’s degree at the University of North Carolina. She was a church secretary, 1981-85.

Rev. Post retired in Oklahoma in 1991, from Ponca City-St. Paul’s, and the couple returned to Greeley. He later pastored Evans UMC, and they traveled extensively, including touring the Holy Land.

Rev. Post has been on staff at Greeley Wesleyan Church, serving as director of Home Care, for 18 years.

Josephine Roberta Estes Bayliff Shepard, age 92, of Tuttle, Okla., died Dec. 29, 2011. She was the widow of Rev. Raymond B. Shepard, who died in 2002.

Roberta was born during a blizzard on Jan. 27, 1919, on a cattle ranch at Eureka, Kan. Her parents were Joseph and Laura (Hester) Estes. The family moved to Oklahoma when she was 2 weeks old. In 1935, she married Clayton Bayliff, and they had six children.

Roberta joined the United Methodist church at Rosston, where she was the youth leader for nine years.

In 1959, she began working at the Rosston post office. She then served as postmaster in Rosston and Buffalo until retiring in 1979, and her work included training new postmasters throughout western Oklahoma. In 1991, she was named to chair a national effort to prevent post office closings.

On Dec. 23, 1973, Roberta married Rev. Shepard in the Buffalo United Methodist Church, where he was pastoring. He had three daughters.

After Rev. Shepard’s retirement in 1989, the couple moved to Mustang. They traveled to the Holy Land at least nine times.

In 1995, Roberta became a member of the Mustang UMC. She was a local and district leader of United Methodist Women.

Survivors include sons Leroy, Robert, Richard, and Raymond Bayliff; daughters Marjorie Kurth, Mary Milburn, Pam Dean, and Debby Duncan; 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. A daughter, Grace Trew, predeceased her.

Service was Jan. 3, 2012, at First Baptist Church, Tuttle, with burial at Fairview Cemetery, Tuttle, directed by McNeil’s Mustang Funeral Service.

RuBy aDell SiMPSon

Ruby Adell Purcell Simpson, 97, of Scottsbluff, Neb., died Oct. 28, 2011. She was the widow of Rev. Charles Edward Simpson.

Adell was born Nov. 3, 1915, at Reydon (formerly Rankin), Okla., to John and Kitty (Baker) Purcell. She attended a business school in Waco, Texas, and later attended Oklahoma Baptist University.

The Simpsons married in 1935. Among Rev. Simpson’s clergy appointments was the church at Clinton, and Mrs. Simpson returned to that city after her husband’s death in 1978.

At Clinton-First UMC, she taught Sunday School, and she was an officer of United Methodist Women at the local, district, and conference levels. She volunteered at the Clinton Methodist Retirement Center.

She also was a member of P.E.O. and bridge and study clubs.In 2008, she moved to Scottsbluff, to live with daughter Janet Gardner. Other survivors

are three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.Services were Oct. 31 at Scottsbluff-First UMC, with Rev. Matt Fowler officiating, and

Nov. 3 at Clinton-First, with Rev. Youngberg officiating. Burial was at White Rose Cemetery, Reydon, 5 miles from the farm where she was born. Arrangements were by Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home, Clinton, and Jolliffe Funeral Home, Scottsbluff.
